[Music] on today's house search I'm helping a city worker find the retreat from the rat race that's closer to her family and full of warmth and character you see like fireplace that's Becky yeah that's stunning properties also get the buy-in of her cousin who's come along for support extra well today I'm in Hampshire in the village of chorten and this is where the author Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life it was here that she wrote Emma Mansfield Park and my favorite Sense and Sensibility now initially she published her work anonymously but soon her witchy critique of Georgian society gained her many fans amongst them the then Prince Regent today two hundred years after her death back in 1817 well her books are still enjoyed by millions right across the world sitting on the south coast of England the county of Hampshire looks out over the English Channel its County town Winchester is home to europe's longest medieval cathedral and has a history stretching back over a thousand years to the west of the county the new Forest National Park offers a hundred and forty miles of walking paths tracks and trails across ancient woodland Heath's and quaint villages which are home to free roaming ponies donkeys and cattle since 1079 local people have been able to graze their livestock freely in the forest as part of a tradition known as comedy stretching to the sea the new forest occupies 40 miles of Hampshire's coastline including the Georgian town of Lymington in the 17th century it was a hub for shipbuilding but today the cobbled Key is a popular spot for leisure yachts Hampshire is a County boasting natural splendor and a rich history with scenic landscapes comprising stunning coastline ancient forests and rolling hills it makes the perfect destination for a well-connected but peaceful escape well sadly there are no two ways about it but house hunting in Hampshire doesn't come cheap currently the average price of a detached property here is some 500 thousand pounds that's a hundred and seventy thousand pounds above the national figure why well beautiful countryside excellent transport links back to London and of course a coastline that many people flock to and you can pay even more if you fancy moving to the property hotspot of the New Forest National Park there you could pay another 30 percent on top of that already hefty half a million pound a ver äj-- but thankfully he doesn't put today's buyer off she's more than happy to take it all in her stride to find a new home in Hampshire one year ago HR professional Becky decided to leave her London flat to try out semi rural living in Buckinghamshire she's been renting a cottage near the town of Marlow and is now ready to buy her dream country home her boyfriend Dan has a demanding job as an engineer so her close cousin Hayley will be accompanied her on the house hunt Hayley's a great partner for this search but she's very grounded so she will think about you know practical things while I might get a little carried away with the excitement of everything out of the two as I would say I'm the more pragmatic one definitely being close to family is a major factor driving Becky's move and cousin Haley's should have a great insight as she still lives close to where they grew up although Becky will continue to work for a bank in London she can't wait to rediscover her home county joining me on this move will be a Dan my boyfriend my two beloved dogs Barbara and Margot growing up in Hampshire was fantastic I remember the the freedom of you know growing up in that environment you know it is a beautiful place you know playing outside it was yeah it's it's a great environment and moving to Buckinghamshire has already been a stepping stone towards the good life I very recently gotten very excited about gardening so having not had a garden in London before the last year's it offered me an opportunity to grow a lot of plants it gives me a sense of focus it's very tranquil allows me to be quite reflective you know having a very busy life in London working and commuting it's a real contrast to that in Marlow what I found is that people are very friendly but it is a busy town and so I'm keen to look at options that give me more space and tranquility and cousin Hayley certainly thinks the move back home will give Becky a better quality of life I think Becky's lifestyle will change working in London we shall have that peace and quiet to come home to should be able to develop her hobbies in gardening she loves walking the dogs so there'd be beautiful walks that she can do yeah she'll just be more relaxed person at home [Music] mindful that Becky wants to move close to family we're focusing our property search in the south of Hampshire it's a location that keeps her commute time to London within two hours I'm meeting up with Becky and her cousin Hayley to begin this homecoming hasn't well Becky Hayley welcome to escape to the country welcome back to Hampshire thank you now your partner Dan he's a that's right so he's away how did it work so you've raped in your cousin to give you a bit of moral support Hayley I mean how did the family feel about this say they must be delighted very excited yeah Becky's mum is desperate for her to move move back so yeah that's that's my job to ensure she does tell us about the sort of property that you're hoping to buy so I would like a period property and something with a kitchen diner something that can be used you know through through the day and be social space yeah something that will allow Dan to her to tinker you know out building of some description doesn't have to be too exotic yeah at least three bedrooms