[Music] yes world champion brilliant nico you are world champion thank you so much guys that's a childhood dream come true thank you so much monkey amazing jeff i'm so proud of you you did amazing we did it i've achieved this childhood dream now and i'm not willing to to do that that sort of commitment again for another year and i'm not interested in coming forth or whatever you know i'm i i'm a fighter and i i want to win and so i've decided to follow my heart and my heart has told me to stop there call it a day and go on to to other things and it's been it's been wonderful and it just feels right thank you [Music] the 2017 f1 season saw a new generation of formula one cars created as design offices around the world responded to revised regulations from the fia to make the cars faster and more dramatic whilst maintaining the same v6 turbo hybrid powertrain used since 2014 the changes were geared to an increase in cornering speeds starting with wider tyres both front and rear the rear wing was lowered but increased in width and the rear diffuser expanded changes at the rear were balanced by alterations to the front wing as well the car's overall width increased by 20 centimeters and a wider floor area plus more freedom around the side pods and behind the roll hoop contributed to a major gain in aerodynamic downforce using the power of fast moving air to bind the car to the road the wider tyres would also increase corner and grip while a slight increase in the fuel allowance was made to counterbalance the increase in weight of the bigger car a car that was greatly anticipated as testing commenced [Music] they look absolutely monstrous very very aggressive you know the drivers are loving it they will be proper gladiators out there because the cars will take them to their physical limits [Music] with a clean sheet of paper everybody's come up with a slight variance of a theme it's going to be interesting to see what the potential is well i think they're going to be pretty cool to drive a lot of downforce very fast really high speed corners big flat tires looks like we're gonna have some fun you have more downpours and you are going a bit faster to corners especially high speed is a lot more enjoyable those cars are proper beasts they'll go really fast so it's awesome i'm excited the cars look cool they look pretty mean but i could feel more downforce and and you can lean on it a bit more it's very different to all the formula one cars i've driven in a very good way i mean it's extremely good fun to drive simply can go faster you can push harder through the corners [Music] pre-season testing took place in barcelona in late february and early march offering the teams an opportunity to analyze their latest creations and solve some of the teething problems but at mclaren the third year of association with honda did not begin smoothly in terms of either reliability or power [Music] i'm driving at my best i feel you know enjoying on the corners and driving an attack in the corner quite fast so that's the the first thing i feel the best driver out there so you know we i just need an engine that can run as quick as the others on the streets at williams felipe massa completed plenty of laps but rookie lance troll did suffer the odd mishap yeah i'm so happy with the result today definitely so difficult just to to say where we are but it's always nice when you finish the day your lifetime is on the top and and you did also them the most the most lap around the track as well valdrie potters had made the switch from williams to mercedes and there was still some acclimatization to be done over the course of a total of eight days however most teams were able to dial the new cars in experimenting with different compounds of slick tyres in dry conditions and checking out the new wets once the track had been artificially soaked [Music] throughout the test there was a quiet air of confidence at ferrari as both vettel and raikkonen demonstrated what appeared to be impressive pace raikkonen set the fastest time of the test and he wasn't even using the softest tyre available while vettel backed off on his best laps but was still second fastest performance analysis from testing is always a pretty murky affair but what was crystal clear was the reduction in lap time that the new regulations had achieved as back-to-back comparisons demonstrated yeah i mean i'm i'm pretty pleased how how it went i was it could have been probably better i had a bit difficult previous day but that's um that's what happens that's why we're testing and so far everything is more or less like we like we wanted and but still you know we haven't done single race so it's impossible to say say where we're gonna be but you know we are a good feeling and that's the main thing and we we start in two weeks and in the first race and go from there [Music] melbourne always provides a warm welcome to formula one and as the drivers prepared for round one of the world championship there were smiles all round the revised driving lineup at the champion mercedes team had everyone intrigued and full of anticipation for the action to begin from those keen to make their mark to establish champions everyone was in the mood to get the party started and find out what the new season and new regulations would bring questions surrounded the potential midfield runners force india and renault appeared to be close in performance but so did the american-owned house team going into its second year while williams had experience on the one hand and youthful enthusiasm on the other sadly the after effects of a non-f1 racing accident prevented pascal airline from competing but that opened the door for antonio giovannazi to make his grand prix debut and even the team bosses were enjoying the sense of excitement and anticipation that permeated albert park tell me what two words would you use to describe each of your drivers one is talking the other not the one is talking and one is not talking so introvert extrovert one dress is well the other one dresses less well okay now you have to tell us which one you think dresses well and which one dresses not so well no everybody should form opinion well i'm just gonna mention one driver this weekend that's daniel ricardo yes he's got massive support here and uh i hope it's a big weekend for him the best old driver and the best rookie driver friends beautiful and fast and cyril one is german and one is british the one that's british i would have expected that he speaks a lot that doesn't speak and that the one that is german i would have expected that he doesn't speak and any speaks so there is something maybe it's because we are upside down the new f1 management structure of liberty media saw chase carey as the chairman and chief executive officer while ross braun was named as managing director motorsports and sean bratches as managing director commercial operations the fact there's three of us now carrying out a role that used to be handled by bernie i think is making a statement about where we want to go certainly the role that i'm going to perform uh hasn't been done by fun before so my role on the racing side will be to be proactive to work with the teams to work with the fia to find the right solutions uh to make our sport as great as possible in the future and being able to engage audiences in new ways and particularly with social uh in the time you know in the immediacy in the in that moment of time is really really critical so i think it's a huge opportunity from an engagement standpoint um we issued our first set ever of social media guidelines right before testing and i think from a fan standpoint and from a team and a driver standpoint those who are appreciated acknowledged and we think there's a big opportunity there what would be your wish list top three wishes for the new owners of f1 a race in vegas [Music] what else raised in germany i've said mine louis your thoughts miami race yeah i agree with with everything it's good equal engines for everyone i don't agree with that one and do you think that the new regulation can stop mercedes domination and louise do you consider yourself as a favorite of a championship obviously mercedes has been in a very very strong form the last three years and or even though we changed the rules or the regulations i think if a team is strong then they will build a strong car the after no matter what you do with the rules so i think it's very clear who is the favorite is it that way i see ferrari being the quickest at the moment and i think they would definitely be the favorites um but of course we'll find out go more into the weekend and it's interesting to see sebastian is more usually more a lot more hype and i can tell he's kind of trying to keep the lid on it but you know that pace was obviously great in in testing i'm very very uh keen to see what red will bring you know having more teams and having more drivers up at the front fighting for wins is that's what racing is all about as the only australian on the grid daniel ricardo was eager to deliver in qualifying but he tried a tad too hard some crest fallen spectators had to accept that he wasn't going to be in the battle up front at least in the early stages of the race but he didn't appear too dismayed so the grid saw hamilton on pole from vettel with their teammates bottas and raikkonen on the second row max verstappen lined up in fifth place with roman grosjean sixth and they were followed by felipe massa starting in seventh and carlos science eighth the top ten was completed by danny caveat and sergio perez race day drama did not take long to unfold as daniel ricardo discovered on his reconnaissance lap i got a understood can you describe the issue please engine's still running but i'm stuck in gear just let me know if you want me to stay in the car okay daniel can you get out please christian horner's consternation was clear to see the recovery crew was quickly on the scene and there was still of vettel alongside while his team principal maurizio arrivabene watched the monitors in the garage the 2017 season blasted off with hamilton making a peach of a start while vettel's was less effective and that put him under pressure from bottas the ferrari held second place into turn one while further back one or two drivers touched the grass but everyone survived the first turn hamilton led vettel was second ahead of bottas while raikkonen was fourth ahead of verstappen the midfield was looking cramped but further back the first race incident of the year was to involve magnuson and ericsson the hass and the sauber made contact both went into the gravel at turn three but kept their engines running and were able to limp back out no blame was apportioned but both of their races would be compromised by damage [Music] at the red bull garage a faulty sensor had been replaced and ricardo was dispatched to chase the field [Applause] much to the delight of the partisan crowd smoke from the back of a car is never a good sign and sure enough it signaled the end of the race for the other house car of roman grosjon on lap 13 a bitterly disappointing end after qualifying superbly in sixth at the front of the race hamilton found he was struggling for grip and vettel had closed the gap as the pit window opened up on lap 18 hamilton was called in for what would prove to be his one and only stop of the race the mercedes crew prepared to change the 2017 spec wider tyres for the first time in the heat of competition and he switched from ultra soft to soft tires vettel pitted five laps later having put in some rapid lap times on the ultra softs [Music] the stop went cleanly but even better for ferrari was the fact that hamilton had got stuck behind max verstappen and as vettel emerged from the pits and accelerated down towards turn one he was able to squeeze ahead of the dueling pair and mercedes knew that crucial track position had been lost [Music] [Applause] toto wolff was not a happy man [Applause] verstappen continued to harass vettel as the ferrari picked up speed on the new soft tyres but once into the groove vettel was away [Music] hamilton was still losing time behind verstappen and mercedes were attempting to come up with a solution we're thinking thinking being our thinking plan b [Applause] [Music] daniel ricardo's weekend had been pretty tough already and it was about to end in similar fashion on lap 28 a lack of outright pace had been overshadowed by a lack of reliability for the australian culminating in a weekend to forget okay daniel p0 sorry mate [Music] meanwhile double world champion fernando alonso was having his work cut out to stay in the point esteban ocon was determined to prove that his promotion to force india was well deserved while niko hulkenberg in the renault was also engaged in the multi-coloured battle for 10th [Music] it all came to a head on the run into turn one where okon slipstreamed past alonso and hulkenberg attempted to take both ultimately he had to settle for tucking in behind ocon and ahead of the mclaren [Music] alonso fought valiantly but was unable to fend them off and as he continued to drop away it became clear that he had some sort of suspension problem there is something wrong with the cat he's pulling to the left something on the suspension [Applause] mclaren's racing director eric boulier had anticipated a difficult start to the season but the fact that alonso had run in the top 10 was encouraging [Music] by now sebastian vettel was heading to a relatively easy victory to the delight of thousands of red-capped fans vetted round at the final corner to take the first victory of the season his second ever win in australia and ferrari's first here in 10 years mercedes was soundly beaten into second for hamilton and third for bottas the testing performance had not been misleading ferrari proved they had a fast car and delivered on day one [Applause] vettel took ferrari's first win at a season opening race since 2010 while hamilton had to settle for second and bottas earned a podium first time out for mercedes kimi raikkonen was fourth ahead of verstappen while philippe massa earned good points for williams in sixth ahead of perez and science danny caviat ensured both toro rossos were in the points and esteban ocon scored for the first time in his relatively short career sebastian vettel was happy to autograph a very special piece of artwork that had been created while the race had been developing on track and to the delight of many fans ferrari had taken on both the new rules and the mighty mercedes to deliver the first blow of the 2017 season [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] conditions on the first day of practice for the chinese grand prix proved far from ideal as low cloud in the shanghai area meant the medical helicopter could not gain access to the designated hospital in the city initial delays then led to the sessions being stopped altogether but that didn't prevent fans from making the most of their opportunities even if their spelling left a little to be desired sebastian helpfully reminded them that they were looking for an l but they were having a great time whatever conditions improved on saturday for qualifying but salva standing antonio giovannazi lost control he hit the wall hard within sight of the pit lane but team principal manisha caltenborn was inscrutable in her response the ferrari reserve driver was unhurt but would start down in 18th place lewis hamilton took pole position for the race with vettel alongside and in a repeat of the melbourne grid bottas was third and reikan and fourth ricardo lined up fifth for red bull ahead of the williams of mata and then a fine seventh was nico hulkenberg's renault while perez qualified eighth the top ten was completed by danny caveat and for the first time canadian rookie lance stroll before the main event there was an opportunity for some drivers to hone their hand-eye coordination skills with a game of table tennis with seasoned professional wang lee chin felipe mata was in particularly fine form but perhaps alonso thought he was playing with a golf ball rather than a ping pong ball while daniel ricardo just soaked up the atmosphere and added his own particular slant round two of the championship would start on a damp track with all cars on intermediate tires apart from carlos sainz who chose slicks starting from 11th hamilton made a good getaway on the slippery surface while vettel had to defend his second position firmly from valtteri bottas not far behind ricardo swept around kimi raikkonen at the first couple of corners to claim fourth position lance stroll had made a clean start away from the grid but contact with sergio perez at turn 10 on the first lap spun the williams into the gravel and out of the race was keen to switch onto slick tyres at the earliest opportunity and ferrari responded accordingly perez was among a group of drivers who stopped on the same lap hoping to gain an edge as the track dried but a damp area on track caught out antonio giovanazzi and for the second time of the weekend he crashed within view of his crew las connells is now my friend and of course this weekend is normal one of my best weekend uh yeah first thing i want to say sorry again to the guys to the team because they did a fantastic job all night to rebuild the car so it was a shame to crash again today the safety car was deployed as giovannatsi's crash damage was dealt with and all drivers had to go through the pits both hamilton and ricardo used the safety car period to change tyres which undid any advantage that the early stoppers had hoped to gain ricardo would rejoin in second place valtteri bottas was keen to get his slicks up to temperature before the restart but he over did the weaving and lost control veering onto wet grass and spinning again as he sought to make up for his error positions were lost as he scrambled for grip and he would restart in 12th [Music] once the field was released to go racing hamilton accelerated away from ricardo raikkonen verstappen who had moved up from 16th on the grid and sebastian vettel who now found himself down in fifth place through the timing of the safety car christian horner saw some potential for a strong result and max verstappen was again gaining places in the challenging conditions sweeping around kimi raikkonen for third place [Music] before long verstappen had caught teammate ricardo and without waiting he'd dive down the inside at turn five to take second [Music] by lap 20 vettel had caught his teammate and pulled off a similar maneuver hamilton was comfortably leading the field but all the action was going on for the other podium places and vettel caught daniel ricardo on lap 22. the australian wasn't going to leave the door open so the four times world champion went round the outside instead and with a little bit of rubbing on the exit of the corner he was through into third his next target was verstappen who was beginning to struggle for grip and when the 19 year old locked up going into the hairpin vettel took full advantage to move into second place having been running in seventh alonso's chances of scoring points ended on lap 33. drive problem russia every opportunity that will be there we will take it and today we we prove once more how hungry we are about about getting the result and unfortunately we are not strong enough to finish the race still i think the lack of winter testing is a big price that we are paying now but yeah we will try to improve as soon as possible there were no such problems for lewis hamilton he exited the final corner to win his first grand prix of the season his fifth success in shanghai get in there lewis that's absolutely great race mate absolute master class well i'll manage from you guys too man thank you so much for all your efforts guys everyone i've really worked hard for this