hello people Pokemon types are one of the fundamental building blocks of the franchise in this video I will attempt to explain the concepts and lore behind each Pokémon type this is not a video intended to explain the competitive viability of types and type combos but rather to try and understand what each Pokemon type represents and how game freak assigns them to Pokemon seeing as Pokemon types span a fairly large range of ideas and Concepts some of them will be a lot more straightforward than others also when I talk about the themes of a type I'm referring to General Trends rather than concrete rules and everything I say about the meaning of a type can have exceptions even if I don't always mention them with that out of the way I'd like to start with the first type category which I decided to call Elemental types these types tend to be pretty easy to understand Pokémon of these types simply have something to do with specific elements that are also seen in other media the fire type fire type Pokémon generally have fire as parts of their body can control and or create fire or have some sort of heat based powers the water type water type Pokémon have powers that allow them to manipulate and create water and are generally based on real life creatures that live in and around bodies of water these can range from fish like Pokémon to Pokemon based on amphibious animals that can live on land and in the water there are exceptions like rapid Striker Shifu a Pokemon that is water type because its fighting style mimics the movements of water but is not based on an animal associated with it there's also Pia a legendary water type Pokémon that isn't shown living in water or having much of an affinity towards it other than its connection to pearls and therefore seashells the grass type grass type Pokémon are plant-based this means that they are either sentient plant-like creatures or have plants or plant components as parts of their body however there are exceptions like Mo Rotom and tapu bulu where the Pokémon is not made of plants but rather seems to Simply have control over plants or an association with them it's also interesting to note that mushroom Pokémon are also given the grass type despite the fact that mushrooms are fungi and not plants the electric type another simple one these Pokemon have the ability to manipulate and or regenerate electricity as you might expect Electric types are also tend to have high speed stats and are often associated with agility and quickness the ice type contrary to their name ice types aren't necessarily strictly limited to ice itself rather their themes and Powers more so have to do with the cold and the ability to freeze things and so many ice type moves revolve around other cold related things than just ice stuff like snow or cold winds for example ice type Pokemon tend to have control over ice be based on creatures that live in icy places or have ice or snow as part of their body the rock type and the ground type I decided to talk about these types in the same segment because the two go together thematically and I wanted to make the differences between the two as obvious as possible both Rock and ground revolve around the element of of Earth although different aspects of it rock types tend to have rocks Gems or crystals as components of their bodies or be made out of stone entirely and have control over rocks and stones although rock is an earthern material not all forms of Earth or soil fall under the rock type this is where the ground type comes in Earth substances like mud sand or dirt are associated with the ground type instead the ground type is also about the ability to control or create seismic activity or being good at digging while the rock type doesn't inherently relate to the Earth itself but rather the material of stone regardless of where it's located a rock type may be made of something that comes from the Earth but unlike a ground type it does not necessarily have an affinity for the Earth itself in simpler terms the rock type is about the material of rock while the ground type is about Earth in general hope that makes sense the Steel type this type doesn't revolve around the steel allo specifically but rather metal in general similarly to rocks Steel type Pokémon are often partly or entirely made of metal or at least have metall like properties their powers tend to revolve around hitting cutting or bashing with a metal object or body part as opposed to shooting out metal or controlling it the Steel type is associated with high defenses and sturdiness the next type category I will discuss is one I call descriptive types instead of just being indicative of an element that a Pokemon's Powers revolve around descriptive types also indicate the kind of creature that the Pokemon is it'll make sense in a second the flying type flying type Pokemon are well Pokemon with the ability to fly float Glide or in some cases be really good at jumping what makes this type unique is that many flying type moves also revolve around the element of air and the ability to control wind this means that flying could technically also fit in the elemental types category the reason I chose to include it under descriptive types is because flying type Pokemon are Pokémon with a biology that enables them to be airborne so the type describes what kind of creature the poemon is there's also the fact that certain flying type moves pertain to bird Anatomy specifically and involve having a beak or simply being a bird there are very few Pokemon that are flying type just because they control winds mainly the forces of nature most of the time the type simply indicates that the Pokemon is based on a flying creature an inhabitant of the sky the bug type bug types are generally based on arthopods but most of the time they'll be based on insects specifically that's pretty much as deep as it gets their powers in moves revolve around buggy things like biting making webs or using other insect body parts the dragon type this is another weird one as the name suggests dragon type Pokémon are inspired by dragons but it's not always as simple as that many dragon type Pokémon don't obviously resemble dragons instead they look like other creatures with some dragon-like qualities also not every reptile Pokémon is dragon type which makes sense because not every lizard is a dragon the problem is that the division between dragon reptiles and non-dragon reptiles feels a bit arbitrary sometimes tornator is based on a turtle and is a dragon type but there's plenty of other Turtle Pokémon that aren't another example is heliolisk it's based on a lizard and it makes sense that it wouldn't be a dragon type but py Lazar along with its Paradox