now it's not to be confused with the better known black mountains which lighted the eastern edge of the park both ranges form natural boundary lines one with herefordshire in england and this one with paris and whilst it's easy to get the two confused what is very clear is that this region boasts some absolutely beautiful landscapes camarlinshire is located in the south west of wales where the typical price for a detached home is a little shy of two hundred thousand pounds around fifty thousand pounds below the rest of wales and more than one hundred and fifty thousand pounds less than the uk as a whole and when it comes to lovely locations house hunters are spoilt for choice fertile land gives the historic county green rolling hills and pasture plenty whilst the coastline is dotted with fishing villages and beautiful beaches including the seven mile long pending sands this expansive stretch of coast attained global fame in the 1920s as a site where the land speed record was pursued and set the beach remains a popular spot for record attempts and in recent years speeds of over 200 miles per hour have been recorded here bookmarthanshire is not just for speed demons with a population density at just 200 people per square mile it's a quiet pocket of whales ideal for those seeking a peaceful and rural escape with mars a beautiful countryside and of course coastline it should come as no surprise when i tell you that over three quarters of the residents of camarthonshire were born in wales after all you'd have to have a pretty good reason to leave all of this but today's buyers did move away and it's our job to help them make a welcome return home well i was born in north wales and i was brought and raised in south wales so wales is kind of between us somewhere we both know yeah it's nice you like rails richard a retired managing director and june who works part-time as a celebrant for funerals have been married 38 years and have lived in oxford for the last 20. not has served us very well hasn't it yeah it's been lovely living here but it's it's just too big now we don't really we don't need it we don't have a large family ourselves just the one son he's away and so there isn't much now to keep us in oxford and some of our good friends are also on the move everyone's lives now are just taking a different direction as our our lives so we just want somewhere different somewhere quieter we really want to to find property with a bit of land an acre or two of land in camarden we'd ideally like somewhere that we could have as a holiday let that we would also then make dog friendly so people coming to stay would bring their dogs dogs have been and without doubt will continue to be an important part of our life together we got this idea that if we had a nice big field uh enclosed area that we could secure make dog-friendly so folk could just come in safe in the knowledge they can let their dogs off the lead and have a good old run around june volunteers for a dog rescue charity says she could have a ready-made client base for their new dog focused hospitality venture i know june through yoga and when i said that i was looking for a rescue dog she said that we rescue dogs from the streets in romania we found mickey he's just so lovely and an older dog when richard and june move to carmarthenshire i'm sure we'll stay in touch and i know that they're hoping to set up a dog hotel so maybe we'll be able to take mickey there and stay and see them which will be lovely you want your man's shed don't you i want my mouth you want man cave that's what he wants so you don't know what i'm going to do with it no you'll learn some new skills it's a challenge and that in itself is part of this journey that we're hoping to embark on new stage of our lives [Music] no they do say don't they the home is where the heart is and i think that while richard and june have enjoyed living in oxford wales still has a very special place in both of their hearts so it makes complete sense for them to come back here to enjoy their retirement with their dogs all i can say when you look around at this landscape is lucky dogs all we need to do now is find them a house here that they can all enjoy richard and june are looking for a detached property ideally with open plan living spaces and three bedrooms to create their dog-friendly adventure zone they want at least an acre of land preferably with some woodland and for the dog owners the potential for a holiday let too their maximum budget is 450 000 pounds i'm really looking forward to showing them around a fantastic selection of welsh houses but the price of each potential home will only be revealed after they've had a go at getting first the final tour on this homecoming to wales will be a mystery house in a location which inspired one of the country's most celebrated literary legends without further ado we're hitting the road to get this command ship property tour into gear so how does it feel to be back in wales it's coming home isn't it really for both of you yes yes that was grand born emails dying wheels it's literally the next chapter so where we're going to be spending it we don't know and that's the exciting bit but i know for the two of you it's about land and space outside tell me about your plans for that june it's going to be focused mainly around dogs because we are really quite doggy people um so we want something we can enclose to make um a secure dog walking area so in a secure area they can let the dog off it can have a good old run round and then it it's nice for the dog it's nice for the people we'll attempt to build a few sort of like obstacles and heidi places and just make it clear just make it interesting for the dogs dogs are going to play a fairly big part in the movie yes i have them all my life