some formula one alliances of team and driver are doomed to failure while the best partnerships are celebrated those that fail most spectacularly are usually quickly forgotten so we decided to dredge up the worst drivers to drive for each of the 10 current f1 teams in their history but first some ground rules we're considering only full-time drivers for teams rather than stand-ins while that leaves the door open to those who only had short spells with teams provided they were intended to be regulus we're letting off those who have flung into f1 unexpectedly so that's good news for 2009 ferrari filling luca bedoa we're also using a broad definition of each team for example in the case of aston martin we look all the way back to its first season in its jordan guys in 1991. we're also looking specifically at these drivers performances for the team in question rather than their overall level of ability some very accomplished drivers and even one world champion are included on this basis in fact the majority of drivers on this list have had successful careers but it just didn't work out for them in the cases cited make sure you subscribe to the race so you don't miss any of our f1 videos and make use of the notification spell to be told the instance there's something new to watch williams alex cenady alex zanardi is a legend both for his exploits in cart and for his heroics since losing his legs in a horrific crash at the laosits ring in 2001 on both three and four wheels but even cernardi's biggest fans would have to admit that he didn't jail with f1 his 1999 campaign with williams was particularly dismal zanardi simply never got on with the williams struggling in particular with the carbon brakes and even experimenting with using steel brakes he also struggled with a grooved bridgestone rubber particularly when it came to extracting the peak of grip on a qualifying lap signed on a three-year deal zadardi failed to score a point in 1999 compared to teammate ralph schumacher's hall of 35 which included three podium finishes at the end of the year williams paid him off and signed rookie jensen button instead zanadi never raced in f1 again hass nikita mazapin nikita mazapin has only just started his f1 career so is very much a work in progress but given the short history of huss only stretches back to the start of 2016 he is currently the obvious candidate as worst driver despite a reasonable amount of prior testing experience masapin's career has started badly his pace has been surprisingly poor for a driver who has two formula two feature race wins to his name and he's yet to qualify within four tenths of a second of teammate mick schumacher but he's going to be around for a while and will improve meaning he can aspire to rid himself of the dubious honor of being the worst hass driver in the future aston martin ivan capelli after a disastrous season with struggling ferrari in 1992 the hope was that cappelli would recapture the form that earned him podium finishes and almost victory for leyton house in the 1990 french grand prix on his switch to jordan for the following season sadly his 1993 campaign was short and painful at kyle army he crashed heavily on lap three and failed even to qualify it into lagos after endless troubles on friday and saturday thanks to a combination of capelli struggles and the failure to come up with the promised one million dollars of sponsorship money the italian was dropped in favour of thierry butson despite chasing an f1 return in 1994 and exploring opportunities in indycar capelli's future lay in touring cars and sports cars alfa romeo nicola lourini things appeared to start well for nicola lorini at sauber in 1997 when he finished sixth in the season opening australian grand prix he had plenty of f1 experience both performing miracles in minnow teams and finishing second for ferrari at imola in 1994 so this was no surprise the problem was that laurini didn't feel especially wanted at sauber given he'd been placed there by engine supplier ferrari the relationship between team and driver never gelled a series of disputes between lourini and the team about the way they operated led to him walking away just five races into the season having failed to score another point another ferrari-affiliated driver johnny morbidelli replaced him with roberto fontana filling in for him on four occasions thanks to morbidelli twice suffering injuries alfa tauri alex young when alex young made his f1 debut in the 2001 italian grand prix at monza expectations for malaysia were unrealistically high but jun despite going on to prove he had genuine ability with race wins in a1 gp was desperately underprepared for f1 and struggled qualifying over a second off teammate fernando alonso in his three outings for the minardi team in the days before it was bought by red bull jung lined up alongside mark webber at minardi in 2002 and again lagged behind although did manage to close to just seven tenths off in qualifying for the early season malaysian