ezekiel bread ever heard of it wanna know how it's made well in this video i'm gonna be walking you through the process of me making ezekiel bread for the very first time and i'm also probably gonna be bursting your bubble a bit because we're gonna be also talking about what the real ezekiel bread actually was in the bible and yes we probably have been duped a little bit by some very clever marketing so stay tuned [Music] hey everyone welcome back to grains and grit my name is felicia and if you're new here welcome it's wonderful to have you on this channel i unlock the secrets to biblical healthy whole grains specifically using freshly milled wheat true whole grains and more today we're going to be talking about ezekiel bread and go ahead and give you a heads up you may see a few outfit changes because i have been making this over a few days so just bear with me on that you're not losing your mind today i'm actually going to walk you through me making ezekiel bread for the very first time now this is a recipe from sue becker's of the bread becker's cookbook the red cookbook that i've had ever since i started melamon wheat it's one that she has in there for ezekiel fasting bread as she calls it most of you are probably more familiar with the ezekiel 49 bread that you buy in the store that is made by company food for life and we will talk about that later so in this video i'm going to walk you through me making ezekiel bread for the first time um i have some a little bit of goofs along the way and i'll show you and give you pointers on how i'm going to be avoiding those in the future say even me i've been milling my own weed making bread for a decade and i will still make mistakes so don't worry it's okay and you can recover from them so first of all i'm going to walk you through actually making the recipe that i have and then we're going to be talking about what the bible actually talk says regarding the bread that ezekiel ate the prophet ezekiel 8 and let me tell y'all it's going to blow your mind it's going to be completely different than you're aware of ezekiel bread being so first off before we get started with the recipe just real quick about this ezekiel bread why people um have a fascination with it and everything is because of um we're being told of the nutrient value of it as i've stated in other videos that when you combine wheat with beans combine them both and it creates a complete protein so the bread that we are going to be making and even the ecobread in the store that you buy is a complete protein so it contains all of the essential amino acids needed for life so it actually is a very healthy bread of course i always say mill it yourself the ones in the store actually sprout your grains and again we'll talk about all that later on what i think about that and what the bible says about it as always be sure to check the description box below i will have a printable recipe for you i'll link the breadbacker's cookbook and i where i buy my grains is generally azure standard and all the grains and beans and things listed in this recipe i will be listing for you below so check that box out and also while you're there be sure to sign up for my newsletter to get your free grains calculator to know how much grain that you actually consume and need to purchase if you're wanting to stock up on it and while you're there if you like ezekiel bread and baking bread in general hit give this video a thumbs up be sure to be sure to subscribe i post videos every week and be sure to follow me on instagram because the reason why we're doing this video is i shared a photo on instagram about me making ezekiel brit and i had a huge response about it so i actually switched my scheduling around to do this video for y'all so you can follow me on instagram at grains and grit and now let's get started with the recipe and then we'll talk about what the bible actually says about ezekiel bread all right so if this looks familiar it's because it's pretty much the exact same picture that i shared on instagram just the other day and this i have here all the different types of dry ingredients that we are going to be milling to make ezekiel bread and again we'll be getting into later while this bread is rising why these ingredients are used but we first have you can barely see it here two and a half cups of hard red wheat we then have under here one and a half cups of it calls for either spelt or rye i have used spelt um traditionally or biblically speaking spelt is the one that is mentioned in the bible but you can use rye if you do not have that we also have half a cup of barley it needs to be hold barley a quarter cup of millet a quarter cup of lentils we're now getting into the beans now she says greener preferred i don't have those i'm just using brown which is going to be fine then we have two tablespoons of great northern beans two tablespoons of red kidney beans and two tablespoons of pinto beans again all dried ingredients all of these ingredients you put in a bowl and then we're mixing them all up and then we're literally just gonna dump all this right into my grain mill and it's going to mill it all up and get it all nice into one type of flour that's so pretty look at that all right so let's take this over to our grain mill all right so here we are at my grain mill in case you want to know i use a wonder mill i know it says whisper mill but i got this off ebay it's a refurbished wonder mill and i love it it's been going strong for 10 years and again i'll be listing all of the ingredients the printable recipe any equipment that i use will be in the description box below so be sure to check that let's turn this on and mill all this up all right and there we have the flour and incredibly enough it doesn't really look different it is flour that's all that that is there so now we just take this and we're going to add in our other ingredients to make our dough y'all so here i am at my bosch universal mixer miss betsy bosch love her if you've been here long enough you know absolutely love her okay so now we're going to add the rest of her the ingredients to our ezekiel bread now we'll get into this later