hamilton beat vettel by 6.2 seconds while max verstappen took red bull's first podium of the season having made 13 places in the race teammate ricardo was fourth ahead of raikkonen and bottas while science's gamble on slicks at the beginning was rewarded by finishing seventh magnuson scored his first points at hass while force india continued their point-scoring performance from melbourne hamilton's win meant he now joined vettel at the top of the standings each having scored a win and a second place congratulations to lewis and congratulations to the mercedes amg patronus represented by their engineering director there was no doubt in my mind that i could challenge the ferrari but of course i saw him picking up the pace and i was like i'm on this is this game on this is a this is a real battle and then you know i noticed that i was matching or matching or exchanging times and that's what racing's about you know if it was too easy to pull out a gap then it would kind of suck it was it was really great that you know he was sometimes put in you know particularly the last 10 laps he was doing a 35 six and i was doing 38 35 8 and every now and then i got to seven and you know it was it was awesome from the outskirts of shanghai to the island nation of bahrain round three took place on the edge of the desert where plenty of entertainment was laid on for the fans [Music] [Applause] as dusk fell during qualifying at the sakia circuit a lively battle was developing for pole position valtteri bottas had embarrassed himself with a spin in china but fought back with a superb lap in bahrain leaving lewis hamilton a tough target to beat the british driver was looking for a hat-trick of pole positions both in bahrain and for the season but he missed out by two hundredths of a second [Music] over at ferrari sebastian vettel was also attempting to snatch the top spot but as the clock tripped over the benchmark set by bottas a few minutes earlier it was time to celebrate at mercedes as valtteri became the fifth finn in f1 history to earn a pole position in only his third race at the team he'd beaten hamilton in a straight fight so bottas and hamilton took the first all-mercedes front row of the year from vettel and daniel ricardo on the second row kimi raikkonen was fifth and max verstappen sixth while nico hulkenberg secured seventh place ahead of the williams of felipe massa roman grosjean qualified ninth and jolie and palmer made the top 10 for the first time in his career 20 cars lined up to race but that number was about to drop to 19 as stoffel van darn's car was removed from the grid before the race start with a failed mguh and mclaren's tough start to the season continued bottas lined up ready to take the start from his first pole position with hamilton to one side and vettel behind and there was no evidence of any nerves as he executed a superb launch to be comfortably ahead into the first corner vettel also made a good start and carried his speed around the outside of turn one and around lewis hamilton to grab second [Music] place behind hamilton the two red bulls were scrapping over fourth place and max verstappen managed to seal the deal into turn four mercedes now ran first and third split by vettel's ferrari while further back jolie and palmer in the renault was battling with esteban ocon's force india as both attempted to claim 10th place and right behind the two toro rosso stable mates were also contesting similar territory but it was danny caviat who suffered the lock up ran wide in avoidance of science and consequently lost several places to the consternation of his crew on lap 11 max verstappen was on his way after a routine pit stop but as he approached turn forward over 190 miles an hour he suffered instantaneous rear brake failure it sent him across the extensive runoff area and into the barrier yeah very disappointing um we would have been second if we could just run so we bought we would have undercut the mercedes cars so that's always very positive and the pace was there you know the car was holding on really well um but that's also the side of motorsport i guess carlos science pitted on lap 13 for a change of tires but as he exited the pits lance stroll in the williams flash by on the outside and went to turn in the collision would put both cars out [Music] it was stroll's third non-finish in three grand prix through no fault of his own yeah so i'm coming out of pit lane 60 meters behind me and then next thing i know boom entirely on him do you think yeah for sure i mean i need to turn eventually and make the corner so he was like 60 meters behind and just hit me right in the side so i don't know what else to say i mean just hopefully the luck will turn around but i believe he just didn't see me i mean if he declares he didn't he did see me then i don't understand why he leaves no no space for me there in the inside obviously this is formula one there was a gap there i went for it and didn't look up any wheel it's not like i missed the corner completely i was there parking the car in the inside [Music] the resulting safety car period encouraged more pit stops and lewis hamilton was aware that he would have to double stack with bottas at the mercedes pit box while also trying to fend off ricardo blocking daniel before they came into the pits was fine but slowing him down within the pit lane was against the rules he timed his arrival at mercedes perfectly but trouble was brewing look like hamilton slowed down in the pit lane in front of you do you confirm that yeah come from okay we can see what he's trying to do ricardo still emerged ahead of hamilton but more significantly for mercedes an earlier pit stop by vettel had now put him ahead of bottas and the ferrari was in control for the restart while hamilton used mercedes power to overcome the renault in the back of daniel ricardo's car bottas made a concerted effort to rest the lead back from vettel but the ferrari stayed ahead into turn one the finn hadn't given up and with a great exit from turn three he was on the outside approaching turn four vettel just held position giving bottas a firm squeeze on the exit and the german stayed ahead further back ricardo lost fourth place to massa and was about to lose fifth to raikkonen the new set of soft tyres taken on at the pit stop were not switching on for red bull and he was struggling for grip [Music] okay this is a box box box box we'll be serving this penalty just remember keep break pressure on on lap 20 hamilton pitted to serve the five-second penalty he had received for blocking ricardo earlier once the five seconds had been counted another set of soft tyres was fitted to take him to the end of the race despite that healthy pole position in qualifying bottas was struggling on the tyres in the race and as hamilton closed up having served his penalty mercedes made it clear that they expected valtteri to move out of his way an instruction which potass obeyed at an area hamilton wasn't quite expecting [Music] hamilton was now second but too far back from the leader to have any real chance of victory so sebastian vettel had an untroubled final stint to the race as he sailed towards a second victory having started on the second row in the end it was a relatively straightforward win sebastian's third in bahrain but his first here since 2013. [Applause] yes guys yes yes yes yes yes that's what i'm talking about [Music] with two wins out of three races ferrari were having a fantastic start to the season you will see the trophy it's really nice i think it's one of them i kicked it thank you yes i realized already in the first thing i can stay there i can stay there but overtake was difficult vettel won by over six seconds from hamilton while bottas was a distant third reichellen was fourth ahead of ricardo felipe massa was a solid sixth beating the force india of perez while grosjean hulkenberg and ocon completed the points positions and victory in bahrain had helped vettel to a seven point championship lead but verstappen's break failure dropped him from third to fifth in one fell swoop grosjean moved into the points for the first time while ferrari reclaimed the constructor's lead and forced india moved one point ahead of williams victory in bahrain had helped vettel to a seven point championship lead it was a proud day for ferrari [Applause] between the black sea and the caucasus mountains the sochi olympic park hosted the russian grand prix and gave russian driver danny caveat an opportunity to become acquainted with an entirely different sport this part of russia has been a popular holiday destination for a long time but out on track there was no time to relax in the all-important contest for paul kimi raikkonen was on form for ferrari having set the pace in first practice and he established the target time as the session drew to a close sebastian vettel had been fastest in the second and third practice sessions and he linked together the final series of corners beautifully to go faster than his teammate by the tiny margin of six hundredths of a second [Music] ferrari were looking for their first pole position of the season but it wasn't confirmed yet valtteri bottas had been fastest in q1 and q2 but he missed out by just under 1 10th of a second while lewis hamilton never appeared to be quite as one with the car in sochi and ended up fourth so ferrari took their first poll since singapore 2015 and their first one-two on the grid since 2008. you've got it you've got it that was a sebastian vettel up yes yes yes yes yes yes it was sebastian vettel's first ever pole position in russia and kimi raikkonen's first front row start here bottas outqualified hamilton for the second time in a row while daniel ricardo was fifth ahead of felipe masses williams in sixth place max verstappen lined up seventh nico hulkenberg was providing great consistency in eighth for renault while the two force india teammates were hoping to continue their 100 point scoring record yet to pass a checkered flag in 2017 fernando alonso didn't even get to see the start lights in sochi as the mclaren honda failed on the formation lap causing further disappointment to the stricken team members the rest of the grid lined up in glorious sunshine and prepared for one of the longest drags to the first breaking point of any circuit on the calendar vettel was away well but bottas followed on the clean side of the track tucked in behind the ferrari to maximize the slipstream then darted out and used the overspeed to be ahead into turn two vettel held second from raikkonen with hamilton fourth but further down the order there was contact between palmer and grosjean the safety car was deployed but in all the drama lance stroll spun at turn five thankfully without contact both grojo and palmer had race ending damage to their cars but both drivers were unhurt in what was deemed to be a racing incident i couldn't do anything more i had to turn the corner he was right on the curb on the inside i think he was he was very ambitious considering that corner always tightens and everyone gets sandwiched and i got sandwiched and then he hit me so i think to be honest he was too ambitious as the safety car peeled back into the pit lane valtteri bottas made an aggressive restart to pull away from vettel and raikkonen the finn had been on great form all weekend much to the delight of his supporters sadly ricardo's race was heading for an early termination see my right rear brakes on file in fourth place hamilton was struggling to keep the car cool enough okay lewis we are hot on temps why is my car overheating guys i love the race now [Music] despite qualifying and starting the race on ultra soft tyres race leader bottas stayed out till lap 27 before making a pit stop to switch to supersofts the smooth surface in sochi meant there was very little tire degradation not that fernando alonso was too bothered for the moment vettel was in the lead and showed no signs of pity [Music] we are staying out pace is very good stay there ferrari did prepare for a pit stop for his teammate however who came in on lap 29 [Music] raikkonen was still in the hunt for a podium finish but the race win was developing into a duel between bottas and vettel although in the heat of the battle perhaps kimi raikkonen hadn't quite worked out who was where on track particularly with regard to the two mercedes cars and we are 9.5 behind bottas and eight times a lap quicker confirm we are behind us how did we end up behind him [Music] vettel eventually stopped from the lead on lap 34 and removed the ultrasoft tyres that had done a remarkable stint leg mercedes knew they would have a race on their hands as vettel's tires were seven laps fresher than those of bottas going into the final stages sure enough vettel closed the gap and going into the final lap bottas was within sight of his first win but had traffic to cope with as well he passed the ninth-placed williams of felipe massa using drs into turn two and vettel knew he had to zap past quickly as well but a misunderstanding through turns 3 and 4 opened up the gap much to vettel's [Music] disgust [Music] under the watchful eye of russian president vladimir putin valtteri bottas completed the final lap of the russian grand prix to take his first ever victory at the top level and beat sebastian vettel by just six tenths of a second he became the fifth finished driver in formula one history to win the grand prix and mercedes had seen their replacement for nico rosberg deliver on his promise [Applause] race engineer tony ross was delirious yes brilliant well done took quite a while huh more than 80 races did take a bit of a while but well done immense pressure the 27 year old from nastola who'd been a keen ice hockey player before switching his attention to four wheels had achieved his first win in his 81st grand prix at only his fourth race with his new friends at mercedes [Applause] the winning margin was just six tenths of a second over vettel while kimi raikkonen doubled up the ferrari podium lewis hamilton had to settle for fourth ahead of max verstappen and the two force india's hulkenberg finished in the points for a second consecutive race while massa and science completed the point scorers vettel increased his lead from 7 to 13 points while bottas close to within 10 of hamilton perez moved ahead of massa and ocon entered the top 10. in the constructors mercedes inched ahead of ferrari by a single point but there was no change to the rest of the order the trophy was handed over by the russian president himself as bottas became the 107th ever winner of a formula one grand prix it took more than 80 races for me to have my first race win and the amount of work that i've put into this it's nice to get this first one and uh it's even though i've never doubted my skills or anything but it's nice to have that confirmation that i can do this you know there's there's no worries i can just push on and just hope to get more more wins now hamilton briefly joined the celebrations as valtteri soaked up the success [Music] beautiful barcelona hosted the spanish grand prix the first of the non-fly-away races and the first opportunity to experience the updated fan zone where spectators could fully engage with the thrills and spills of formula one [Music] [Music] wow [Music] oh amazing [Music] the circuit to catalonia saw a closely fought qualifying session that lewis hamilton conquered by just half a tenth of a second from sebastian vettel valerie bottas and kimi raikkonen backed up their teammates on road two while the winner here in 2016 max verstappen qualified fifth ahead of ricardo in sixth an outstanding effort by fernando alonso put the mclaren seventh while perez was eighth in the force india split from his teammate by the williams of felipe massa [Music] hamilton's third pole position in four grand prix made him favourite to lead into turn one but vettel had other ideas and a superb start in the ferrari put the german ahead and hamilton under pressure from bottas and raikkonen lewis did snatch second but as raikkonen attempted to take third there was contact at both sides of his car and both he and max verstappen ended up with damaged suspension vettel led the two mercedes ricardo was fourth but felipe massa was showering sparks as it became clear he'd been involved in a separate incident in turn two this is suspension okay if you have suspension damage then can you bring it home max yeah max made his feelings obvious but on review he had a clearer understanding of what had occurred well i think you could clearly see what happened uh it was just uh you know valtteri hitting kimi and of course it was difficult for kimi to control the car so he slammed into me um but yeah normally three cars i think is doable it's always very tight in that corner but if we didn't touch for sure everybody would have given each other space in the next corner but unfortunately we didn't arrive to turn to raikkonen was forced to abandon his car on the very first lap causing his first non-finish of the season and a great deal of distress to one of his younger fans in the grandstand [Music] the other ferrari was in much better shape with vettel opening a gap to hamilton in the first stint on the soft pirelli tyres they're used in qualifying kevin magnussen and carlos science were among the early stoppers on lap 14 and they were released at virtually the same time science had followed in the first stint and was keen to find a way past but taking to the grass was perhaps not the best way thankfully they both survived to continue the race on track he just went on the quest to dry he's crazy he's just waiting on the cross he could have taken both out yeah yeah and this to come down calm down please come down we are reporting to this tour do we saw everything is pretty clear vettel came in on lap 15 and switched to a second set of soft tyres but his advantage to lewis before pitting had been under three seconds and this was hamilton's chance to really go for it this is the opportunity lewis give it everything you got get a little bit more if you need but clearly he was working hard and there was no certainty at mercedes that they could get this one back hamilton pitted on lap 21 and went for the alternative strategy on tyres by putting the mediums on at this stage and saving his other soft tyres for later but now ferrari had another problem vettel had caught race leader bottas who'd not yet stopped and it was costing him time he had to make the move and sure enough he did with a very committed piece of overtaking on the approach to turn one everyone in the ferrari camp knew just how crucial that could be [Applause] towards the tail of the field stoffel van dorn was running ahead of the recovering felipe massa but apparently didn't spot the brazilian going to the inside contact was made and the belgians race was over [Music] in order to recover his car from the gravel the virtual safety car was deployed and this provided an opportunity for mercedes hamilton had been nearly eight seconds behind vettel but ferrari had left their car out on circuit and mercedes still had the faster tire to use so they went for it relatively early meanwhile kimi raikkonen's disappointed fan was about to receive a major boost [Music] race leader vettel made his pit stop once the track was up to full speed once again on lap 38 his final stint would be on the medium tire but it was going to be close on pit exit with hamilton who had gained hugely in the last couple of laps the mercedes was at full speed down the main straight as vettel was about to appear from the pits on the right breaking as late as he did hamilton was a long side into turn one but vettel eased him wide and narrowly clung onto the lead [Music] [Applause] bottas in third was about to go out with a whimper [Music] that strange squeal was the last cry