hello this is jack from tofluency.com and welcome to this english lesson where we're going to do a few things today we're going to look at some verb pattern examples and if you are here live then i want you to give me some examples in the live chat and don't do that just yet but we'll do that soon we're also going to look at some apps that you can use to learn english and i also have an article to read to you so see this as about an hour-long english lesson where you can just relax and learn english with me now i do want to share a couple of things first if you go to the description you're going to find a link to a verb patterns video which just gives an outline on how to use verb patterns and there's also a playlist there too you're also going to find a link to my book the five step plan for english fluency this is free to download and then you're also going to find a link or you might be able to find it on this page somewhere maybe below the video where you can join this channel as a member this is something new and i'm very excited about this because it's going to allow me to grow the channel and also offer additional things in addition to the videos that i make here so with all that in mind press the like button consider joining the channel if you're new subscribe and also turn on the notification bell now i also want to mention that i finally worked out how to use my camera to go live here on youtube and i'm going to show you a couple of things firstly we're going to look at these this verb pattern video we're not going to watch the video but we're going to read the description because this is something i've done before and this is going to help us when it comes to going through the verb patterns oh there's that join button that i was talking about and then also i have some more phrases for you some verb pattern phrases for you so first i just want to say hi to people in the live chat we have a lot of people here uh daniel esme roman fatima kevin k talestan hello jack i'm lulian from romania and i want to salute you thank you very much i'll just say hi to everyone in the chat hello everyone um yeah so welcome let's get started with the lesson we're gonna go to this part here and on your screen should be this now now again i've left a link to this video so you can watch it later but i want to go through the text first and i'll just make this a little bit bigger so you can read it better how does that look how does that look hopefully it's a lot better so this english lesson explains when to use the infinitive after verbs and also when to use the gerund after verbs because when we're using verb patterns this is when we use two verbs together now just give you a quick example i hate doing my taxes i hate doing my taxes which is true i hate doing them this year was a lot easier though because i've i have simplified everything but in the us there's quite a lot of things you have to do in order to submit your taxes and i hate doing my taxes i put it off but you can see here how we have two verbs hate and then do i hate to do but a verb pattern means that after you use the first verb the second verb is either in the gerund or the infinitive or maybe something a little bit different and we'll look at some examples of that soon so we can as you either use the infinitive or the gerund for example i want to see her i enjoy seeing her i want to see her i enjoy seeing her now when it comes to learning this i highly recommend learning through sentences and if you have been following me for some time you'll know just how important i think sentences are that is how you're going to really understand these verb patterns okay so learn english through sentences actually in that video too there is a free guide free gift of verb patterns to fluency.com check that out later so these are the examples i say the bad news is this there are no rules to tell you how to do this so the bad news is you can't really think about the rules when using this you just have to learn them the good news is at to fluency we do things differently and be sure to get your free gift um as it shows you how to use our method and how you'll get 35 sentences and your mp3 file so that's going to allow you to learn these types of verb patterns but the first the first pattern is this a verb plus prepositions plus the gerund and that's something we looked at recently okay so this is when we add in something different when we add in a preposition as well now i made a lesson on this very recently so you can go back and watch this the other thing i want to say is more than one person so when you're putting some kind of subject in there too it changes things okay for example i want him to do it this is one of the most i think the one of the most important sentences in english for a lot of people because it's very rare that someone says this correctly what but it's quite a simple sentence at the same time i want him to do it she asked me to give it to her so this one is really complex she asked me to give it to her now i'm not going to go through all of this now because it's important to learn through sentences on your own time so again go to tofluency.com vp and you can get that free gift okay what i want to do now is go through some sentences using these verb patterns and then for you to practice now if you're watching this live then in the live chat be sure to put your examples in the live chat if you are watching the replay then put your examples as a comment but put all your examples and then post the comment okay it makes things a lot easier when it comes to me looking at the the examples how is the audio someone says hey dude can you speak up a little bit please let me know if the audio is okay just in the live chat say yes or no yes or no um that will really help me i think it should be okay i'm just gonna go to the live chat excuse me um gerund is to make a noun from verbs am i right yeah you can do that as well um you can use the gerund to make a noun verbs um that's true but in this case what we're doing is we're using the gerund after a verb so it's one