eui it's one of the big four firms a tremendous global organization that provides really incredible career opportunities either in an early stage mid-stage or even late stages in your career ey is a firm that has grown rapidly over the last 20 years and today i'm going to unpack some of their growth some of their strategy and what i think the future looks like for ey in addition we're going to talk about some of the good stuff like interviews and salaries and how to prepare if you're interested in tackling the seemingly insurmountable mountain of getting a job at ui i'm jenny ray leroux i'm a former band consultant and along with a great team at management consulted we help people prepare for over 170 firms interviews worldwide ey is one of them and so today i'm excited to bring you some of the insider information that we've gathered over more than 13 years of working with clients to break into the firm at ey first of all a little bit of history ernst young is where the history of ey came from although now they are officially called ey and ey it's a mammoth firm generally known as one of the world's top consulting as well as audit assurance and tax firms and collectively with the big four including deloitte pwc and kpmg ey is known as one of the world's top firms for advisory services ewy is also the only one of the big four who for over 22 years has been listed on fortune's 100 best companies list so that should say something that's differentiated about its culture today we're going to provide information and an overview about ui so that you can get to know the firm a little bit more ey began as a series of legacy acquisitions from one single shingle to many shingles of organizations that combined through acquisition to join into the firms in 1989 two firms got married ernst and winnie and arthur young and co and they formed ernst young which is the real backbone of the company that we have today now ernst young has faced regulatory challenges and challenges to their business headwinds from macroeconomic markets but they've navigated them successfully with an overall strategy and part of that strategy has been an increased focus on consulting services in fact ey was one of the first firms to make a big commitment to strategy consulting by acquiring the parthenon group in 2014 and so it has a sub-segment of its practice still called ey parthenon and that group really has retained a separate function inside the organization they've probably been the best acquiring partner out of deloitte pwc and ey they've done the most successful job of retaining the culture and the niche of that organization and you can see it in the way that they've grown their consulting revenues today ey is divided into four segments assurance tax strategy and transactions and consulting and for our purposes we move strategy and transactions and consulting together so that it's easier to compare them apples to apples to the other organizations out of the big four ey is the third largest but that doesn't mean that they're small eui has over 700 offices and over 300 000 employees so you get all the benefits of being a part of a massive well-structured well-defined global organization and that carries over into a career path it carries over into comp it carries over into culture there's a lot of things that ui does incredibly well so let's dive into some of those specifically first of all let's talk about the career path at ui if you're interested in joining one of the advantages is they have a traditional two year promotion cycle while sometimes those can be stretched to three years having an average of a two-year promotion gives a better sense of forward momentum inside the organization than organizations that promote a little bit more slowly and so if you start as an analyst which is for college graduates in only about two years you move up to an associate level position that's a pre-mba role which means that you're there for only two to three years most people inside ey don't then go get their mba but there are a lot of people who do join from an mba especially into the ey parthenon group and that is called a consultant level position from there you move to manager from there you move to director or executive director and then from there you move into the partner role so with all those promotions and micro promotions you have the opportunity to get refreshed training uh advancement in terms of your responsibility and a very clear sense of where you're headed inside the organization the ey culture is really built around its people in fact they have a saying you thrive we thrive their focus is really on helping people thrive inside their organization it creates tremendous power creates tremendous momentum and it really builds culture inside eui many people though at ui can expect to work a minimum of 50 to 60 hours a week even from home and so get ready buckle up you're gonna have a lot of work to do however that work is productive it makes a lot of sense for the organizations and it really helps move other organizations forward so it's meaningful work for that 50 to 60 hours that you're committing now let's say that you're interested in jumping into ey great global firm lots of progression and as i'm going to talk about in a second they actually pay pretty well too how do you prepare for an interview at ui well first of all you need to be ready for both a behavioral interview which is the dominant form of interview inside ey and specifically inside ey parthenon you need to be prepared at the mbb level for a case interview you're going to do a lot more math than you would in for example kpmg interview you're going to need to focus on breaking things down in terms of strategy and you need to really be able to tackle some of the key issues that ey focuses on especially in their strategy consulting and their transactions business at management consulted we have a great free case prep guide that can get you well on your way to prepping for an ey interview now what's the reward for all your hard work you investigated ey you understand why you might want to work there you've prepared for the interview what do you get on the back end well as an undergrad you get paid pretty well about 72 000 was their starting salary in 2021. at the mba level it's even more attractive about 155 000 and so ey you'll see it has a little bit more focus on its younger talent than firms like kpmg but it pays well and you have that two-year progression cycle so you also advance pretty rapidly inside your career if you're interested in other levels or other countries because those numbers are us-based make sure you check out our full salary report on the web page at
