welcome back to 32 bar cut today i want to talk about how i maintain my body my mind my spirit every week so that i'm able to do eight shows a week my name is adrian walker and i am a broadway performer i want to share with you what i've learned about the business so far welcome to 32 bar cut firstly i like to drink or as close as i can drink a gallon of water a day and i realized that i can do this by getting a big bottle i hope you can see my name labeled on here because i have one here at the house and i have one at the theater and basically this bottle is almost a gallon and it kind of gives you a timetable to encourage you to drink throughout the day i don't really wake up at seven o'clock so i use my own timetable but i found that this bottle is very easy for me to use if you pop open the top it has a little straw it comes with a brush for you to wash it it's great secondly i like to steam i've been steaming for years i've been steaming since i was in undergrad and it's just a great way to keep your vocal cords hydrated and limber and ready to sing and so when i first started at the lion king i was unable to steam in between shows because i usually kept my makeup on and uh the steamers that i had covered most of my face or a good portion of my face and one day i saw that stephen carlisle who plays scar was steaming with this porcelain apparatus and so he told me how to get one uh they're from london and it comes with a little spout so you're able to steam you just pour hot steaming water in here drop it in here and then you're able to steam that way and it's really great for keeping your voice hydrated in between shows or for anything if you're feeling ill before you're about to do something you can take care of yourself in this way not everyone can get their hands on one of these it was like a special order we had to get an email address and everything but i only say this to say please find some way to steam for your voice because it's a great way to take care of your voice when i first got to the lion king i found out pretty quickly that the show was extremely physical more physical than anything i had ever done prior to and i realized pretty quickly that i'd have to have some type of strengthening regimen to keep me healthy and safe safe meaning not injured on stage and just prepared for the show every week every day and so i signed up for pilates and i've been taking pilates very regularly uh since i want to say about three months into starting the show and it's completely changed my flexibility it's completely altered how i access my muscles and engage my muscles when i'm on stage and i just recommend it for everybody if you're able try something like pilates or yoga it's really great for maintaining your body and keeping you from getting injured on stage i also love this device it's called the hypervolt i got this while i was in kiss me kate one of the dancers uh she got the hookup with the hypervolt and got us a group uh a group sales discount and so i've had this ever since and it's a really great tool for uh recovering your muscles so look this up i'll put the link in below i want to talk about not overextending yourself i love opportunities love opportunities i have such a hard time saying no i love to sing and perform whenever i can but this also means that sometimes i can't because i need to take care of myself so i just want to encourage you to always listen to your body listen to your voice make sure that you are maintaining yourself as well as you can and that you're not overextending yourself when you overextend yourself you leave room and opportunity to get injured and you only have one body you've only got one voice and they are both so so so precious so you've got to take care of them and treat them tenderly like the precious items that they are lastly i want to talk about just making sure that you still find joy in what you're doing and in the moments that you don't that you take a moment to step away refresh yourself and come back to it find things that you like outside of theater find other hobbies that bring joy to you that make you happy that you look forward to uh when you completely you know drown yourself in one thing and that thing lets you down you're kind of setting yourself up to feel pretty bad so my suggestion is to stay well-rounded being well-rounded can only enrich your performance as an actor thank you for watching please subscribe and i'll see you next week