but all the bible mentions are the grains and beans that were used beyond this we are obviously having to kind of make a general assumption about the ingredients added to make bread so with that being said her sue becker's recipe now calls for two tablespoons of yeast now i am going to be using instant yeast to make it go a little bit faster you can use active dry yeast as well bonus points definitely try doing this with a sourdough starter i have yet to try that but if you have comment below and let me know how it turned out so we have our yeast and i like to add our yeast first and then we're going to add four cups of just lukewarm water again yeast does not like super super hot water but it does best in like a warm warm water and then we have half a cup of oil and a quarter cup of honey and if you know my trick i measure them together because they take up the same amount of space and it's great because that oil helps that honey to slide right out so again again for everything printable recipe will be down below in the description box so that's half a cup of oil one cup of honey and then now we're going to add our salt i like to add that last yeast and salt typically do not like each other so we're going to add the salt now now if you want to and i may try this later because if you've watched my normal low fee spread video i do usually like to proof my yeast i'm actually not going to do that for this recipe i don't think it is necessarily quite needed exactly because according to the instructions this is not going to be your typical dough like a ball of dough it's going to be more of a wet dough so i think it's okay to go ahead and not proof my yeast i know that it's good i've used it recently but if you're not sure if your yeast is good definitely want to proof your yeast first which is just adding the yeast the water and maybe a couple cups of your flour mix it together leave it for about 15-20 minutes make sure it's all nice and bubbly and then add the rest of your ingredients very simple so we have all this in and now we're just going to add our flour and we just need to dump in exactly what we milled because her measurements is what we need so we're going to dump all that in now you can do this by hand if you like just you're going to need a big bowl because this is roughly about 9 cups of flour which is pretty big this is actually going to make two loaves of ezekiel bread and so you can see it's filling my mixer pretty well this is a large capacity mixer so if you're using a smaller mixer you may need to divide this i'm not sure but in the bosch i know that she can definitely handle that give you a good reference if you tried my yeast red videos the amount of flour that i have going into my two two pound loaves is roughly about this much so if you already can't do all that in your stand mixer just know go ahead and divide it up and let's mix all this together so as you can see this is mixing in the instructions now say to knead it for about 10 minutes so i'm gonna do probably nine in my bosch if you were doing this by hand probably the same amount of time maybe even a bit longer again this is the first time i'm doing this but i do know in the instructions she says that it's going to be a wet dough so do not add more flour in to expecting to form that ball of dough because it's not going to happen this is more of a batter type recipe so don't freak out um so i'm going to set my timer and we're going to need this for about i'm going to do i'll go ahead and yeah i'll go ahead and do 10 minutes like she says 10 minutes in my mixer and i will see you back here in 10 minutes all right so 10 minutes is up and as you can see this has turned out to be a much smoother looking dough a little bit smoother but you can see it is quite runny it is like a batter dough not our ball so let's take this over there and put these in some loaf pans all right so now all that's left is to pour them into our pans now um sue becker says and i can already tell from the nine cups of flowers these are going to be large loaves so you're going to want a large loaf pan again like my yeast bread recipe you need one that's roughly for about two pounds of bread not your one pound loaves but you can use those if you only have the one pound you'll probably need about three of them you can also do this in two nine by 13 pans as well so if you want that'll of course have it to be a bit smaller shorter but we're going to use my loaf pans well greased and we're going to divide this up as best as possible we're going to have to eyeball it [Music] okay so i will say coming out it is like an exact in between of a bread dough and a batter like a muffin batter because it kind of just wants to stay together but yet you know still runny but that's what the instructions say so we're gonna go with it it does smell good i have to say i can already smell smell it and it smells it does smell good all right now we get the lovely task of eyeballing it if you are a perfectionist or really want to make sure that everything's good you can weigh these you know get them where they're about the right measurement if i was to sell these i would weigh them but i'm not selling these two loaves this is for us now one thing while i'm doing this to mention that this ezekiel flour mix is actually quite versatile so if you just start at the beginning where we just ground everything up into flour and now you have a flour and you can use that flower for things like muffins pancakes i saw several comments of my um on instagram saying y'all have used this in pancakes and muffins and then it was delicious so that will definitely be my next thing i want to try is just grinding up the flour and using it in muffins or pancakes okay it's just a weird dough because look at it it kind of i mean it wants to stretch that was the beauty of the kneading if you did notice before kneading it was a very rough looking dough and now it is definitely smoother and it still you can see it's got the elastic to it but definitely not enough where i would roll this out on the counter and need you that would be a mess you do not want to do that okay so eyeballing it this is