verb and then another verb so people are saying the sound is okay which is good maybe you need to turn the sound up on your um computer or a smartphone all right so let's go back to this now i hate doing my taxes so can you give some more examples what do you hate doing i hate waking up early in the morning for example or i hate having to get up early after going out the night before i hate having to get up early so can you give some more examples of hate i hate being lazy iqran says which is good another thing is i hate i hate trying to get my camera to work sometimes because it's very what we can call fiddly fiddly which means it's very difficult to just to get right it's very fiddly little things that are annoying with it um a lot of people are using um like but let's try and stay on topic with hate i hate waking up early with nothing to eat i hate waking up early with nothing to eat i hate being late that's a good one if you're watching the replay you can see these comments later so i hate being late again it's a really good one i hate being late i hate being late too i don't like it i don't like it i hate listening to loud music i hate procrastinating very good i hate procrastinating i hate telling the truth that's an interesting one okay um cristina pardo i'm from valencia i'm looking forward to being a fluent english speaker i lived in valencia for a year it's a fantastic place all right next one okay let's do uh this one very simple i enjoy playing football i enjoy playing football so we're using the verb enjoy and then playing so we're using the gerund again here i enjoy playing football can you give a sentence with i enjoy and then complete this sentence i'll just give some more examples of hate i hate being sick i hate making mistakes i hate studying english well it depends how you study right i hate seeing injustice i hate missing your live stream that's a good one well you're here today and it's great to have you again just click that like button if you are enjoying this lesson i'll give some more examples um i enjoy getting outside after being inside all day so enjoy getting outside i enjoy learning english with jack i enjoy working out i enjoy watching your live lessons i enjoy reading novels i enjoy playing video games i enjoy going uh oh i enjoy gazing at the night sky well that's lovely these are really good examples a lot of people are saying i enjoy learning english um which is great it's so important that you enjoy it that you have a good time learning english at the moment i can say i am really enjoying okay i'll put this in the the chat too i am really enjoying it's a really good sentence i'm really enjoying learning about history at the moment i am really enjoying learning about history so when we're using these sentences too think about how you can use them in different tenses okay i think you're really going to enjoy doing this so i think you're going to enjoy doing this i think you're really going to enjoy learning english with me i enjoy painting i enjoy reading books very good okay let's go to the next one this one is just a simple one that we talked about before i want you to do it so no need to give more examples here but i want you to do it i want you to go there i want you to stop i want you to i want you to be better i want you to do more i want you to work harder i want you to so parents use this a lot and teachers use this a lot too now this is a good one my parents never let me stay up late this one is a little bit more complicated just look at the sentence structure here my parents never let me stay up late my parents never let me stay up late so we're using let here and with let we use what's called the bare infinitive where we don't say to stay up but just stay up let me do it let me do it is another examples let me do it let me go let me let me stay out longer so it's a really good one my parents never let me stay up late and i'm just going to move my make this smaller so you can see the examples look how small i am now hello i'm tiny down here um my parents never let me stay up late so can you give more examples with that that one but this is actually this could be present tense or past tense we don't really know but i can say when i was younger my parents never let me stay up late right now my parents never let me stay up late even though i am 37. okay let me dream let me do what i want let me go where i want let me go shopping yeah good examples everybody now a similar example to to let is make he made me do it so it's similar because he let me do it has the same pattern he made me do it i didn't want to do it but he made me do it he made me do it so it's a good one could you give me some more examples with this okay so make make me do it make me that's quite a common thing to say if somebody's getting quite aggressive make me go on make me make me do it it's more of an aggressive example my teachers let me cheat in my exams that's quite interesting i wonder if that is true or you're just giving a good example my sister never let me use her cell phone that is such a good example my sister never let me use her cell phone yeah great example my sister never let me play when her friends were over you make me laugh he made me cry make me happy make me happy he made me go make me play video games he made me read books make me smile yeah i like those ones he made me smile he made me laugh he made me angry he made me scared at times he made me smile so all these different examples make me tea yeah make me some tea come on make me some tea hurry up make me some tea all right let's do uh this one next i don't want to so again after one we use to play to go to c i don't want to play football now this time try to use it in either the past tense or the future tense okay so for example i didn't want to or he's going to want to i think i want to try and do this in either the past or the future to talk about the past or the future also try to use it in the present perfect too it's really good it it's really good practice when you're when you use it in different tenses my parents never