yeah dan has two children and they will say with us very regularly I'm also keen to find a property that has an annex or potential for an annex I'm thinking ahead to you know relatives who might need accommodation in the future as they get more elderly okay the garden so that you know if it were established that would be great I'm not an experienced guy but it's certainly something I can can build on well that's a pretty good idea of what you're after how much are you going to spend well if it was really perfect and everything was done then possibly up to eight seven five we've got three properties to show you including the Mystery House of course a cup of tea before we go come on it for her maximum budget of 875 thousand pounds Becky is looking for a period property with three bedrooms and a kitchen diner that will be the hub of her home she'd like plenty of outside space in which to develop her gardening skills as well as an annex and ideally her new country home should give her an absolute maximum of a two hour commute to London we've lined up three fantastic properties for Becky and Hayley to view but it's only at the end of each tour that I'll reveal those price tags to them lastly they'll see the mystery house which may present Becky with the dilemma of whether to follow her head or her heart we're starting Becky's house search in locally to the west of the county from here it's just a 15-minute drive to the nearest London train connections locally is a small village at the heart of which is a classic green overlooked by charming character cottages residents benefit from essential amenities on their doorstep and are served by a grade 2 listed church a village shop and the local pub and on the edge of the village we find the first property tucked away down our driveway well I can only apologise for the weather goes now from here in fairness you can't really see the kind of geography of it but it's actually a semi-detached well would you have come to look at it knowing it was a semi-detached it looks really intriguing I'm interested to find out more first impressions always count go on Hayley what do you think this this bit looks stunning yeah yeah yes yeah that is impressed yeah yeah good she'll get out the rain to be fair the house doesn't have the most conventional exterior the original 1900 structure was extended 10 years ago resulting in a layout that only becomes clear as we go through it right guys in you come there you go so this is what greets you and I think it really does tell you about the finish of this property it looks lovely and I it is still slowly revealing itself so I'm thinking Haley because Becky's talked about this kitchen diner being so important maybe that's where we should start definitely yeah come on it I can't wait to see what you make of this Wow yeah it's amazing yeah it feels so spacious yeah because actually you know it I think the heights as well it is a really good space but it probably makes it feel even more spacious and open yeah absolutely all that and and the light that's coming in yeah it's oh my god yeah I think this is the sort of kitchen that you've described to me yeah oh it is I'm also and having the view outside it would be beautiful those yeah all of that just opened up you know and kind of yeah outside in living it was just that's exactly what they've done and you've got a little garden room next door which again has another set of bifold say the whole lot would open up so you can imagine entertaining in here yeah and again in no way overlooked by you know the neighbors I mean you don't really feel that it's a it's a semi okay let's um do a living room next yeah and this way just off the kitchen is a separate utility room also situated on the ground floor are a study and a downstairs cloakroom so this is the sitting room yeah it is smaller than I would have hoped for yeah and it doesn't have that fireplace that I would have hoped yes but the outlook is very very nice Serena's got in the double aspect there is no fireplace in the snug is that but let's have a look at the snow while we're down here before we go upstairs all right here we are you see like fireplace yes yes yeah that's Becky yeah that's not really yeah very comfy very well I think we go agree you know downstairs offers you lots of really lovely options as indeed does upstate come have a look up on the first floor there are four large bedrooms and a stylish generously sized bathroom as well as the all-important main bedroom so there this is for you and Dad ah it's beautiful yeah I mean it's so well done yeah really well done really light yeah is it's extraordinary yeah Cheryl sweet in there yeah and you've got the dual aspect which is really nice out onto paddocks yeah paddocks yeah neighbors over there the distance and of course the main garden which we'll go and explore in a moment and then we'll get you to guesstimate price yeah with the break in the rain it's time to take in the outdoor offerings of this property as well as boasting a good-sized lawn area there's a large Terrace access through bi-fold doors from the kitchen diner and garden room I think you could have a lot of fun here yeah you absolutely could you know I can just imagine how crazy your vlog is gonna go with your new obsession for built buying plants the green if there's any money left over of course of course yes so let's have a think about the price it's your buyers you should go first okay so I'm going to go for eight to ten I was gonna go straight eight hundred eight hundred thousand hands I can put a smile on your face I think with the price of this one this happily is on the market for 745 you