good and now we're going to put this in a warm place and these are going to rise and you want it and it's very important she says to not over rise otherwise it could spill out so you're going to rise it until it's about a quarter of an inch above the pan which is if you're a seamstress or especially quilter you know exactly what a quarter of an inch looks like it's not that much i mean we're talking maybe like that much above the pan so we're going to cover these up i'm going to put them in a warm spot and i'll see you back here whenever they have risen and see how long it takes to rise she says about an hour so we're going to see how long it takes for us now while these rise we're going to talk about exactly what ezekiel bread is why do we even have it why is it a thing do we need to sprout it where does it come from all the things so let's get these rising switch this camera around and we'll have that discussion all right this is actually the next day and slight change in outfit i actually recorded this yesterday when i was baking the bread but funny story um i was talking to my husband about the video doing ezekiel bread and you know what the bible says about it and usually i actually consult my husband when it comes to bible things for some reason i i didn't this time and he came to me today and said do you actually know the real ezekiel bread what that was in the bible and what it signified and he told me y'all and mind blown so credit goes to my husband for this i was really just gonna do more of a superficial of what the bible says about ezekiel bread we are going to really dive in and see what the bible actually says about this ezekiel bread so a little back story if you are not familiar with the with ezekiel it is a book in the bible and ezekiel was a prophet to israel and old testament times and he was asked to do a lot of crazy things like besides ezekiel bread you may also heard ezekiel when you um people refer to because he had the vision of a wheel within a wheel so that's how you've heard of ezekiel and you are going to want your bible for this because we're going to talk about what the bible actually says about ezekiel bread y'all and it's going to blow your mind so we're going to turn to ezekiel so in your bible isaiah jeremiah lamentation ezekiel so you're going to want to turn to ezekiel chapter four and let's really read what ezekiel bread now before we do that actually um ezekiel we are going to i do want to touch on what the ezekiel bread is in the store and that is made by company food for life they sprout their grains and they also do different recipes than i have done for the beans they use soy beans they don't use the type of beans that that i've used in my recipe but they do use wheat barley millet spelt and soy beans as their bean and they do actually sprout their grains and they do have different varieties of easy heel bread so that's the bread that you buy in the store that's named ezekiel 4 9 and that's where they get it from from ezekiel 4 9. so let's just read that verse ezekiel 4 9 says and i'm reading in the king james take thou talk god talking to ezekiel take there also into the wheat and barley and beans and lentils and millet and fishes and put them in one vessel and make the bread thereof according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy side 390 days shalt thou eat thereof so he was told by god to lie on his side for this whole time and while he's lying on his side he's going to consume these grains so that's where they get it from that's ezekiel 49 as you can see it says nothing about sprouting nothing about oil or yeast or loaf or anything like that so that's the basis of where we figure out what grains to include do you know when it says fitches that the king james translators did put in their notes that that is spelt so that's where we get spelled but let's actually read on to see what this bread really was again gonna blow your mind so we're gonna continue from verse nine verse ten so we're talking about this bread and thy meat talking about the bread which thou shalt eat shall be by weight twenty shekels a day from time to day time shalt thou eat it thou shalt drink also water by measure the sixth part of a hen from time to time shalt thou drink and thou shall eat it as barley cakes and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man in their sight keep reading and the lord said even thus shall the children of israel eat their defiled bread among the gentiles whether i will drive them and then verse 14 ezekiel says oh please lord um he says behold my soul hath not been polluted for from my youth up till now have i not eaten of that which dieth of itself or is torn in pieces neither came their abominable flesh into my mouth if you are aware of this we do have the levitical law that god told the israelites where they could eat certain things and other meats were unclean so that's where that's coming from okay verse 15 god had some mercy on ezekiel he said then he god said unto me ezekiel lo i have given thee cows dung for man's dong and thou shalt prepare thy bread therewith keep reading verse 16 moreover he said unto me son of man behold i will break the staff of bread in jerusalem and they shall eat bread by weight and with care and they shall drink water by measure and with astonishment that they may want bread and water and be astonished one with another and consume a way for their iniquity boom that's what the bible actually says about ezekiel bread oh kind of gross actually so we're now going to read and now that's that's amazing on its own so first of all from scripture that we can see that he takes these grains put it in a pot and he's going to cook it first of all as barley cakes now we can know and assume from other references to cakes in the bible it's not your nice little pretty birthday cake um cakes just usually mean a type of unleavened bread so kind of like think we call johnny cakes so it's a batter you know and you fry it in a pan so generally i think it's generally something like that bottom line is definitely an unleavened bread there's no mention of yeast of any kind so it's to be cooked like barley