of this well-used power unit which had been called back into service following problems in practice with a new engine that's just the engine failure don't know anything more than that so ng blew up was it a risk putting in the engine that obviously had done four races already uh well yes now we can see it was it was a risk definitely you know we thought it would last for this race but like i said i don't know the details of heather what was it why why it happened while one side of the garage was being packed up there was still a race to fight for on the other and hamilton was perfectly poised on lap 44. using the drag reduction system on the main straight he swept past the ferrari on the outside to claim the lead of the spanish grand prix much to the delight of daimler chairman dieter's edge [Applause] vettel had no answer no chance like a train like a train the closing stages saw the toro rosso of danny caviat in 10th position but determined to overtake kevin magnussen for ninth he thought he had the move done while magnuson had other ideas [Applause] but the contact was more harmful to the dane than to the russian we have a mode puncture mode puncture [Music] for lewis hamilton this has been a hard fought but superbly executed victory his second of the season to match vettel's number of wins and the perfect comeback after the disappointment of russia vettel finished three and a half seconds behind get in there lewis what a race mate what a race that was an awesome drive awesome drive pal guys what can i say fantastic job this weekend hamilton added fastest lap to his pole position and victory while daniel ricardo recorded his first podium of the season and force india celebrated a superb fourth and fifth place finish the first sauber points of the year were taken by their line even though a five-second penalty for an incorrect entry to the pits dropped him from seventh to eighth vettel's lead in the championship was reduced to six while neither bottas nor raikkonen scored any in the constructors championship a double score by toro rosso promoted the team above williams in the ranking career win number 55 was special this race there's no fuel saving there's no it's on the limit every single lap to stay you know he was rapid um the pace that he was he was demanding from me to be able to be in there was was uh oh yeah crazy i think the last part of my energy went when i celebrate with my team i i was so happy and i jumped on the team and i i nearly passed out afterwards [Music] victory in the spanish grand prix may have been decided on track but it took a touch of fortune and some inspired calls on the pit wall to put lewis hamilton in a position to win when sebastian vettel took the lead at the start ferrari looked in control but fearing the undercut they opted to pit the german early mercedes reacted by stretching hamilton's first stint and bot asses which would bring him into play when lewis eventually stopped he emerged over seven seconds down on vettel but then sebastian came up behind bottas who held him up costing four seconds that would prove crucial later in the race [Music] by the time vettel finally got past the gap to hamilton had been slashed to just over three seconds vettel then pulled the gap out to over seven seconds once more but then fate intervened all right [Applause] [Music] copy so switch the car fully off stop twitch the car fully off thinking on their feet mercedes opted to stop hamilton earlier than planned but cleverly they waited until the very end of the virtual safety car period and so when vettel pitted the next lap under normal racing conditions the stop cost more time and by this point his earlier advantage had been wiped out we lost time fighting with valtteri we lost time with the second pit stop um i think without those two things you can have 10 seconds gap and then it looks completely different but didn't happen and though hamilton wasn't able to get past straight away he soon made the crucial overtake before going on to win with performance so evenly matched between mercedes and ferrari strategy proved the decisive factor [Music] [Music] [Applause] wow [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] amidst all the glamour of monaco the big f1 news was that jensen button was back standing in for fernando alonso who was racing at the indy 500. i'm very relaxed um very excited actually you know it's it's it's interesting coming back for one grand prix uh but um it being monaco it's very special you know i've won here before i've lived here for 17 years uh and uh had some really good experiences here so it's it's exciting button's teammate stoffel van darn was having his best ever qualifying until this happened the belgian was unhurt but the subsequent yellow flags prevented others from improving most notably lewis hamilton who therefore failed to break into q3 and would end up qualifying 14th the final shootout in the top 10 saw kimi raikkonen right on the pace fighting millimeter by millimeter with teammate vettel for the top spot it's pole giving it's pole ah good thank you guys it was raikkonen's first poll since the french grand prix in 2008 128 races before and at one of the most important venues to have the starting advantage vettel made his new ferrari front row with bottas in third and verstappen fourth ricardo qualified fifth ahead of carlos sainz who set a tremendous lap in the toro rosso then perez was seventh and grosjean eighth danny caveat qualified ninth ahead of hulkenberg's renault perfect conditions on race day added to the atmosphere as lewis hamilton congratulated kimmy on his poll button's return saw him qualify ninth but start from the pit lane with engine penalties so a pet talk was welcome again so my friend i'm sure you wanted to hear my voice before starting the race uh just wishing you the best of luck we follow you here on television you did amazing yesterday so yeah please thank you take care of my car okay i'm going to pee in your seat please have fun you did amazing amazing job kimi raikkonen's previous pole position in monaco back in 2005 had led to victory but the start would be crucial it was a clean launch for both ferraris while bottas followed them into sandoval and verstappen managed to hold track position over teammate ricardo a clean first corner allowed the field to start settling into the rhythm of this unique event but there was a long way to go nico hulkenberg was out of luck as early as lap 16 as smoke poured from the back of the renault [Music] okay nico we have a major gearbox problem max verstappen came in from fourth place on lap 33 and switched from ultra soft to supersoft tyres he was soon followed by third place runner valtteri bottas enjoying top billing for mercedes as hamilton attempted to drive through the field christian horner was intrigued to see what ferrari would do with their leading pair raikkonen was brought in first as is usually the case for the driver that's ahead but here in monaco the ultrasoft tyres were holding up remarkably well and sebastian vettel was making the most of them as well as having a clear track ahead to put in a series of fastest laps just before his own pit stop [Music] this was a key period of the race and not only vettel but also daniel ricardo took full advantage of the life left in those ultrasofts to make up ground on those around them [Music] under the watchful eye of film and tv star liam cunningham ricardo rejoined the circuit having leapfrogged both max verstappen and valderrie bottas into third place [Music] did dario stop uh yes max daniel unfortunately has jumped us both what a disaster [Music] could vettel do the same to raikkonen he stopped on lap 39 and the ferrari crew went to work it was going to be nip and tucked with his teammates at pitt exit so it's going to be close with sev close we set up vettel had done enough to secure the lead and ferrari's strategy had worked well for the championship leader any mistakes this was going to be another maximum points haul for vettel further down the order sauber's pascal airline had spent much of the race just ahead of jensen button as they allowed the leader to lap them jensen saw an opportunity to nip by but the door was closed and their line was bounced into the barrier [Music] can you hear me yeah okay are you okay yeah it would be better if i could jump out okay be patient uh i will help you soon until now i'm feeling okay i will do a recheck next week again and uh yeah just just i just cannot understand why someone like jensen with so much experience would do such a crazy move [Applause] button also failed to finish and was penalized for the incident a sad way to end his one-off race the subsequent safety car saw a massive drop in tyre temperatures for everyone and as marcus ericsson was waved past the safety car he slid into the barriers which meant both saubers were now out of the grand prix the lack of grip was clearly going to be a challenge at the restart and kimi raikkonen was staying in sebastian vettel's wheel tracks while bottas was pressurizing ricardo for third place and it almost had the desired effect ricardo skimmed the barrier but survived while vettel continued to lead up front further back another driver was caught out by the lack of grip this time stoffel vandoorne in the mclaren just inside the top ten danny caviat was busy fending off the advances of sergio perez who'd made a late pit stop for fresh tyres and was on a mission sadly the contact would end caviat's race and drop perez out of the points fingernails were suffering in the ferrari pit but there was no need to worry sebastian vettel rounded the last two corners to earn his third win of the season his first in monaco since 2011 and the first ferrari win in the principality since 2001. [Applause] it was also the first ferrari 1-2 in nearly 7 years while ricardo enjoyed a second stroke podium beating bottas into fourth having started 14th lewis hamilton collected six points for seventh while haas achieved their first ever double point score vettel eased away from hamilton in the points while science gained a place after his excellent sixth place finish but for the first time in 2017 neither force india driver scored points ferrari's 43 point maximum score allowed them to move ahead of mercedes in the constructors [Music] kimi raikkonen took a popular pole position in monaco his first for nine years it's paul kimmy it's paul good thank you guys the teammate sebastian vettel passed him in the pit stops to take ferrari's first monte carlo victory since 2001 and there was much discussion after the race about whether the team had contrived to hand vettel victory by giving him a better strategy he should have finished where he started really but uh obviously team team worked hard to make make it possible for him but you know that's motor racing i guess is that something you would agree with i don't know i have no idea for me i i was the one who did more does that strategy make sense to you i don't know i just finished the rest traditionally in formula one the driver qualifying ahead of his teammate is offered the first pit stop which in theory puts him onto fresher tyres earlier and gives him an advantage i understand and obviously learned that you know kimi was not happy which i think would be the same the other way around the plan before the race was you know that the lead car gets the pit stop first which puts you on the fresh attire sooner this is what ferrari did here ryken and pitted as planned on lap 34 while vettel crucially stayed out for another five laps in theory raikkonen's was the fastest strategy but vettel's astonishing speed on his old and worn ultrasoft tyres is what won him the race and he knew it the two laps with the old tires i was giving everything i had gracie i also knew that if i have a chance to win today that would be the one so i went as fast as i could and i was surprised myself when i came out in front but of course you know i take it and it wasn't just raikkonen who lost out by an overcut both mercedes valtteri bottas and red bull's max verstappen suffered the same fate as daniel ricardo opted for a longer first stint like vettel and passed them both so raikkonen's weight for a first win since 2013 continues you were phenomenal in qualifying you're phenomenal in the race does it hurt that you you weren't standing on the top step of the podium when you done the most of the hard work and then we finish second it's not bad but there's obviously no one we wanted to eel notre dame in the lawrence seaway is the famous landmark for the canadian grand prix and in 2017 proceedings began with the reintroduction of a raft race on the rowing lake it's a great event it's great to see all the teams out having a bit of fun it's the lighter side of the formula one mclaren finally took a win helped by their olympic medal winning oarsmen and engineer tom stallard qualifying saw hamilton at the peak of his form on a track that he loves he took his sixth pole position at the circuit jill vilnerv and the 65th of his career matching the tally of his great hero ayette and senna thank you the cena family wanted to give you something to congratulate you on equaling erton's record from your hero to you so hamilton lined up on pole ahead of vettel with their exploits mirrored by their teammates once again on the second row max verstappen outqualified daniel ricardo on row three while felipe massa was seventh for williams ahead of perez for force india ocon qualified in ninth place and nico hulkenberg was 10th [Music] hamilton's first ever win was in canada in 2007 and now he was looking for number six on the circuit shield villeneuve his launch went well but it was verstappen who made the best start from fifth to be challenging for second into turn one he swept around vettel clipping his front wing while bottas squeezed into third reichenan and ricardo were racing for fifth but on the approach to turn three it was about to go haywire for carlos [Music] science running backwards along the grass the spaniard took felipe massa out with him following initial contact with roman grosjean nice it's terrible i mean you always just finished you know like that and uh in the in the circuit that we were competitive during the weekend i i expect to have a competitive car in the race as well unfortunately i couldn't do five corners took avoiding action and science was penalized later by the stewards once the damage had been cleared away the restart took place on the run towards the final chicane but as the speed soared so did the damaged piece of wing on vettel's car must happen put hamilton under pressure but in doing so he lost momentum on the exit and had to work hard to keep bottas behind on the approach to turn one further round the lap raikkonen made an error ran wide onto the grass and dropped a place to sergio perez [Music] by now vettel was feeling the lack of front grip due to the damaged wing and made an early pit stop to obtain a replacement [Music] new tyres went on but hope had not been lost for a decent result verstappen was in a clear second place unable to stay with hamilton but ahead of the rest until he suffered a shutdown [Music] after such a brilliant start it was cruel to see his opportunity go to waste [Music] vettel was losing no time in regaining lost ground but the championship leader was in danger of seeing his points advantage closed considerably by hamilton who was well on his way to an uncontested victory fernando alonso was running just outside the top ten but there was nothing he could do to prevent lance stroll in the williams coming past and the canadian was having one of his best races of the season [Applause] vettel's early pit stop had forced ferrari into making his a two-stop race and he pitted from sixth on lap 49 dropping him one place further back but with fresh tyres on board [Music] raikkonen was now the man in sixth place but suffering some brake problems and when he ran wide into the final chicane and lost momentum in rejoining it gave vettel the perfect opportunity to pass and go in chase of the two forced indias perez was fourth and ock on fifth but they were fighting so hard it allowed vettel to close the gap and with a brave and opportunistic piece of overtaking vettel dived inside okon into turn one and moved into fifth [Music] [Applause] sadly on lap 66 out of 70 fernando alonso's hold on 10th place ended engine he pulled over at the earliest opportunity much to the disappointment of zach brown and the rest of the mclaren management but he kept his fans happy by climbing into the grandstand and offering his gloves as a prize with the bits between his teeth vettel past perez with a couple of laps to go to move into fourth and complete a solid recovery but mercedes were the winners this time as lewis hamilton dominated the event to earn his third win of 2017 his sixth ever in canada and capture [Applause] esteban ocon had not given up on fifth but perez wasn't about to hand him the place and the season's campaigner fended off the youngster he cannot do that he cannot do that remove at the last moment what is this dangerous mercedes achieved their first one-two finish of the season while ricardo took his third consecutive podium vettel was fourth ahead of the two force india's reichenham was seventh but in ninth place lance troll scored the first points of his f1 career vettel continued to lead the points with hamilton second by a reduced margin raikkonen and ricardo were now both on 73 points while ocon moved ahead of science into eighth mercedes reclaimed the constructor's lead while force india increased their advantage over toro rosso and williams a familiar feeling for hamilton winning in canada and receiving the trophy on a day that saw vettel failed to make the podium for the first time in 2017 [Applause] adding yet another podium finish to his tally daniel ricardo celebrated in his own unique style and acting legend sir patrick stewart was up for a bit of mayhem as well [Applause] would you like something i'd love something yeah you're a good man cheers [Applause] i will drink out of anybody's shoes azerbaijan hosted its first grand prix in 2016 and once again delivered glorious weather as its capital city baku welcomed both the stars and the fans to the party with music supplied by the black eyed peas and nicole schwartzinger [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Applause] mercedes were pumped after qualifying as hamilton took poll from bottas for an all silver arrows front row and kimmy reich in an outqualified sebastian vettel for a ferrari second row max verstappen qualified fifth ahead of sergio perez esteban ocon was just a few hundredths of a second slower in seventh while lance stroll qualified at best to date eighth for williams mata lined up ninth with ricardo tenth after a crash in qualifying the second longest track on the calendar was about to come alive to the drama of f1 hamilton started briskly from the outside and closed off bottas who was almost collected by vettel caviat ran wide on entry and as he rejoined carlos sites took avoiding action and spun but it was the two fins that touched in turn two with reichen and making contact with the wall and vettel taking full advantage to move into second perez also benefited as did max verstappen and kimi found himself dropping into the malay a replay of the start from the vantage point of carlos science and it all got away from him on the exit of the first corner [Music] but at least contact was avoided yeah danny can walk like a mudman through a truck the view from bottas's carved the incident to turn two showed how he hopped the curb and swiped riken and ferrari the subsequent puncture would see him lose a great deal of time returning to the pits [Music] a new front wing was fitted and a new set of tyres but the newest winner in f1 was now a lap