surprised yeah well that's definitely food for thought yeah you price a bit of money to buy that green house well then why don't you wander around I will come and catch up with you a little bit later great thank you off you go coming in a substantial 130 thousand pounds under Becky's top budget this beautifully extended semi-detached property exceeds her wish list with four bedrooms and four reception rooms including that impressive kitchen diner it also offers plenty of scope for gardening and being set on the edge of the village of luckily provides good train links into London it is slightly more modern and updated than I had imagined but I actually really liked it I really enjoyed the environment and the light that it gave the property the downstairs is stunning absolutely stunning and and would suit Becky very very well the main thing was the large window in the kitchen diner which was very impressive the parts of the house that you know I need to think about really it doesn't have the annex which I had wanted the sitting room is a little smaller than would be idea although I do think the snug would actually still give a lot of practical living space I would just need to factor that into my thinking after you Becky good well there's no doubt that is the first property this one has set the bar pretty high yeah yeah definitely a great start I'd like new kitchen diners like that please would you know okay [Music] the river bewdley runs through the southern part of Hampshire's new forest on its banks lies the hamlet of buckless hard it was established in the 18th century as a shipbuilding Center some of the ships built here were used in the Battle of Trafalgar today it's a popular place for tourists who come to discover the local maritime history and enjoy the Riverside setting as they're keen to take up new hobbies together we've arranged for Becky and Hayley to explore this beautiful spot in the new forest by canoe they're meeting Sam Sutton who runs an activity center at nearby Bailey's heart so why did you pick this area well when you look at a map of the new forest the beauty very much jumps out to you one of the sort of major waterways that combined with the fact that a lot the forest has got local boy laws that restrict boating so bewdley being a private river had a landowner we could approach and our permission to run canoeing towards here once we're out in the water what can we expect to see well the river is famous and protected largely for its nesting birds there's a lot of salt marsh here so the birds will find kind of nice habitat set to be on so it's a great area for nesting birds a great area for wading birds as well as the sort of woodland of flora and fauna alright should we get you guys out on the water Navy days great lovely once kitted up in buoyancy aids they're taking to the water with their guide Andy Robertson at 12 miles long the river bewdley runs through the new forest before entering the sea at the Solent hence why the last 4 mile stretch is tidal the river is a designated site of Special Scientific Interest on account of its salt marsh riverbed and the ancient woodland along the banks it's incredibly rare to find these two environments nestled together and the area is carefully protected you need the one date and once you're on the water it's not long before they see the local wildlife that's a lot much light so sort of their home so certain times a year we don't go in any of the creeks so we don't disturb any of their nesting Patten's prior to its triple si status the river had been safeguarded by the Buena estate owners since the 12th century to preserve the natural habitats in this unique environment further on the river to a guide and he spots another creature underwater the jellyfish are under us in a minute [Music] jellyfish yeah will grow up to about sort of dinner plate size Wow jellyfish in the new forest why are they here what was awesome here well the moon jellyfish is actually really sort of diverse animal it will live in quite a lot of places and tidal s trees is one of their favorites because the beauty room is so quiet they have got but much of highest chance of survival in this river then sort of some of the busier ones that are around the area so what do you think of the Dooley River it's absolutely beautiful I didn't know that this existed this part of the river yeah it's stunning Becky certainly seems keen to embrace a serene pace of life let's hope her perfect country home will surface during our house hunt so she can achieve that all-important work-life balance next we're heading to Bassets on the edge of southampton a location which I think enjoys the best of both Town & Country Bassett is a 10 minute drive from rail connections to London that will keep Becky's commute well under two hours it's also just five minutes away from the village of Chill worth with its characterful gastropub that's very popular with the locals as is it's busy village hall the beautiful house we've come to see is just two miles from the centre of the village well guys this is probably not what you're expecting to see on the edge of house very this close to Southampton Center now the current owners have owned this for about eight years or so three years ago they set about remodeling what was a very small very pokey effectively a two-up two-down which was that bit okay they then added this wing wreath thatch the whole thing yeah what do you think of it Hayley it's very pretty it's been I'm amazed that that's that's new that wing it blends in so well yep I'm intrigued I have to say I did not expect that so I'm very intrigued with what's inside yeah the only way