started off and being puppy walkers for gay dogs so dogsy is a big part of our lives really [Music] our first property destination is pencada a small rural village that lies just a 20-minute drive from the county town of camarden which has all the modern chains and great transport links with the rest of wales in england located in the midst of a farming community where most people are welsh speakers pancada facilities include a shop and a pub just over a mile away and surrounded by countryside lies the property in question so let me know your thoughts on an old converted corn mill wow there we go oh wow oh yes yes yes yes yeah i can hear water as well i can mill has to be water then doesn't it it does it does sadly the old mill wheel is no longer here but you do get the stream and in fact you have your own section a private stream that comes with the house excellent and that is about all you can hear if you just quiet for a second it's so peaceful here all you can hear is the stream and the birds yeah fabulous well you've done well on this one great start fantastic okay and you're quite keen to have a look inside really quite excited about it yeah [Laughter] set over three floors this stone and slate cornmill was built in the middle of the 19th century and turned into a home in the 1980s we're starting our tour through the glass panel back door entrance so let's start straight in the kitchen lots of windows in here and it takes advantage of just the beautiful views over the garden wow contemporary love it yeah excellent smaller than we imagined yeah i see there's a little table here um we do tend to spend a lot of time in the kitchen but i'm hoping there'll be another room through there maybe you've got the the area outside that little outdoor terrace i can see quite a lot of teas coffees glasses of wine gin and tonics being consumed out there i don't think you're going to be disappointed by the size of the living room hold it on okay come on fantastic oh fabulous and how about that for a picture window yeah if you can have a picture window wait until you see what the picture is like through that one oh wow how does this come up for size yeah 11 out of 10. [Laughter] it's a lot to take in in here isn't that it's surprising isn't it oh yeah yeah got a lot of log burning fire you've got the original features love it cracking stuff and so what else is down here on the ground floor you've got a good size utility space and a downstairs bathroom there right and then upstairs we've got three bedrooms to show you and that's just a little a little extra something but my lips are sealed for now okay the character exterior and open plan living space have gone down well but there are two further floors to see so this is my little surprise oh wow wow look at this just yet [Laughter] it's really grand it's a cozy reading room it's a music room it's for those times when one of you wants to watch something else on the tv to the other this is the snake isn't it this is yeah do you think you would use it though it's another one yes yeah no without a doubt which is the evening this has come out this is what's to tell you read the book do what you do well there are a few bedrooms i'd like you to explore i think you'd probably want the one just down there on the left but you might like the ones on the top floor as well oh there's another floor off you go explain all right come and find me when you've seen enough i'll be waiting downstairs to show you the garden thank you thanks i mean we couldn't be off to a better start good or it's fantastic i think they're sold on the space inside what about the space outside oh that remains to be seen the remainder of this middle floor is taken up by a very large main bedroom suite and on the top floor there's an additional shower room that serves two further bedrooms which could accommodate guests paying or otherwise one's currently used as a single but does have space for a double bed and the other is also a double room wow it's also bright isn't it again also light and bright wonderful wow oh isn't this nothing it's cottagey without being yeah cottagey isn't it i love it and a nice window up there as well okay should we go and look at the other rooms then there come on then oh well look shower room and there's another bedroom here all right just oh wow it's huge beautiful windows i mean this is a big room anyway they've only got a single bed here but you could just as easily get a double in and have space the single room gives you one less doesn't it yeah well they've got this way absolutely mind your head this is such a great spot on our own day because you're you're all covered and sheltered there's nothing oh it's lovely right lots to see inside are you ready to talk garden and taught money yes please well go ahead i'll have money too the garden wraps around the house and includes a large area of flat lawn a vegetable patch and fruit trees as well as its own section of stream although there isn't a dedicated annex a large detached garage with power has potential the land amounts to three-quarters of an acre which is a little less than richard and june had requested the garden is a slight challenge we're not showing you acres here i know you have plans that you know you would potentially carry out if you had a lot of land that doesn't offer this but it offers something different absolutely i can hear the stream i can hear the birds it's just wonderful and this has just got a lovely aura a lovely feeling about it as well it just gives the right feeling let's see if you can afford it so come on here's the tricky question what do you think this one's on the market for your budget is 450 000 pounds yeah i are you sure this is within our budget i don't think this is i think this is over our budget i really do i