down on his key opposition daniel ricardo stopped on lap six earlier than originally planned due to the fact he picked up debris from that accident brakes are now fine everything is okay we had some debris in the brake scoop and everything got very hot very quickly so now debris is clear you are free to race let's go ricardo rejoined on a more durable soft tire in 17th place and quickly set about moving forwards he utilized the long flat out section at the end of the lap to pick up a slipstream and passed both carlos sites and marcus erickson in one stylish move into turn one [Music] [Applause] danny kvietz had survived a tricky start but was about to suffer a complete shutdown on his car and was forced to stop in a tricky area of the circuit meanwhile max verstappen's race was also about to go wrong despite running in a competitive fourth place [Music] was getting all too accustomed to such messages but over in race control concerns about kavia's abandoned machine led to the safety car being deployed and therefore an ideal opportunity for many drivers to make a pit stop race leader hamilton stopped cleanly as did his closest pursuer vettel after a brief restart more debris led to another safety car period and much scampering from the marshals to clear the track [Music] having been beaten away at the last restart vettel was determined to stay close this time as hamilton took over the job of controlling the pace but vettel got too close and then lost his rag [Music] ray he fred tested me what the going on literally just came alongside me and turned in and hit me [Music] these were tense moments for everyone but hamilton wasn't to be distracted and as the lights went green he was already pulling away vettel was under huge threat from both force india's and the williams of philippe massa who took a look on the rundown to turn one while perez was now forced to defend from ocon the two forced india's almost touched on the approach to turn two and then did touch through the corner causing damage to both cars [Applause] what did they do guys the carriages pointed to to the left massively it was a huge blow to force india's hopes of a top result and the resulting debris also afflicted raikkonen who picked up a rear puncture as a result it looked like the end of the race for perez while ocon's car could be repaired and sent back out the damage on ryken and ferrari was more severe and to the disappointment of his many fans it looked like it was all over as the team decided to push the car back into the garage but he was about to be handed another opportunity debris had become a major problem and race control decided to stop the race entirely to allow the track to be cleaned up under red flag conditions all cars stopped in the pit lane and it gave hamilton a chance to inspect any damage that had been caused by vettel running into him the ferrari driver was at least able to have a new front wing fitted at this stage lance stroll was running well in fourth position and being encouraged accordingly but ferrari had used the delay to good effect get my gloves and steering wheel gloves gloves steering wheel claps and steering wheel here hey hey steering wheel somebody told him to give it to me [Music] come on finally kimmy was free to go well almost as the race was restarted it was hamilton once again who broke away from vettel but all the action was going on behind felipe massa was in third ahead of teammate stroll and the renault of hulkenberg but daniel ricardo took all three cars on the way into turn one in a move that would have huge [Music] consequences right brilliant mate stay focused let's keep it smooth now stay ahead massa's williams was now handling poorly and he dropped behind hulkenberg but both were about to be eclipsed by magnuson as the house moved into fifth and having lost palmer early in the race with a mechanical problem renault's day took a further dive when nico hulkenberg miscalculated i hit the wall it was a lost opportunity for the team in a race that had already been full of incident and which was about to get even more bizarre okay this looks like headrest is just a little bit loose at the back just see if you can pull it into position on the straight a loose headrest was a major safety issue that had to be sorted so we've been instructed we have to pick to this lap and sure enough hamilton was called into the pits for a replacement to be fitted and then sent on his way that meant that vettel was now leading the grand prix but not for long we have a 10 second stop and go penalty for ranger who's driving okay box confirm the box everything you have will be closed what did i do with dangerous driving we speak after now keep your head down vettel rejoined after his penalty for sideswiping hamilton and still emerged in front of the former race leader but they were now seventh and eighth [Music] overall 10 seconds is not enough for driving behavior like that [Music] [Applause] [Music] a race that had been under full mercedes control was turning into one where picking up whatever points could be gained became the priority [Music] drs indeed from being a lat down at one stage bottas was catching the second place car of stroll rapidly and the williams team was a bag of nerves as the laps ticked by there was no question as to who was leading however as daniel ricardo had driven a superb race from 10th on the grid grabbing every opportunity that came his way and recorded red bull's first win of the season in the background bottas dived out of stroll slipstream to snatch second place right on the line [Music] ricardo's fifth career win came after an extraordinary race but he delivered in style as lance stroll celebrated his first ever podium finish in formula one ricardo became the fourth winner of the season beating bottas by just under four seconds stroll missed out on second place but still had plenty to celebrate while vettel earned two more points than hamilton okon was sixth magnus and seventh and alonso took his and mclaren's first points of the season while their line was ten vettel marginally increased his title lead while ricardo moved into fourth ahead of raikkonen perez failed to score for only the second time in 2017 while renault were the only team who didn't score points in baku [Music] daniel ricardo's fourth consecutive podium finish had delivered the big result victory in azerbaijan for his delighted red bull crew i honestly i'm i'm speechless after the race on the cooldown lap i was kind of just giggling giggling like a little schoolboy so you want some no no no keep talking keep talking so uh stroll's first podium think about it so he certainly deserves one is he old enough to drink candy so you realize this is going to scar me for life that's it oh my god i'm too young for this [Applause] youngest ever podium finisher lance roll fantastic put it there buddy yeah i'm just lost for words right now it was um it was a hectic race people you know crashing and we just stayed out of trouble you know i just kept my head cool and uh took it to the end and our pace was good just lost out to valtteri there in the end i think that was probably one of the closest finishes of all time so yeah we were side by side crossing the finish line but what a race i mean i i i couldn't believe coming into the weekend that i'd be standing here on the podium it's um it's so amazing but after the race all the talk was about this moment between vettel and hamilton it sets the present within formula one i think it also does for all the young kids that are watching us for one drivers drive and conduct ourselves they've seen today how our immortal four-time world champion behaves and i think uh hopefully that doesn't ripple into the younger categories i don't agree with the penalty that i got because if you penalize us or if you penalize me then you should penalize both of us because it was not the way to do it championship rivals sebastian vettel and lewis hamilton banged wheels during a thrilling azerbaijan grand prix with both men unhappy at the others driving came alongside me and hit me he fred tested me what the but were they right to be upset with each other the rules say the leader must stay within 10 car lengths of the safety car but when the race is due to resume it's his job to control the pace of the field making sure he doesn't pass the safety car before it returns to the pits something hamilton timed to perfection at the first restart leaving vettel in his wake and under threat from sergio perez's force india so at the second time of asking vettel understandably kept much closer to his rival but ended up making contact with the rear of hamilton's car causing minor damage to both cars i damaged my front wing i think he paid a price as well by having slight damage to his car as well i don't think it was very deliberate for him to break check me i don't think he's that kind of guy but obviously that's what it turned out to be and that's what it did so i wasn't happy with that drivers often weave and break behind the safety car in order to keep up temperatures in their brakes and tires but the fia stewards in baku examined hamilton's telemetry from the second restart and found it to be in order however they decided to issue vettel with a reprimand and a 10 second stop go penalty for this action a few moments afterwards 10 seconds not enough okay a baby like that you know that charlie there were other sanctions available to the stewards ranging from a grid penalty at their next race to disqualification or even a one race ban but it was decided this punishment equivalent to 30 seconds of race time as a penalty once time driving through the pits is taken into account was the fairest though vettel remained perplexed i don't get it why i was done 10 seconds i cannot recall somebody got a 10 seconds penalty and he's right to find it hard to remember a precedent as collisions behind the safety car are very rare juan pablo montoya and michael schumacher both retired after coming together at monaco in 2004. and vettel himself ran into mark webber in torrential reign at fuji in 2007 and was ultimately given a reprimand ironically hamilton was also reprimanded that day for bunching up the field at the front this chaotic race in azerbaijan will be remembered for a clash between two living legends that soured their previously sporting battle for the formula one world championship [Music] the giant metal red bull adorning the green hills above spielberg indicated the team's arrival in austria to the twists and turns of a picturesque circuit but hamilton started the event on the back foot as a change of gearbox would lead to a five-place grid penalty his fastest lap was eclipsed by valtteri bottas just a few moments later and then it was vettel's turn to see what the ferrari could do [Applause] it was a good lap but not quite good enough [Music] [Applause] a huge contingent from the netherlands was supporting max verstappen but the flying dutchman made a rare error and would qualify in fifth position [Music] so bottas took poll from vettel with kimi raikkonen qualifying in third place and daniel ricardo in fourth in fifth place max verstappen was joined on the third row by roman grosjean in the house while sergio perez had lewis hamilton for company his third fastest time becoming eighth on the grid with the gearbox penalty espenofcon and carlos science completed the top 10. we were about to see an electrifying getaway by bottas the finn leapt off the line to lead into the first corner chased by vettel and raikkonen danny caveat had qualified 14th but in his eagerness to improve he lopped the brakes into turn one and smacked into fernando alonso in the process also taking out the red bull of verstappen much to the team's dismay bottas had already made the break while raikkonen was fighting a three-way tussle for third which daniel ricardo just managed to edge at turn three lewis hamilton was fighting for sixth with sergio perez but the mexican wasn't going to give up without a fight [Applause] bottas was beginning to open up a gap but vettel was unhappy about his rapid start i think he jumped the okay i understood can you say to charlie [Applause] after considering the replays the fia stewards decided that bottas had timed his getaway to perfection unfortunately max verstappen wasn't going anywhere okay max please pull over stop the car [Applause] his third consecutive non-finish did not impress his father yoss while fernando alonso was also out of the grand prix too soon we did a good start again we took benefit from carlos hamburg stop in a bad start so we were already p10 and then arrived to the first corner and the guys behind arrived too quick but uh yeah nothing that is in our hands having dropped behind the house of grozo on lap one kimi raikkonen regained fourth place on lap three once drs was enabled hamilton still found himself behind perez but on lap 8 he used the long section from turn 1 to turn 3 to close that gap and timed his overtake to perfection squeezing into sixth place there was still work to be done but it didn't take much longer to catch roman grosjean hamilton passed him for fifth using the grippier line on breaking on the entry to turn four next on the list was kimi raikkonen but the ferrari was proving a slightly more difficult hurdle so under the watchful eye of ferrari president sergio mercedes pitted hamilton in an attempt to use the undercut [Music] vettel was brought in soon afterwards to respond not only to hamilton's tactics but also to ricardo's as he'd also stopped and was running ahead of lewis vettel rejoined in third behind raikkonen who was yet to stop bottas was in second with ricardo now in fourth place and about to lap hulkenberg while hamilton was fifth [Music] mercedes knew the race wasn't in the bag bottas on fresh tyres was in danger of being held up by raikkonen on old rubber but with the help of drs the younger of the two finns was able to retake the lead on lap 44 [Music] with the race entering its latter stages bottas was in front but vettel was chasing him down while the race for third was also heating up as ricardo attempted to maintain a gap over hamilton and score another podium for red bull this time on home turf with just two laps to go vettel was almost in the wheel tracks of bottas while hamilton was perfectly poised behind daniel ricardo [Applause] through turn three hamilton worked on a good exit then used drs to draw alongside on the approach to turn four but ricardo braked super late into the downhill right-hander and managed to stay ahead up front bottas had again soaked up enormous pressure just as in sochi and consequently took his second win of the season vettel finished in second place and ricardo an encouraging third in front of a mercedes that was in full health [Music] [Applause] unlike another finnish racing driver haki valtteri bottas was no longer a one-win wonder yes great job great job really yes yeah guys thank you that's good bottas won by less than a second from vettel while ricardo earned his fifth successive podium hamilton had to settle for fourth with raikkonen fifth and grosjean in a season's best sixth perez nokom put baku behind them with a double points finish at force india and the two williams completed the top ten vettel eased away from hamilton by a further six points while bottas re-energised his own title hopes verstappen's non-finish meant he dropped to seventh the constructor's order remained the same but hass closed in on toro rosso thanks to grosjean's sixth place baltery bottas converted pole position into a victory for the first time in his career delivering for mercedes on a tricky day for hamilton and soaking up any questions that could be thrown at him [Applause] i could feel and see the car was moving after the lights were off so and the reaction was positive not not negative and that's all what counts you know 15 points behind your teammate who in turn is 20 points behind sebastian vettel you're in this championship fight aren't you definitely you know still we're not even halfway through the year so for sure still in the fight and only gonna get better so looking forward three days later the green countryside of austria was exchanged for some iconic uk landmarks at a very special event f1 live in london [Applause] you are part of history you are part of the first ever f1 live it's the first time ever outside of a grand prix you have all 10 teams brought together and whereas it happened here in london very special to be around here so many friends around seeing cars racing london amazing [Applause] the fans very close to us enjoying this moment to hear the cars and to wake up you know their senses fantastic ferrari it's gotta be ferrari we've got kaiser chiefs on stage we've been said to entertain you and entertain you must is like crazy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] incredible just absolutely great it's bloody brilliant for london we've taken one of the world's greatest sports one of the world's greatest cities we've just had a party right it's great for formula one it's great for us drivers it's great for the fans what a day to be alive the 68th running of the british grand prix as part of the world championship took place at silverstone where the campsites were packed to the rafters and as qualifying began on a wet but drying track fernando alonso used all of his guile and skill to select slick tyres for the very last part of q1 and then put a lap together that saw him go fastest of all in the mclaren honda it was a brief ray of sunshine in a generally gloomy year but as the track was now dry it was up to the usual pacesetters to go to the top of the timesheet and at silverstone lewis hamilton always finds a little bit extra he took pole position by a full six tenths of a second nice work lewis looks like the pole position mate well done hamilton's fifth pole at his home event saw him share the front row with kimi raikkonen as he had done 10 years previously the second row saw vettel and verstappen and they were followed by nico hulkenberg using an updated flaw on the renault and by sergio perez two rising stars ocon and vandorn were on row four and the fifth row saw bottas carrying a five-place gearbox penalty and roman grosjean in 10th [Music] film star guests owen wilson and woody harrelson made the most of their special access to do some filming of their own while reigning champion nico rosberg looked almost as intense on the sidelines as when in the car but the drama began before the race even started [Music] i've got a hydraulic problem okay joe we need to go to neutral and stop the car please neutral and stop the car we lost hydraulics julian palmer suffered hydraulic failure and was a non-starter for his home event a bitter pill to swallow but the other british driver on the grid had most of the attention and as the lights were extinguished hamilton made the best launch to ease ahead of raikkonen on the approach to abby corner max verstappen initially moved into third but then got checked up by kimi which allowed vettel to sweep past on the approach to village never one to be easily outdone max immediately responded with a perfectly judged run around the outside of the loop to regain third place further around lap one and the two toro rossos were about to do the unthinkable they took each other off and science was out on the spot [Music] yeah all okay you can tell danny he did a very [Music] hamilton led the race from raikkonen verstappen vettel and hulkenberg while esteban ocon was holding on to sixth place in the very locally built force india daniel ricardo had suffered a broken turbo in qualifying and the resultant engine penalty saw him start at the back he was making progress but being eased wide at luffield didn't help his cause could i lose the car okay nice i think it's so hard meanwhile his teammate