Masterpiece of a song. First “ballad” but goddamn does it hit hard in the bridge. Awesome riffs. One of my favorites.
Everybody in the band has an incredible part in this song.
Cliff’s bassline is so harmonious and soothing. James’ lyrics are pretty deep if you examine them, and the acoustic parts are well written. Lars doesn’t really have a prominent part in the song but the drums are well placed and flow smoothly, with some cool fills. And then the solo. Oh the solo. One of my favourites by Kirk, it’s a few minutes of pure heaven.
Definitely in my top 5 favourites.
Amazing that their first ballad turned out to be their best. This might be Metallica’s “most important” song in terms of how they would develop as a band.
Melody meets metal. One of my favorites to this day. I can listen to it at any time and still shake my head in wonderment at how amazing it sounds.

Fade to Black. It made me cope with living without my Deceased Dad who died in '93 (same year i discovered RTL) .I was 15...and my golden Birthday (16) was also my first without my IRL hero. Just say Goodbye....