think this has got to be 460 000 pounds okay i'm at the 400. okay well you're actually both off the markets on the market for 445 000 pounds it's within the budget just 5 000 pounds down from that it's only been on the market for a couple of weeks wow why don't you go and explore the garage and see what kind of potential that could offer you for the holiday let's all right all right thank you this 19th century converted mill sits comfortably below budget and comes with an open plan living space on the ground floor an additional snug and three bedrooms including a large muster with ensuite there's a detached garage and just under an acre of pretty grounds all set in very peaceful surroundings i love the look of the outside it was beautiful and very cottagy so lots and lots of character when we got in it was like doctor who's tardis it's just amazing open plan exactly what we are looking for not not separate little rooms but just plenty of open space i can truly say particularly into the lounge the living area i really was quite blown away there's an incredible amount of ceiling height and incredible spaciousness the house has got character and then it's got this fantastic grounds and you can hear the water and you hear the bird it's just got everything i was convinced it was not within our budget just because of what's here um but it's within our budget i can absolutely see us here i've mentally moved in already there's a lot going on an awful lot to see but have you seen enough i think yeah there's a lot going on in my head yes i got processing to do it let's give you some time to process then come on [Laughter] when richard and june move home to wales they're keen to have some land and they would really like part of it to include woodland to learn how to manage such land in harmony with the natural environment they've come to see malcolm edwards who conserves and expands kamathansha's tree habitat at his 37 acre plot so welcome tell us about this wonderful woodland you got here it was intensively stocked with cattle as soon as we fenced that within two years um it it's kind of come back to a point where you know you can see ferns bluebells you know diverse wildflowers and i've got less pasture than i had originally because i've planted up um an extensive portion of it with 2000 new trees so when you first got this you had a lot of work to reverse a lot of damage had been done by the sound of it a lot of work yeah and it was done manually without tractors as well so the 37 acres of land had to be done by hand sensitive management sensitive land management will just give mother nature a chance to come back so what trees have you planted here then satowi valley mix they call it which is ash oak birch and hazel as landowners we have responsibility to keep to those to those mix and that includes the seed that's gathered so the seed that uh grew those plants on was from this vicinity in these days of deforestation you're going against the trend there exactly yeah good yeah good man malcolm also makes nesting boxes for birds and other wildlife if you come over here okay arrested you come over here and the purpose of the bird box is it purely just to repopulate an area it's worth adding um more places for birds to nest in your woodland these are more for your kind of garden birds and small birds here with a woodland has been grazed by cattle you know there's very little dead wood on the floor there's not many crevices in the trees you create habitat piles like decomposing piles of a brash but you need to add places that yeah birds can nest so these like to increase the chances of birds coming to visit but you can put them in your garden even if you have got lots of sights for them to nest you know it's more opportunities just are just going to mean more wildlife do you make boxes just for birds or do you make me for any other animals we make boxes for door mice as well as uh as well as for bats because this wood is a working corpus it produces the the perfect habitat for dormice which is bramble um honeysuckle um hazelnuts um and brash and a lot of cover fantastic richard and jun are helping to assemble a couple of bird boxes four pins in there pre-cut plywood pieces are held together using hammer and nails and a staple gun [Laughter] and just like human house hunters birds are all about location it's just important to uh sight those in a on a north or east facing slope or away from the direct sunlight and up away from predators clearly anybody of any skill in the ability can do that you made this really easy to do malcolm yeah thank you my friend you're welcome just yeah i wish you all the best yeah in your search for a new home thank you very much we're in south west wales helping richard and june make the move to the camaraderie countryside from the city of oxford we've already had a taste of what their budget of 450 000 pounds could buy them here but we're not done yet because still to come i'll be unveiling the much-anticipated mystery house wow wow gosh okay it has got a bow factor plus i learn about a little shellfish when i head to the seashore who knew they're really nice [Music] we had a fantastic first day's house hunting here in camarthonshire with richard and june and we definitely challenge them with that stunning mill house which really won them over with its charm but didn't have all the land that they say they're looking for so today we're going to really put that to the test and find out if it's the house or the land that matters to them the most and when it comes to the mystery house let's just say it has the potential to turn things upside down our search has headed over the county border to pembrokeshire close to the village of kilgetti facilities include a pub post office and stores pharmacy and a choice of takeaways