verstappen was now under severe pressure from vettel who used to slip stream down hang a straight and dive to the inside of stowe corner but once again max would not give up he stuck resolutely around the outside contact was made but verstappen could give as well as he took and by leaning on vettel he stayed ahead he wants to play bumper cars or something valtteri bottas was catching them both and vettel decided to have another go this time to the outside of stowe but verstappen held on deploying techniques that sebastian was none too happy about that [Music] [Applause] the situation required a rethink and vettel was brought in on lap 19 for soft tyres red bull responded the very next lap under pressure from both ferrari and mercedes so this is your chance battery just get the hammer down the tires are looking good [Music] verstappen's stop was not the best however and as he rejoined he found himself behind vettel raikkonen was the next to the front runners to come in from second and his stop went exactly to plan [Music] williams were not having their most competitive british grand prix but the significance of the 40th anniversary of the team was lost on no one and sir frank was on hand to watch every move [Music] bottas came in on lap 33 after a long first stint and switched to the supersoft tyre he would exit the pits ahead of verstappen the other red bull of ricardo was making more progress now passing the force india of sergio perez [Music] and soon afterwards the matching car of esteban ocon nice job magnuson next yes bottas on his fresh tires was now close behind vettel in the race for third and through becketts he squeezed every ounce of momentum out of the car in order to attack into stone it was a brave move that vettel fended off for now but there was a certain inevitability that on older tyres vettel was vulnerable [Applause] and sure enough potass passed on lap 45 great job minimal talking into the closing stages and kimi raikkonen appeared to be on target for a second place finish too far back from hamilton to attack but comfortably ahead of bottas until my left front tire broke [Applause] [Music] it was a huge blow to ferrari but it was about to get worse a sebastian vettel suffered a puncture on a front tire and almost lost control of the car the hamilton fans were delirious but ferrari couldn't quite believe what was happening so hamilton matched jim clark in winning the british grand prix for a fifth time as well as taking four in a row in the uk it was another perfect afternoon for him and his crew [Applause] beautiful work there mates lovely job home grand prix mate can't beat it can you fantastic job guys fantastic job what can i say about these fans we've got the best fans here thank you everyone it turned up i see you out there thank you god bless you lewis won by a big margin but mercedes took only their second one-two finish of the season ryken finished third after a pit stop verstappen was fourth from ricardo but vettel dropped to seventh and lost 19 points to hamilton felipe massa took the final point in 10th hamilton closed to within one point of the championship lead bottas remained in contention while verstappen moved back ahead of perez and hulkenberg moved up to 10th mercedes increased their gap to ferrari falls india further cemented their fourth place but mclaren remained resolutely last hamilton's fourth win of the season came at the perfect time and at the perfect venue for him to celebrate with as many people as possible double amputee billy munger joined in [Music] after the disappointment of baku disappointment of austria and a week in which you got hillary by the british press your preparation attacked your motivation attack to come here and do what you've done this weekend cut the gap back to one point was that do for you what does that do for this championship well i think i can't show you what it really does to those who wrote the all those negative stories but you know what it does and it's um coming into this weekend there was a lot of negativity and um i really you only have to look at my results not just this weekend but what i've achieved in my career to know that you don't really have to question my preparation you know and i think this weekend really just solidified that um i did something that i felt was right for me and and i performed the best i've performed all year this weekend so super happy with that and yeah we kind of needed this day from the high speeds of silverstone to the more convoluted nature of the hungaro ring the next venue would be a very different test but there was still time for drivers to enjoy themselves with some alternative sporting contests in the paddock williams reserve driver paul deresta had a late call-up on saturday to stand in for felipe massa who'd been taken ill the scot would be straight in at the deep end in qualifying having been fast in monaco there were high hopes at ferrari for this event and sure enough sebastian vettel was able to take pole position backed up by kimi raikkonen for an all ferrari front row it was the third all-red front row of the season and behind the ferraris bottas was faster than hamilton on row two the red bulls were next with max only nine hundredths of a second slower than lewis while alonso and van dorn proved the ability of the mclaren chassis with seventh and eighth on the grid carlos science was ninth and palmer inherited 10th after hulkenberg took a gearbox penalty the hungarian grand prix first run in 1986 sought glorious conditions on race day vettel was promptly off the line and led towards turn one chased hard by raikkonen but verstappen on the outside made a great getaway to ease past the mercedes until he was forced to back off behind kimmy that allowed bottas threw into third but it also put max under pressure from teammate ricardo and as they dropped down into turn two [Music] contact was made verstappen's car survived but ricardo suffered an instantaneous puncture yes saw loser the australian was out and his fans were distraught [Music] at the head of the pack vettel led from raikkonen bottas verstappen and hamilton and lewis was anxious to reduce the gap to his title rival by overtaking max but the dutchman wasn't going to hand him fourth place on a plate as on vettel at silverstone verstappen was hard but fair daniel was soon back at the red bull garage and reviewing the incident didn't make him feel any better [Music] vettel appeared to be in control but check the steering is hanging to the left when i go straight is it getting war so are you stable i thought it's getting first understood and that was allowing kimmy to catch up stuck now behind tip i start suffering because i'm getting loads my car is absolutely fine ferrari brought raikkonen in on lap 34 with actor ashton kutcher as an interested observer fernando alonso was enjoying a more competitive performance and attempted to pass carlos science for sixth place [Music] denied at turn one the double world champion simply swept around the outside of turn 2 instead [Music] max verstappen pitted on lap 43 but the mechanics had to stand and wait while he served his 10 second penalty for the incident involving ricardo before they were allowed to continue normal procedures [Music] [Applause] [Music] in third and fourth places were the two mercedes with hamilton catching bottas and both closing down raikkonen is he going full street because obviously mercedes is catching i don't think that they're going to understand he has handling issues at the minute kimmy he's struggling with his handling we're on the backup radio now see if you can transmit okay there's no joy on the back up for radio we see you keying up a loss of electrical power in the mercedes garage had affected radio communications to hamilton and that was compromising his race [Music] radio check i've got your back louise yeah i could hear you mate okay man look i've got a lot of peace let me use it i don't know why the ferraris are slow i don't know why yeah copy lewis we're looking into it we are looking into the situation we're aware this radio stuff sucks my last tires were perfect yeah i have to agree with you there lewis uh yeah it's all a bit rubbish at the moment uh but yeah keep your head down race is going to come to us just keep your tires in good shape and uh yeah things will start happening soon if i can't catch them and get partisan absolutely back past hamilton felt it was worth a try to have a go at the ferraris but he needed the cooperation of bottas mercedes management studied the implications and decided to give him the opportunity ferraris are just up ahead lewis will let you go by if you can't get past reichler and nikki louder could see exactly what was going on race ended early but he had done a very respectable job it's been very different to what i thought i was going to be doing here in friday night let alone where we are now and into the summer break and hopefully you know i can go with my shoulders held high because i think i've done as much as i could given the limited running now that hamilton was in third place kimmy knew he was going to be struggling to hold station yeah i'm gonna only ruin my tires even more this is what we're gonna do the whole rest of the race right now okay it was a tense battle but ultimately lewis could not find the chance he needed despite trying very hard and ferrari were about to deliver a one-two finish vettel took a crucial win and ferrari scored a maximum number of points in the constructors championship [Music] [Applause] and on the last corner of the last lap hamilton kept his word and allowed bottas to reclaim third place [Applause] 31 sebastian one and two well done well marriage nice drive thanks for that yeah it's a gentle and genuinely thing to do well done vettel won despite the steering problem to lead the second ferrari one two of the season while hamilton gave up three points and allowing bottas back into third verstappen was fifth but mclaren had their best result of the year with alonso sixth and vandoorne tenth carlos science finished ahead of both fort india's vettel opened up the points lead to 14 over hamilton but ricardo failed to add to his tally allowing raikkonen to close in mercedes were outscored on this occasion but retained the constructor's lead toro rosso closed to within two points of williams while mclaren finally moved ahead of sauber vettel's second ever win in hungary came at a valuable time after the run of format mercedes has been on how important is this win to get you back in the momentum going into the break well i don't think we ever lost the momentum i don't you know don't get me wrong but silverson wasn't good but the team was fired up to come back and i think we have a lot of momentum since the beginning of the year and i don't think no one will change that you know overnight so the team is going in the right direction we just need to focus on ourselves and keep doing what we're doing and hamilton's gesture and allowing bot ass through confirmed their harmonious relationship at mercedes hopefully that that shows that i'm a team player i'm a man of my word and uh i won't give up i hope we don't lose the championship for anything less or more than three points the summer break beckoned and alonso reprised his deck chair moment from brazil a couple of years ago to wish everyone a good time the majestic spa frankelshon brought the teams back together after three weekends off and there was no denying he was the star of the show in belgium so close to the dutch border a total of 265 000 fans turned up over the four days many to watch max verstappen who shares both belgian and dutch nationalities but races under a dutch license and orange was everywhere to be seen despite his three successive non-finishes between canada and austria which left him languishing sixth in the points he was the man at spa although the belgian fans were also celebrating the fact they truly had one of their own to support with stoffel van dorn making his home race debut on track emotive memories were rekindled when michael schumacher's 1994 championship winning benetton was demonstrated by his 18 year old son mick to commemorate his father's first grand prix win at spa some 25 years previously to be able to drive the f1 car here is just amazing and i'm really honored to be able to do that here schumacher ladies and gentlemen 18 years old what a great in terms of qualifying lewis hamilton was once again in blistering form and on a dry circuit he established fastest time by over two tenths of a second it was his 68th career pole position which meant he now equaled michael schumacher's all-time record [Applause] [Music] i'm i'm here to deliver a very special message from corinna schumacher and the schumacher family who want to congratulate you on equaling michael's record and as they said michael always said records are there to be beaten so they want to spend send their very special thanks congratulations lewis well done well done [Applause] sebastian vettel maintained ferrari's challenge as the points leader lined up with hamilton up front while their teammates mirrored those performances with bottas third and reikin and fourth fan favorite max verstappen qualified fifth ahead of ricardo for a red bull third row while nico hulkenberg lined up seventh in the renault ahead of perez in the force india okon was just over a tenth slower in ninth place and alonso inherited 10th after joly and palmer had to take penalties for a gearbox change round 12 at the championship got underway with a terrific launch by lewis hamilton while vettel had to be wary of bottas behind but was able to claim second at la source it was a remarkably clean run through the hairpin but it was about to get cramped on the descent to o'rouge hulkenberg to the left ochon to the right and contact with the wall and teammate perez but both got away with it hamilton had vettel tucked into his slipstream along the kemmel strait but despite the toe the ferrari couldn't quite draw ahead and the mercedes was in front at leicom bottas was third and reikin and fourth but for the red bull team and thousands of fans disappointment was on the way okay stand by max fail one fail fail one fail switch it off max pull over pull over to the right side switch it off unbelievable i can't believe this no words she's very disappointed um i just can't believe that it keeps happening you know and the sixth time this year is a fifty percent uh retirement you know it's unbelievable uh not happy at all as max's car was dealt with by the marshals kimi raikkonen was accelerating up through radio and he didn't appear to lift off the power at all despite the yellow flags and martial lights the mistake would cost him dearly however as he was given a 10 second stop and go penalty shortly afterwards this had to be taken in addition to his normal pit stop he would drop to seventh before reclaiming ground later in the race jolie and palmer had been enjoying one of his most competitive events of the season and was now engaged in a battle with fernando alonso who didn't intend to give up 12th place very easily [Music] oh come on a lot they just forced me straight off the track we'll report it having touched on lap one the two force india's were together again on lap 29 fighting over ninth place which for the moment belonged to perez but his french counterpart used drs out of the bus stop chicane to close up into la source and knowing this was a real opportunity he got a good exit and began to draw alongside justice perez decided to take his line for oh rouge this time the contact broke parts on both cars the resultant debris brought out the safety car and that proved something of a relief to hamilton whose right rear tyre was beginning to struggle he took on a new set of pirelli soft but vettel was able to put on a set of ultra softs that he'd saved and with the field bunching up as a result of the safety car the restart was going to be crucial hamilton was well aware of the danger and as the race got underway again he had to make the most of his track position knowing that vettel's ultras were likely to be more effective at least for a few laps vettel chased into la source where hamilton ran a touch wide and the ferrari was perfectly positioned on the approach to oh rouge to plan a pass on the exit using hamilton slipstream but clever tactics by lewis meant vettel was if anything too close almost tripping over the mercedes at the top of the hill costing him momentum onto the straight and try as he might he couldn't quite edge ahead before lake on in the meantime ricardo snatched third and riken and took fourth as bottas ran wide hulkenberg was holding a solid sixth for renault but at mercedes they knew that this was a race victory they had thoroughly earned against the ferrari which on the day was probably the faster car hamilton executed the perfect final stint to record his fifth win of the season an ideal start to the second half of the campaign vettel finished in second place well ahead of ricardo who nonetheless took his sixth podium of the year raikkonen was fourth from bottas hulkenberg beat the house of roman grosjean while massa finished ahead of okon who was ninth despite his adventures and carlos science claimed the final point in the championship vettel's advantage shrunk to seven points and hamilton was buzzing very conscious of what an important victory this had been [Applause] those last nine laps are like qualifying laps just every single lap qualifying that so it really took a lot in the in that last section to to keep the ferrari behind they had the better tire warms up faster so he was very very close in the initial phase so i had to play some small tactics when he got close into out of turn one like down the hill i had to let off the gas a little bit just to keep him because he doesn't want to overtake me before o'rouge because he knows i'll pass him again but i also the goal is to be you know a couple car lengths behind so you can tow and gain that rhythm and i stopped him from having that so we got the top of here we pulled out and we were alongside each other like this um ferrari were faster and um i you know i just had to do those qualifying laps and the team did a great job with the pit stops just to keep them at bay esteban is pushing saying he can overtake ricciardo if given the chance it's a waste of time i want the chance to overthink him i mean let us raise away please the rivalry between the force india teammates had been ramping up since the last laps in montreal the movie did wasn't fair i think i did a very late move at a very very high speed which could have left us both out of the race [Music] a situation heated up still further at the very next race in baku when on a restart the pair of them squeezed into turn two and ran out of space it cost perez a finish what did they do guys i think he was just over aggressive you know he touched me after turn one he went he went on me i don't know if he saw me or not and i think what happened today is totally unacceptable for the team three races later and once more it all got a little too close this time in term one in budapest although both went on to score points just a little touch from from esteban but i think all is good [Music] but for the team belgium was a step too far the first brush could be explained away as a lap one racing incident but later in the race more serious contact was made which could have ended in a far worse outcome [Music] honestly what is this guy doing broken now now is the time you better get up when you're down with the cow yeah i saw him i saw that that he was there but uh obviously many many drivers they protect the line and it's what i did you know i protect my line there was no room for him to go to go anywhere that's just how not professional is recently he has never done that