Ezra Visits Torres Strait Islands

[Applause] gets his first NRL try I guess every time I run out of the field I'm representing not only myself and my family but everyone up in the toe straight so and and on Mainland so all the business peoples [Applause] [Music] this time last year no no one really knew me feel like Glory run up and visit my whole life you know just growing up there and I guess coming back here is um you know one way I can reconnect and learn more about myself and my roots back up here and you know get away from footy to see the life and learn learn myself [Music] here at uh Sacred Heart um TI here it's about to run a few clinics for the kids should be good at a primary school let's just get into it but then you go outside top of the morning Ezra hey everyone what did you say back to them top of the morning kids [Music] [Music] if I think back to what I was like when I was their age it wasn't that long ago but um you know when I send my role models or like certain you know style whatever it was even even an uncle or I looked up to whoever you look up to you just you put a big smile on your face you drop the two hands two hands buddy I guess you know coming here and getting as big of a reaction that I got um it actually surprised me you came into the academy as a young young boy and you know he's progressed all the way through the system um to finally achieve his dream there this year and play first grade the kids just you know idolize him you know and I think in some small way the kids really seem as you know a bit of a beacon of what they can achieve themselves one day if they're willing to work hard and you know and have the right attitude [Music] make yourself an island I'm like whoa some mornings I had to go train before school you know after school and you know on the weekends so it's not just time that I have friends you got to make time and like if you want to go to a birthday party like you know sometimes you might have to say no I've got a trains you know it was all worth it in the end to you know play for the Broncos hello guys we're here at Tagai primary uh third class of the day so uh let's go [Music] they're not all going to be sporting stars but you know in some small way if they can you know achieve you know a really high level of success for themselves in whatever they choose and if some of those messages are learned by guys like Ezra people like Ezra and those messages have livid so the first thing I need you to do is just get a partner so make sure in a group of two then that's just a fantastic thing that we've done for the region yeah all right I wasn't the best listener just you know little thing but I guess if I listen more I'd be nice but I think the main thing that we try to tell the kids here um is to just you know listen and just get the best effort and I just you know have a dig so [Music] when I was growing up I seen a lot of kids with Talent a lot of cousins with Talent decision yeah we just went twice what I do know is every single person sitting here today is n't it but it's better than someone else I think for myself as if I can do my best and try and keep as as many people on the right track um you know who knows who knows what will happen we might see more indigenous players up in the NRL so I don't know what's here a couple other family members there my family's that big so we've got family everywhere in Brisbane up here and I hope all of them can just you know choose the choose the right option you know might be able to fill the whole team of family there's the radio station having a look there a little tap he's a bit of a household name here now um and you know I think it's just fantastic that whilst he was born in the city he's got a huge connection to his culture and you know his mum lives up here and um I know it means a lot to him and so you know and you can just see that in the interactions he's had with the community that's just basically an Islander business people just everyone just takes each other in so once you meet them you'll obviously just fine it's great to have you here at 4mw this afternoon and welcome back to Torres Strait hello Ezra um how are you doing this afternoon yeah pretty good um did a couple of stuff today with the with the community so happy to be back up here and um you know work with the family [Music] she's been my number one supporter over this journey so um yeah full credit to my family and can't thank them enough I guess when I go back over to Mom and and have a good chat with her um that's when um I'll start to really think about the last year so yeah you need like you look like you need a bit of beefing up [Music] my two grandparents are also just you know played a big part of my life raised all of us under the one roof and got both of them touted on each their face had on an edge pack so I'll always know up in my head that you know they'll be supporting me along the way you know it's not all about rugby league and we have to make sure that we we're honest with the with the kids that we work with that you know professional sport is really difficult to achieve um you can do it and Ezra is a glowing example of a young boy that's done it have you had any times in the last few years we've all just too huh yeah a couple times a day um you know covered come um I couldn't play any rap footy so one covered was finished I had to get surgery on my my shoulder miss out on a couple of teams so yeah that sort of set me back a bit no just put me into a little place [Music] yeah Mentos yeah a big thing and I think that's a reason why I'd like to also get into that sort of space with kids I wasn't the best student in school but you know lucky I listened for some bits and I'm I'm still at school now so I'm I'm back at Tafe on diploma youth work it's going to take me two years to do so yeah you know always willing to learn you know like growing up I had a couple of people reach out to me to talk about and yeah that's why I'm sort of strong for all of that and it'd be big up here um everyone up here that's you know going through something even on Mainland just to reach home too so it's good to hear lots of smiles around I hope I made a big difference in them [Music] [Applause]