grand prix but after failing to qualify for three of the next 10 races he was temporarily benched in favour of anthony davidson jung returned for the final three grand prix of the year but continued to struggle although he did sign off by qualifying just three tenths off weber a future suzuka poll sitter at the japanese grand prix mclaren nigel mansell unwanted by williams which held an option on his services and had to pay him off after deciding to run david coulthard nigel mansell signed up on a one-year deal for mclaren in 1995 a deal facilitated partly by title sponsor marlbro and f1 ringmeister bernie ecclestone the manslam mclaren combination was expected to be a title challenging force with all sorts of pre-season fighting talk but at the start of testing it immediately became clear that the mclaren mercedes mp410 was not a good car mansell struggled even to fit into the mclaren meaning he couldn't complete long runs in testing this necessitated the design and construction of a wider chassis resulting in test driver mark blundell filling in for the first two races of the season on his first outing in imola mansell qualified over a second off mikka hakkanen and was running fifth when jordan driver eddie irvine's overtaking attempt resulted in a collision the time lost meant mansell went on to finish 10th second time out in spain mansell qualified within a tenth of a second of hakkenen but retired from the race sighting handling issues unsurprisingly he then quit entirely for the full story of mansell and mclaren check out the bring back v10s podcast season 1 episode 7. ferrari giancarlo baghetti it might seem absurd to pick a driver who won the 1961 french grand prix for ferrari on his world championship debut for this dubious honor especially given he also won on his first two starts in non-championship f1 races prior to that but baghetti never performed at the level you would expect of a ferrari driver while he was entered for the french grand prix in 1961 under the fisa banner it was actually a factory ferrari entry and he only just pipped the slower porsche of dan gurney after others fell by the wayside on his outings in 1962 when he was part of the regular lineup despite not entering every race he showed unremarkable pace even so he could have stayed at ferrari in 1963 but made the ill-advised decision to join the ats breakaway instead alpine nelson pk jr nelson pk jr came into formula one with what was then called renault in 2008 with a big reputation having fought with lewis hamilton for the gp2 title two years earlier but despite significant testing mileage he really struggled inevitably his role in the singapore grand prix controversy when he was ordered to crash deliberately is what he's most remembered for his form did pick up a little in the second half of 2008 notably with a second place in the german grand prix but that was largely a consequence of a fortunately timed safety car he struggled again in 2009 before being replaced by roman grosjean although there were moments when his quality briefly shone through as very much the number two to fernando alonso pk stint with the team was poor and ultimately became infamous red bull jan magnusson jan magnuson's dominant 1994 british formula 3 season combined with an impressive one-off f1 debut for mclaren in 1995 made him the obvious choice to drive for the new stuart team which later become red bull via a stint as jaguar in 1997. sadly it didn't work out during 1997 he failed to score a point and was usually outperformed by teammate rubens barrichello on average magnuson lapped just over three quarters of a percent off barrichello's pace and race finishes were rare albeit most often as a result of reliability problems it was a similar story in 1998 and magnuson was dropped after finally claiming his first point with sixth place in the canadian grand prix after he lost his drive magnuson suggested he was very much the number two driver in the team that he felt was focused primarily on barrichello but team boss jackie stewart questioned magnuson's approach and resulting lack of pace magnuson went on to a hugely successful and ongoing career in sports car racing but he never got another f1 shot mercedes ricardo zonta ricardo zonta seemed the perfect choice to partner jacques vilnerv with the new bar team in 1999 a champion in formula 3 formerly 3000 and the fia gt series he was as well qualified as f1 rookies come a crash on his second outing into lagos that prevented him contesting the brazilian grand prix and the next three races set the tone for zonta's difficult two-season spell bar didn't score a point in 1999 and zonta was well off fieldner's pace he closed the gap a little in 2000 and picked up a trio of six places but he was unhappy with his treatment as what he saw as little more than an afterthought for a team built around vilnev santa left bar and despite further f1 outings for both jordan and toyota his grand prix career never regained its momentum let us know in the comments