with with any other teammates and yeah i think i will go men to men to see to see him and you know tell him the truth and i'm not gonna be scared of him there are few fans more passionate in motorsport than the italians and on the first day preceding the italian grand prix thousands gathered in milan for an f1 drivers parade using some of the beautiful machinery that raced in the millimelia in years gone by [Music] we have a lot of fans here for ferrari and the forces so hopefully hopefully we can give them a strong weekend this week well it's always a real pleasure to come to monza you know i really appreciate the the support from the from the fans here so thank you for all the support and for the passion for formal ones so really happy to be here at monza itself a temporary car track was created where f1 stars could take on legends from the champions league in order to raise money for charity so barriers being knocked over this is neck and neck and on the line ricardo just gets it for the extra weight he's carrying bravo 2017 marked the 70th anniversary of ferrari and that meant some special celebration involving enzo san piero ferrari we are we are in monza i have been here my first time 1961 and from 1961 i've been here every year so i have memory of very important victories i have really good memories and even difficult moments because this is formula one current president sergio marchionne made the most of the occasion qualifying however was not such a cheerful affair heavy rain left the track soaked and with standing water on the resurfaced start finish straight it was always going to be difficult roman grosjean clouded the barriers on one side and bounced across to the other but thankfully was unheard it was stupid to lose recording sorry it was stupid team principal gunther steiner was already counting the damage and the session was delayed until conditions improved drivers and their families found various ways to pass the time [Applause] including swapping steering wheel for tv camera but while max verstappen was content making a home movie daniel ricardo decided to visit the neighbors to see what could be learned there meanwhile the mercedes drivers maintained their competitive mindset with some gaming guys this is this is the exciting excitement for the day we've done two laps or one lap each there's two laps one right two two laps each they should just go huh yeah when they did finally emerge max verstappen demonstrated his usual wet weather skills to set what would be the second fastest lap while another teenager shining in the murky conditions was lance stroll just three tenths of a second slower slotting in between was daniel ricardo but both red bulls were to have numerous power unit related grid penalties and ultimately nobody could deny lewis hamilton his 69th and record-breaking pole position in the sort of conditions that he thrives upon it was another magnificent display and the perfect way to achieve the outright pole record thanks to the red bull penalties lance stroll became f1's youngest ever front row starter alongside hamilton ocon earned his best grid slot while bottas was fourth and then the two ferraris were only fifth and sixth on home soil nasa was seventh ahead of danny caviat who'd not reached the top ten but was promoted due to other penalties as was kevin magnussen who dropped out in q1 sergio perez completed the fifth row the weather was complete contrast on race day bright sunshine bounced off the cars as hamilton led from the start and strolled bog down just a touch which allowed ochon to attack on the outside [Music] and complete the move into second under breaking at the chicane the narrow first corner was navigated safely by most but masa did make glancing contact with perez bottas had started fourth but was under pressure from raikkonen and the ferrari moved ahead before the second chicane as the tifosi urged the red cars to deliver a strong result but bottas hadn't given up on his claim to fourth and approaching parabolica he was perfectly poised to sweep around the outside of raikkonen it was brave racing from both finns but the mercedes held sway to the delight of game of thrones stars kit harrington and liam cunningham [Applause] one lap later and bottas was bearing down on lance stroll the young canadian couldn't resist the pace of the mercedes and bottas was now into third place further back in the tussle for seventh max verstappen attempted to go around felipe mata but the brazilian wasn't in any mood to concede and the two cars touched we have damage yeah i think so foxtail oh what is he doing the tyre peeled from the rim while he was still three quarters of a lap away from the pit entrance and making it back without incurring further damage was not going to be easy [Music] [Applause] in the race for fifth sebastian vettel was closing on teammate raikkonen and while kimi fought off his advances approaching the rogers chicane a slight error on exit allowed vettel the opportunity he'd been looking for and that got the approval of his dad four laps later he was in fourth place ahead of stroll and attacking ochon for third which he secured on the brakes into retifeelio after their brush at spa julian palmer was once again racing alonso this time for 13th his superior straight line speed almost gained him the advantage but alonso fought back on the brakes and palmer ran wide rejoining without lifting off and much to alonso's displeasure continued to race hard what time it is [Music] honda's engine operation was none too happy but it became irrelevant on lap 25 when palmer was forced to retire with broken transmission where is palmer palmer has retired on lap 41 raikkonen was running in fourth place but being chased by daniel ricardo who'd started 16th due to the grid penalties but from a long way back the australian pulled off yet another of his daring late-breaking maneuvers to pass the ferrari and claim that fourth place for his own fernando alonso failed to make it to the chequered flag once again although he would be classified 15th but with vandorn already out with power unit failure it was another black day for mclaren but it was gold for lewis hamilton once again as he rounded the final corner to win for the fourth time in italy and by doing so he now took a clear lead in the drivers championship for the first time in 2017. [Applause] the two williams drivers hadn't reached the flag yet and their race was looking pretty intense stroll was seventh from masa and the brazilian was using all the tricks developed during 14 years of formula one but the reigning fia formula free champion was ready for him he kept the door firmly closed and held on for what would be his fourth point score of the season [Music] hamilton led homer mercedes 1-2 only the third of the season ferrari were well and truly beaten while ricardo made 12 places to finish fourth ahead of raikkonen ocon was a solid sixth from the two williams perez also scored for force india but the earlier puncture relegated verstappen to 10th hamilton took a three-point lead in the championship having won both races since the summer break bottas remained in the title hunt while ricardo eased slightly further ahead of raikkonen vettel had brought ferrari a podium finish and something for the fans to celebrate but hamilton had dominated the event and was going to make the most of such a special podium observed by carbon champagne can this energy is like nowhere else we ever really get to see apart from maybe silverstone so i respect it i appreciate it and um but i'm happy we did a great job the team did an exceptional job this weekend mercedes power's definitely better than ferrari power so it worked well this weekend volcanic [Applause] the term pole position originates in horse racing seven stallions of the world circuits each has become the best over a single lap as they traveled the world perfecting the science of speed fittingly the first pole sitter was the first world champion giuseppe antonia farina who started from the front of the 1950 british grand prix but three races later juan manuel fangio claimed the record with his second poll in switzerland in 1953 alberto askari raised the bar again before fangio claimed his record back at the nurburgring the following year it would be 13 years before someone surpassed him and it was the quiet champion jim clark who earned his 30th hole position in the 1967 canadian grand prix next came senna in 1989 the charismatic legend claimed his 34th poll in the united states of america then there was michael schumacher a man who broke all the records and now a new breed of hero lewis hamilton has ascended the mountain the fastest of his generation 69 times he's beaten the best of the best over a single lap witnessing greatness in other individuals such as michael and dreaming of one day being doing what he's doing what they're doing and then to actually be there many years later it's uh it's crazy the record books are rarely rewritten this is history in the making the one and only nighttime race came next on the calendar as singapore came alive to some f1 fever [Applause] [Music] the nighttime energy spread into vettel's blistering qualifying lap which saw him sparking off the wall on his way to pole position it would be his first pole since hungary but his fourth on the singapore street track in the past seven years including two now with ferrari we want sebastian pole position nice one his advantage was three tenths of a second over max verstappen who earned only his second ever front row start red bull backed that up with third for ricardo while raikkonen was fourth the two mercedes had struggled throughout practice hamilton lined up fifth and bottas was sixth nico hulkenberg was best to the rest but fernando alonso took his second best grid position of the year in eighth followed by teammate van dorn and carlos sainz [Music] in 10 years of the singapore race there'd never been a wet one that was about to change as heavy evening rain soaked the circuit but eased off before the actual race start teams were divided in their choice of running either intermediates or full wets at the start but the top six cars all went for inters on what was still a very slippery surface as the lights went out verstappen launched well and vettel began to move left to cover him but raikkonen had rocketed through from third and impact all three cars touched raikkonen was now out of control ran back into verstappen who also collected alonso it was a nightmare for both red bull and fort ferrari because although vettel had still led into turn one he was about to spin on his own cars fluids which were leaking due to the damage incurred incredibly hamilton was now leading the pack which was slowed by the safety car being deployed while his championship rival was running backwards without a nose cone vettel's race was over he would retire at the end of the lap [Applause] the onboard from verstappen showed no deviation on his part he was simply the meat in a ferrari sandwich i got damaged goddammit as the three cars headed into each other hamilton from fifth on the outside had a dream getaway drawing level with vettel into the first corner just as alonso became an innocent victim of the chaos behind vettel's instinctive reaction was to come across on vistapen in order to defend his position but what he hadn't allowed for was another car his teammate on the inside and there simply wasn't space i understand you know kimi was of course also going for for a good start and he saw that he had a good start so he was going for the right line but then he started to squeeze a bit to the right and then sebastian came quite aggressively to the left which i don't understand you know when you're fighting for the championship and then try to be that aggressive in the start while lewis is behind you quite comfortably um yeah it's not uh i think the smartest move to do at the end of the day i'm happy that the three of us retired so it's not only me vettel's rearward facing camera showed that his launch was not the best and as a consequence it all started to go wrong i had an average start i think not ideal bit conservative maybe too conservative in the beginning then okay and then i saw max trying to chase down to the first corner and the next thing i hear is a field and here's contact and then that was it i was still able to carry on but the damage that happened at the start was making us stop obviously it sucks being on the wrong side of the track now but that's what it is as for hamilton he made the perfect start he was in the right place to avoid the collision and found himself second into turn one and then leading a few moments later [Music] once the race was back up to speed hamilton led from ricardo with hulkenberg third and perez fourth while palmer was making the most of the conditions to move into fifth place ahead of valtteri bottas behind them came the remaining mclaren of vandoorne then ochon and sites while some areas of the track were beginning to dry others were still very slippery as danny kavia discovered on lap 10. a pure driving error on his part put him out of a race in which his teammate would go on to shine the resultant safety car meant hamilton would have to build an advantage again but he was in imperious form and once the barriers were repaired he was able to pull away once more but dealing with the mix of conditions was not easy as marcus erickson proved a little later in the race [Applause] hamilton avoided the incident but it was race over for ericsson oh okay marcus oh it's over yeah i can see the rear your rear left okay switch off the car yeah okay another safety car period left the leader less than impressed why another safety car surely bsc would work but there were problems of a more fundamental kind for nico hulkenberg and despite the best efforts of the team to cure an oil leak the german would retire on lap 48. up front hamilton had once again opened an advantage and as the end of the race approached he was on his way to a highly significant victory ricardo was second bottas third but in a career-best fourth place was toro rosso's highly delighted carlos science lewis hamilton took his third straight win since august with ricardo in second and bottas earning his 10th podium of the year science was fourth from perez palmer also had a career best finish in sixth as did stoffel vandorn in seventh stroll was eighth from grosjean and ocon from leading by three points after italy hamilton was now 28 points in front of vettel a huge difference in just one race ricardo pulled away from raikkonen while perez was now tied with verstappen as the fireworks celebrated his win hamilton was aware that things had gone his way today the miracle that i needed was the rain you know we've come here all these years 10 years we've never had rain on a sunday even in qualifying so it's the first time we're all driving in the rain when that happened i'm like yes this is this is my day because none of us we're all starting from scratch it levels the playing field truly believe that i if anyone's going to find the grip faster than the other i truly believe i can do that so i was confident i was gonna be able to fight everyone and i was looking forward to that battle but then everyone went missing hamilton's seventh win of 2017 established a healthy margin in the title race but ricardo had other concerns go ahead come on stop it the final foreseeable running of the malaysia grand prix was next but friday practice saw a frightening accident for roman grosjean are you okay what happened i lost her i lost the wind something like that on the go yeah okay yeah something bad on review it became clear he'd hit a raised drain cover on the apex of turn 13 which had ripped the right rear tyre clean off the rim [Music] analysis and extra fixings were made to all drain covers on track overnight [Music] at toro rosso danny caviat was out and pierre gasly was in the reigning gp2 champion was making his debut at the top level qualifying was kilometers for ferrari vettel's engine refused to run cleanly and despite the concerted efforts of the entire team the title challenger was out in q1 hamilton snatched pole position yet again this time on home turf for team sponsor petronas [Applause] hamilton had a tiny advantage over raikkonen who joined him on the front row while verstappen and ricardo were separated this time by five hundredths of a second bottas qualified fifth with ochon again strong in sixth position while van dorn was a career-best seventh and hulkenberg was eighth perez and alonso took up the mid-grid positions race day in malaysia i have no power on the subcommittee we just can get round to the grid and try and fix the issue on the grid ferrari's weekend was going from bad to worse okay timmy we go to the garage and try and fix the problem we go to the garage and try and fix the problem uh rueful raikkonen could do nothing as a repeat of vettel's qualifying problem reared its head now on his car hamilton was thus alone on the front row and the race appeared to be his for the taking a good start saw him ahead of the red bulls but valtteri bottas was also away well and eased alongside and then ahead of ricardo into turn one that put him perfectly into position to challenge verstappen as well max fended off the mercedes at turn two but bottas wasn't finished yet and attempted to get alongside into turn four again the dutchman maintained second place and was now free to go chasing after the race leader for once hamilton was not having it all his own way and on lap four verstappen made a superb move on the inside of turn one to take the lead [Music] that's how we do it what am make right let's clear the drs think about your ties now [Applause] max was now in command but teammate ricardo soon saw his own opportunity to pass bottas into turn one ricardo ran wheel to wheel with the fin that valtteri fought back and edged ahead into turn three picked up the slipstream and tried again this time into turn four [Music] and as they accelerated up the hill to the next left-hander he was finally able to complete the move he'd started a third of a lap earlier vettel had started right at the back but by lap 24 he was battling for fourth with bottas [Music] unable to pass on track ferrari brought him in and mercedes responded the next time around but the pace of the italian machine on new tyres and in clear air was just too much and vettel swept past into fourth place the tears were not of sadness but of joy as victoria verstappen watched her brother head towards his second ever f1 win on the day after his 20th birthday it was a result few had expected up against a healthy mercedes of hamilton but red bull had demonstrated their massive improvement since the start of the year [Applause] super super job max that's really great drives and uh happy birthday mate i enjoyed that one so uh welcome to being a 20 year old great uh great start to a new decade for you well done thank you very much christian god was great and just to finish off ferrari's wacky weekend in the tropics despite vettel finishing fourth my pedals just ran right into the side of me is that possible stroll is not looking where he's going he completely shunted into my car i mean seriously decided to go offline just as vettel was overtaking on the slowdown lap and contact was inevitable uh yeah very bizarre obviously with the shunt on the inland i don't know why i think lance wasn't looking so i think he was looking at his wheel i gave enough room but then we made contact verstappen took red bull's second win of the year while hamilton finished two places ahead of vettel to further consolidate his points lead bottas was only fifth but vandoorne repeated his seventh place from singapore and both williams were in the points vestapan was still down in sixth place in the championship