i didn't come down home i want to teach some of you and then i want to remind some of you not going to keep you much longer what a whale song is i'm in the director's chairs my first time i didn't listen to spike i didn't take the the honorable direction and access if you would to tyler perry because i wanted to do it myself i wanted to tell the story without anybody telling me what to do the name of the movie is the lost song it's about my father in 1947 who gets a record deal with the major record company in new york and he convinced 21 foot soldiers 21 foot soldiers to go with him to new york in his words they were going to the big time name of the choir and it was a choir not a quartet group they were called bit john and the southland gospel singers and they sang with harmonies of traditional harmonies and that's where i got it will be all right and that kind of singing from that they they use choirs to sing what we know is quartet music they jumped on the bus my uncle williams bus and they headed to new york they got about an hour and a half outside of durham near smithfield north carolina and the klu klux klan turned their butts around and shot the tires out my daddy came home he was discouraged and that's why i wanted to tell the story because in all of his discouragement he got encouraged he created a brick for created a brick for adam's concrete it was cost efficient he used a different type of materials and they promised him he'd be a millionaire they say big john we're gonna get the check to you it's in the mail and it just never came but in 1975 they convinced him to put the choir back together he said he'd never sing again he'd never go back he never ever ever put the group together they convinced him to put the choir back together when i was a little boy growing up in durham pastor shirley caesar would have this big gospel gigantic concert that's what they called it every year and everybody would come james cleveland the hawkins family would come gospel artists from all over the globe would come so we recreated that in the movie mahalia jackson even showed up i played with history a little bit i know she passed in 72 but i gave her three more years in the movie it's not just a movie about my father it's a movie about a tour with mahaya james cleveland caravans and the dixie hummingbirds you're going to absolutely love the movie my son john stood john p key the third he played my father in the movie from 14 to 35 and the late great bishop ranch allen played my father from oh he did an amazing job i can't wait for you to see it from the age 35 to 1981 but in this movie i i sing some old good songs and i teach you what a whale song is my uncle junior they got a cd of his back there too if you want some old good
