flight chops is all about sharing flying experiences all right okay cool yeah i'm feeling a little sick oh i heard that yeah no worries and we threw a heck of a lot at my buddy blake on this one really feel the plane right yeah it's cool and that's exactly why people like this plane because it just it kind of puts that stuff this front and center and just forces you to work on it flying tailwheel has made me a better pilot in almost every quantifiable way totally see now why they say this makes you a better pilot with sticker rudder yeah you see it right yes absolutely okay so you just did some basic stuff in the tabria yep and what are you feeling this is a little more intimidating yeah i know that was like a tricycle i guess this is like a motorcycle that would be a good analogy yeah let's go to the airplane sitting there parked beside it yeah i know right from the minivan to like the crotch rocket that saves me doing a voiceover there you go this one is a story within a story [Music] my friend blake bought an airplane and asked me to go halfway across the country to fly at home with him and i couldn't pass that up blake has been a pilot buddy since way before flight chops he's not yet instrument rated so this was a perfect mission for me to take on with my newly acquired ifr ticket with a six-pack panel and no certified gps i was glad to have four flight and a quirky original autopilot from 1971. this is a multi-part series with a few episodes already published and more to come when we reached winnipeg the midpoint of the trip i was definitely ready for a break so we stopped in to see a good friend and mentor and to get blake a solid introduction to tailwheel flying and who better to show him the ropes than luke penner luke is the chief instructor at harv's air he's been a huge part of my advanced halo and aerobatics training we recently shared a multi-part series covering learning the sportsman competitive sequence good morning blake so i understand we're gonna do your first tailwheel flight today that's right i'm excited right on yeah we've spoken a little bit about your flying background most of my hours are on 172. okay so yeah well we'll get into this this morning and if that goes well steve says we can maybe put you in the extra after that yeah just get you familiar with some of the differences in tailwheel flying like we'll go through takeoff procedures differences in taxiing and then of course landings get comfortable with the airplane okay do some basic air work and do some macro yes i'm nervous a little bit it's the first time doing anything that's aerobatic related at all i'm excited i want to go upside down so i'm your first time upside down yeah that's pretty cool yeah yeah yeah yeah this is going to be a lot for a first day of tailwheel training but blake was a good sport and open to sharing the vulnerability of the process [Music] simply learning how to work the pedals requires a whole new approach compared to nose wheel flying the important thing is that we don't accidentally push the brakes when we're you know taking off or landing or something like that i wouldn't recommend being like that because it's going to be really hard to access the brakes when you need them so what i would do is i would use this part of my foot exactly and then that way you can pivot your toes back so that you're not on the brakes yeah but then you can just pivot forward if you need them right okay you don't need to change your foot position at all gotcha yep i'm going to trim the standard procedures and checklists out of this episode so that we can focus on the unique experiences of a new talia pilot check all clear and start and that sight picture that you're going to be seeing when you're taxiing around absorb all that visual information because when you're landing later on that's what we're going to be shooting for in terms of a three-point landing attitude right it's going to be about that taxi attitude okay so just kind of soak that in i think we should be good so you can go ahead and pull the stick all the way in your stomach you can tax in terms of taxi you don't want to have your stick all the way back so it's going to be a control stick instead of the yolk that you're used to yeah and my guess is by the end of the morning you're going to prefer the stick over the yolk okay cool yeah it looks like fun i don't know i've never flown anything with a stick before so i think it's a little more sporty and yeah yeah i think it just feels right i would do that it was cool to watch blake taxi past the cherokee six i hope to inspire more pilots to get into tail wheel flying even if it's not something you see yourself doing regularly i guarantee you it will make you better how should you feel so far just pointing the nose in the direction and then not being able to see like right in front of me yeah kind of pick a nice clean area there's no gravel we can do a run up there all right cool get a little more break and then you'll uh there you go oh there we go and you can turn it on the time so again skip and checklist let's just get these guys flying all right run up checklist complete all right let's line up and we'll we won't back right we'll just use the runway right from here yep that traffic ahead is airborne so i'm expecting like the tail to come up first yeah and then not to get freaked out by that because it's yeah i feel like you're gonna go nose over maybe i guess you're gonna be totally in control of of how that tail comes off the ground so we're actually purposely doing that with how we move the stick forward okay get yourself lined up make sure your feet are not on the brakes and let's go the stick's going to be fully out and then we're going to go smoothly full power yeah once we have full power we're going to bring the stick smoothly forward we don't need to rush that just forward a little bit past neutral you're going to start to feel it lift in the back okay