kilgetti station is a request stop on the west wales railway line to destinations such as pembroke and kamathen it's a two and a half mile drive to the very rural surroundings of the next property so here we go what'd you think yeah actually at bungalow lovely i hadn't discounted bungalows but we hadn't really looked at many bungalows welsh longhouse okay are you making this up as you go along so should we go and take a look at what this welsh long house thought to have been built in the 1960s and extended more recently a central porch takes us viral hall to an l-shaped kitchen so because this is a bungalow it's got a really bright light airy feel because you've got windows pretty much on both sides of almost every room in the house so the kitchen isn't just here if you follow me yeah i know you like to eat in the kitchen yes and it moves down here and then you've got oh wow jewel windows do a aspect and lovely views right onto the garden excellent yeah so i mean our table would definitely fit here wouldn't it yeah promise yeah yeah be able to see what the land is i know i'm going to take you through to the living room because that's it's got some fantastic views okay i'll give you a sneak preview of what's to come with the land one door of the kitchen also accesses the garage which could be used as a utility space and boot room whilst another door leads to a large reception space now you may not expect from the outside to see a living space quite a bit big yeah yeah of course we've got a lovely cozy conservatory um with beautiful views over the gardens in the land yes they have they have this is a rear extension oh okay from there got it okay that really makes a difference doesn't it i know you quite like open plan living don't you so actually that wall they're just stud walls yeah you know potentially you could take those down and you could have a fantastic plan yeah living dining space my first thought would be yeah to do that to really open it all out promising so well let's carry on with the tour inside and see if we can keep that going okay a promising reaction to the living accommodation in the other wing of the bungalow there are three bedrooms and a family bathroom so you have a smaller bedroom here there's another good sized double and then you this area is currently used oh this space yeah but i think it could easily become a dressing room yeah because through here there's a master bedroom oh gosh oh wow that's a little ensuite and really lovely views onto the oh look at that view wow there's really good space in this house and it could be used in a lot of different ways to suit you actually that would work as a dressing room and little glimpse there of the gardens and the land a little breeze you're big in this garden it might be good do i see would you like to see the garden oh the interior may benefit from some modernizing in places but our couple have no problems visualizing how the space could work for them outside two acres of land include landscape gardens with a bridge pond summer house mature shrubs and flower beds and a flat enclosed paddock where planning was previously granted for a barn with accommodation this is wonderful is it so i didn't overplay the garden no definitely i think that would possibilities come out and even more so now it's flat land it's well maintained the house is more than acceptable um and over a period of time we can develop our future very exciting very exciting indeed now of course all those plans are going to they're going to cost money aren't they so are you ready to talk money to guess what you think this one's on the market for all right 395 000 pounds 395 000 pounds okay i'm going to go more than that i'm sure it's over the 400 so i'm going to go 425 000. which is you're almost spot on 390 000 pounds 390 000 wow so you would you would have money within your budget absolutely to do whatever's got to be done at a pace that we wanted to do that wonderful yeah love it well why don't you go off and explore go and take a look around and i'll be waiting outside when you've seen enough when you're ready off you go see you later i couldn't ask for a better reaction they're bubbling with excitement which is lovely to see this modern bungalow leaves plenty in the budget and comes with a large reception room and three bedrooms there are two acres of land including an enclosed paddock plus there's potential to acquire planning permission for holiday accommodation that's the mental picture of the land that i had that it would look nice and flat open pasture meadow this is the property of possibilities the minute we saw outside the garden and then when we saw this here um the gosh this with the two together just amazing i couldn't have drawn it better i couldn't have imagined it better and sometimes when you have an image in your head you can't always find that image in reality but this is it this house here to me says exactly everything i want in my heart here this has real possibilities and that's exciting i don't know what we're going to do but it's wonderful to think that we're going to be able to do it here if we had the dogs coming out of the door there and then straight down here straight through and out into the field still talking possibilities that's fantastic but i'm going to have to tear you away from them now come on it's time to leave oh okay [Music] for our mystery house we're close to the coast in the town of long a popular tourist destination the town has great facilities including a good choice of places to eat and drink as well as its atmospheric location the big draw here is the ruin castle one of the many coastal defenses built between chepstow and pembroke during the norman period this romantic ruin is thought to have inspired one of wales's most well-known literary