counterparts are also lizards but they do have the dragon type it seems to me like it comes down to fierceness if a reptile in Pokémon is fierce and powerful enough it's more likely to be given the dragon type of course something that applies to all type choices is game balancing and the fact that Pokemon can't have more than two types some Pokemon might be given certain types rather than others because the game they were introduced in needed a balanced type distribution but I'm getting distracted there's also the unique case of Reggie Drago a Pokemon that is definitely not a dragon but is dragon type because it's made of dragon energy and so still possesses dragon type properties Dragon type moves and Powers revolve around using dragon body parts like claws or tails but also the ability to shoot out IG give us energy the Ghost type Pokémon of this type are usually ghostlike beings spectral entities that don't always have obvious parallels to real life creatures they tend to be spooky and shadowy and in some cases resemble inanimate objects now every type can potentially have Pokemon that are based on objects but this is most commonly seen in the Ghost type usually in reference to an item being possessed and coming to life there are however also Ghost type Pokemon that aren't a ghost themselves but rather have ghostly powers Ghost types generally have abilities that involve manipulating Shadows or shadowy energy the final and most bizarre type category I'll explain is miscellaneous types these are types that aren in traditional elements but also don't inherently describe what kind of creature a Pokemon is the poison type definitely the most straightforward type in the miscellaneous category poison types have the ability to create and control poison toxins or Venom they generate substances that cause harm to other Pokémon I could have included poison in the elemental type category because it indicates what kind of powers a Pokemon has but I decided not to because poison isn't traditionally an element in other pieces of media it's also interesting that poison is probably the most commonly used type by antagonist in Pokémon or at the very least it's associated with evil teams poison type Pokémon are often based on venomous or poisonous creatures from The Real World the fighting type this type might sound a little confusing at first after all every Pokemon can be used in battle they can all fight well the fighting type is more so about hand-to-hand combat and martial arts in other words fighting type Pokemon use their bodies for combat the most and have an affinity for masterful fighting techniques they're generally all about physical strength because so many fighting types are inspired by Real Life Martial Arts lots of them are humanoid more so than the average type the dark type in spite of its English name the dark type doesn't have much to do with literal Darkness aside from a few nocturnal dark types and instead it refers to metaphorical Darkness Darkness in the soul and evilness dark type Pokemon tend to be mean-spirited used underhanded tactics or show aggression I wouldn't say any Pokemon is inherently evil but dark type Pokemon generally exhibit behavioral patterns that humans would deem as negative in the context of our society they tend to be Hunters thieves or tricksters and their powers revolve around using dirty moves or manipulating dark energy this type is unique because it tells us more about a Pokemon's demeanor rather than its power or Anatomy the psychic type A type that's all about the Mind psychic type Pokemon tend to be described as more intelligent or having a heightened perception of reality the psychic type has a mystical quality and is sometimes also associated with magic Pokemon of this type tend to have powers that they activate using their minds and they attack using psychic energy from their brains in a way the type is the antithesis of the physically oriented fighting type interestingly Pokémon that have a connection to space or celestial bodies are usually psychic type as well probably in reference to astrology or the concept of aliens who are smarter than humans the fairy type not unlike the psychic type the fairy type is also associated with magic though in a different way this type is more about the Whimsical fairy tale kind of magic but also magical fairy tale creatures some fairy type Pokémon are based on creatures of myth like Pixies imps or unicorns but a big part of the theming of the fairy type is simply cuteness with many though not all fairy types being small or having traditional feminine or girly features there are of course exceptions the fairy type also has a soft association with light and or Sparkles and some fairy type moves involve creating just that if the dark type is the evil type then the fairy type is the closest thing to a goodness type the normal type despite what the name may suggest I believe that the normal type may be the hardest one to nail down completely because it represents more than just one or two things I kept it for the end because I think that knowing my approach to understanding types will help explain this one better first of all the normal type is about being unremarkable many Pokémon get the normal type because they are conceptually very close to just plain old real life animals and don't have many fantasy elements in their design most of the time this category of normal types is made up of bird and mammal Pokémon the next theme of the normal type is not fitting in with any other types there are Pokémon like the Wismer line who are unlike anything in the real world but since their main power is sound and there is no type that could reflect that they get the normal Type legendary Pokemon like archus salii and trapos are also sort of like that because they have gimmicks where they can change type and their concept revolves around that their base forms would only make sense to be normal because no type represents the concept of changing types the final and most abstract branch of the normal type is what I call the undescribed normal Factor there are a select few Pokémon that do not strongly resemble any real life creatures that do fit into other types but get the normal type slapped on for ambiguous reasons Pokemon like Granda and huan Zoro could realistically just be pure dragon and pure ghost respectively but perhaps because if they're washed out colors or for the sake of a unique type combo they are also normal type well that was every type explained to the best of my abilities except for the stellar and question mark types of course keep in mind that this is just my own interpretation of types and their themes and it's okay if you disagree thanks for watching