wait let's stick forward let's move forward push push push right there and then at that point those instincts are going to kick in like oh like yeah i don't like the way this feels yeah don't be alarmed you can let that tail wheel come up a good you know eight inches nine inches or so i'll i'll be coaching you through that of course a little quicker on your feet and rotate oh yeah and we're flying i was at seven out of ten basically it was pretty typical yeah okay yeah you just gotta relax on your feet a little bit more you're you're pretty stiff yeah just kind of relax your feet all right okay so how'd you like that first takeoff that was it was good it was a little uh a little squirrely a bit but it was fine i didn't feel unsafe good i didn't feel like i was out of control it was just got to be lighter on the pedals what i thought was being in control was actually making it worse and we'll just uh maintain runway header yeah i think uh my biggest challenge is going to stay coordinated yeah you know that's everyone's challenge and that's exactly why people like this plane because it's just it kind of puts that stuff this front and center and just forces you to work on it so here we are in the practice area the spaces are so you can do some steep turns all right let's go for our steep turn to the right go for it okay there's no reference to that ball that's good and she can recover from that i travel to the left that's my bad side a little aggressive on the right around the entry okay there you go you can roll out on north you ever done a dutch roll like a roll about a point the goal here is to roll the airplane continuously left and right without turning have the rudder applied in harmony with our airlock movements in the same direction okay so we're just going to reverse the roll direction before the airplane actually has a chance to turn and it's it's a very honest exercise because if you ever mismatch the two you'll see right away that your nose will depart obviously okay so why don't you take control you can try that so just keep your eyes outside focus on standback and just try to do a roll left and right left and right about that point very spirited a little bit too much rather than okay all right good that's a little heavy on the foot okay yeah since your roll rate is not so much you're not deflecting a lot of air on you don't actually need that much better exactly that's better oh that was awesome this is cool good i'm glad you're liking it i should show you some uh basic aqua okay i'm gonna give you a taste of what you're in for with the extra sure we're not going to cover basic acro training in this one it's really about blake's first experience flying tailwheel but i wanted to keep his first execution of a loop that's an awesome memory for anyone that's ever flown upside down for the first time well you can take control okay can control let me just kind of tell me what you're gonna do what are some of the key points you're gonna try to do a pitch down for 140 bring it up to the riser for a bit perfect then straight back all the way back and then as i lose like i guess our eyes keep an eye on the left uh and then uh i said come around look up to see the get my reference again yep uh so at the top release of the back pressure a little bit correct and then uh back up to the horizon very good very good my friend let's do it you can point the nose down you've got the power side i got it for you okay absolutely a little more down right above there you can keep more pressure to keep the nose there all right fly level and we'll pull right into it now look left now relax the stick a little bit look forward now you can start to pull back gently now you can pull harder just like you did in the beginning all the way back to the horizon and you just hit a loop yes oh my god that's so awesome yes very nice very nice you're really good in the loop i mean this is the biggest thing to keep in mind is just make sure you're looking in the right place at the right time yeah that's this big part of it yeah all right well let's head back had a nice 12-month gusty crosstalk for your first tailwheel landing yeah yeah but you were up for it yeah i was yeah we briefed the three-point landing so that's what we stuck with in the end yeah but we did a a wing low three-point landing yeah trying to fly about 70 at this point graphics on the go speed feels good raise the nose a little bit keep your wings well he's challenging with the window just do the best you can yeah so that's one thing with three-point landing your with your wing angle being higher like you're more susceptible to being kind of picked up like that runway is clear hit power back a little bit raise the nose a little bit give yourself a little bit of nose up trim okay so now we're just going to fly it down and level off just above the ground and hold it off the power power's off but we got a little bit of speed here so we're gonna have to hold it off a while we can bring it down a little lower and just drop that left leg into the wind that's okay we'll just hold it hold it so we touched like that right yeah and then let the down tire touch you can't compromise you know like you can't be like oh well i'm done doing this hold up i'm just going to land yeah blaine's not going to let you do it if you hit on the mains first yeah this is going to bounce and balance it's not going to settle so you have to just hold it for that moment where the stick is almost all the way back you're just about to stall all three tires touch or in this case would be the two stick is back and did you hear that it was a stall hole going off yeah exactly yeah oh yeah good this is so cool something different if you want more tailwheel oriented content i've got an entire playlist that follows my basic initial training and then i share the process of getting checked out in a stearman the chipmunk and culminating in the t6 harvard which i'm super proud