but had moved ahead of perez while hamilton's lead over vettel was up to 34 points just two races after the gap had been only free daniel ricardo had won this race 12 months previously for red bull and now max verstappen took the team's fifth win at sepang on a day when mercedes couldn't quite keep up red bull had delivered a double podium and the dutch superstar was in seventh heaven what a special day buddy second victory yesterday you turned 20. the previous win was it not a gift but this was you had to work so hard for so what was the main points and how did you get the job done today i think in the beginning straight away the car felt good and i saw lewis was struggling a bit with traction he was clipping a bit more than me so i used my battery as much as i could and of course you know he has more to lose than me in the championship so i went for it in turn one and from there when i could do my own race you know the car was unbelievable i had pace if i needed to speed up you know i i speed it up and yeah it's amazing you know it's very tough race but uh of course incredible to win round 16 of the series took place at suzuka in the land of the rising sun and some unique ways of celebrating f1 [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the japanese fans don't only support teams and drivers they even found ways to celebrate the chairman and ceo of f1 chase carey on saturday came the news that this would be julian palmer's final outing for renault and sadly his starting position would be relegated by power unit grid penalties [Music] the other end of the grid saw lewis hamilton take pole by over four tenths of a second from vettel with the two red bulls again on the second row ricardo faster this time by three hundredths of a second okon qualified fifth while bottas had been second fastest but a gearbox penalty put him sixth after allowing for a raikon penalty as well perez and massa were on row four and van dorn and raikkonen were on row five [Music] hamilton was away cleanly at the start and swept in front of vettel who had max and daniel bearing down on him with verstappen squeezing into third at turn one which subsequently put ricardo out of position and under threat from ocon who took full advantage and moved into fourth place in the pack it was so far pretty clean but it was about to go wrong for carlos science in his final outing for toro rosso the spaniard who would switch to renault for the next race was the first retirement in japan meanwhile in third place verstappen closed up on vettel and seeing a gap dive through at the hairpin [Music] it was a typically opportunistic piece of overtaking but vettel's car was already lacking some speed the other ferrari of kimi raikkonen attempted to pass nico hulkenberg but the german was having none of it and the iceman was forced wide losing a bunch of positions as a result vettel's lack of power became more obvious on the straight as he was swamped by cars on both sides with ricardo not quite passing okon at the same time but bottas also going through vettel was in trouble the deficit was less obvious through the esses but they were all about to slow down under virtual safety car carlos sites his car was being attended to after his mishap on lap one lost it simply as that no so say sorry to all of them not the way we wanted but i'm gonna remain positive and and thank them for all these three years that has been amazing with them still led but was not breaking away from verstappen ocon and ricardo while sergio perez was the next candidate to take advantage of vettel's misfortune massa and hulkenberg were preparing to do the same but their job was about to become even more straightforward [Music] sebastian box we retire the car i'm afraid vettel retired on lap four and his title hopes took another heavy blow as a result of the broken spark plug which was identified as the culprit we've done an incredible job so far obviously bitter the last last two races with the reliability issues but um you know it's like that sometimes of course it hurts and we're all disappointed but now i think the best is to get back get some rest and then yeah go flat out before the last four races and see what happens hulkenberg pitted on lap 40. my drs is stuck up but here is stuck open close some subtle engineering techniques were applied sadly to no effect and nico was out lance stroll had already endured a tough afternoon and he was about to go out with a puncture thankfully avoided by third place daniel ricardo the other red bull of verstappen was now right on the leaders gearbox and looking for any openings am i allowed to give it everything as long as you're sensible and you can take an opportunity then yes but losing time behind alonso didn't help dropping max out of the mercedes slipstream hamilton was able to ease away on route to his fourth win in five races and his third ever victory at suzuka he was on the kind of form that his guest quadruple olympic gold medal winner samo farah could empathize with completely hamilton was kept alert by the competitiveness of the red bulls in second and third while bottas was fourth raikkonen came from tenth to fifth the two force india's were next and the house team scored with both cards for only the second time in their short career hamilton's lead had now shot up to 59 points with four races to go and vettel was only 13 ahead of bottas thanks to his second dnf in three events red bull achieved a double podium for the second race in a row but lewis hamilton was now cruising at the top of the standings championship lead now is vast are you allowing yourself to think about when this could potentially be over or is it just head down keep doing what you've been doing no i think i just got to keep my head down and keep doing what i'm doing i think um you never want to get ahead of yourself to sell 100 points available so we gotta kill it still gotta win the next four races so for round 17 of the championship the crews headed west to the united states of america and the state capital of texas [Music] austin [Music] on the eve of the event plenty of team personnel gathered to support a charity run around the circuit of the americas as part of a pink themed weekend in support of breast cancer awareness four times world champion alain prost was among the runners as carlos science appeared in renault colors for the first time the fans were treated to a new razzmatazz driver introduction show which also featured f1 debutant brendan hartley among the stars of the grid receiving red carpet treatment in front of the main grandstand and the excitement was palpable daniel it's a second home for you man how much are you looking forward to this one in front of this adoring crowd i love it i love that this is uh this is cool bit of extra energy for the racer sev this is it man crunch time how do you feel going into today's race if you've got the car under you yeah it's a nice day so let's enjoy can you beat lewis have you got it yeah we'll try louis an adoring crowd the u.s audience another pop position is it going to be another win that's the plan how you guys doing we're ready and they're ready you've wanted this fight with sebastian all season long will to wield for the duration of this grand prix is that what we're gonna get i hope so all the best lewis hamilton had qualified on pole position with sebastian vettel joining him on the front row hoping to put his asian escapades behind him bottas qualified third and daniel ricardo a close fourth kimi raikkonen was fifth and with verstappen receiving power unit penalties ochon lined up in sixth place carlos sites made a strong debut with renault in seventh ahead of fellow spaniard alonso perez was ninth and massa moved into the top 10 courtesy of max's penalties former president of the united states bill clinton greeted hamilton on the grid under a beautiful texan sky max verstappen's replacement engine part saw him 16th on the grid but the man who taken a win and a second in the preceding two races wasn't going to hold back and as the current stars of f1 assembled to race a true legend of international sport was giving them the signal that we were ready to go racing as the lights went out both hamilton and vettel made pretty good getaways but vettel's proved marginally better and he squeezed in front as they crested the rise into turn one and rounded the tight left-hander behind them bottas was third from ricardo with raikkonen under attack from ocon and the frenchman eased past the ferrari as they went into the high-speed s's verstappen was in the heart of the pack but undaunted by following other cars closely and losing downforce as a result he was soon picking his way past the likes of pascal's airline in the sauber [Music] max's teammate daniel ricardo was a long way behind bottas approaching turn one but that didn't stop him having a dive on the inside to snatch third he ran wide on the exit and bottas fought back sweeping around the outside of turn two to reclaim the place both cars however were dropping away from vettel and hamilton up front indeed hamilton was now closing on the ferrari down the back straight and perhaps catching vettel by surprise he dived through on the inside to secure the lead as early as lap six [Music] sadly ricardo's grand prix was about to come to an early end engine's gone engine's gone okay understood having battled gamely for third this was a cruel blow to his side of the red bull team ferrari prepared for vettel's first pit stop on lap 16 hoping that a relatively early change of tires would give them a shot at challenging hamilton mercedes responded several laps later with lewis as they'd been protecting bottas from raikkonen and that meant vettel was right on the case as the number 44 car exited the pit lane the ferrari closed right onto the tail of the silver arrow but hamilton was immediately up to speed on his new tyres and the tiny opportunity was gone vettel would ultimately choose to stop a second time dropping to fourth place that meant that bottas and raikkonen were fighting for second and on lap 42 kimmy saw an opportunity at turn 12 and elbowed his way through bottas refused to give up without a fight but by carefully positioning the ferrari the iceman prevented any riposte and began to ease away vettel in fourth on fresh tyres was cutting through the back markers but as he passed magnussen eriksen attempted a late lunge front wheel hit rear wheels spinning the dane around and incurring a five-second penalty for ericsson all okay marcus all okay okay keep pushing keep pushing vettel was now with bottas in the race for third and both were about to lap vandoorne bottas defended his line at turn one so vettel decided to go in wide as van dorn was trying to leave them space it got a bit tight but vettel was now in third place with only his teammate between himself and hamilton unsurprisingly raikkonen offered an open door to sebastian as ferrari tried everything to reduce the consequences of yet another hamilton victory but the action now centered on verstappen from 16th he was currently battling bottas for fourth and despite being slightly over ambitious into turn 12 he completed the move cleanly a couple of corners later and continued to feed the fans frenzy in the grandstand [Applause] [Music] his pace was so good that he was now closing on third place to kimi raikkonen but this was the last lap and he was running out of time using the widest possible line in to turn 15 he used his slingshot exit to great effect and as he saw a gap on the inside he went for it and scythed past the ferrari [Applause] hamilton crossed the line to take the win get in there lewis beautiful work mate excellent drive there great job guys oh that was so much fun today thank you so much for your time appreciate it to all the fans thanks for the support yeah great work yourself lewis mercedes world champions his brother nicholas was on hand to celebrate the race win and the constructor's title for mercedes their fourth year in a row of winning the team crown a monumental achievement especially in a season of new regulations hamilton beat vettel and raikkonen after verstappen was given a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage when he went inside the ferrari bottas was fifth ock on sixth science scored points in his renault debut and kavia scored a point on his return after a two-race absence lewis now had a 66-point lead over vettel but with bottas scoring consistently all year mercedes could enjoy the fact that victory here in the usa had confirmed their constructors championship [Music] kimi raikkonen got the call to say he was now needed on the podium which caused some slight confusion as at this point max thought he'd taken third a slightly awkward moment followed as verstappen was given the news again i think there is a penalty for the second year in a row but at a different circuit he had been removed from a podium due to a driving penalty the race itself was great you know we had good pace and i was really re-enjoying myself again and i think also the last two races it showed that our car in the race is really competitive if not the fastest and uh yeah the whole weekend you know you can run off track everywhere you want so that's fine if it's like that you know it's the same for everyone so you can do your thing i basically fight with with kimi in the last lap and i go like five to ten centimeters off the track and you know i think the crowd was loving it and everything so yeah it's really weird to give me a penalty and also like that quick after a race like at least then have a talk in the stewards room and then you can always decide but it looks so bad on tv to pull someone away from the podium um again i had the same last year in mexico but they clearly don't learn from it and also for the sport you know this is killing because everybody was loving it bill clinton handed the trophy to hamilton who was now within touching distance of the driver's title after another superb weekend in the states having mastered the f1 track at indianapolis on his only visit in 2007 hamilton had now won his fifth race at austin in the six years of it being on the calendar [Music] and the crowd was buzzing as usain bolt joined him on the podium are we gonna do the you gotta teach me to do the bolt yeah let's do it all right let's do it how do we do it from austin it was a relatively short journey to the sprawling metropolis of mexico city on the eve of the day of the dead celebrations and potentially a title-deciding race for hamilton [Music] [Applause] is the most amazing feeling situated in the heart of the city the autodromo emmanos rodriguez proved a slightly tougher challenge for hamilton in qualifying than some of the previous tracks the combination of altitude and a low grip track surface didn't suit the mercedes so well [Music] [Applause] [Music] instead it was sebastian vettel clinging to his remote title hopes by his fingernails who set the fastest lap in the final part of qualifying he took his fourth pole of the season max verstappen had been fastest in q2 but when it came to the crunch he missed out on pole three different constructors were represented in the top three grid positions and a close race was in prospect vettel knew he had it all to do even if he won the race hamilton only needed to finish fifth to wrap up the title behind that top three was valtteri bottas much closer in pace to hamilton than at recent races then raikkonen was 5th and ocon lined up 6th renault claimed row 4 of the grid as the team chased toro rosso for sixth in the constructors then local hero perez lined up ninth ahead of massa [Music] mercedes were on the brink of a fourth successive drivers title but only if the race went to plan and ferrari had the advantage of track position from the start the atmosphere was electric as the countdown continued and off the line vettel made a good start from pole which enabled him to sweep in front of verstappen but it's a long way to turn one in mexico and max used the slipstream to come back at the ferrari and then dive in deep to the outside and run wheel to wheel with battle in the first two corners contact was made hamilton swept around the outside but then another hit as vettel's front wing speared into hamilton's tyre and caused an immediate puncture bottas took advantage to move into second flight copy copy lewis so box box at box box hamilton had a long way to go to the pits and wasn't happy did he hit me deliberately not sure lewis vettel made it to the pits first requiring a replacement front wing a procedure much practiced by the mechanics but rarely under such intense pressure a title could be won or lost here today vettel still needed to finish second to prevent hamilton becoming champion even if lewis failed to finish and having brought his car to the pits in one piece the mercedes driver was not about to give up fresh tires and a new front wing brought the car back into full health meanwhile daniel ricardo wasn't enjoying much luck in the americas having retired in austin it's an issue i think with the turbo i think it's drained all the battery okay down boxes like please box this lap you're doing a very good job mate that was a good first few laps sorry about that vettel's charge from the back was not made any easier by felipe massa fighting hard for 15th place on lap 12 but the german asserted his authority seriously are we developing outer scooter here sort of it's fun to push the other guy off the track i have my nose ahead stay positive i am focused don't worry on lap 19 the crowd rose as one in support of all those affected by the earthquake that had hit the city on the 19th of september fuetza mexico resounded through the park lewis hamilton's recovery was proving difficult as he was stuck at the back of the field it's crazy to be fighting for this position you smilers let me go and follow me race leader verstappen was now about to lap him and hamilton dutifully let him through at the earliest opportunity the loudest cheers were saved for sergio perez however particularly when he found a way past the house of kevin magnussen and further bolstered his chances of scoring useful points he couldn't prevent vettel coming through though and by lap 51 the ferrari had recovered to sixth position [Music] sergio's dad was a little disappointed hamilton was now 11th and one place away from the points he lined up felipe massa on the main start finished rate and although the brazilian was no pushover the mercedes had superior speed and moved into 10th [Music] vettel still needed to finish either first or second and on lap 57 he moved into fourth by overtaking esteban ocon he hadn't given up but his task was pretty daunting considering the gap to third-placed kimi 23 raikkonen how many seconds you said [Music] 23. it's a little bit too much the laps were ticking by the anxiety was obvious in both main camps but out on track the drivers were giving it their all hamilton was now attacking alonso for ninth it was hard racing between two of the very best wheel-to-wheel combatants and despite the lack of honda horsepower alonso had a very stable chassis on brakes and in cornering hamilton muscled his way past in the end and his fans drew a sigh of relief especially his mum watching from the mercedes garage untroubled by all of this max verstappen had driven a perfect race even while being held back by the team to safeguard reliability and the dutchman came through the stadium for the final time to record his second win in four grand prix well max that was fantastic fantastic brilliant brilliant drive couldn't you uh go any slower still hasn't finished yet yeah i'm so sorry mate i was cruising after the blow of losing the podium in austin this was the perfect response from verstappen and the red bull team [Music] sebastian vettel had driven his heart