figures who once lived in the town putting pen to paper in his cliff top writing shed until his untimely death aged just 39. i thought it would be great to bring you here to learn which of course is the home of uh dylan thomas the famous welsh poet who's also buried here one of his pieces of work called poem in october was about being here in london how much he loved it and about growing older here as well so not a bad place to grow what go along with that yeah could you imagine that yes yeah definitely okay well how about we go look at a mystery house here then oh yes please okay come on let's take that walk [Music] just a few minutes walk from the castle and the coast our final property sits in tranquil surroundings [Music] so mystery house gosh okay a converted barn and that is farm building it used to be a cow shed wow so there are two mysteries for me one of them is that this really is not about the two of you this is about the dogs okay okay because this is a beautiful spot for the dogs and to be able to walk down to the beach the other mystery i'll reveal when we get inside so we're going to store should we go inside just please okay let's take a look the 150 year old cow shed was converted into a home just 12 years ago but now epitomizes modern day living you know how you like open plans living yeah it's got lovely open plan living fabulous but it's all upstairs and the mystery is it's an upside down okay yeah so let's start upstairs the open tread stairway leads us straight into a spacious kitchen and reception room with exposed beam work now i know you're a bit concerned about seeing the night no problems are seeing height here no and none at all wow wow very open lovely i'm not disliking it at all and it has got a wow factor i love the beams wow is it too open planned for you no just right you would have no idea all this is up here would you know exactly it's but it's a really unusual house i mean i personally love upside down living i lived in a barn conversion that was exactly that i had the you know the living space upstairs and i i loved it and you really do particularly in winter you feel so cozy tucked away up at the top yeah all the heat rises so can you imagine yourselves making use of this kind of space yeah oh yeah this is this is just yeah this is how we we would use all this space fabulous so space you're not short of in this one at all let's see a bit more okay i'll show you the master bedroom okay this mystery house has a total of four bedrooms and three bathrooms on this upper floor a family bathroom with separate shower and bath sits alongside the master so here we go oh wow oh gosh this is huge it's lovely isn't it i love the windows and the door and the door the juliet balcony for richard to serenade you it's nice and bright really nice it's beautifully done isn't it yeah really well beautifully done whether or not no i need a bit more thinking time a bit more seeing time the polish presentation and large light spaces of the self-contained first floor haven't quite got the seal of approval so i'm going to let them take their time exploring the ground floor down here there's great potential for holiday let's with a conservatory a utility room that could serve as a guest kitchen and three further bedrooms these include a twin room which benefits from a large ensuite wet room with shower there's also a good sized double presently used for storage the largest guest room has dual aspect and access to a jack and jill shower room it's my size a little small maybe but it's not the master bedroom oh look oh my goodness this is huge oh huge size oh this is nice oh no jack and jill yeah this is lovely plenty of space here isn't it so plenty of accommodation on offer and outside the three quarters of an acre plot provides parking on a private drive as well as a dutch barn plus an extensive garden mainly laid to lawn the woodland footpath that leads to the sea is literally on their doorstep however that does mean there's a public right-of-way across the property [Music] so what do you think about outside it's flat there's plenty of it i like the bit down through the woods there that's lovely but the woods aren't ours the public right the way that runs through here would be an issue for me i think okay what do you think this is on the market for i'm going to say 425 000. so you're going under budget so under the 450 000 pounds what about you richard 395 000. 395 000 pounds although it is very close to the sea so i will be out in fact it's a little bit under that all right it's on the market for 390 000 pounds with the c on your doorstep with lots of potential outside and with money left in your budget to be able to do something with that in you go go and appreciate a bit more of the wow factor give it a bit of thought and and come and find me when you've seen enough off you go thank you this converted couchshed is sixty thousand pounds below budget and provides character with a modern finish there's open plan living upstairs and four bedrooms across two floors it also comes with a large detached agricultural barn and lies just a short stroll from the sea the mystery house certainly made us think um the upside down living very different to what we've had before finished off to a beautiful standard and it's lovely that they caught everything we wouldn't have to do a thing stairs is not a good idea for dogs when it comes to the living area fundamentally upside down living isn't going to work for us and it's a great shame because this is a lovely standard of finish i found myself a peaceful little spot it's nice and sunny there so that's our house hunting done i think it's uh thinking time for you too isn't it [Laughter] definitely [Music] kamadansha's fertile farmland has earned it the title the garden of wales