on this tour we're going to take you down a road that gets a lot of unusual publicity for us this publicity overshadows the fact that it's just another fun road to experience it goes through some beautiful scenery and also has some unique aviation history we're going to take you on a trip down the extraterrestrial highway you've probably heard about the et highway or nevada's state route 375 because it's the closest road to the mysterious area 51. a lot of people mainly conspiracy theorists and mystery seekers talk about the things that go on around this road but none of them show you what the area looks like or explain the facts about some of the places near it well we're going to fix that with this video tour and along with demystifying some folklore we're going to have a little fun while traveling down this highway so keep your eyes open you might see some unusual objects or dare i say a ufo or two while watching the tour you can test your observation skills by trying to count how many strange objects you may see along the way how many of them were from this world or how many are not at the end of the video feel free to leave a comment and let us know how many ufos or aliens you saw but are they ufos only if you can't identify them on one of our transits of the et highway we actually did see a ufo or we thought we did after looking at it a little more carefully however it was just an odd-looking aircraft flying by in this case a unique heavy lift helicopter and so it became an ifo an identified flying object first let me explain where the et highway is located a lot of people think it's just outside of las vegas well if you consider driving 110 miles is just outside of town you're right then again since many things in nevada are in remote places 110 miles might not be that far et highway stretches from the small hamlet of crystal springs which is 110 road miles north of las vegas to another small hamlet called warm springs which is about 50 miles east of tonapah speaking of tonopah it's your best option for a place to stay the night your trip down the et highway puts you in a very remote part of nevada and is far away from the commercial centers of both vegas and reno there are several hotels to choose from in tonopah and we highly recommend the mizpah which is clearly the centerpiece of downtown tonopah this hotel was originally opened in 1907 and lovingly restored and reopened in 2011 by the klein family these are the same clients that own klein sellers the makers of fine wine from sonoma california the mizpah hotel offers several types of rooms to choose from including the wagon room and the mysterious lady and red room the lobby on the main floor is beautifully decorated with vintage decor from tonopah's heyday and is like stepping back in time learn more about the mizpah or make a reservation to stay for a night or two by visiting their website at the mizpah hotel dot com or call them at this number the et highway is just under 100 miles long that's 160 kilometers it passes by only one town rachel this town has almost no services except for the renowned little alien inn which is actually pronounced little alien the entire route is on good pavement and you can take any vehicle on it just make sure that whatever you're driving has a full tank of gas before starting down et highway there actually are gas stations a few miles south of crystal springs in the town of alamo but nowhere else until you get to tonopah if that's where you're going that would be 150 miles without a gas station all right now i'm going to explain the real deal about area 51 and another lesser-known area called the tonopah test range that the et highway goes nearer in the large swath of nevada desert between las vegas and the e.t highway sits the nellis air force range this area is actually a combination of facilities used by different branches of our military part of the nellis range was used for nuclear weapons testing you may have heard of places like mercury nevada or frenchman flat all of these places where testing occurred have area numbers area 15 area 32 etc when the cia needed a remote place with a long runway to test a high-flying spy plane they were given a big dry lake called groom lake that had an area designation of 51 so that's why you hear the names area 51 and the groom lake facility when people talk about this area the groom lake facility came into being in 1955 when testing began on the lockheed u-2 a high-flying spy plane since then area 51 has been used to test and develop several other aircraft such as the beloved sr-71 blackbird the f-117 nighthawk and the f-22 raptor the last two both being stealth fighters once these secret planes are developed and repeatedly tested at area 51 they are then mass produced near los angeles and then they are operated at another top secret facility that facility is the second secret place et highway passes by the tonopah test range the tonepot test range or ttr for short which is also referred to as area 10 is about 30 miles southeast of its namesake the historic mining town of tonapah ironically some conspiracy theorists and even a bugs bunny cartoon refer to ttr as area 52 which is a way to associate it with area 51 but isn't the correct designation there's no secret place named area 52 ttr was initially used for weapons and missile testing but after the f-117 was ready for service several f-117 squadrons secretly operated out of the ttr before they were unclassified in 1988 the secrecy of the f-117 operations certainly added to the mystery of what was going on out at the ttr as you've seen in our other tours we're going to use google earth to give you an idea of where these secret places are in relation to the road we'll be traveling plus we'll pop in and out of other locations related to area 51 further to the south such as los angeles we probably all know where las vegas is located our tour will follow i-15 then us-93 heading north where the et highway starts at crystal springs the et highway crosses its first mountain range and drops down into ticaboo valley upon descending into ticaboo valley you'll see this long straight road this is one of the entrances to area 51 which is located just over the following mountain range as you can see here incidentally this is near the site of the infamous black mailbox which no longer exists using google earth will now pop over the mountain range to the south for our first look at the area 51 facility you can see its long runway extending out onto groom lake zooming in more you can see its collection of buildings and network of taxiways the airplanes you see on the taxiways are boeing 737s known as janets and are used to transport workers up from las vegas these janets are regularly seen taking off from las vegas mccarran airport and departing out of a terminal near the tropicana hotel now let's take a quick detour towards los angeles many of the aircraft developed at area 51 were later mass-produced at lockheed's skunk works plant in burbank here this included the sr-71 and f-117 now you think area 51 was secret check this out thousands of motion pictures and tv shows were produced here films that millions of people have viewed since the beginning of the motion picture industry and if you're not sure where this is watch this see where we are now a lot of secret stuff went on in burbank under the noses of so many hollywood people around 1990 lockheed moved the skunk works 33 miles north to palmdale's air force plant number 42 located here aircraft was commonly assembled in either burbank or palmdale then trucked or flown in large transport aircraft to area 51 for testing incidentally another 20 miles north of palmdale is edwards air force base here this is where all aircraft for the air force is tested area 51 is actually a satellite facility of edwards for testing secret aircraft aircraft that shouldn't be seen by the public area 51 is not administered by neighboring nellis air force base in nevada it's managed by edwards in california since 1955 many secret aircraft have flown back and forth between these places in southern california and area 51 rarely being seen by public eyes maybe you'll be one of those rare few that get to see one of those secret planes or whatever you want to call them while traveling e.t highway before we head back to the e.t highway there's one more place to point out that we'll pass by and that's the tonapat test range here you can see area 51 and the et highway and here is the ttr here's a closer look at the ttr facility where a large squadron of f-117s used to be stationed who knows what's going on there now okay back to the e.t highway in ticaboo valley which is where we'll learn more about josha trees yes i'm talking about desert plants not secret aircraft we continue heading west over a small ridge and into the next valley here's where we pass by the town of rachel we cross the next mountain ridge and enter railroad valley which is a very long valley typical of basin and range geology in central nevada railroad valley stretches for over a hundred and twenty miles to the north but we're going to be in it for only 20 of those miles leaving railroad valley we go through this narrow passage between two valleys where water has run off from various springs in the area and created a large pond next we enter hot creek valley this will be the last valley we go through until et highway ends at the junction with highway us-6 and that's it as we zoom back out you can see where we started at crystal spring on us-93 where we end it at warm springs on us-6 and where tonipa is located alright we're ready to start our virtual road trip of the et highway we're going to use this map from gaia gps use the link in the video description below to purchase this collection of very useful maps at a discount we're going to start by driving from us-93 taking this short transition onto highway 318 then on to the beginning of highway 375 the et highway at crystal springs here we go and don't forget to keep an eye out for anything that looks out of the ordinary [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause]