I can really make sense of this is to say to you because you are gonna get a treat built in 1864 this thatch property was the original gardener's cottage belonging to the local country estate and it's fair to say that this house has certainly been transformed from its humble roots right in you can take it all in yes it looks lovely I guess the initial thought sighs it is more modern than I would have initially looked for so I'm intrigued to see kind of how the character of the property took place out another word but come over here because you get a better sense of the sort of size of it they've hidden away the microwave in the wall for example the coffee machine is built in yes I was expecting a few more well as if I'm honest what I love about property is old and slightly gnarly and characterful and while it has great beams and you know the wood burner is beautiful there's quite a lot of modern influences in here more than I would necessarily pick out for myself okay well it's somewhat wonder too here then it's not classic you know what cottagey but I think there are enough elements here that would give me the bones to dress it that way if I wanted to I keep an open mind just go on go on come on let's have done it we could put some beams in if you really want it's nice yeah I like it I don't love it Jules I understand what Becky's saying there's any me that loves this I'm afraid so on this occasion potentially but we haven't seen upstairs you let's go stairs coming set across different levels that downstairs is mostly open plan but that's also a shower room and utility tucked away to the rear upstairs there's a good-sized family bathroom and for stylish bedrooms the two biggest within the extended part of the property including the main one stairs yeah well we are of course above the living room okay so it drops this drop so you get up I hope yes yes lovely ensuite in there too it's lovely but it's it's not for me I'm afraid okay so moving on Hayley how about for you then excellent you see how hard was that come on come with me [Music] well this too isn't going quite as I'd hoped but I think this property still has a lot to offer as we head outdoors the double garage could be really useful for Becky's partner dan and with an annex above it also delivers another of her property requirements right I'm not givin up Becky not yet it's been a bit more to show you behind us the summer house up there fully stocked bar and then another lovely sort of alfresco family area and dining area there all of which makes the best use of the Setting Sun over to the west in that direction but let's talk about the price shall we your cousin has upwards of eight hundred and seventy five thousand pounds to spend how much of that which you have to part with to buy property number two I'm gonna go with eight to five 825 825 thousand pounds okay I'm gonna go I'm gonna go fracture under you I'm gonna go eight to ten a ten yes this is on the market for I think a staggering 765 thousand pairs yeah I'm surprised I think it's a really good deal for somebody but maybe not for you I'm not gonna let you leave here until you have seen absolutely everything make sure no stone has been left unturned I will come and catch up with you a little bit later [Music] 110,000 pounds under Becky's maximum spend this thatch property offers all the space she's after with four bedrooms and high spec social open-plan living areas the garden offers great entertaining space and a lovely view and lots more it's all just a 10-minute Drive from train links which could provide Becky with a 19 minute commute when we came around the corner and saw the house I was very pleasantly surprised the thatch is absolutely beautiful the last point for the area is absolutely its proximity to road and rail links the house was beautiful but it's just not Warner for for what Becky is looking for have you dating girls good thank you good I've let you down little bit Jews the only way you would let me down was if you were not honest that's all I ask for so it's okay some you win some you lose come on it's going cry someone [Music] city worker Becky currently lives in Marlow Buckinghamshire and has eight hundred and seventy five thousand pounds to spend on a property that will bring her closer to family in Hampshire and keeping her company is cousin Hayley still to come we might be on track at the mystery house it's fantastic and I visit a colorful garden with over 500 years of history in its roots the red rose of Lancaster so 1450s yes I think there abouts I have to confess I might have expected it to look a bit redder yeah well as we head into our final day of house hunting here in Hampshire I'm a little bit disappointed if I'm really honest I thought yesterday would finish on a high both Haley and Becky wooed by the elegance and superb finish of our first two properties but let's face it I don't think we're any closer to a sale so what can we do about it well so far we've skirted around the property hot spot of the New Forest National Park trying to get Becky a little bit more value for money but with a budget of 875 thousand pounds at our disposal well maybe we should max it out we should spend it all and frankly this morning we are going to have to do that because our final property our mystery house is in the heart of the forest and for somebody who's now got a newfound passion for gardening well hopefully they should do the trick add full of eager anticipation on the road to the mystery house the three of us are getting into the rural spirit let's just check out your country credentials and let's check out your new noise go for it Becky do a move okay