♪ [APPLAUSE] >> Father: THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH. WELCOME. I'M FATHER MITCH PACWA AND WELCOME TO EWTN LIVE WHERE WE BRING YOU GUESTS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD. I JUST WANT TO MENTION A COUPLE OF THINGS. FIRST OF ALL, CHRIST IS RISEN, INDEED HE IS RISEN! >> Guest: ALLELUIA. >> Father: [SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE] NOW, THE ORTHODOX ARE STILL IN HOLY WEEK AND CELEBRATING EASTER THIS COMING WEEK. THIS IS HOW IN THE EASTERN CHURCH, THROUGHOUT THIS WEEK, BECAUSE WE CELEBRATE EASTER EVERYDAY THIS WEEK. IT'S THE WEEK OF EASTER. TYPICAL IN THE EASTERN CHURCH, CHRIST IS RISEN, INDEED HE ISRISEN. [SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE] AND WE ALL OUGHT TO HAVE THAT SENSE OF CONTINUING TO CELEBRATE THIS GREAT FEAST OF EASTER EVERYDAY. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE ALL THE READINGS THIS WEEK OF THE GOSPEL WHICH COME FROM THE RESURRECTION. AND THAT'S IMPORTANT. ALSO, I WANT TO MENTION THAT TODAY IS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSASSINATION OF REVEREND DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR AND HE DID A LOT OF VERY FINE WORK, REALLY SOUGHT TO BRING RECONCILIATION, WAS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FIGURE IN OUR COUNTRY AT A TIME THAT WAS RIGHT TO HELP BRING ABOUT SOME OF THE SOCIAL JUSTICE. MUCH OF WHICH HE DID RIGHT HERE IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, AS WELL AS MONTGOMERY. SO, WE REMEMBER HIM WELL. AND WE PRAY THAT THERE WOULD BE THE KIND OF RACIAL PEACE AND JUSTICE THAT HE CALLED FOR. WELL, TONIGHT, WE HAVE A GUEST. AS USUAL ON WEDNESDAYS. AND TO MANY OF YOU, SHE IS KNOWN SIMPLY AS THE PURGATORY LADY BECAUSE SHE'S WRITTEN SO MANY BOOKS ABOUT THE SUBJECT OF PURGATORY AND PRAYING FOR THE HOLY SOULS. I RECOMMEND THOSE BOOKS ALL THE TIME. BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD. BUT TONIGHT, SHE HAS A NEW BOOK. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO CALL HER AFTER THIS. MAYBE SHE'S GOTTEN OUT OF PURGATORY AND GOING TO BE THE MERCY LADY. I DON'T KNOW. BUT AT ANY RATE, SHE'S HERE WITH US TONIGHT TO SHARE THE NEW BOOK ABOUT HOW ST. FAUSTINA KOWALSKA WISDOM AND SPIRITUAL INSIGHT CAN HELP US TO STEP AWAY FROM THE CONSTANT NOISINESS OF THE WORLD AND REALLY CONNECT WITH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THROUGH THE PEACE AND SILENCE OF ADORATION. SO, PLEASE, WELCOME THE AUTHOR OF THE NEW BOOK, ST. FAUSTINA PRAYER FOR HAD ADORATION. SUSAN TASSONE. GOOD TO HAVE YOU. [APPLAUSE] WELCOME TO "SWEET HOME, ALABAMA" FROM SWEET HOME CHICAGO. >> WELL, CHILLY, SNOWY. >> RIGHT, LOOKS LIKE SUGAR BUT THEN IT MELTS AND IT'S DIRTY. HAPPY EASTER. >> WELL, IT'S A HABIT WE GET TOGETHER EVERY TIME AT THE SAME TIME OF YEAR. >> Fr. Pacwa: THAT'S RIGHT. WHEN YOU WRITE A NEW BOOK. AND I READ IT IN THE PRE PUBLICATION FORM. IT'S AN IMPORTANT BOOK. YOU HAVE A LOT OF IMPORTANT INSIGHTS FROM ST. FAUSTINA TO HELP PEOPLE WHEN THEY DO EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. FIRST STEP, LET'S ESTABLISH, WHAT IS ADORATION, EUCHARISTIC ADORATION OF OUR BLESSED LORD. WHAT'S IT MEAN? >> PUT IT SIMPLY, FATHER, THAT YOU ARE ADORING THE BODY, BLOOD, SOUL, AND DIVINITY OF THE BODY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. WE RECEIVE HIM IN COMMUNION AND IT'S A NATURAL FLOW, ADORING IS GAZING IN FAITH, IN FRONT OF HIS PRESENCE. IT'S A POWERFUL FORM OF PRAYER. THINK IT'S A CRITICAL FORM OF PRAYER BECAUSE AGAIN, AS YOU SAID, PEOPLE ARE, THERE'S SO MUCH NOISE WHETHER IT'S WRITTEN, ON TV OR THE INTERNET AND THIS GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO BE WITH HIM. HE CALLS US TO BE WITH HIM. HE TOLD MARGARET MARY, MARGARET MARY AL 0QUE FOR MAN TO COME AND BE WITH HIM IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT, TO SIT WITH HIM, HIS HEART BURNS WITH LOVE. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING, IT'S DEALING WITH THE HUMAN NEED NOT BEING MET. WE HAVE A VERY NOISE-FILLED WORLD. WHEN YOU ARE IN AN ELEVATOR AND SO MANY OTHER PLACES, THERE'S JUST NOISE. IT'S, WE DON'T EVEN CALL IT MUSIC. IT'S CALLED MUSE-YACK. AND THERE'S NOISE AROUND US, VEHICLES, EVERYTHING ELSE HAPPENING AROUND US. THERE'S ALSO THE NOISE OF JUST SO MUCH ACTIVITY. I USE THIS AS A CHAPTER IN ONE OF MY BOOKS EARLIER. IT'S THE PRINCIPLE THAT IF THE DEVIL CAN'T MAKE YOU BAD, HE MAKES YOU BUSY. TOO BUSY TO PRAY. TOO BUSY TO LISTEN TO GOD. >> TOO BUSY TO HEAR HIS VOICE. IN FACT, THROUGHOUT THE DIARY, IT WAS A COMMON THEME OF HERS TO BE SILENT. AND IN FACT, FATHER MITCH, YOU PROBABLY NOTICED, IN THE ENDORSEMENTS, ARCHBISHOP BAKER, CARDINAL SARAH ENDORSE THE BOOK. AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT EACH OTHER WERE WRITING BECAUSE THAT WAS THEIR FAVORITE CHAPTER. WE HAD A CHAPTER ON SILENT ADORATION. HE ACTUALLY TOLD ST. FAUSTINA THAT HE CAN'T GET THROUGH A SOUL IF HE'S NOT SILENT. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO HEAR HIM. AND WE HAD A SPECIAL, WE HAD QUOTES OF HERS, FATHER, WHAT SHE SAID ABOUT SILENT ADORATION. ABOUT SILENCE, I SHOULD SAY. SHE SAID THAT SILENCE IS SO STRONG. NO ADVERSITIES HARM IT IF IT PERSEVERES IN SILENCE. SHE SAID, MY PARTICULAR EXAMEN IS THE SAME, NAMELY, UNION WITH THE CHRIST IN SILENCE. A SILENT SOUL IS CAPABLE OF ATTAINING CLOSEST UNION WITH GOD, LIVING ALMOST UNDER THE INSPIRATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. GOD WORKS IN A SILENT SOUL WITHOUT HINDERANCE. >> Fr. Pacwa: ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS, TOO, ABOUT THE SILENCE, IT'S NOT ONLY IN ABSENCE OF THE NOISE. THE SILENCE IN EUCHARISTIC ADORATION IS FOR THE PRESENCE OF GOD SO THAT OUR LORD JESUS IS PRESENT IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. AND I THINK ONE OF THE COMMON TEACHINGS SINCE THE VATICAN COUNCIL IS THAT WE HAVE EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT ARE BOTH PORTRAYED IN THE POST CONCILIAR DOCUMENTS AS AN EXTENSION OF MASS. MASS THAT'S OFTENTIMES NOT QUIET, THE COMMUNITY HAS GATHERED. BUT THE TIME FOR SILENCE IN BENEDICTION AND IN ADORATION. THAT'S WHERE WE ALSO ARE SILENT WITH JESUS, WHAT DOES POPE FRANCIS, ST. JOHN PAUL II, MOTHER ANGELICA AND ST. FAUSTINA HAVE IN COMMON? THEY DID ADORATION AND THEY ADORED. IT WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR SPIRITUAL LIFE. AND WHAT DID IT DO TO THEM? IT TRANSFORMED THEM, THEMSELVES. AND IT CHANGED THE WORLD. TAKE POPE FRANCIS. I WAS DOING RESEARCH, FATHER AND FIVE YEARS, HE'S BEEN OUR POPE. WHAT I DISCOVERED, HE WAS CONSTANTLY TALKING ABOUT ADORATION. BRINGS IT UP MANY TIMES. AND IN FACT, IN MARCH -- NO, WE'RE IN APRIL. HE WANTED EVERY CHURCH, A CHURCH IN EVERY DIOCESE TO HAVE 24 HOURS WITH THE LORD SO THEY COULD WALK IN AND BE IN HIS PRESENCE. AND ALSO, HE ENCOURAGED CONFESSION AT THE SAME TIME. HE ALSO, THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING. IN FEBRUARY, HE SPOKE TO NEWLY-INSTALLED PASTORS IN ROME AND SAID THAT WE TEACH THE PEOPLE HOW TO SING. WE TEACH THEM HOW TO PRAY. BUT WE DON'T TEACH THEM HOW TO ADORE. TEACH THEM HOW TO ADORE IN SILENCE. THEN, WE HAVE ST. JOHN PAUL II, ACTUALLY FATHER, HE HAD A DESK AND CHAIR IN THE CHAPEL WHEN HE WAS WRITING HIS ENCYCLICALS. IT WAS PRETTY FASCINATING TO REALIZE THAT. AND HE SAID THAT WE NEED EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. THE CHURCH NEEDS IT AND THE WORLD NEEDS IT BECAUSE OF THE CRIMES THAT ARE BEING COMMIT NATURAL DISASTER THE WORLD. AND WE NEED TO MAKE REPARATION. HE SAID WE NEED TO ADORE, WE NEED TO NEVER STOP ADORING. AND THEN, WE HAVE MOTHER ANGELICA. MOTHER ANGELICA WAS A SISTER OF PERPETUAL ADORATION. CLARE WAS THE 13TH CENTURY SAINT THAT WAS A DEVOTEE OF PRAYING IN THE PRESENCE. WHAT WAS INTERESTING, THE FRUIT OF HER ADORATION, WHAT WAS IT? THIS NETWORK. THIS GLOBAL NETWORK. AND IF YOU DON'T LET ME SIDE BAR, I JUST HAVE TO SHARE THIS, FATHER. YOU AND I ARE HERE. THIS IS WHAT AMAZES ME. I WAS ABOUT 23, A COUPLE DAYS AGO. >> YOU TURNED 23 A COUPLE DAYS AGO. >> YEAH, PRETTY YOUNG, ISN'T IT, FATHER? I LOOK YOUNG. AND I MET YOU AT LOYOLA. WE WENT TO LOYOLA. OUR POOR RAMBLERS DIDN'T MAKE IT BUT THEY DID A GOOD RUN. AND I WAS WORKING IN THE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND YOU WERE A SCHOLASTIC, YOU WERE TELLING ME. I MET YOU. THIS WAS BACK, WHAT, 1970'S. >> ABOUT 1975. >> RIGHT, YEAH, 1975. AND I ACTUALLY WORKED FOR FATHER GANON. >> THE DIRECTOR OF STUDIES. >> AND I WAS A DEPARTMENT SECRETARY. I HAD A BIG FILING CABINET. AND PART OF MY JOB WAS TO TAKE CARE OF THE SCHOLASTICS. AND THERE'S ALL OF THESE NAMES. AND YOUR NAME WAS IN THAT FILE, MITCH PACWA. >> IT'S A BIG FILE. >> NO, FATHER, GUESS WHAT WAS IN THE FILE? NOTHING. >> WELL, IT'S BIG NOW. >> WELL, YOU WERE PRETTY CLEAN THEN, FATHER. AND THINK YOU ARE PRETTY INTERESTING NOW. IT WAS FASCINATING BECAUSE OF MOTHER ANGELICA AND BECAUSE OF HER ADORING IN THE FOOD FRUIT OF HER ADORATION, LOOK AT THIS. HERE WE ARE. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD MEET THE MIND OF 12 PROFESSORS ON A EWTN GLOBAL TV NETWORK. THAT'S THE POWER OF ADORATION. AND THEN MOTHER THERESA. WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT HER. SHE STARTED TO DO ADORATION ONCE A WEEK. AND THE REASON WAS, SHE WAS VOCATIONS. THEY WANTED TO INCREASE VOCATIONS AND SHE STARTED TO DO IT ONCE EVERYDAY. EVERYDAY SHE DID ADORATION WITH HER SISTERS. AND WHAT HAPPENED WAS, VOCATIONS DOUBLED. AND THEN, THE OTHER THING, WHAT WAS INTERESTING TO NOTE, PEOPLE, THE SECULAR MEDIA WOULD TALK ABOUT HOW SHE TOOK CARE OF THE POOR, HOW SHE BANDAGED THE SICK. BUT ONE THING THAT THEY NEVER ADDRESSED, FATHER, THEY NEVER ADDRESSED THIS VITAL ACT THAT SHE DID OF ADORATION ON A DAILY BASIS. AND SHE SAID IF SHE DIDN'T DO ADORATION, SHE WOULD PROBABLY BE BURNT OUT. THEN, WE HAVE FAUSTINA. OKAY. MAYBE YOU CAN SAY THIS IN POLISH. HER LIFE WAS ADORATION. IN FACT, HER NAME WAS ST. FAUSTINA OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. AND MOST PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW THAT. THERE'S A SAYING. YOU CAN SAY THIS IN POLISH, YOU BECOME THE ONE YOU BEFRIEND. SHE BECAME THE ONE SHE BEFRIENDED. SHE WANTED TO BE THE LIVING HOST SHE CALLED HERSELF. JESUS IS THE BIG H AND SHE WAS THE HILL H, HOST. SHE WANTED TO HONOR HIM THROUGH WHO HE WAS. AND SHE WANTED TO BECOME THE ONE SHE BEFRIENDED. SHE DID. AND THAT'S WHAT ADORATION IS. YOU BECOME THE ONE THAT YOU BEFRIEND. YOU BECOME THE COMPASSION. YOU BECOME, MOTHER THERESA, POPE JOHN PAUL, POPE FRANCIS, THEY BECOME THE ONE THEY BEFRIEND. >> Fr. Pacwa: I KNOW THAT MOTHER ANGELICA USED TO SPEND TWO HOURS IN ADORATION FOR EVERY HOUR SHE WAS ON TV. AND SHE MADE SURE THAT SHE WAS PRAYING MORE. AND SHE GOT UP PRETTY EARLY TO GET UP AND DO THAT ADORATION AND PRAYER. ARCHBISHOP SHEEN WAS THE SAME WAY. HE ALSO DID ADORATION. AND A LOT OF FOLKS, THINK, ARE AFRAID. WELL, I DON'T HAVE TIME. AND ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS, I LOVE THE LINE BY SAINT, OH, HE'S THE BISHOP DOWN IN GENEVA. YEAH, FRANCIS DE SALES. SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES WAS TOLD BY THE MAYOR, YOUR EXCELLENCY, I HAVE TO DO, THIS I'M THE MAYOR. I HAVE ALL OF THESE THINGS. AND HIS RESPONSE WAS, SOMEBODY AS BUSY AS YOU NEEDS TO SPEND TWO HOURS A DAY IN ADORATION! AND ONE OF THE MIRACLES THAT HAPPENED, WHEN WE DO DAILY ADORATION IS THAT OUR LORD DOES A MULTIPLICATION OF THE MINUTES. >> Guest: YES, YES. