[Music] foreign it's Saturday before Escape from Alcatraz which happens in San Francisco California ready for a swim not at Aquatic Park no that's where everybody does their pre-race swim we have a secret spot that's not going to be a secret anymore we live right north of the Golden Gate Bridge I'm gonna just kind of shake and bake down there for a little bit feels really good to not have to go anywhere in order to prep for this race it's very calm feels normal the Tide's really low right now Miguel's doing the escape from Alcatraz this year there's seven Pros doing it competitors are going to be swimming 1.5 miles from Alcatraz [Music] from a boat into the coast water temp is approximately 54 degrees right now [Music] wait I'm gonna wait 30 seconds for me okay please a 18-mile bike through San Francisco foreign the course a couple times this week taking the corners at race pace and then finishing with an eight mile run most of it is on dirt and trails a mile out and a mile back on a beach there's the infamous sand ladder I know you're gonna blow your taper going back up [Music] The Tide is really strong the flow of water is really strong right now and I think it's supposed to be 54-ish air tab with fog as usual I'm tired I haven't done the first piece of it but you know who is going to be doing it our guest this morning San Francisco native Miguel Maddox good morning Miguel feels really special to have my gal racing this race this year we both grew up in the area I'll do four-hour races generally I'll do half Ironman distances so this is actually kind of a shorter race for me I think all of Mill Valley and all of Miguel's family that lives around here will be here taking videos and cheering for him harder intense workouts on the in the pool and the bay um doing more hill climbs on the bike doing more hill climbs on the run and then sleeping like a champ Miguel I'm just like looking at you in these pictures feels good to be in a little Hometown boy how are you mentally gearing up for escape from Alcatraz especially because the website says there are sharks in the bay I don't think I was thinking about sharks until you brought it up sorry about that mentally this is a a different kind of year for me this is my first year racing as a professional excited to see how Miguel does right now I'm just learning a lot about my own capabilities and how I stack up to other Professionals in the field yeah no matter what it'll be a beautiful day there are only seven professionals doing this race so there isn't really anywhere to hide yeah it'll be really exciting hi how's the swim toasty ultimately our goal in all of this is to grow our own community and to give back as much as we can I love that we will stay in contact with you because I know some so many people are inspired by this but might not know if they can start where to start so I think that part of it is really important too yesterday and today my swim is really finding a good Rhythm and Open Water feel good and feel fresh feel like I can just hold a really good taste for a long time and not get tired right now we are going to be rooting for you no sharks are going to come near you because you're going to be like bye let's go eat on the move again eat already yeah it's gonna be a great race and we're excited for you our small little local race the escape from Alcatraz a lot of people have been asking where Miguel's pre-raised tuna sandwiches have gone thank you [Music] so now you have the what the pro meeting coming up in a bit I've been really enjoying that bike with a lot of climbing like it's fun put on the shoes on my run yesterday I feel really fast and I think I'm gonna go sockless tomorrow I think the field will get get spread out in general and it's going to be a feel thing oh I only got 14 minutes left on this card [Applause] [Music] I've always looked at it I've driven over this bridge a thousand times I went to high school in middle school 20 minutes away from here but I've never actually tried to escape and not the trash thank you not at the race venue today you're not allowed in here yeah I am I asked nicely it is a race morning at the escape from Alcatraz it is eerily quiet here right now [Music] I'm just standing in line it's like the thing is everybody is gonna get on a bus you know yes it's not like they're gonna make a cut off in the line being like this is 5 45 everyone here isn't gonna make it where's the VIP experience with this where's our limo your stretch Hummer limo all right the end of the lines right here all right all right this is us let's do it remember you're the Caboose forever and always I don't know about forever [Music] I'll see you like right here okay go crashes oh everybody popped onto the shuttles to head to the ferry to go out to Alcatraz we made it onto the boat [Music] [Music] [Music] gonna stand up about 10 minutes get warmed up it's nice being on the upper deck here there's plenty of room to even like get some strides in [Music] fur and they're off all right seeing a couple splashes right here whoever that is caught a crazy current everybody else is swimming in a pack behind this lead vote he's got a current or something out there come on Miguel [Music] nice swim Miguel had an amazing swim Mark dubrick was out first he caught some wild line coming in and destroyed everyone Miguel came out right after Eric from T1 so he's sitting in third right now if you look really confident getting on the bike so let me deciding to see how things shake out for him foreign very encouraging update coming in at Mile 13 the girls right ahead of Eric I don't know if they're still together or what they're both catching up to mark [Music] and gaining a little time on their Gap with Jason which is amazing you can pee I need to find Marty okay [Music] all right who's next nervous time there's Miguel [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] Miguel looks really relaxed for his first time doing this course nice job Jason oh let's go long ways to catch up yeah currently sitting in third two minutes up from four 40 seconds down from Eric Eric got a little time on him he's a veteran he won this race last year and dude he's right there Miguel is confident he knows what he needs to do he wears trail shoes pressure and expectations can really get to you when you don't know what lies ahead but I think he's also given we got a lot of confidence Miguel just finished seeing ladder he did that really fast 13 seconds down from Eric still sitting pretty in third he went so fast up the sand ladder [Music] holy moly mark dubrick what the heck man [Music] Miguel still in third at Mile seven what were you expect like not or more faster or what no I was just like you're gonna go out there and have a great time oh my God [Music] foreign the current was so strong it was pushing people past the Golden Gate looked just marching [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] yes sir [Music]
