Heβs not always right about the the direction VR should focus in on but when heβs wrong heβs honest about it. Good presentation as usual
His talk seemed pretty depressing, but reality isnt always what we want. Software creep, thermal limitations on XR2, compartmentalized teams causing hard to trace issues, the hard limits of fresnel lenses, doubts about eye tracking, and more. We probably gonna be strapping toasters to our faces for a minimum of 5 more years lol
Maybe his issues with the tech dont paint the whole picture though, and at least he sounded happy about the new fixed foveated rendering
Someone also recorded (part of?) his Q&A in Horizon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7mFEGah27c
I could listen to Carmack talk about VR all day long.
It sounded like he still had a big laundry list of things to talk about but he ran out of time. For Jaden Smith.
10:59 β "Shipping Qua (ke).. ahh Quest 2"
My impression after watching his ted talk is that ultimately the team will try and push the mobile processors to its maximum potential over the next couple of years, but unless theirs a material science breakthrough that gets mobile processors to match pc graphics they will have to pivot.
That pivot in my mind is cloud gaming which is essentially what the Oasis was in RPO. I think they eventually get the quest in the RPO form factor with a dedicated console box that houses the power needed to be satisfactory for John and Mark's ultimate vision.
That's my opinion at least. Could be way off, but that's my assessment of the situation.
I wonder which Beat Saber songs Carmack dances to
Had been feeling fairly smug that my ideal IPD on Q1 is 68mm (matching the 3rd option on Q2). Bit gutted to learn it comes with a FOV decrease (FOV already being one of Quest's low points).