let me drink beer i don't want to give up learning english wow so what we're doing here is we're using verve verb so i don't want to give up learning english which is good i didn't want to go out i didn't want to listen to my sisters i don't want to lose money i will not want to learn french these are good examples everybody very good examples again if you're watching the replay then you can leave your examples in the comment section below too i didn't want to go there daniel good one i didn't want to believe him she didn't buy me a gift for my birthday i didn't want to be so stupid that's a good one i don't want the coronavirus to spread around the world i don't want to lose my mind i don't want to lose my english i didn't want to get up early very good so these are great examples again just simple sentences that are important to to know these kind of patterns now the next one is um this one there are two examples here look at the first one i remember going there as a kid remember to lock the door so we have two examples one with the gerund one with the infinitive i remember going there as a kid remember to lock the door so just think about what these two things mean the first one i remember going there as a kid it's talking about a memory in the past i remember doing it i think i remember going there as a kid i think i remember going there as a kid so you can see here we're talking about memories in the past this one remember to lock the door this is saying this is giving a reminder to somebody remember to lock the door remember to call the insurance company remember to pay that bill today okay so it's more used as a reminder this is a memory in the past i remember going there as a kid so we've got some examples here i remember dancing in the grass you guys are so poetic romantic remember to smile every day remember to read the books i remember being lost at the kid i remember being lost at the beach as a kid i remember being lost at the beach as a kid i remember to do my english homework i remember when we fell in love together i remember writing my homework these are good yeah and you can use this type of intonation and stress i think i remember doing my homework i think i remember going there so this is a way for you to to use that intonation if you want to stress something about it now if you're just joining live we are talking about verb patterns in english and we're getting so many great examples in the chat remember to make an appointment remember to pick up mummy later that's a good one i remember watching this video in a dream remember to buy some bread yeah it's good for shopping i'll say to my wife you know remember to get some milk later remember for me i always say remember to get eggs and bacon or bacon and eggs remember to get bacon and eggs it's important for me to get bacon and eggs remember to get bacon and eggs all right let's go back to more examples this one's important as well because we can use this in different ways too with stop he has finally stopped smoking he's finally stopped smoking now something i want to also teach at this stage is when you use verb patterns the second pattern is always the same it doesn't matter what text you what tense you use so he's going to stop smoking he stopped smoking i think he should stop smoking it's always the same which is good but this one he's finally stopped smoking we use the gerund after stop when it's some type of habit okay so he's finally stopped smoking which is good news he has finally stopped smoking so that's another good one to to to learn um okay good let's just see do i have any more of these we'll just do a little review i hate doing my taxes i love doing my taxes my parents never let me stay up late my parents made me come home early i didn't i don't want to play football i enjoy playing football i find he's finally stopped smoking i want you to do it i remember going there as a kid and remember to lock the door so after watching this lesson remember to go to this video there's a link in the comment section or in the description and it's actually there's a playlist you can watch but this just goes through um the different types of verb patterns and it just gives a more formal lesson on it there's also a free gift that you can get to fluency.com vp good all right i'm just going to go um into the chat box and just see what people are saying i finally finished my homework i finally stopped doing stupid things she's finally started reading she's finally ended reading that book he's finally turned up so people are using finally here in different ways which is great all right so that's part one of the lesson we are now going to go to if i click this and then click over here this is my website tofluency.com and i want to just talk about what i think are the seven best apps for english language learners and these are apps that i have used that other students have used and i think they're really useful if you are an english learner now i'm just going to resize it so you can see um the article there we go perfect and i don't have to make myself so small but these are apps that you're going to find very useful and if you want to to learn about these apps then go click the link in the description and then you'll be able to click the links over here and then learn more about these apps but the first one is called grammarly now grammarly is fantastic if you want to not just improve your writing but improve your grammar at the same time because what it does is it corrects your english when you make mistakes now as an english teacher and a native speaker i love grammarly i use it all the time i have it embedded on my computer so that it tells me when i make certain mistakes this could be an error or just like a sentence structure mistake it is one of the best tools for english language learners because if if you use it and you're writing on facebook it's going to tell you when you make grammar mistakes simple ones verb patterns so if you say um i enjoy to do it it's going to tell you no i enjoy doing it it is a fantastic app there are mobile keyboards