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND INSTEAD OF LOAVES AND FISH, AS WE SPEND MORE TIME IN PRAYER WE GET MORE DONE BECAUSE WE'RE WITH HIM. >> Guest: THAT'S PROVEN, IT'S TRUE. I'VE DONE IT. AND IF I PRAY AND DO THE ROSARY AND ADORATION, GO TO MASS. THEN, MY WORK BECOMES MORE EFFICIENT. AND YOU GET AS MUCH WORK, IF NOT MORE DONE. IN FACT, THIS OTHER POINT ABOUT MOTHER ANGELICA, FATHER, WHEN THINGS GOT ROUGH AND SHE HAD MANY CHALLENGES. YOU KNOW WHAT ST. JOHN PAUL II DID? I SAW IT ON TV HE SENT HER A GUY ENORMOUS, FANTASTIC MONSTRANCE FROM POLAND. AND POINT WAS, KEEP YOUR EYES FOCUSED ON JESUS. STAY FOCUSED AND ALL WILL BE WELL. DON'T LOSE SIGHT OF HIM. AND THE ORDER, PART OF THE PRAYER OF ADORATION IS THANKSGIVING. SHE ADORED AND SHE GAVE THANKSGIVING. BUT I LIKE THE IDEA OF TWO HOURS MORE OF ADORATION FOR EVERY HOUR OF THE TELEVISION PROGRAM THAT SHE DID. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND OF COURSE, THERE ARE ADAPTATIONS, IF YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN, I MEAN, YOU CAN'T, DON'T GET HUNGRY, CRY, I'M GOING TO GO PRAY. YOU CAN'T DO THAT. DUTY CALLS FIRST. THERE ARE SEASONS OF LIFE, AND STATES OF LIFE, WHERE IT IS MORE FEASIBLE AND IT'S BETTER TO SPEND MORE TIME IN ADORATION WITH OUR LORD THAN IN WATCHING OTHER NETWORKS WHERE A LOT OF THE NONSENSE THAT IS PUT ON TV IS MERELY A NOISY DISTRACTION. >> Guest: IF YOU WANT TRUTH, YOU ARE GOING TO GET TRUTH IN ADORATION. >> THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE FEAR. THEY ARE AFRAID IF THEY ARE SILENT AND THEY LISTEN, MAYBE GOD WILL SPEAK AND THAT SCARES THEM. AND THAT'S ONE REASON MAYBE WHY PEOPLE TRY TO AVOID IT. THEY DON'T WANT GOD TO SHAKE UP THE STASIS OF THEIR LIVES. OH, I'M OKAY. DON'T ASK ME TO DO ANYTHING. AND OUR LORD CAN BE FAIRLY PUSHY. THAT'S ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS ABOUT ACTUALLY HEARING FROM GOD IN PRAYER. GO AHEAD. >> Guest: YOU TALKED ABOUT TIME. AND THAT'S ONE INTERESTING THING THAT I NOTICED IN HER DIARY, FATHER, THAT SHE -- >> YOU MEAN ST. FAUSTINA? >> Guest: YEAH. SHE ADORED FOR AN HOUR ON THURSDAYS. BUT FOR THE MOST PART BECAUSE I WORKED SEVERAL MONTHS WITH HER DIARY, SHE REALLY DIDN'T DO HOURS EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE WEEK. SHE DID MOMENTS. SHE DID MINUTES. SHE DID FIVE MINUTES. AND SHE DID 10 MINUTES OF ADORATION. SO, WHEN I READ THAT, I WAS KIND OF RELIEVED BECAUSE YOU FEEL OBLIGATED, IF YOU WANT TO DO ADORATION, IT HAS TO BE FOR JUST THAT HOUR OR A WHOLE HOUR. AND THAT'S NOT THE CASE AT ALL. BASICALLY, IT FREED ME UP TO SAY, SHE PASSED BY THE CHAPEL AND JUST BOWED. I KNOW MANY OF THE EMPLOYEES HERE PASS BY THE DOORS OF THE CHAPEL HERE AND JUST NOD TO OUR LORD, FIVE MINUTES WITH OUR LORD, 10 MINUTES WITH OUR LORD. HE WANTS THAT. DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A WHOLE HOUR. SO, IT GIVES YOU THAT FREEDOM TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. AND SHE DID THAT, FATHER, TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TIME. SO, MOMENTS AND MINUTES, WE HAVE IN OUR BOOK AND WE ACTUALLY LISTED THE KIND OF THINGS THAT SHE SAID TO HIM. JESUS SAVE ME. JESUS HAVE MERCY ON ME. BE MY LIGHT. 0 LIVING HOST, JUST WALKING AND YOU CAN DO IT PAST A CHURCH. I MEAN, IT JUST LET'S YOU KNOW THAT ADORATION IS NOT JUST A FIX FOR AN HOUR. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND I MYSELF, EVEN WHEN I'M DRIVING, IF I AM ON THE EXPRESSWAY, AND IN CHICAGO, THAT'S EASY BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY OLD CHURCHES THAT THEY HAD TO REDIRECT THE EXPRESSWAYS AROUND. BUT I CANNOT PASS A CATHOLIC CHURCH WITHOUT CROSSING MYSELF. AND I KNOW THAT CHRIST IS PRESENT IN THAT CHURCH. I CAN'T PASS IT BY WITHOUT THAT AWARENESS OF HIS PRESENCE THERE. AND JUST CROSSING MYSELF. AND LETTING THE PRESENCE OF CHRIST IN THAT CHURCH SANCTIFY THE WHOLE AREA. >> Guest: RIGHT. THAT WAS ANOTHER THING THAT JUST REALLY TOUCHED ME. SHE, LIKE WE'RE SITTING HERE, SHE REALLY BELIEVED WITH ALL HER HEART AND SOUL, HE'S TRULY THERE, BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY. AND SHE WENT TO HIM AND SHE BROUGHT HER TROUBLES TO HIM. SHE BROUGHT HER WEAKNESSES TO HIM. AND SHE ASKED FOR HEALING, FOR INTERCESSION. EVERYTHING WAS FOR THE LORD. ALL HER THOUGHTS, DESIRES WAS TO HIM. AND IN FACT, HE TRULY WAS THERE. AND HE TRULY DID HELP HER. AND SHE TRULY DID ABANDON HERSELF TO HIM. AND THAT REALLY MOVED ME. SO, WHAT I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS ABSORB THIS, GO TO ADORATION AND SEE IF I HAD A DIFFERENT FEELING. SURE ENOUGH, FATHER, WHEN I WENT ONE DAY. ON THE STREET WHERE CATHOLIC CHARITIES IS, IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THAT. THERE'S A CHAPEL THERE. AND I SAT THERE. AND I LOOKED AT HIM. AFTER READING HER, I WENT, YOU REALLY ARE HERE. THIS IS YOU TRULY HERE. AND YOUR WHOLE MIND SET CHANGES AND I SAID, WHILE YOU ARE HERE, I HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS TO TELL YOU. HE WANTS YOU TO SHARE. HE WANTS YOU, JUST WHAT ST. FAUSTINA