let's have us a li [Music] yay see Mike my my cattle are all Welsh so much more of a oh they don't get to the yeah I see I think yours are more definitely more to home county move for today's mystery property we're heading to the new forest close to the charming village of Burleigh it's a popular spot for tourists as it provides an excellent gateway to cycle routes through the forest itself and ponies roam freely as it's one of the last remaining villages where the old tradition of commoning is allowed and for those lucky enough to call this area home well there's a village store tea room restaurant and pub what's more it's all less than two hours from London by train and on the edge of the village is a mystery offering do you like so this is a mystery house and the reason is very simple we have thrown everything into the heart of the forest for you now the property itself was any built in 2008 now knowing that there can be issues with modern properties I'm crossing my fingers that you'll love the way this one has been laid out well it looks like they've done it amazingly well we can you can tell it's not a terribly old but it looks beautiful absolutely speechless lovely yeah I'm very excited to show you this one well we're off to a great start and although it's not even a decade old the character features of this mystery modern build are hitting the mark that Becky so I'm gonna give you a choice did we go left to the living room or did we go right to the kitchen let's go right yeah okay is it right though it's fantastic this is exactly what I had wanted big spacious light table in the middle it's absolutely beautiful yeah yes I mean it's a bit modern as you can see you've got oil-fired range there but yeah it's a classic farmhouse look this what would Dan think of this I think if there's tinkering space and garden he's a he's an outdoors guy so that's what will be most important to him okay so kitchen done living room lead on through there yeah it's lovely beautiful wood burner no mate amazing view out into what looks to be an absolutely amazing garden it will not disappoint you yeah it's fantastic with underfloor heating in here too yeah yeah and it's nice that the end of the flooring continues all the way through so it links these rooms I think stylistically beautifully let's have a look upstairs and have a look wrapping up down here there's also a WC now along with plenty of living space downstairs upstairs is no less impressive although there are just two large bedrooms up here the two on sweets are stunning this is the room I think you'd go for because it's ensuite has the roll-top bath and a bit more space yeah but they're all equipped with these lovely custom radiators they've all got lovely high ceilings and of course just layers of light flooding in yeah both sides yeah no it's perfect then you know it's room for storage yeah I'm surprised actually given its simplicity how much I do love it but I think it could really work good well if you love this you're gonna love the garden ID I adore it come and have a look set in half an acre a mystery house also benefits from a separate detached building that provides covered parking and a large double garage above there is space that Becky could convert into an annex but the plot is a gardeners delight with two Victorian style greenhouses a summer house and even a well my goodness yeah yep so Becky you want to be a gardener yep this would give me something to garden wouldn't it I actually think this is probably lower maintenance than you might think because once you're on top of the lawns and the hedging which is only you know really once a year the rest of it is a bit of careful pruning I think so Dan on hedging and lawns me on the pruning do something I think you about City sorted yeah so we should get down to the price shouldn't we what do you think a mystery house is on the market for well it's in the New Forest National Park so that adds a premium yeah I am going to go for 868 60 I was hoping for 850 this is on the market for 875 okay it's all of your budget but it could be all of your future yeah and nothing needs changing no that's great yeah it's yours go and have a good wander around celebrate it thank you off you go brilliant well there you go this is an absolutely stunning property I think for most people who imagine living in the heart of the new forest this is what it's all about provided of course you can afford it at 875 thousand pounds our mystery property is right at the top of Becky's budget however it would give her a detached house with two bedrooms as well as modern but characterful living and dining spaces the beautiful wraparound garden provides authentic rural seclusion and it's situated in the heart of the new forest so maybe Dan could tinker up here have you seen this card don't take her outfit I love this house it's not what I would have expected to have really loved because it's modern but it is done so well and it feels very traditional the setting you know I said I love the new forest it couldn't be more New Forest II the girl who's lovely over those green houses those glass houses have we made they're too pretty for plants it's a gorgeous house I mean you couldn't have chosen a better house it's it's very Becky I love it you know I have to say I do think this is the nicest house I've had the chance to sell in the new forest well it is lovely I really have fall in love with it I just need to engage the head a little bit hmm I'm did you do and I think Hayley's also falling in love with it so there may be some competition for this one who knows but yeah we need to get you somewhere where you can talk it