that you can use so you can use it on your phone but i just use it on my computer and when i'm writing it shows me the mistakes i'm making now the next one is anki okay anki and i've just said here digital flash cards everywhere now again i recommend clicking the link to this i'll put it in the live chat as well in case if you're using a computer then you'll be able to open this up and have a look at it and save it for later but anki allows you to either create your own digital flash cards or to download digital flash cards and as part of the to fluency program i have over a thousand flash cards that you can download and import into anki now the key to this is learning sentences but getting the right type of repetition because you don't want to have to repeat sentences more than you need to and what anki does is it gives you sentences when you need to see them and you can do this with written sentences and also audio sentences too so anki is fantastic it's all part of my teaching method which is to get long-term repetition through sentences so definitely consider getting anki the next one is hellotalk okay and this is where you can get speaking practice with people from all over the world so think of it as like just a language exchange platform or a platform which you can use to just join and speak to other people you can download it where's my phone on your phone or you can just use your computer so you can use a website or your phone and it's just gonna give you the ability to chat with people in real time and it's free to use so that is hello talk the next one is udemy where you can take courses for english language learners now i'm thinking about creating some new courses on the udemy platform i'm going to focus on things like phrasal verbs verb patterns tenses and just give you a big overview and give you sentences as well but at the moment you can find other courses from english language teachers now i'm going to put this one in here too which is the bbc learning english app and this allows you to learn english through the news so you can learn new vocabulary take grammar lessons and improve your pronunciation by taking the lessons and it's all based on the news so if you enjoy reading and watching news then this app will be really useful for you again there's a link in the description so you can download all these apps next one is italki now italki have sponsored some videos here on the youtube uh to fluency channel and this is where instead of getting a language exchange through hellotalk you can find a teacher okay and this allows you to find a teacher uh whether this is a qualified teacher or just somebody who can have conversations with you there are also language exchanges on there too now there is an offer for to fluency channel members if you click the link down here so go to my website first to get that 10 i think it's ten dollars in free credit if you go down there and then the last one is link now this is a great platform because it's similar to anki but it allows you to create your own flash cards through the platform now when i first started this it was all about a writing platform where you could present your writing and then people would correct it for you and i think they still have this but it's become more of a community-based website now now i'm not sure i think yeah they do have an app so you can download an app on your phone as well um so that's more of a language based community what i recommend doing is um these are the ones i definitely recommend grammarly get this there's a free version the free version is fantastic anki get this as well learn sentences over time hello talk consider getting this if you want to get speaking and writing practice udemy think about getting this if you want to get paid courses but maybe wait for my courses bbc learning english i think this is worth getting if you like the news italki do this if you want private lessons and link you take a look around the community and think if it's going to be good for you okay so i'm just going to come back to the live chat again to see what people are saying about the chat um so we've got people saying i'm using anki i usually use grammarly hellotalk is great software i used hellotalk a lot it's a great app hello talk is a so people love hellotalk so i think it's great to do um yeah and i definitely recommend grammarly for everyone here as well okay any questions at this stage um though some of the apps are free most of them are free but there might be some paid additions to them like for example udemy you have to pay to get a course um but i definitely recommend getting the free version of grammarly grammarly is fantastic it's one of my favorite apps okay let's now move on to i've got another another thing to share i've thought what what i do here is well is highlight other english teachers who are creating lessons online and one of them is someone called sean banville and he has created so many resources for english teachers and english learners and what i thought we'd do is just to move this over a little bit so you can read it perfect and this is um a lesson about sumo wrestling and what we can do is i'll read this to you and then i'll leave the link in the description so then you can take all these different activities down below this is a way for you to just learn new words and phrases test your knowledge to learn better phrases here there's so much you can do when it comes to this a lot of it is all well it's all based on this article here in fact i'll just leave the website in the live chat there you go someone says i've been using anki for 10 years it's great wow 10 years and you're using perfect grammar i've been using anki for 10 years it's great okay so this article is uh about sumo wrestling and diets so sumo wrestler if you don't know i'll just do it in here sumo wrestler and we'll look at some pictures just in case you don't know and then you can understand sumo wrestlers so these are sumo wrestlers it's this sport in japan which i think the whole world knows about but a lot of people don't really