of holy see now why they say this makes you a better pilot with sticker rudder yeah you see it right yes absolutely [Music] they're off and everything off excellent awesome all right man thanks great job it was fun it was it was a lot of fun i was at the start i was worried about getting sick uh but like you said as soon as you're when you're in control it's completely different at first i was like i had a death grip on the on the stick but then i loosened up a bit yeah yeah and one thing i noticed actually some of the taxi taxi on the way back was i didn't have to worry about looking up front i can just look at the side and see if i was moving closer to the edge of the taxiway or precisely right so exactly [Music] so after a debrief and a lunch break blake was about to get a taste of real aerobatics it may not have been the best choice to do this after lunch and uh blake i'll give you this air sickness bag better safe and sorry right yeah and uh best thing i think to do is just to kind of tuck it inside your sweater or your shirt and then seal it up just so it doesn't fly out should you need it let me know i'll keep things upright and don't forget to open it and move your microphone hey there's a reason i'm telling you no i know i know after blake was strapped in luke and i briefed how we wanted to achieve a shot that we wanted to pull off yeah so once we fire up you're welcome to look out there and we'll just follow you to the taxiway exactly so you're gonna take off turn around and buzz me opposite direction yep okay yeah so we'll come this way [Music] all right one two like you there yeah i'm here are you feeling man good excited nervous at the same time all the right emotions yeah you must be able to see more back there right because it's like a little bit yeah not much but yeah you gotta you gotta ask turn regardless right stamina traffic extra roma alpha is gonna be lining up and departing three six and we're gonna do an immediate low and over on one eight after if the traffic down could extend out breasts will extend for uh and we're flying yeah this is awesome wow she's fast she is yeah yeah i also say hi to steve yeah you have a haircut give him a haircut i think he needs one i think steve's hair is looking shorter if i have to change his hands good all right blake the time has come are you ready my friend i'm ready well let's get you warmed up with the loop which you already know okay we can go ahead and look at the left side of the airplane [Music] look above you you're gonna feel a little bit of g coming on here and there is the loop that you know well you asked for a barrel roll we gotta do a barrel roll we have to be talking about the same thing here so when you say barrel roll let's get on the same page so maybe you show me what you think about right and this is probably not what a barrel wall is right so when you're just going like this straight level but just turning around like that not a barrel yeah okay all right so what's a barrel then yeah so a barrel roll you can think of it as a loop and a roll combined so we're looping and rolling at the same time float over the top just like a loop that's halfway through and then we'll just recover to our original header guys so it's like a corkscrew more profile so it'll be looping drawing and then back to the original okay and i'm gonna have you look at that left-hand wing again we're gonna pull 60 and then we're gonna roll oh yeah buddy oh and we do a hammerhead yeah hey which way you want to roll left or right let's go right i will roll right i will pull out try to lift your arms up we gotta slow down a bit not a problem give me a second i will give you as many seconds as you need and if you want you can take control i have a control make like a left turn as a normal turn oh my god this thing is so sensitive yeah wow yeah yeah i get the feel for her what was the maneuver called this this is a we call this a slow roll okay not because it has to be slow but the idea is that it's it's axial so you're rolling about the longitudinal axis yeah so you don't change setting and you don't change altitude they're more difficult to do luke actually just published a short video demonstrating this it's definitely worth checking out oh yeah so yeah i'm feeling a little sick oh i heard that yeah no worries do you think you've got stomach to try to roll yourself no no no yeah okay let me know what you want to do i could take it back or you could yeah i'd take her back okay yeah sorry man i don't know you know what it was uh trying to put my hands up yeah that's when i started feeling sick really yeah [Music] nice there's the tail let's pick back and they're just very light breaking it's always light breaking yeah there's plenty of videos on youtube of guys hitting the brakes too hard to be tail draggers and bad things happen short but sweet my friend thanks absolutely yeah no i'm glad you came yeah me too [Music] that was quick that was quick yeah good sign or a bad sign no it was good it was just uh too much it's a little too much too soon but it was fun i'm coming back and do this again yeah but you got your lunch still uh yeah it's still here it didn't throw up uh we had to cut it short just yeah just because that's i know my limit right yeah so that's good yeah yeah right on uh the hammerhead was the best part though right yeah that's my favorite so i hope you enjoyed that one and for the rest of the episodes in this series you can visit flightchops.com and also join the mailing list so i can reach you when we publish and until next time keep your flake chops sharp man smee thanks a lot man that was great i wouldn't have cleaned down when you did the loan over but i think i said something like that when's the last time you did a spin maybe a couple years ago okay yeah cool this plane is a really nice spin what kind of airplane did you do here's some spin training i was at a 170 okay so then you've never really done