through between you and then we see what happens next come on let's go [Music] roses are a classic feature of any English country garden a modest font a beanie Romsey in the center of Hampshire is one of the finest places in the summer to enjoy these quintessentially British blues so I've come to meet Head Gardener Johnny Norton to discover more about this rare collection of pre 1900 roses this is gorgeous absolutely stunning there is nothing quite like a bountiful and beautiful walled kitchen-garden in full bloom it's phenomenal I keep pinching myself actually that I'm here looking after this incredible garden perhaps you could give me you know a trip around the highlights or maybe some of your favorites yeah well I mean the sky's the limit Jules but I think you're a history man I am okay so I've got exactly the Rose for you come this way here at Montes font Abbey there are over 700 types of roses some of which date back to the Crusades the collection was established here in 1971 by renowned botanist Graham Stewart Thomas remember War of the Roses the red rose of Lancaster so that this is an ancient rose rose officinalis the Apothecary rose it dates back prior to that it really is ancient so 1450s yes I think they're about I have to confess I might have expected it to look a bit redder yeah so the rose has come coming to its close in terms of its flowering period and these last few flowers that we're seeing a slightly fading but they start off quite a vibrant red color actually is it possible to have a favorite yeah I mean to be honest my favorite changes from from week to week but right now there's this one very pale powdery pale very pretty rose and it's this way if you don't mind Holly the walls surrounding the garden are not only a perfect backdrop for climbing varieties but also provide shelter for the more delicate roses so here Jules this this for me right now is it has to be one of my favorite roses it looks absolutely stunning in this sunlight isn't it it's everything a rose should be but but dates right back to the kind of early eighteen hundreds were princess Josephine absolutely this Rose is called souvenir della Malmaison and she actually introduced over 200 rose virata's from Chateau Malmaison that's what this gardens all about is saving and keeping and promoting great garden plants like this this fast garden is maintained by a team of volunteers and eight full-time gardeners including Victoria escort senior gardener here at Mater sponsor Victoria you're clearly doing a brilliant job a far better job of deadheading than I ever do on my roses how big a job is it for you it's a massive job but luckily we have a lot of volunteers helping us so we're not doing it single-handedly but yes throughout June and into July we spend a lot of our time deadheading but if anybody thinking of growing roses who perhaps hasn't got any yet how easy is it there is this myth of roses that they're they're difficult to grow I don't quite know why but but they're a straightforward plant they're a shrub after all like any other shrub yeah plant them at the right time of year try to plant a rose in the winter or in the emerging spring where there's lots of moisture in the soil but so many people have taken roses out saying that oh it's not doing anything give it time this is a plant that's going to be there for a very long time you know it's going to fly a few for decades to come they're survivors after all they're still here so they've been surviving for hundreds and hundreds of years and there's a good reason is because they're good garden plants well it is a wonderful collection Johnny thanks very much for sure that's a pleasure it's amazing to see both horticulture and history being preserved so perfectly and they better time to see it than when everything is in full bloom while Becky's fabulous budget this week has given us some truly beautiful buildings to look at but of course she can choose only one but my suspicion is that her mind is already made up what have you doing good look at this when it was all to play for this morning when we set off to find mystery house so Becky I think it's fair to say that is the contender at the moment it's the favorite house yeah by a long way and that particular part of the new forest is beautiful I was quite surprised that it was a more modern house then I would have anticipated I would have fallen in love with but fall in love I did that garden was phenomenal I mean it is the garden of dreams for me so what happens next then is phoned up is ushered down here yes it's more of looking into those practicalities thinking about the transport links and how that works in practice given my commute to London you must be quite relieved that potentially you know Becky could be effectively your neighbor very soon on my doorstep yeah I mean I can't wait for her to move back it'd be it'd be great and I would be more than happy to do that house good well I wish you all the best of luck I hope Dan loves it as much as we have but let us know what the final decision is in due course thank has ended on a high in the heart of the new forest there's no doubt that if Becky is able to buy that mystery house she will find herself living in one of the most beguiling and ancient tracts of landscape anywhere in England now of course the irony is there's nothing really very new about the new forest it dates back to 1079 when it was created by William the Conqueror in those days it was known by its Latin name as the Nova Foresta or new hunting ground well we've certainly had lots to hunt and lots to chase here this week and now hopefully Becky has a new home to enjoy I'll see you
