[Music] as it is written in Isaiah my messenger ahead of you welcome to branch together I'm Darrin I'm one of the pastors and hosts around here and today we're reading chapter 10 in Paul's letter to the church at Corinth we call it Corinthians before we approach the word to see what God has for us today let's take a moment to pray God thank you for what you're teaching us through this book thank you Lord for the the call to righteousness the call to flee sexual immorality the call to flee idolatry in whatever way that looks in our lives I pray Lord that as we read these these practical words from Paul to the church I pray that you just make them real for us help us to hear you speaking through your word today God you are good I just take a moment to pause and I ask that whoever is dialed in today wherever they are god I just pray that you meet the needy I pray that you meet those who are hurting I pray that you lift up those who are broken god I pray that you'd break down those who are proud and challenge those who are complacent be what we need you to be lord help us to grow and maturity and to know you better in Jesus name Amen 1st Corinthians chapter 10 now I do not want you to be unaware brothers and sisters that our ancestors were all under the cloud all passed through the sea and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea they all ate the same spiritual food all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them and that rock was Christ nevertheless God was not pleased with most of them since they were struck down in the wilderness now these things took place as examples for us so that we will not desire evil things as they did don't become idolaters as some of them were as it is written the people sat down to eat and drink and got up to party let us not commit sexual immorality as some of them did and in a single day 23,000 people died let us not test Christ as some of them did and were destroyed by snakes and don't complain as some of them did and were killed by the destroyer these things happen to them as examples and they were written for our instruction on whom the end of the ages have come so whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall no temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity but God is faithful he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able but with the temptation he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to bear it so then my dear friends flee from idolatry I am speaking as to sensible people judge for yourselves what I am saying the cup of blessing that we bless is it not in the blood of Christ the bread that we break is it not a sharing in the body of Christ because there is one bread we who are many are one body since all of us share the one bread consider the people of Israel do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar what am I saying then that food sacrificed to idols is anything or that an idol is anything No do say that what they sacrifice they sacrificed to demons and not to God I do not want you to be participants with demons you cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons you cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of demons or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy are we stronger than he everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial everything is permissible but not everything builds up no one is to seek his own good but the good of the other person eat everything that is sold in the meat market without raising questions for the sake of conscience since the earth is the Lord's and all that is in it if any of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go eat everything that is set before you without raising questions for the sake of conscience but if someone says to you this food is from a sacrifice do not eat it out of consideration for the one who told you and for the sake of conscience I do not mean your own conscience but the other persons for why is my freedom judged by another person's conscience if I partake with Thanksgiving why am i criticized because of something for which I give thanks so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do do everything for the glory of God give no offense to Jews or Greeks or the Church of God just as I also try to please everyone in everything not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of many so that they may be saved so if you recall back to the previous couple chapters we've seen this theme that members of the body we as members of the body are to choose the way of love over the way of Liberty in verses 13 through fifth Paul picks right up with that he says everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial he goes on to basically repeat it and says everything is permissible but not everything builds up and then he then he gives very clear instruction he says no one is to seek his own good but the good of the other person this is in keeping with what we've been talking about for the last couple days if you have questions about that go back to chapter eight and and and see what we talked about there that sums up that idea pretty well now the other major movement in this chapter is the first section the up front where he warns the Corinthians based on Israel's past he tells them that they should not commit sexual immorality as some in Israel did remember that he says how in a single day 23,000 people died and remember how Israel tested Christ and some were destroyed by snakes he says and remember how they were complainers and the complainers were killed by quote the destroyer he tells them that these things should be regarded as instruction for them as examples for them he tells them that God isn't going to give them temptations that there's no way out of for them now some people read that verse and and they say that God won't give you more than you can handle that's not really what he's talking about here Paul's point here is that we have no excuse when it comes to sin that we have no excuse because God has not trapped us in irresistible temptation people both Israel and us we can choose to follow God we can choose to resist the sin that is in our in our way the temptation that's in our path here's the awesome part listen to this closely when we choose God's Way when we choose to resist temptation and to live faithfully for him this is what happens we grow in maturity and remember the picture Paul gave us in Chapter two of of of needing not just needing milk but needing solid food he says that when you're immature you need milk and you don't really get to know God but when you're mature you get the solid food you get the the good depth of Jesus in his word when we grow in maturity we move from milk to solid food when we choose to resist sin God opens the door for us to to know him better and knowing God better is the source of true and lasting joy and peace in this broken and hurting world my my prayer today is that is that you resist and I resists that we resist the sin crouching outside our door and that we can grow in maturity and taste the sweetness of knowing Christ more that's all for today we will see you all tomorrow but first I'm going to go ahead and read our memory verse I hope you're memorizing this along with us this is an incredibly important verse for us all right all Scripture is god-breathed and is useful for teaching rebuking correcting and training in righteousness second Timothy 3:16 [Music] you
