father figure to generations of musicians who got withering glances from Goodman when they didn't play like a perfectionist he pushed himself beyond jazz playing classical concertos and chamber music the quintessential American jazz musician he played his clarinet deep into the hearts of Americans and millions of people elsewhere in the world over a period of 60 years he died of a heart attack here in New York City today and here's ABC's bill Blake morning [Music] the King of Swing born in Chicago 77 years ago child of poor East European immigrants by the age of 30 was a world-famous master of jazz transforming the humble clarinet into an instrument of sounds no one had ever heard before [Music] so great his achievement no one song became his theme but an entirely new way to make a single line of melody one note at a time command a whole band of counterpoint rhythms I don't know if they had come along another place that I was swinging but he did his job when he had when he was posed to swing he's one [Music] he never stopped growing just four years ago to a packed house in a Long Island College he was coaxing from modern ballets the same excitement he used to get from Swing [Music] I think one gets nervous when you find out how hard it is when you're trying to do where you go you don't know how hard toward the end of his life he said he was still trying to figure out just what it is that makes a person want to listen to music he claimed it isn't much to do with the notes whatever it is Benny Goodman had it don't Blakemore ABC News New York Benny Goodman he was 77 at the age of 77 as NBC's John Hart reports now Benny Goodman was so much more than just a man with a clarinet [Music] the kid from Chicago will learn music and a synagogue started playing for money when he was 13 and before he was 30 was the King of Swing he was such an extraordinary musician that wherever he was and whatever he played swing classical or jazz people mobbed the place so good he was able to play jazz and Carnegie Hall who was a publicity stunt party of all nobody involved when he put Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson in his band he broke a color barrier for blacks and white orchestras we did tell the people well we've always said we have to black people and I said oh no I could forget it a lot of his friends just refused to be disturbed when he put Teddy Wilson on as a band together you know so what you got this black guys and playing with you you know he said well you know we need their black keys and the white keys we wolf to make play to calm their music he was like that blunt grumpy calling rock and roll amplified junk and musicians who work for him were scared of his eyes they'd really nail you said Lionel Hampton and it went around to that he was more generous with his talent than with his money still his talent was spread around he was the first one the Soviets allowed in to play jazz looking back Goodman said recently it has sort of driven me nuts over the years what makes good music what makes you want to sit down and listen to it the answer was obvious Benny Goodman [Music] john hart NBC News New York assembly news for this Friday night