but the sea is also a rich source of food here at the berry inlet tidal mud flats and sun banks provide the ideal environment for picking cockles colin macdonald is managing director of the only company producing pickle cockles in the uk it's funny isn't it because cockles are a really big part of the history of this coastline why is that oh absolutely well for example here in bury port well the very inlet we've got the gulf stream here in the in south wales and the cockles grow a lot quicker than anywhere else in the uk so the cockles you can get quite nice-sized cockles and they're always very much more tasty on the west coast especially the berry inlet the taste of them is just really nice cockles are a familiar sight on britain's beaches and are harvested on the berry inlet from the 1st of april right through to the 31st of december within six hours of being picked a cockle is de-shelled and sent to collins factory where the pickling process begins well i can smell the pickling vinegar in here absolutely so what's happening on the conveyor belt as you can see they're in the big containers there you then drain them yeah and then they put on the inspection belt so what we'll be doing is basically looking for any shell any little small crab anything so that we can see that uh all that's going into the jar is pure cockle so if they're going past it's just a case of picking out anything that shouldn't be there exactly you see there now that there's one with a little bit of shell on there to take that off put it in the in the container tell me about the vinegar because it's such an amazing smell is it just a standard malt vinegar all our recipes are kind of from the 40s and 50s everybody loves this so don't ask me too much about the recipe or i won't be able to tell you oh i just tried secrets in there absolutely for exactly as i remember them and what my mum would love for any small ones i know she'd really like the small one well the small ones are the tastiest they really are sweet and especially around here in the body inlet from the inspection line the cockles go into jars and a pasteurized to create the final product so i know that the cockles come in different shapes and sizes is that a seasonal thing is it to do with their age or is it just the luck of the draw it's all to do with their age so at the moment we've got a vast amount of cockle out there which is from last year's spawn from last year so um that's why we've got mainly the smaller cockles but what will happen now next year these cockles will be two years old we will be a little bit bigger or quite a bit bigger um and then there will be the spawn from this year amongst it next year so there's an arts to know in which ones to take and which ones to leave well that's why they riddle them so they wriggle the smaller ones out to leave them for next year so how many jars do you produce here over the year over the year well what we can do here we do about eighteen ninety thousand a day once our pallet is full we go through to the warehouse and i'll show you the stuff we have the majority of the cockles produced here are sold within the uk however they also appeal to consumers overseas and are particularly popular in spain so this is a real sight of my childhood and a mum would just eat she just eats cockles you know picks away with a fork and like some vinegar but how do you traditionally eat them well well down here you obviously have your welsh breakfast and what happens you have the lava bread which is a seaweed product very traditional welch product the cockle and then pieces of bacon and they fry it up and that's part of the welsh breakfast and that's still popular today very much so yes very much so do you know what my mum could never get me to try them i've never eaten one never haven't you no i haven't well i think you should try it okay i'll let you do the honours as an adult let's see how you feel now this is a first this is for you mum i'm not going to tell you how old i am but this is the first cockle i've ever eaten oh yeah cockles who knew they're really nice yeah i can't believe it there we are they are i mean the vinegar is amazing that's you can taste the secret recipe well i know a woman who is going to be very happy when i take one of these home tour thank you so much thank you although it's been a first for my taste buds this visit has been a real trip down memory lane for me but for now we're leaving the flavors of the kamathansha coast to discover what happens next with our homecoming household we found a beautiful spot to end our camarilla and shah house hunt so let's find out which of the properties has really made their mark on richard and june [Music] so our time in camarden chet is drawing to a close so talking about the properties that we've seen which ones out of those are the possibilities for the two of you i think you know that we could make that bungalow into something very special yes i agree one story living is kind of i think where we're going i think we would probably have discounted a bungalow before but that particular property we could make it what we want we could alter the flow and then all that land outside that's lovely and flat came into it thinking that doesn't really matter about the house the corn mill changed that uh our focus now should be if the house isn't a corn mill can we make it something equally as special and i think that bangalore maybe possibly could be so i've got to ask what's your next move i think we'll be putting in an offer on on the bungalow and certainly going back to see it and go back for another look well i'm so happy that we have potentially found you the house for your move back home here to wales and we wish you all the best with that move thanks thank you [Music] we've had a fantastic few days
