we'll say the blessing [Music] there's a story from the late rabbi karba and i uh i've told it before and and uh as i think we all need reminders that even when we think we know where we're going we may not always know why we're going there the story goes like this by the one year about a week before yom kippur a young man set out to be with the ball shem tov the founder of the hasidic movement for the holiest day of the year now the balshem was a great and a holy master and it was clear to the young man that this was a very great and holy journey but everything seemed to go wrong the reins were heavy and the cart turned over in the mud and when the car was right the horse no longer trot at a decent pace and the young man began to despair about reaching the balshem to have in time when he was still about oh about a day's journey away he the man saw a group of shabbily dressed men waving him to the side of the road how there brother friend we are desperate for it for a tenth man to join us for yom kippur so we can have a minion for the proper service won't you stop and pray with us are you kidding replied the young man i'm on my way to to see the ball shem tov and the young man took off well shortly before the young the young keepers services were about to begin the young man arrived at the basham tov shul where the great and holy master was shaking hands with all the men the young men got online but when his turn came the ball she told pastor without saying a word the man was terribly upset and after the close of yom kippur after close of nila he approached the ball of shem tov and he said holy master why did you not shake my hand don't you know siddhibal shem tov they were that you were brought into this world only to join those nine men in prayer i love this story because it teaches us that each one of us each one of us has a unique purpose in this world no one else can do what we alone are here to do but discerning this our purpose in this world it's not easy we are so distracted by big names and bright lights by fame by fortune by what our peers hold as as important so we must search our innermost hearts and souls to know what god wants us to really do and really be and where god really wants us to go amen we turn now in our makhsaurum and our high holy holy day prayer books to page 397 397 the bottom of the page or zarua page 9397 cousin book of life for a happy healthy good year thank you thank you barbara a a wonderful story that's told about the hasidic rebbe elimeler of lugensk and he was asked by one of his tall meeting by one of his students how should a person pray for forgiveness told the student to observe the behavior of a certain innkeeper before yom kippur and the disciple then went on to say that innkeeper is in and he observed the innkeeper for a number of days but the student could not see anything relevant to his question about what he had asked rabbi ellie how does a person pray for forgiveness but then on the night before yom kippur the man saw the innkeeper open open up two large ledgers from the first ledger he read a list of all the sins that he had committed during the past year when he finished the innkeeper opened the second ledger and proceeded to recite all the bad things that had happened to him during the past year when he finally completed reading both ledgers the innkeeper lifted his eyes to heaven he said you want to shall alam dear god it is true i have sinned against you but you god you have done many distressful things to me too however we're now beginning a shana tova a new year let us wipe the slate clean i'll forgive you and you will forgive me friends as we see in this story part of our challenge on yom kippur is to make peace with god and that means our forgiving god even as you hope that god will forgive us obviously such forgiveness can be difficult especially this past year which has been filled with so much suffering as all of us have witnessed with this pandemic of covert 19. when it comes to god we're taught that such forgiveness is possible and we hope to leave these young keepers services lightened by our mutual forgiveness with the almighty indeed this is traditionally an important part of our yom kippur observance namely god and we get to start anew all over again but there's another very important aspect of yom kippur and that is if only we if only you and i could forgive each other in such a way unfortunately when it comes to other human beings such forgiveness often seems impossible to achieve when it comes to the pain another that another person has caused us there's simply no such thing as unconditional forgiveness isn't it sad but true that many of us have names and faces of individuals whom we are not able to forgive etched in our own minds one of the tragic things about life is that sooner or later someone will hurt us and we will find ourselves wondering whether or not we can ever forgive that individual we'll ponder how we can forgive those who've wronged us or insulted us we'll think about how we could ever even consider forgiving those whom we swore we would never speak to again on the one hand we may feel that we have no need to forgive indeed those who have hurt us may not even be asking for our forgiveness they may not even know that they've they've hurt us they may not even still be alive but on the other hand we also know that without forgiving those who have hurt us we ourselves may be carrying a burden so heavy that every single day is filled with our needless pain and suffering and we wonder if we can forgive those who have hurt us will that pain finally go away we will we be relieved of this constant drain on our on our emotions and one side of wisdom is learning to know the difference between meaningless irritations and honest to goodness pain and when it comes to forgiveness even when true pain is involved there is a simple method to help us accomplish this most difficult of tasks the trick is to identify the obstacles in our way and then try to overcome those obstacles when it comes to forgiveness the first obstacle to consider is a perverse nature we might find in not forgiving someone you know being human it's easy to hang on to our resentment unfortunately the anger and the pain that we feel that can hurt us more than the person who even even caused that pain in the first place another obstacle to forgiveness is that so often we don't understand what forgiveness really really means for instance we tend to confuse forgiving with forgetting but you know they're not the same thing there are times when we will forgive those who have hurt us even though we cannot forget forgiveness is not saying i don't feel the pain anymore forgiveness is saying to the one who hurt us i don't feel the need to hold on to my pain anymore forgiveness is not forgetting forgiveness is choosing not to actively remember it's also important to note that forgiveness does not mean condoning an action you don't have to tolerate what someone has done to you in order to forgive them in other words you can forgive someone and still not approve of their behavior you can forgive them and still refuse to accept what they have done to you why why is that because at its very essence forgiving is not about the people who have hurt us forgiving is about healing ourselves after we have been hurt an additional obstacle to our forgiving perhaps the biggest obstacle of all is that forgiveness offends the rational mind if we really really think about it this makes perfect sense when someone hurts us when someone has stolen something or someone from us there is no reason why we should let that offense go there is no reason why we should necessarily find compassion in our hearts for the wrong which the perpetrator committed against us but the fact that we can find no rationale for forgiveness doesn't necessarily mean that we should not forgive may mean perhaps that we should stop being so rational in this particular case i believe this is necessary because without giving up the resentment even when such anger is reasonable we can never ever honestly fear ourselves from the pain and suffering which we do not deserve i believe that this is a true meaning of forgiveness we don't pardon the person who has hurt us instead we simply decide to move on with our lives we move on because life is much too short life is much too rich and life is much too wonderful to waste on the negative feelings of anger and resentment which may be our right to own but also those negative feelings will never ever let us be truly healed and so we bid those feelings goodbye not because those who hurt us hurt us deserve it because we deserve it this is what forgiveness this is what is all about and yom kippur is the time to let it happen it's time to say to those whose hurt we still carry that we forgive them and that we are moving on and so i invite you to join me to go on a journey right now i ask that all of us who have been hurt to imagine the person or the persons who have hurt and angered us the most let's see them standing before us and let's say to them face to face on this the holiest night of in the year on this cold nigerian night of the holiest day of the year on this yom kippur i forgive you i will never forget how deeply you hurt me but i can and i will forgive you because i am moving on with my life i will not i refuse to let past pain and resentment pull me down i release my anger and my hatred i forgive you friends i hope and i pray that these words ritual will bring us a release from which so many of us deserve and i conclude with one final observation you know there's a place in death valley and the place is known as dante's view and from that particular vantage point we have a choice we either look down nearly some some 300 feet to the lowest spot in the continental united states it's a place called bad weather basement basin or we can look up some 14 500 feet and see mount whitney the highest peak in the continental united states from this point of dante's view we can choose to feast our eyes on the highest or the lowest points it's our choice and so on this holiness of nights on this yom kippur night i hope that we will make the right choice and then we will that we will begin this new year a new life a year of hope a year of good health a year of happiness a year of love and a year of forgiveness may all of us be sealed in the safe in the book of life for this new year 57 81 and let us say amen okay we turn now in our