cakes and it was to be cooked in cow's dung cow manure sounds delightful if you're wondering how that's done just know in case you don't know that whenever you put manure together it actually gets very hot and so maybe he had some sort of dutch oven like actually putting it into the dung or maybe cooks it on top regardless i'm praying that he actually had a pan to cook it on and not have to actually put it but um either way not over fire it was cooked over in cow manure doesn't that sound delightful as just simple barley cakes and this was to be and the purpose of this because everything ezekiel did was prophecy a kind of a visual metaphor prophecy of what was about to happen to israel and in this case he was prophesying that they're going to be taken into captivity that they're going to be on starvation rations um they're going to want bread this is going to be meager beggar's food that's what ezekiel bread was they're going to be rationing and if you also notice that his water was also rationed as well as his bread so this was starvation rations and he ate this for 390 days he wasn't thriving he was lying on his side eating only about um we'll get into how much this actually is but a rational amount of that and water a day now let's look at what some commentaries actually say because they're able to get a little bit more light onto this again i'm a huge proponent of just using scripture but many times we can glean a little bit more of like especially the history with commentaries so we're actually going to read from matthew henry's commentary because the commentaries that we read he seemed to go into most detail so here's what he says about the ezekiel the bread that ezekiel was going to eat so again matthew henry commentary you can find his commentary online i will also link his entire commentary in books below um he says his meat talking about ezekiel's and meat the bread that he was eating for the quality of it was to be of the worst bread made of but little wheat and barley and the rest of beans and lentils and millet and fishes such as we feed horses or fatted hogs with and this mixed as milkhorn or as that in the beggar's bag that has a dish full of one sort of corn at one house and of another at another's house so the beggar's bag was actually known where beggars would take a bag go from house to house and the house would just scrape out the bottom parts of whatever they've milled that day into the beggar's bread or into the beggar's bag it was coarse it was not fine and it was just a mixture of things it was beggars bread it was not what they wanted to be served at the table and they certainly they saw things like um the spelt and things like that to be horse feed or hog feed um so they they it wasn't the finest of grains to to consume continue on with matthew henry of such corn as this must the prophet's bread be made while he underwent the fatigue of lying on a side and needed something better to support him um he also goes on to say for the quantity of it so again the bible actually says it's he was to eat it by weight 20 shekels a day well if you're like me you have no idea how much that actually weighs well matthew henry commentates on it for the quantity of it it was to be of the least that a man could be kept alive with to signify that the besieged should be reduced to short allowance and should hold out till all the bread and the city was spent and the prophet must eat but 20 shekels weight of bread a day and that was about he says 10 ounces so 16 ounces is a pound eight ounces is half a pound so a little over half a pound of bread of this bread that he was to eat that's what he got a day and to give you an idea that's kind of like maybe two slices of regular bread that's it a day and then his water was rationed as well his water he states was um half a pint about eight ounces so eight ounces is a cup and that's what he had for every day half about a pint of water and um or a pint or a half sorry a half a pint of water so eight ounces and about two slices of our mentality of bread very coarse spread it was a coarse meal um it was not it was just a bear's food he probably just mixed it with some water to make it a little bit of a batter maybe he put it on you know something to fry it on his barley cakes however they made barley cakes that is how roughly how they consumed it no oil no yeast no honey no salt just coarse ground animal feed as they saw it and little of their fine bread as they saw it find wheat and again all of this was to signify scarcity that was about to come as judgment to israel so now the wonderful thing about this mixture is it obviously was enough to keep him alive for 390 days which is over a year he survived on that very little bread and a little bit of water a day but y'all that was starvation mode it kept him alive it kept him alive and we do know now that combining grains with beans do make a complete protein but it is not those nice slopes you find in the store it is not these nice loads that we're going to be making today it's probably definitely was not as delicious probably had a slight smell of cow dung because it was cooked on it or in it and so that's the real ezekiel's bread fascinating i'm just fascinated and again much credit to my husband he's the one who told me all this and again brain brain brain blown so again fascinating going back to see what the bible actually says so we've kind of basically have been a little manipulated with the marketing and again ezekiel bread it the way that we make it it's not bad um you know it is good for you especially with freshly milled grains i do not believe that you have to sprout it um definitely see my you know do we have to sprout or not video i'll link it up here talk about the phytic acid things like that because i know the ezekiel 49 bread in the store really emphasizes the sprouted grains again i can go ahead and tell you right now this stuff was not sprouted it was just coarsely milled um the beggars bread small amounts of it nothing fancy cooked in cow manure cooked in or on cow newer so there it is i hope that was very fascinating to you again i love it this is what just the bible really