out and acknowledged the fans on the final lap but he knew that fourth place simply wasn't good enough today of all days because lewis hamilton stuck as he was in ninth place behind the house of kevin magnussen was still going to finish the race with an unassailable lead in the points [Music] it might not have come the way he'd wanted it but hamilton was the 2017 world champion getting there lewis champion of the world i'd like to say a big thanks to everyone in this team what you've done the past couple years is just remarkable and i'm just so grateful for your hard work this year god bless you the relief was obvious the celebrations could begin and hamilton could enjoy his title success in one of the finest auditoriums on the entire f1 calendar bottas finished second for his first podium since singapore and raikkonen was third behind ocon stroll secured valuable points for williams perez was seventh but magnuson's eighth place kept hass close to renault in the constructive standings while alonso took the final point hamilton was 66 points clear with only 50 available at the last two races and that meant he was a four times world champion and the most successful british driver the sport has ever seen [Music] max could not be denied his podium on this occasion and his smile said it all but raising the union flag on top of his mercedes race car hamilton could finally believe he had achieved his goal well i just want to say a big thank you to everyone that came out to support us i think i hope we gave him a good race today the mexican fans are the best i think i've seen around the world honestly you don't get to see this everywhere so you know we've got great fans around the world but this is you guys really create this atmosphere so big thank you man i did everything i could had a good start and uh i i don't really know what happened at turn three but i gave him plenty of room but i tried as hard as i come back and i'm just a big thank you to my family to my team mercedes have been incredible for the last five years and i'm so proud to be a part of it you said four's your magic number does that mean there's not a number five actually forty four's my bad number but i'm gonna be here a long time to get 44 championships i will continue to race while i love it i've really as i said i've enjoyed it this year more than ever i can't come back to form one so there's going to be a point in which okay i've had enough i've i've already been blessed and had such a wonderful time here in these 10 years hopefully i have my place here and um i'm gonna continue to whilst i'm at my best continue to try and and i want to go out on the top so that's my goal obviously each year could do the easy thing like obviously nico did which is just stop and retreat with uh with these four wins these four titles but i think there's more of me i think there's there's more to come there's more more of a challenge there's harder times ahead and i like that i love that that's challenging and be bored so boring without it receiving the plaudits from his greatest competitors hamilton was bouncing to be with his team the people who had contributed so much to his championship success with his mom in the front row and determined not to be left out of anything hamilton could enjoy the moment and soak up the spirit of success [Applause] god [Applause] the icing on the cake he now had one more title the mercedes non-executive chairman nikki louder can we just get a few words from you on the achievement of lewis hamilton this afternoon now a four-time world champion i think it's it's uh basically you don't care right no i don't can we can we be happy about it i don't know i don't think we answer i think we all in a way yes but uh i think we prefer to be in that position right yeah yeah i think we kind of can be happy for him but in inside you know you know sao paulo hosted the penultimate race and brazilian driver felipe massa had announced his retirement from f1 for the second year in a row here we are again and once again we know that this is a swan song you mean it this time yeah actually yeah is my second retired race in brazil so uh but this time is the last one for sure in the in formula one so definitely really looking forward for another amazing feeling to race at home and really hope we can have a nice race and a nice result to finish well qualifying saw one of the biggest shocks of the season just give us a message here okay let's see yeah i'm okay guys apologies man with lewis out in q1 the battle for pole was contested between sebastian vettel looking to back up his pole position from mexico and the remaining mercedes of valtteri bottas who'd set the pace in final practice and it was bottas who delivered the best lap by just 38 thousandths of a second [Applause] his third pole of the season saw repeat of the austria front row with vettel alongside while raikkonen was third and max verstappen fourth in the red bull which wasn't showing the same pace as at recent events perez inherited fifth due to power unit penalties for ricardo and alonso was sixth once again the renaults were closely matched although science and ninth-placed mata had tripped over each other in qualifying and ocon lined up in 10th the mercedes team made numerous changes to hamilton's car including a new power unit and that meant a pit lane start initially bottas launched well but then picked up some wheel spin which allowed vettel to draw alongside and as they went into the cena s the ferrari squeezed through to grab the initiative raikkonen was third then verstappen and alonso but further back ricardo was attempting to make up positions until it all went wrong on the exit of turn two the opening laps all the ferrari's sandwiching bottas followed by a red bull and a mclaren and then a padder between two frenchmen and ocon had made contact i'm not sure i can drive back [Applause] the safety car was deployed which offered the opportunity to review the incident at turns one and two van d'orn found himself squeezed between ricardo on the outside and a charging magnuson on the inside you know we got bunched up we were in you know the middle of a sandwich and unfortunately there was there was nowhere to go so uh yeah we we had contact and that was the end of our race daniel ricardo was able to rejoin okay any damage question uh not sure i'll keep going [Music] as the race restarted vettel pulled away from bottas but further back felipe massa identified this as a crucial opportunity to pass alonso using the extra power of the mercedes unit in the williams he shut the door on his former teammate and was now running sixth hamilton was soon on the warpath closing in on brendan hartley in the toro rosso and overtaking at the same location as his qualifying mishap had occurred that put him right behind lance stroll observed by the veteran of 326 grand prix rubens barrichello ricardo was also making up for lost ground catching and passing strolls williams on lap 11 with one of his trademark maneuvers the pit stops were a chance for mercedes to fight back and bottas stopped first followed by vettel one lap later out on track valtteri was at his maximum on new tyres but as vettel exited the pit lane he had maintained just enough of a margin over the mercedes to hold the advantage as the race progressed hamilton climbed to fifth place and was now dicing with verstappen for fourth running on different tyre strategies at this stage there was little that max could do to prevent the world champion coming past and hamilton could now go in search of raikkonen in third [Applause] lance stroll had flat spotted his tire earlier and it was about to get worse something's on the tire he would finish 16th but vettel secured the victory his fifth win of the season chased by bottas while raikkonen fended off hamilton to the flag it was a welcome result for the beleaguered ferrari team [Applause] back in the pack three cars were arguing over seventh place with masa alonso and perez separated by just a few car lengths the brazilian was not to be denied on home turf bringing his williams across the line as best of the rest after the ferraris mercedes and red bulls had been the last ferrari driver to win in brazil until today there were some poignant moments all around daddy i'm so proud of you and where wherever you go i will support you i love you by the way i love your start bye [Applause] thank you i love you all thank you so much i love all of you guys vettel's first win since hungary saw him ahead of bottas and raikkonen while hamilton's charge from the pits culminated in fourth ricardo recovered to sixth alonso scored four points to move ahead of his teammate in the standings and hulkenberg scored for the first time since belgium vettel had further increased the gap to bottas for second overall but raikkonen was now within seven points of ricardo while ocon failed to score following his first ever retirement from an f1 gp [Music] the top three celebrated with ferrari at last able to enjoy a top result which included a third consecutive podium for raikkonen but the fans were clamoring to see their home-grown star the man who had come so close to being world champion in 2008 yet had maintained his dignity and integrity throughout his long career was the man of the moment in sao paulo [Applause] [Music] the final race of the season brought the teams to the yas marina circuit in abu dhabi and a chance to reflect on everything that had occurred over the previous nine months i think it's been a fun year obviously you know when you're racing that close then with hardly any mistakes i think it's fair to say also that this year louis prai pedo has probably made less mistakes so um in the end he was just a better man and deserved to win you know to be fighting a full-time world champion from your respect and you expect nothing but the best from them and no mistakes so when you have races like spa where it's really down to one of you making the smallest mistakes and none of us did i'm looking forward to many more of those races hopefully in the future great so we all daniel what's your personal best overtake of the year it wasn't isn't it ah too many to choose from kimi in monza in term one that was that was from downtown so that was pretty fun i i admit i have a very bad memory so i i don't remember much past uh not much before before austin have to pass that many people this year i passed you a couple of times so that was enough so those are those are the most exciting ones the weekend also witnessed the final of effluent's first official esports series which saw some of the world's best gamers pitched head to head under the eye of the formula one establishment so there are millions and millions of people playing every day and i think it's the right opportunity if we put everything in place to to make this a huge thing so it's what we are looking for the first champion was 18 year old brendan lee valtteri bottas earned pole position for the second race in a row beating hamilton in a straight fighting qualifying sebastian vettel was half a second off pole in third while daniel ricardo outqualified the second ferrari to start fourth reichen and therefore lined up fifth while verstappen was an out of sorts sixth hulkenberg was seventh as renault bore down on toro rosso's four point lead in the constructors championship perez was eighth followed by teammate okon in ninth and soon to be retired felipe massa in 10th and the brazilian was receiving lots of love before stepping into the cockpit for the final time an etihad airways a380 was accompanied by the uae's air display team first and al emirat in the build-up to the ninth running of the abu dhabi grand prix on the yas marina circuit on the left of shot valtteri bottas was determined to make up for his disappointing start in brazil this time he judged it right and maintained an advantage on the run towards turn one allowing him to remain ahead of hamilton while vettel locked up briefly in third and ricardo held on to fourth in the background magnuson went wide and as the cars surged through turns two and three he rejoined alongside lance stroll only to lose control spin in front of the pack and thankfully end up pointing the right way with no damage bottas had made a small break already but at the hairpin max verstappen was trying to squeeze inside his regular foe kimi raikkonen there was no way through this time he settled back into sixth while fernando alonso chased dock on but the battle for seventh place was hotting up between perez and hulkenberg and into turn 11 perez defended the inside hulkenberg tried the outside ran beyond the track limits but stayed ahead he needs to give back the position man we need to give back the position understood yet jolie is aware understood there was a certain amount of glee in the renault garage but a five-second penalty was heading nico's way further back roman grosjo and lance stroll was scrapping over 13th position grosjo had snuck ahead stroll slipstreamed his way back past but then the frenchman swept around the outside of turn 11 to take the position from the canadian stroll would endure a tough race to eventually finish 18th daniel ricardo's car didn't sound good we've got a hydraulic problem we're gonna go mode one and switch off mate sorry about that yeah again just uh reliability you know nothing nothing i could have done better so or nothing i could have done to prevent it um yeah pretty pretty bitter way to end the season to be honest so sure we had some highs but we we finished uh in a bit of a trench as ricardo stepped away race leader valtteri bottas was heading for the pits the first of the two mercedes to go for new tyres three laps later lewis hamilton came in having stretched his car to the absolute limit in an attempt to make up the time on his teammate it was going to be pretty close but as bottas swept through turn two on track hamilton was only just exiting the pit exit tunnel and that meant the finn had maintained his advantage during one of the most crucial stages of the race bottas was in command and in the mercedes garage toto wolff had an overview on the rivalry between the two camps by lap 30 hamilton was the closest he'd been and bottas could see his own mirrors filling up with flashes of silver body work but there was no hint of an error from the race leader while on the other hand hamilton's determination to find a way past led him to try just a little bit too hard [Music] he kept the car under control but couldn't break down his colleagues defenses and bottas was delivering a rock-solid performance under the watchful eye of his wife emilia carlos science was on target to score points when he pitted on lap 32 [Music] unfortunately the left front tire was not attached securely and it was already wobbling as he headed into the tunnel he just missed the barrier as he plunged beneath the track but he was clearly in trouble yeah one tire is not on one tire stop the car please the president of renault sport racing jerome stoll couldn't believe it as the chequered flag was being prepared bottas had eased away from hamilton and after a race of intense pressure he could now enjoy the cruise to the line for his third win of the year brilliant absolutely brilliant so well managed very well done battery yes emilia and valtteri's trainer auntie viarula were clearly delighted following the victory and celebrated with more of the family while the mercedes management celebrated the team's fourth one-two finish of the year and renault had snatched sixth in the constructors that's it nico fantastic thank you guys good job thank you for your power superbly judged no worries it's what i'm here for felipe massa left his mark on the track and fernando alonso had his own reasons to join in the fun i did some donuts practice for next year spectators reveled in watching the final antics of a new generation of cars that had suddenly become historical artifacts ready to be pensioned off to reappear in displays and museums around the world as the final podium celebration got underway valtteri bottas was congratulated by the man whose seat he had inherited at the start of the year nico rosberg applauded a flawless victory valkyrie you're quite reserved in showing your emotions but we we saw some clips of your family and the pits as you were coming across the line the feeling you have right now this sets you up for a great winter ahead of next season you know we think we don't maybe show emotion but it doesn't feel like it doesn't mean that we don't have any you know i'm so happy um you know there's been so much support from from my family and everyone so yeah i can't show it too much but i i feel good bottas took the 12th win for mercedes in 2017 leading home the two quadruple world champions who had battled throughout so much of the year raikkonen fended off verstappen to the end hulkenberg finished a vital sixth the two force india scored yet again while alonso beat masa this time as they finished 9th and 10th hamilton's winning margin was 46 points but vettel held on to second despite bottas taking the win reichenan passed ricardo into fourth place as a result of the australian's non-finish mercedes won the constructors championship for a fourth consecutive season beating ferrari and red bull force india were fourth with more than double the points of williams but renault moved into sixth at the last cast pushing toro rosso into seventh with hass mclaren and sauber completing the order [Music] and while the final race went to bottas the season belonged to hamilton you know when i was five years old when i started watching formula one and i always look back to you know my favorite movie was cool runnings and um when they arrived at the top of the hill for the first time in the rusty old bobsled that's exactly how me and my dad arrived at the go-kart track back then i had no never even comprehended that people would be following me you know as a kid that you just dream of racing you don't think of all the other things that come with it traveling seeing great things having money to do things that you just never even think of that as people at the airport or at the race just sending you positive energy just happy excited just bubbling that crosses over to me i take that in and that that lifts me up but that really is i can't explain to you how grateful i am for that you know i'm here for my fourth world title it's very very hard to believe that it's happened i was always grateful after my first and then the second came and then the third came and and then this sheer will how i still had this will and willpower to continue after you know a lot of the success we've had i felt even a more a bigger burning desire this year to to win the championship particularly as we find another team and i had a difficult year last year so i was i was adamant i was gonna better myself mentally physically and with my attitude and how i worked with everyone so that i could put myself in the position i'm in today but to my fans my core fans that travel around the world i really do appreciate and and i love them for it and we win and we lose together i really mean that because i don't do this on my own there's this team behind me and then there's team lh uh fan base who that energy that uplift me pushes the set the wind in my cells is coming from those guys so a big thank you to everyone [Applause] [Music] in 2017 lewis hamilton became the most successful british driver the sport has ever seen his career total of grand prix victories climbed to 62 and he became the all-time record holder of pole positions ahead of ayet and senna and michael schumacher at the wheel of his mercedes he took on the fight from a resurgent ferrari team and emerged on top to become only the fifth driver in the history of f1 to become a four times world champion [Music] [Applause] you