WANTED, SHE WANTED TO BECOME THE ONE SHE BEFRIENDED. SHE WANTED TO BE LIKE HIM. AND SHE BASICALLY JUST POURED HER HEART OUT TO HIM. AND SHE, YOU KNOW, IMMERSED HERSELF IN THE FIRE OF HIS LOVE. AND IN THE OCEAN OF MERCY AND SHE WAS ABLE THEN TO, SHE WAS TRANSFORMED, FATHER. SHE WAS EMPOWERED THEN TO GO BACK OUT AND TO BE COMPASSIONATE, TO BE LOVING. YOU KNOW, HE ACTUALLY WAS HER TEACHER. I'VE EXPERIENCED THAT MYSELF WHEN YOU ARE STRUGGLING AND YOU CAN JUST SIT THERE AND GET THIS LIGHT. BUT HE TAUGHT HER NOT TO HOLD GRUDGES. HE TAUGHT HER HOW TO FORGIVE. HE TAUGHT HER YOU KNOW, TO BE AT PEACE AND NOT TO WORRY, HAVE FAITH, HAVE TRUST. AND THAT'S, THEN SHE BECAME THAT LIVING HOST. AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE CALLED TO DO. WE'RE CALLED TO BE WHO HE WANTS US TO BE, WHO HE MADE US FOR A SPECIFIC MISSION. HE MADE US FOR CERTAIN TIME IN THIS WORLD THAT NO ONE HAS. NOBODY HAS BUT YOU, YOU HAVE THIS SPECIAL MISSION, FATHER, THAT NO ONE HAS OR WILL EVER HAVE. AND HE WANTS US TO FULFILL THAT MISSION. HE WANTS US TO BE THE ONE HE MADE US TO BE. AND THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENED TO HER IN ADORATION. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND THINK, AS WE CONSIDER THIS, WE OUGHT TO REMEMBER THE ERA OF HER LIFE. SHE IS RECEIVING THESE DIFFERENT MESSAGES FROM OUR LORD. SHE'S GROWING IN PRAYER AND THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LOVE ABOUT HER DIARY. THERE IS TRUE DEVELOPMENT. IT STARTS OFF KIND OF SYRUPY AND MAYBE KIND OF SUPERFICIAL. BUT THE FURTHER YOU GO INTO IT, THE DEEPER IT BECOMES. CHRIST REALLY IS GIVING HER DEPTH. AND THIS IS THROUGH THE 1920'S AND INTO THE 1930'S. SHE DIED IN 1938. I THINK, WHAT, OCTOBER 1938. THINK ABOUT THAT ERA. THIS IS THE TIME WHEN THE COMMUNISTS TOOK OVER RUSSIA AND TURNED IT INTO THE SOVIET UNION. THEY INVADED POLAND AT LEAST ONCE, 1921, I THINK IT WAS. AND LATER ON, NAZIS, THEY INVADED WITHIN 11 MONTHS OF HER DEATH. AND THE THIRD REICH WAS IN FULL SWING ALREADY ANNEXING DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, AUSTRIA AND CHECK SLOVAKIA AND YOU SEE THE RISE OF ABSOLUTE MERCILESS ATHEISTIC COMMUNISM. AND THE ATHEISTS ARE THE MOST MERCILESS PEOPLE IN THE HISTORY. 305 MILLION PEOPLE DIED IN JUST IN THE WARS AND PERSECUTIONS. AND THAT MERCILESSNESS WAS RUNNING RAMPANT AND SHE LEARNED ABOUT THE MERCY OF CHRIST TO TEACH US IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MERCILESSNESS OF OTHERS. >> SHE BECAME THE IMAGE OF DIVINE MERCY. SHE BECAME HIS PASSION. HE WAS ABLE TO TRANSFORM HER TO BECOME COMPASSION AND OVERWHELMING CONCERN FOR OTHERS. AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE CALLED TO BE. >> Fr. Pacwa: I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THIS EUCHARISTIC ADORATION HAD A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON SOMEONE WHO BECAME SOMETHING OF HER GREAT APOSTLE, NAMELY, POPE JOHN PAUL II. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNEW THIS, BUT HE DID FORCED LABOR FOR THE NAZIS AT A STONE QUARRY. >> NOT TOO FAR AWAY FROM WHERE SHE WAS. >> WELL, IT'S HER GRAVE THAT OVERLOOKS THE QUARRY. IT'S JUST A RAILROAD TRACK THAT SEPARATES IT. I'VE BEEN THERE. AND JUST ACROSS THE RAILROAD TRACKS, FROM THE LITTLE KNOLL WHERE SHE WAS BURIED IS THE SOVINE QUARRY. AND IT'S AS IF SHE WAS OVERLOOKING HIM AND THEN, IN THAT PERIOD, HE WOULD STOP BY. THE NAZIS HAD CLOSED DOWN THE CHURCHES IN KRAKOW BUT NOT THE CONVENT CHURCH. AND HE WOULD GO THERE FOR ADORATION ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK, FOR A VISIT. THIS WAS PART OF HIS DAILY ROUTINE. SO, WHAT SHE DID, HE THEN JOINED IN. AND WE SEE THE IMPACT. >> AND WE HAVE HIM IN THE BOOK BECAUSE IT WAS PART OF HIS PONTIFICATE. DIVINE MERCY WAS MAJOR PART OF HIS PONTIFICATE. SHE'S GOING TO BE A DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH, FATHER. SO, IT WAS JUST AN HONOR. I HAVE TO SAY THIS, FATHER, THIS IS A TRILOGY THAT WE DID. ST. FAUSTINA PRAYER BOOK FOR THE HOLY SOULS. AND LAST YEAR, THIS VERY DAY, FAME OUT WITH THE PRAYER BOOK FOR CONVERSION OF SINNERS, ST. FAUSTINA. AND THAT BOOK HAS SOLD 12,000 COPIES. >> AND THERE'S A FEW MORE SINNERS THAN THAT, WE NEED TO GET THAT OUT THERE MORE. >> OKAY. AND THEN WE CAME UP WITH ADORATION BECAUSE IT WAS ONE AREA IN THE DIARY THAT FATHER DAN CAMERON SHARED WITH ME THAT WAS NOT GLEANED OUT. SO, I HAVE TO SAY THIS, FATHER, I'VE DONE 11 BOOKS. THIS WAS THE MOST EXQUISITE, MOST POWERFUL, TOUCHING BOOKS, ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS I'VE DONE. I'VE BEEN EXTREMELY MOVED BY IT. AND I WISH I HAD ONE FOR EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD BECAUSE OF THE WRITINGS, THE ORIGINAL PRAYERS, ALL TIED IN WITH ADORATION AND THE POWER OF IT. WE'LL TALK ABOUT THE BENEFITS AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF IT. >> Fr. Pacwa: ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL THINGS THAT YOU SAID TO ME EARLIER, I THINK, LAST NIGHT, AT DINNER. YOU BRING THIS BOOK WITH YOU TO YOUR HOLY HOUR BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO MEDITATE AND REMIND YOURSELF ON THE THINGS THAT ST. FAUSTINA SAID. IT'S NOT, JUST, YEAH, I CRANK OUT THE BOOKS AND NO. IT'S REALLY A SOURCE OF MEDITATION FOR YOU? >> IT HAD SUCH AN IMPACT ON ME, FATHER. I HAD TO GIVE A TALK FOR THE FIRST TIME. I GOT CHOKED UP TALKING ABOUT THIS. AND HOW SHE ADORED AND WHO SHE ADORED WITH AND WHAT OUR LADY, YOU KNOW, SHE SAID, YOU HAVE TO GET CLOSE TO JESUS, HER SON, HAVE