says about ezekiel bread and so now we're going to be moving on to getting the rest of this bread baked all right and holy cow y'all while i was talking about that this has already risen it only took about 30 minutes now again i used instant yeast with this with active dry yeast it will be probably the full hour so keep that in mind so again 350 degree preheated oven and this is just about i would say a quarter inch above my pan and we're gonna put this in here i always try to do under to make sure i don't overcook it so we're gonna do it for a four i'm gonna set my timer for 40 minutes check on it um and see if it if it needs the extra time my oven now is electric it's probably going to be right at that 45 to 50 minute mark so let's get these in one thing i will say is because it is a softer battery type dough it does jiggle a bit so be very very careful when you take your towels off and be very careful when you're putting it in because it was jostling just a little bit whenever i was taking towels off and putting it in and picking it up in the oven so just be very careful all right y'all so i did this for 45 minutes and as you can see that might have been a bit bit a bit much it does look a little burn however it's still it actually feels soft on top um i think i have been served this ezekiel bread before and i do remember it being darker another thing that i completely goofed that she stressed about about not over rising and i accidentally did it did rise just a little bit more than a quarter of an inch as you can see it fell a bit and came over and it actually like on this loaf dripped down a bit onto into my oven and i'll get to clean that up so definitely be super crazy careful about not over rising it next time i do this i may go ahead and just put it in a 9x13 i'm not sure but as you can see these these are huge this is nine inches very very tall it did fall a bit but let's go ahead and get these out of the pan and i'm gonna go ahead and slice it up hot it's already fallen anyway and it's probably a denser bread anyway and see how these taste this is also why i always grease the very top rims of my bread because you just never know when this may happen so let's try and get this out here there we go okay there's one oh that looks kind of pretty a little hard getting out of the pan that may probably have just been my fault not greasing it up but there's one okay and then let's do this monstrosity that really had a hard time in the oven here again so know that this recipe will completely spill over if you are not careful all right so here you go with this one again problems getting out of the pan because it came over but you can see it's quite crusty now as always i generally recommend that you wait until the loaf cool down before slicing however i'm very anxious i want to go ahead and see how this tastes here's the things that i definitely messed up on i let it rise too much my oven also was not fully preheated when going in so i'm going to make sure that i don't rise it too much that also my towels kind of stuck to it so whenever i took it off it did kind of mess with the top of it i think that's why this one and this one fell a little bit so some things that we're going to be tweaking and i'll have to try again tomorrow but let's see how how these taste all right pretty nice on the inside as you can see okay now let's try this ooh nice and hot the best y'all that is so good this is really delicious and there's no butter or anything on it because usually you know butter makes it better oh but this is this is so good now i'm going to cheat and actually let's make it even better with some butter okay that right there might be a bit simple having the butter it is really good y'all it's very very good even with nothing on it but this is a delicious recipe i'm just going to tweak it a little bit try to do it again without causing it to fall over so we'll have to see how that goes all right so that's it y'all um so if you noticed i did kind of oops made some goofs with this recipe i was going to try and remake the recipe for you guys before this video came out but i just didn't have time to do it all over again so just know what i'm going to be doing next time to prevent it from overflowing is i'm actually only going to be filling up those bread loaf pans to about halfway rising it to just as it reaches the top maybe a little over the top and then making sure my oven is completely preheated before baking it and probably only bake it for probably 40 minutes and again i would leave it in the pan for about 10 or 15 minutes after i take it out of the oven because it's going to continue baking and hopefully that'll keep the crust together and not fall over all that stuff so i'm thinking again just doing it half full with the loaf pans and the rest of the dough i will actually i actually either put in like muffin tins to make little muffins or maybe a little eight by eight pan just to have some extra bread because you know i don't want to waste any of the dough those are some tips and i'll definitely post polly to instagram and share with you if i make it again again so many people have said that they use this in muffins and pancakes and waffles so i'm excited to use the ezekiel flower mix that we have and other things hopefully this video was a bit mind-blowing to you that we got into things that you maybe have not ever seen before and realize also the power of marketing we are so convinced that it's so healthy and ezekiel lived on this for 390 days it's so healthy for you and while this bread is healthy and yeah the way that we make it is very delicious my children love this bread they love it the most with butter and honey on it it's just so good it is a good bread and we know that it is nutritious but it is not the way ezekiel had it in the bible in the slightest in the slightest and thank god that it is better than what he had in the bible so again be sure to check out the description box below for all the things the printables where you buy things all that wonderful stuff and be sure to like this video if you found it as fascinating as i did and i will see you next week bye [Music] you
