Exploring The Winchester Mystery House

today we're visiting the winchester mystery house here in san jose california and first and foremost a huge thank you to the folks here at the winchester mystery house for hosting us because get this we're going inside and we're taking you with us chances are if you're watching our channel at some point you heard about the winchester mystery house i was here many years ago got to take a tour and now we're doing a self-guided tour but this is jessica's very first time ever visiting this place are you ready for it baby ghoul i'm ready now i have a feeling that when we go through there they're going to give us a little bit of a history tour about this place but i want to fill you in as well as our subscribers on some things in case they don't know about this place all right sarah winchester yeah she um of the winchester rifle family she built this house and pretty much the entire time that she was building it she never stopped building it every single day day and night people were constantly constantly working on this place now she was very superstitious she even believed in ghosts there are over over 150 rooms in this place and each night she would sleep in a different room in an attempt to try and confuse the ghost there are doorways that go to nowhere walkways that go up to the ceiling windows that open to walls and somewhere in the belly of this mansion is a seance room and we're going to see it oh yeah baby ghoul there's one more thing i want to tell you about this place have you ever seen the movie rose red well this house this mansion is very very similar to that you see it's built on what they call a floating foundation which means the house is always shifting and with that many rooms and this kind of supernatural ghost story you never really know what to expect today this house has four stories but in its heyday in its former glory believe it or not this house had seven stories let's go inside [Music] [Music] so [Music] look at that even to this day they're still doing construction now i said earlier that when sarah winchester was alive that every single day day and night they were doing construction when she died all the construction ceased it's neat to see that they're still doing it though you know what i think is really cool though what's that is that while building to the house you would think oh they just made the house bigger and bigger and weird rooms inside like a big old box right but no like so the house fans out in very interesting formations so it's like it's not just a massive mansion that they built on you know inside made all these rooms and stuff and made additions like a you know like a normal square house would be it goes in all directions like what i thought was a little patio room is still connected to the house it's cool [Music] you're really loving the gardens aren't you you know me i always have my feet out yeah you do no matter where we are at some point jessica will disappear she'll take her shoes off and she will feel things with her feet it's soft one of those small pleasures is getting to feel soft grass on your feet all right so here we go now we basically have this entire house to ourselves but there are few people here and there so if we start hearing things hopefully it's not going to be somebody else this carriage is beautiful from the distance i thought it was velvet but it's not it's leather i feel like we need one of these in our house let's get rid of the car and take that okay this is one of the stairs to nowhere i feel like i've seen a scene in a movie where they have basically a spare sort of stairs like that that goes nowhere and at the end someone bunks their head but this might actually be a trap door in the movie i can't remember what's really neat is as you walk through there's different spots where a lot of the building materials because remember sarah winchester was always building she was constantly building so all of the supplies are still here on display like it's a museum look at that a sign that says the carriage house and do you remember what she was saying about that stained glass window there i think that she designed this one because it has the spider webs in it and it has 13 orbs which was her favorite number i feel like we would have gotten along with her very well and there's tons of spider webs especially in the stained glass here in the house everywhere and i love spiderweb stained glass it's one of my favorite things but it's so lovely and here's one of the only known photos of sarah winchester here on the property sitting in the back of the carriage now jessica you're rather short and sarah winchester was just this woman right here yeah so sarah winchester had severe arthritis so she had a lot of the stairs taken out of her house and these smaller stairs put in so she can walk comfortably throughout her home oh yeah i'm six foot two and i'm having a hard time getting through here it's tight even for me and i'm not that big right look at this they do show a scene in the movie where there's you know the ghost shoots her or whatever and it's very similar to this holly right here but obviously for the movie they had to make it much larger to get their equipment and the film or there might be another one i'm gonna stand here just go ahead and walk all the way up it's very unique so tight it is [Music] all the walkways in this place are just tiny [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] hello that's pretty nice of you i don't know if they still work but if they do then somebody thought they heard a ghost maybe yeah all right baby goal your very first time at the winchester mystery house we're definitely going to be coming back here during the halloween season but what did you think it's enchanting it is well worth the drive and the visit it the staff was wonderful so beautiful i i look forward to coming back did you have a favorite room [Music] all the stairs all the stairs switch back stairs switch back stairs so like we said 7-11 stairs yeah so the sarah winchester had really bad arthritis so she can barely lift her feet a certain height so all the stairs inside the house were shorter now my favorite room in the past this is my second time the very first time i went through i love the seance room and this one i love the sands room not just because i like spooky things but because it's just neat that in the center of the house there was a room devoted to seances supposedly and the secret patch's door yeah that's cool now we've learned something else today that i didn't know you didn't know uh you asked about why it was called the mystery house and one of the i'm going to call them docents the tour guide she said that after sarah winchester died harry houdini heard a whole bunch of mysterious stories coming from this place so he made a trip here and after spending a couple hours in the house and he left he said that place is just a mystery to me as a mystery to me so he's technically harry houdini is technically the man the person credited to naming the winchester mystery house he coined the term mystery house yeah phenomenal i've never known that if you ever find yourself up in the san francisco bay area or san jose and you're thinking about visiting the winchester mystery house do it they have all kinds of different tours they have all kinds of new things coming up especially the terry houdini escape room the harry houdini escape room halloween activities the 13th every friday the 13th they have a special thing going on here i love it i