YOU TO GET CLOSE TO OUR LADY. SO, WE HAVE A WHOLE SECTION THERE. SHE HAD DARK NIGHTS OF THE SOUL, FATHER. I WAS FINDING IT THROUGH THE DIARY. AND I'M THINKING, OH, THERE WERE A LOT OF DARK NIGHTS. AND I THOUGHT, WHAT DO WE DO WITH DARK NIGHTS. WE HAVE ADORATION FOR DARK NIGHTS. AND I'M READING IT. AND I SAID, SHE'S IN THE DARK NIGHT, HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF THE DARK NIGHT. SHE HAD ACTS OF TRUST. BEAUTIFUL PRAYERS TO HELP A PERSON, YOU KNOW, TO PRAY AND TO INTERCEDE AND ASK GOD FOR INTERCESSION, BUT THE PRAYERS WERE SUPER, SUPER POWERFUL. AND THERE'S A, ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL THINGS THAT I FOUND, YOU WERE NOT AT THE SEMINARY, YOU WERE STUDYING -- >> DOWN IN CHICAGO NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO. >> Guest: OKAY. BUT BUT I WAS THERE AT THE SEMINARY AND SHELVES OF ADORATION BOOKS, FANTASTIC. BUT NOTHING THROUGH THE EYES OF FAUSTINA AND THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME THAT I DIDN'T SEE ANYWHERE ELSE. WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU CAN'T GO TO ADORATION. I WAS WORRIED BECAUSE I KNEW WE WERE GOING TO MEET DOWN THE ROAD BECAUSE I WENT TO FAUSTINA AND I SAID, WHAT DO YOU DO? WE'VE GOT PEOPLE HOMEBOUND, PEOPLE THAT HAVE CHILDREN, PEOPLE HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITIES. WE HAVE PEOPLE WHERE THERE'S NO ADORATION. HOW DO YOU, YOU KNOW, CAPTURE THOSE PEOPLE. AND I'M POURING THROUGH THE DIARY, I PRAYED TO HER AND TALKED TO HER EVERYDAY. WE HAVE A RELIC AT THE CATHEDRAL RIGHT THERE AT THE MONSTRANCE. AND I PRAYED TO HER, I'M STUCK, WHAT DO I DO. WELL, FATHER IN THE DIARY, SHE TOOK WHAT YOU CALL SPIRITUAL FLIGHTS. MANY TIMES, SHE WAS VERY FRAIL AND HER HEALTH REALLY KEPT HER FRAIL AND FRAGILE. SO, MANY TIMES SHE WAS IN HER ROOM. AND WHAT SHE DID, AND SHE CALLED IT SPIRITUAL FLIGHTS. SHE TOOK MENTAL FLIGHTS TO THE CHAPEL TOWARD THE DIRECTION OF WHERE THE CHAPEL WAS. SHE PRAYED TOWARD HIM. THEN, I FIND OUT THAT PADRE PIO AND BLESSED ALEXANDER COSTA MANY SAINTS DID THIS AND IN FACT, SOME OF THE SAINTS ACTUALLY REQUESTED A CELL, THEIR ROOM THAT FACED THE CHAPEL SO THEY COULD ADORE SPIRITUAL ADORATION IF THEY COULDN'T GET TO A CHURCH AND ADORE. SO, THIS SPIRITUAL ADORATION ANSWERED THE QUESTION FOR THOSE THAT ARE UNABLE TO ADORE. YOU COULD HAVE YOUR OWN ADORATION CHAPEL AT HOME. >> EXACTLY. AND SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN WE SHOW, OF COURSE, BROADCAST THE MASS EVERYDAY, YOU CAN SORT OF IMAGINE YOURSELF BEING THERE WITH US. AND ALSO, WHEN WE HAVE BENEDICTION AND SUCH, WE WANT THAT YOU CAN HAVE IT AND PRAY WITH US AS WELL. WE HAVE TO TAKE A BREAK AND WE'LL COME BACK FOR YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS AND AS WELL AS THOSE OF OUR STUDIO AUDIENCE. PLEASE, STAY WITH US! [APPLAUSE] ♪ ♪ [APPLAUSE] >> Fr. Pacwa: ALL RIGHT. YOU READY FOR SOME QUESTIONS? OKAY. LET'S START OFF WITH A CALLER. HELLO? >> Voice: HI. FATHER MITCH, FATHER CHRIS GREETINGS FROM THE SHRINE OF THE, NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE DIVINE MERCY. I WANTED TO CALL AND SAY HELLO TO SUSAN, SHE'S A WONDERFUL FRIEND TO OUR COMMUNITY, THE WONDERFUL FATHERS. AND SUSAN, I GOT MY NBA AT MICHIGAN AND WE ARE THE ONES THAT BEAT YOUR RAMBLERS. AM I GOING TO HAVE TO SPEND ANY EXTRA TIME IN PURGATORY? >> Fr. Pacwa: I'M SURE NO TIME IN PURGATORY. YOU MAY HAVE TO DEAL WITH ME NEXT TIME YOU ARE DOWN HERE. THAT'S ANOTHER ISSUE! >> Voice: WELL, VERY GOOD. I WANTED TO QUICKLY MENTION SOMETHING. WE REALLY ENJOYED SUSAN'S BOOK, THE IMPORTANCE OF ADORATION AND I WAS, TOO, ONE OF THE ONES THAT LIKED THE CHAPTER ON SILENCE. BUT I WANTED TO MAKE ONE COMMENT AND QUESTION IF I MAY. SUSAN, ACTUALLY, WE TALK ABOUT NOISE. BUT YOU KNOW, WE CAN BE JUST AS NOISY IN ADORATION. AND THAT'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT YOUR BOOK. I LOVE ABOUT THAT CHAPTER. I WANTED TO POINT OUT TO THE PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, I LEARNED IN NOVITIATE HOW TO SLOW THAT DOWN. I USED TO RAISE IN FRONT OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT AND I HAD ALL OF THESE PRAYERS TO RECITE, LITANIES TO READ, AND PRAYERS VOCALLY TO DO. AND I ENDED UP DOING ALL OF THE TALKING. AND SO, WE CAN ALSO BE A LITTLE BIT NOISY IN ADORATION IF WE'RE HURRY AND TALKING TOO MUCH. AND THAT SILENCE AS YOU MENTIONED, IN THE CHAPTER IS SO BEAUTIFUL. BUT EVEN IN ADORATION NOT TO DO ALL OF THE TALKING, BUT TO BE SILENT AS WELL. >> Guest: AND I LIKE WHAT CARDINAL SARAH WROTE ABOUT IT. SILENCE IS NECESSARY FOR A TRUE SACRAMENTAL LIFE. IT LEADS TO ADORATION, A PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH THE LIVING GOD. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND I THINK THAT FATHER HAS A VERY GOOD POINT. I THINK THAT SOMEBODY FROM VILLANOVA WHO SAID THIS. SOMETHING, FATHER. LOTS OF TIME PEOPLE WILL BE READING SO MANY DIFFERENT BOOKS. AND GO THROUGH ALL THESE PRAYERS AND READ THIS, ONE PERSON TOLD ME, I GOT TO READ THIS, THIS. AND YOU DON'T LISTEN TO WHAT CHRIST IS SAYING TO YOU. THAT IS, THAT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. AND I WROTE A BOOK CALLED, HOW TO LISTEN WHEN GOD IS SPEAKING. WE NEED TO LEARN THAT TOO. >> Guest: I JUST READ THAT. THAT'S THE ONE ON DISCERNMENT. A FEW DAYS AGO AND IT'S VERY GOOD. YOU HAVE THE PURGATORY LADY SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR THAT ONE. >> Fr. Pacwa: GOOD. HOPEFULLY HELP ME GET OUT OF PURGATORY. MA'AM, WHERE ARE YOU FROM? >> Voice: I LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM. AND I'M A MEMBER OF THE OUR LADY OF THE VALLEY CHURCH. MY QUESTION TO YOUR LOVELY GUEST, AND ENJOY HER ENTHUSIASM. AND I ENJOY YOUR PROGRAM WHICH IS SO INFORMATIVE. WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU GIVE US TO MOTIVATE AND ENCOURAGE OUR YOUNGER GENERATION TO WANT AND TO PRAY IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. CHURCHES HAVE 40 DEVOTIONS HERE IN ALABAMA, DAILY, WEEKLY MAYBE HOLY HOURS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO US, THAT WE CAN SAY TO THEM? THEY WILL BE MARRIED SOME DAY AND HAVE A FAMILY AND PASS THIS ON TO THEM. >> Guest: WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I THINK, FATHER, IT STARTS WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG. IT STARTS IN THE FAMILY. IT BEGINS WITH THE PARENTS. TAKING THEM TO CHURCH. BRINGING THEM TO ADORATION. I MEAN, THEY MAY BE LITTLE TYKES BUT FIVE MINUTES IN ADORATION IS NOT GOING TO MAKE A LOT OF NOISE. BUT I THINK THAT'S WHERE WE BEGIN IS AT HOME. >> Fr. Pacwa: THAT'S A VERY IMPORTANT THING. ALSO, THERE WAS A MOVEMENT THAT STARTED IN DALLAS BACK IN THE 1990's, WHEN I WAS STILL LIVING THERE. I THINK IT WAS CALLED YOUTH 2000. REMEMBER THAT? >> Guest: YES, I DO. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND THAT MOVEMENT WAS VERY POWERFUL. IT BROUGHT YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR A RETREAT. A WEEKEND RETREAT THAT FOCUSED ON ADORATION AND CONFESSION. AND THEY HAD DONE THAT VERY WELL. I KNOW THAT AT STEUBENVILLE, YOU GO THERE AND SOME OF THE OTHER CATHOLIC COLLEGES THAT YOU GO TO THE EUCHARISTIC CHAPEL AND THERE'S PEOPLE THERE ALL THE TIME. A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE DO TRY TO DISTRACT THEMSELVES WITH THE COMPUTER AND OFTENTIMES MAYBE LOOKING AT THINGS THAT ARE NOT GOOD FOR THEM AT ALL. THEY ARE ADDICTIVE EVEN. AND YOU ALSO HAVE A LOT OF OTHER PROBLEMS. BUT THIS IS A WAY TO LET THEM ENTER INTO BEING WITH CHRIST ALONE. I HAVE SEEN IT NOT ONLY WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE BUT JUST BEING THERE WITH JESUS AND LEARNING TO TALK TO HIM. AND ALSO, A FRIEND OF MINE, IN ATLANTA, HE WAS HIMSELF A DRUG ADDICT AND NOW HE DOES A LOT OF WORK WITH DRUG ADDICTS. HE DOESN'T SAY, OH, YEAH, YOU GOT TO GO TO CONFESSION AND THEN GO TO MASS. NO. HE TAKES THEM TO THE BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL AT THE CATHEDRAL IN DOWNTOWN ATLANTA. AND HE JUST SITS WITH THEM. HE SITS WITH THEM LIKE YOU SAID, PARENTS NEED TO DO IT WITH THEIR CHILDREN. HE SITS WITH THE DRUG ADDICTS. AND THEN HE LET'S JESUS CONVERT THEM. AND THAT'S ONE OF THE KEY THINGS. >> WE HAVE SOMETHING IN CHICAGO THAT PRETTY OFTEN THAT COMES TO THE CATHEDRAL CALLED NIGHT FEVER. HAVE YOU HEARD OF THAT? YEAH, IT'S ADORATION FROM EARLY EVENING UNTIL MIDNIGHT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. I LIKE THE TITLE OF IT. NIGHT FEVER. >> Fr. Pacwa: COOL. MA'AM? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? >> Voice: I'M FROM CHICAGO A SUBURB OF CHICAGO. AND I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS. ONE FOR SUSAN. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT SHE LEARNED FROM THE BOOK SHE WROTE. AND FATHER, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE ORIGINS OF ADORATION AND CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY. >> Fr. Pacwa: SURE. >> Guest: OKAY. THIS IS PROFOUND WHAT I LEARNED. THERE WERE THREE THINGS THAT I LEARNED, THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. ADORATION AS INTERCESSORY POWER. SHE PRAYED ON THURSDAY AND SHE PRAYED FOR SPECIFIC GROUPS. SPECIAL ATTENTIONS AND THAT MOVED ME. I WANTED TO CAPTURE THAT PRAYED FOR HER SISTER WANDA. WANDA WAS MEETING WITH HER AND WENT OFF THE DEEP END. SHE WAS TELLING FAUSTINA HER PLANS AND FAUSTINA WAS BESIDE HERSELF BECAUSE IT WAS GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. AND WHAT SHE DID, SHE WENT TO ADORATION AND SHE INTERCEDED FOR HER. AND IN ADORATION, SHE WOULD PRAY THE ROSARY, DO THE CHAPLET AND OF COURSE, SHE RECEIVED COMMUNION, MADE NOVENAS, AND SHE WAS CONSTANTLY BEFORE OUR LORD. THIS IS WHAT SHE SAID, NUDGING HIM, NUDGING HIM TO HELP HER SISTER WANDA. AND SHE SAID, WE SHOULD NUDGE GOD, PUSH HIM AND CONSTANTLY BE PERSISTENT IN INTERCEDING FOR OUR LOVED ONES. THAT'S WHAT SHE DID FOR WANDA. WANDA TURNED AROUND. ALSO, THERE'S A CONSEQUENCE THAT I READ ABOUT, IN ADORATION. THE CONSEQUENCE WAS, SHE WAS ADORING AND THE DEMONS APPEARED TO HER. SHE WERE FURIOUS AND THEY WANTED TO, QUOTE, TEAR HER TO PIECES BECAUSE SHE WAS INTERCEDING FOR THE CONVERSION OF SINNERS. AND IT SNATCHED SOULS FROM THEM FOR HEAVEN. THAT'S HOW POWERFUL ADORATION, THE INTERCESSORY POWER WE HAVE. SHE HAD SEVERAL OTHER GROUPS, PRAYED FOR THE COUNTRY, THE SICK AND THE SUFFERING. SHE PRAYED FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY. SO, INTERCESSORY PRAYER POWER IS ONE OF THE BIG THINGS THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME. AND THE SECOND, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN ADORATION. YOU ARE PRAYING WITH THE ANGELS, OUR LADY, PRAYING WITH THE SAINTS AND THE SOULS IN PURGATORY. AND FAUSTINA UNITED HER PRAYERS WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE THE ONES THAT ADORE IN A PERFECT WAY. AND THEN, THIRD, I DISCOVERED THAT JESUS CALLS US TO HIM. HE CALLS US TO HIM. AND SO, SHE MENTIONED THAT, THAT THERE WAS A TIME WHEN SHE FORGET HER HOUR AND HE APPEARED TO HER AND HE SAID, WHERE WERE YOU. AND SO, HE CALLS US TO HIM. WHY? BECAUSE HE CREATED US. HE CREATED US FOR HIMSELF. HE COULD HAVE HAD A MILLION DIFFERENT FATHER MITCH PACWAS, AND HE CREATED YOU AND HE CREATED US TO BE WITH HIM ALL ETERNITY. THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A GAZILLION OTHER SOULS AND HE CHOSE YOU AND HE CHOSE ME, AND HE CHOSES YOU. AND SHE HAD A CONVERSATION, AND SHE SAID I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU AND HE SAID I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU. AND SHE SAID, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ABOUT? AND HE SAID, I'M THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE WITH ME ALL ETERNITY. THAT'S ANOTHER THING. THE LOVE HE HAS FOR US. THAT'S THE THREE KEY THINGS THAT JUMPED OUT AT ME. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND TO ANSWER THE OTHER QUESTION, ABOUT WHEN ADORATION, BENEDICTION AND CORPUS CHRISTI GOT STARTED. IT WAS IN REACTION TO A HERESY TAUGHT BY A DEACON FROM FRANCE, BARREN GARIUS IN LATIN, IN THE 1050'S, HE WAS THE FIRST THEOLOGIAN TO EVER DENY THE REAL PRESENCE OF CHRIST IN THE EUCHARIST. AND EVENTUALLY, DURING, THE DEBATE OF FRENCH PRIEST HE CAME UP WITH THE TERM TRANSUBSTANTIATION AND TO RESPOND TO HIM. HE UNDERSTOOD IT THEN. HE ACCEPTED THE CATHOLIC FAITH AND CAME BACK. BUT IN RESPONSE, BECAUSE IT DID CAUSE A STIR, THAT EUCHARISTIC ADORATION WAS THE ANTIDOTE TO HIS HERESY. >> Voice: DID SOMETHING HAPPEN IN SPAIN? I READ SOMETHING ABOUT HOW ADORATION, SOMETHING CAME OUT OF A CATHEDRAL IN SPAIN WHERE THERE WERE PORTABLE TABERNACLES. AND THE REASON PART OF THE THING, THE MONKS WOULD PROCESS TO THE DYING AND THAT WAS PART OF THAT BEGINNING OF ADORATION? >> Fr. Pacwa: YEAH, THAT PART I DON'T KNOW. ALL RIGHT. NOW, WE HAVE PAUL MCKIBBON ON THE PHONE. HELLO. >> Voice: HELLO, FATHER, AND HELLO, SUSAN. IT'S GOOD TO BE WITH YOU TONIGHT. >> NOW, YOU ARE THE EDITOR OF CATHOLIC DIGEST, IS THAT CORRECT? >> Voice: YES, I AM, SIR. >> Fr. Pacwa: YEAH. AND YOU PUT SUSAN ON THE COVER! >> Voice: YEAH, SHE WAS ON NOVEMBER 2017 COVER. >> Fr. Pacwa: WAS SHE WANTED FOR SOMETHING? IN CHICAGO THAT'S USUALLY THE REASON! >> Voice: WE DID A WONDERFUL INTERVIEW WITH HER ABOUT THE BOOK, PURGATORY AND WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT TONIGHT. IT WAS A WONDERFUL STORY THAT WE HAD. AND YOU CAN FIND THAT ON OUR WEB SITE, ON CATHOLIC DIGEST.COM. >> Fr. Pacwa: WELL, GREAT. CONGRATULATIONS SUSAN. I'M SURE THAT THAT WAS A GOOD ARTICLE MAKING KNOWN A LOT OF THE WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING. >> Fr. Pacwa: THERE'S MORE NEWS, FATHER. PAUL, ARE YOU THERE? >> Voice: WELL, ON THE JUNE COVER. >> Fr. Pacwa: SHE'LL BE ON THAT TOO? >> Voice: NO, YOU ARE. >> Fr. Pacwa: I AM? WAIT A MINUTE! NOW, WHAT AM I WANTED FOR? NOW, WHAT DID I DO THIS TIME? >> Voice: WELL, AT THE NETWORK, THEY HAD NOT TOLD YOU THAT, RIGHT? >> Fr. Pacwa: NO. NO. I HAD NO IDEA! [LAUGHTER] NOW I FEEL LIKE RICKY. >> Voice: WELL, YOU GAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF OUR OTHER WRITERS ABOUT YOUR BOOK, SAVED. >> Fr. Pacwa: OH, OKAY. ALL RIGHT. >> Voice: A BIBLE STUDY GUIDE FOR CATHOLICS. >> Fr. Pacwa: RIGHT. RIGHT. RIGHT. OKAY. WELL, THAT'S INTERESTING. >> Guest: CONGRATULATIONS. >> Voice: YEAH, CONGRATULATIONS, FATHER. >> Fr. Pacwa: I'VE NEVER BEEN A COVER PHOTO ON ANYTHING. THE ONLY PICTURES I KNOW OF ARE AT THE POST OFFICE. BUT THAT'S SOMETHING ELSE. >> Guest: YOU CAN WALL PAPER YOUR LIVING ROOM WITH IT NOW, FATHER. >> Fr. Pacwa: OH, GREAT. WELL, THAT'S A REAL HONOR, THANK YOU. A SHOCK. BUT AN HONOR. THANK YOU FOR CALLING. WE APPRECIATE THAT. NOW, WE HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION FROM THE STUDIO AUDIENCE. MA'AM, WHERE ARE YOU FROM? EWTN. OKAY. >> Voice: I LIVE HERE. JUST MENTIONING PURGATORY. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ADORATION AND PURGATORY? >> WELL, THERE IS A CONNECTION OR I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS BOOK IF THERE WAS NOT A CONNECTION. BUT IN ADORATION, WE ACT AS MEDIATORS FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY, INTERCESSORS, IMPLORING OUR LORD TO GIVE THEM RELIEF THROUGH ADORATION. AND IN FACT, FROM THE HOST, THE SACRED HOST, FATHER, STREAMS OF ALLEVIATING GRACE GLOW INTO PURGATORY GIVING THEM RELIEF. IN FACT, FATHER, IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO WASHINGTON, D.C. OR IN SOME OF THE CHURCHES IN CHICAGO, AT THE BASE OF THE ALTAR ARE RELIEFS OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY RAISING THEIR HAND UP TOWARD THE ALTAR. >> Fr. Pacwa: AND SOMETIMES THE ALTARS ARE DEDICATED TO THE POOR SOULS IN PURGATORY, ST. MICHAEL'S OVER IN FOURTH AVENUE. >> RIGHT. IT'S ON ONE OF THE COVERS OF MY BOOK. >> I LOVE THAT ALTAR. IT'S A BAS RELIEF OF THE POOR SOULS. I LOVE THAT. IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE IMAGES. >> MINE TOO. SO, WE ACT AS MEDIATORS FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY IN ADORATION. AND OF COURSE, WHEN YOU DO ADORATION FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY, YOU GAIN AN INDULGENCE AS WELL. >> OKAY. LET'S TAKE ANOTHER CALL. HELLO, FATHER MITCH AND SUSAN. >> Fr. Pacwa: WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU THIS EVENING? >> Voice: I HAVE A QUESTION. WE JUST STARTED DOING THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS AND WE STARTED THAT BEFORE LENT AND HAVE CONTINUED THROUGH LENT AND EASTER. WE'RE LOVING IT. WE'RE SAYING OUR PRAYERS IN FRONT OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT DURING HOLY HOURS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT? >> I THINK IT'S FANTASTIC. >> Fr. Pacwa: I DO IT EVERYDAY. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DO. THAT'S HOW I START OFF MY HOLY HOUR. SO FOLKS UNDERSTAND, LITURGY OF THE HOURS IS A COLLECTION OF PSALMS AND READINGS FROM SCRIPTURE. AND IN THE ROMAN RITE, THEY ALSO INCLUDE READINGS FROM THE SAINTS. AND IT'S SET UP FOR MORNING TIME. MIDDAY PRAYERS. AND EVENING PRAYER. AND THEN, NIGHTTIME PRAYER. I PRAY THE MARONITE LITURGY OF THE HOURS. SO, I DO MORNING, EVENING AND NIGHT. SO, WE DO THAT TO SANCTIFY THE DAY. THAT'S WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THE PRAYERS ARE. DOING IT BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IS WONDERFUL. I USE IT TO GET MY HOLY HOUR STARTED. >> AND WE HAVE IN THE BOOK, SEVEN TIPS FOR ADORATION, SEVEN OBSTACLES FOR ADORATION, ST. FAUSTINA'S INSIGHT. AND I'M CURIOUS, WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU DURING ADORATION? >> Fr. Pacwa: UHM, I DON'T KNOW. DEPENDS ON WHAT I HAVE BEEN UP TO. [LAUGHTER] I MEAN, YOU KNOW, IT'S CERTAINLY, I LIKE TO BEGIN WITH THE EUCHARIST AND THEN GO INTO LITURGY OF THE HOURS. AND THEN THE HOLY HOUR. YOU KNOW, I'M MAKING THE THANKSGIVING AFTER RECEIVING OUR LORD AS WELL AS SAYING THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS IN WHICH I'M PRAYING NOT ONLY WITH THE WHOLE CHURCH BUT I'M PRAYING FOR THE CHURCH. AS A PRIEST, I HAVE A MORAL OBLIGATION TO SAY THE OFFICE. WE TAKE A VOW TO DO SO, AT OUR ORDINATION TO THE DIACONATE. AND I MAKE THAT COMMITMENT. AND I'M INTERCEDING FOR THE CHURCH IN THAT. AND PART OF IT IS PETITIONS, AND OTHER PARTS ARE THE PSALMS. BUT THEN, YOU KNOW, THAT'S WHERE, LIKE JOHN PAUL, I GOT THE CLUE FROM HIM YEARS AGO. THAT'S WHERE I PRAY OVER WHAT I WRITE. MY BIBLE STUDIES AND SUCH. THAT'S A KEY ELEMENT. >> I'VE DONE THAT WITH THE BOOKS. I TAKE, FATHER, YOU KNOW, IT'S FUNNY. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING. YOU CAN JUST SIT THERE. AND I GET FLOODED AND I HAVE TO WRITE A LOT DOWN. WHAT I REALLY LIKE TOO WAS THE PART WHEN I SAID SHE HAD VARIOUS INTENTIONS THAT SHE PRAYED FOR, FATHER. ONE OF THE BIG ONES THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT, SHE PRAYED FOR PRIESTS AND NUNS. I WANTED TO SHARE THAT. THIS WAS VERY, VERY POWERFUL. THE LORD GAVE ME KNOWLEDGE OF HIS ANGER TOWARD MANKIND WHICH DESERVES TO HAVE THE DAYS SHORTENED BECAUSE OF THE SINS. BUT I LEARNED THAT THE WORLD'S EXISTENCE IS MAINTAINED BY CHOSEN SOULS. THAT'S THE RELIGIOUS ORDERS. WOE TO THE WORLD WHEN THERE WILL BE A LACK OF RELIGIOUS ORDERS. AND THEN, JESUS GOES ON AND HE SAYS TO HER, IN CONTRAST TOO SOULS THAT FILL MY HEART WITH JOY, A DEFENSE FOR THE WORLD BEFORE THE JUSTICE OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER, AND A MEANS OF OBTAINING MERCY FOR THE WORLD. THE LOVE AND SACRIFICE OF THESE SOULS SUSTAIN THE WORLD IN EXISTENCE. >> THE JEWISH RABBIS HAVE A VERY SIMILAR NOTION. THAT THERE ARE HOLY SOULS AROUND THE WORLD. IF THEY CEASE TO EXIST, THEN THEN THE WORLD WILL CEASE TO EXIST. AND IN THE MARONITE COMMUNITY, WHICH SAINT MARION WAS A HERMIT. AND WHEN THERE'S NO HERMIT, THE LAST ONE DIED, AND THEN THE CIVIL WAR BROKE OUT. AND IT STOPPED WHEN SOMEBODY WENT OUT TO THE HERMITAGE AND THE HERMITS ARE VERY KEY. >> VERY CRITICAL. >> AND WE HAVE ONE LAST QUESTION. JUST A FEW SECONDS. >> SUSAN, YOU MENTIONED ADORATION FOR THE HOME BOUND. WOULD YOU ELABORATE ON THAT, PLEASE. >> VERY EASY. WE HAVE SPIRITUAL ADORATION IN THE BOOK. MEANING, IF YOU CAN'T GET TO ADORATION, WE HAVE A SPECIAL SECTION CALLED SPIRITUAL ADORATION AT HOME. WHAT THE SAINTS DID, WHEN THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO GO TO ADORATION. WE HAVE SPECIAL PSALMS, TE DEUM AND THE WHOLE BOOK IS ADORATION. BUT THAT'S ONE THING THAT YOU CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE IN THE BOOK. >> IT'S PARALLEL TO MAKING AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION. WHEN YOU CAN'T RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION, YOU CAN MAKE A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION. CHRIST IS PRESENT THERE. GOOD TO BE THERE WITH THE BLESSED SACRAMENT. >> I PRAY RIGHT OUT MY WINDOW. ST. MICHAEL'S IS RIGHT OUT MY WINDOW AND I PRAY RIGHT THERE, FACING THERE. AND EVERYBODY CAN DO SPIRITUAL ADORATION. NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE. POPE FRANCIS WAS PRAYING IN THE DENTIST CHAIR I READ. >> I PRAY. I PRAY FOR THE DENTIST TOO! [LAUGHTER] OKAY. WE'RE OUT OF TIME. FLAT OUT OF TIME. AND I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. AND THANK YOU FOR WRITING THESE BOOKS. AND FOR HELPING US WITH ADORATION AND I BROUGHT A RELIC OF ST. FAUSTINA. I WANT TO BLESS YOU ALL. MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU, AND BY THE INTERCESSION OF ST. FAUSTINA BLESS YOU WITH HIS MERCY, ESPECIALLY ON THIS MERCY SUNDAY, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT, AMEN. YOU KNOW, WE CAN DO THE SHOWS WITH SUSAN AND EVERYBODY ELSE, ONLY BECAUSE THIS NETWORK IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOU AND MOTHER WAS INSPIRED TO HAVE YOU DO THIS, INSTEAD OF ADVERTISING. SO, PLEASE, KEEP US IN BETWEEN YOUR GAS BILL, ELECTRIC BILL, AND YOUR CABLE BILL. AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO PAY OUR BILLS TOO. GOD BLESS YOU AND THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] ♪