understand it or it's not it's not a sport that's spread around the world it seems to be very specific to japan but i just love this first sentence the world's heaviest ever sumo wrestler has given health advice to other wrestlers the restless fighting name was aurora he is from russia and his real name is anatoly oh sorry he weighed 292 kilograms before he retired in 2018. aurora has warned other wrestlers to take better care of themselves after the death of a 28 year old sumo wrestler earlier this year aurora told the asahi newspaper that japan sumo wrestlers should eat less sumo wrestlers are famous for having enormous appetites and for eating a lot aurora said it was time for wrestlers to think more about their diet and reduce their calorie intake he said it's never easy to stay healthy as long as you're living the life of a sumo wrestler aurora told reporters that sumo wrestler's lifestyle can be unhealthy he described how he put on so much weight he ate two huge meals a day he had a daily diet containing over 7000 calories he said he used to eat 200 pieces of sushi and drink a crate of beer in one sitting he also weighed extra bros of rice when other wrestlers offered them to him his diet led to hypertension and fatigue he said i would lie down and nap nap right after eating which wasn't good just walking or moving was really troublesome the japan the japan sumo association has published 10 health guidelines for wrestlers it said they should eat fish and vegetables in addition to meat they should also chew food properly and avoid snacks so what's funny about this is the um heaviest ever sumo wrestler is now giving health advice to people so this seems like it's been done after the fact which means after the time he was a sumo wrestler but it's interesting that he is the one now giving advice and i think this happens a lot in the world like people who have had problems in the past can give advice about those problems once they have overcome them what is really interesting here is this sumo wrestler was eating 200 pieces of sushi and drank a crate of beer in one sitting so in one sitting means at one meal in one sitting during one meal now i'm trying to think about how many pieces of sushi i could eat and i think i could eat over 100 pieces of sushi if i didn't eat for maybe 24 hours and i was ready for it in the chat tell me how many pieces of sushi you think you could eat how many pieces of sushi do you think you can heat eat let me know in the chat okay um someone says i become a sumo wrestler at midnight which probably means that you like to snack at midnight someone says i am impressed i'm impressed as well so a crate of beer as well just to let you know is 24 cans or bottles of beer so 200 pieces of sushi and 24 beers in one sitting now this also this article as well is all about diet and exercise and and just living and healthy life so what they said here at the end was it said they should eat fish and vegetables in addition to meat they should also chew food properly and avoid snacks so that they're now giving advice to say all right eat less eat vegetables eat fish which i think is what they do anyway right they eat a lot of fish and vegetables and they eat a lot of it all in one sitting but let's see i never eat sushi but i eat very little it depends how hungry i am more than 15. i think it depends on the size of the sushi yeah well obviously i'm thinking about those small pieces of sushi the smaller pieces of sushi that's what i'm thinking about here but yeah it's um it's a lot and sumo wrestlers if we go back to if we go back to this the their the whole their body is all about being big because that gives them the strength in order to win this type of wrestling and this type of wrestling is different to other types of wrestling because it's more about pushing somebody away whereas different wrestling is take down you need to be athletic this one is more about how strong you can be all right so if you want to do more on that article then click that link i talked about and then go through the different exercises i'll show you here here so that you can learn the vocabulary from that type of lesson and it's really good practice to do this to learn new vocabulary all right so we've now reached the part of the lesson where it's time for you guys to ask me questions so it is question and answer time and while i'm waiting for those questions to come in i do want to just say go to the description and get my book the five step plan for english fluency it is free to download and it's going to show you how you can use sentences in order to learn english over the long term and then also check out the article about the apps that i talked about and then let me know what you think about these apps are they going to be useful for you there's my course the to fluency program also to check out and a little drumroll there is the ability now to join as a member on the youtube to fluency channel and this is something i'm going to build up or expand on over the next few weeks especially where i'm going to offer more perks for people who join more things for people who join joining right now is a way to say you want to say thank you to the channel and to just keep the lessons free on here so um there is a join button hopefully underneath the video if you're on a computer there is one there and then let me know when you join you're going to get a little member badge so i can see that in the live chat all right so someone say sushi is very expensive in argentina yeah i bet it's more expensive than steak in argentina is there any difference between have to and and have got to in british english not really we just say um you know i've got to do it i've got to do it i have to do it it's the same it's the same you just won't hear much about i have got to when it comes to american english so that is a difference there british english like to throw different things in um dear jack your new office is amazing so fancy it's actually it's the same office but over here was where i used to have the the uh the wood panels but then back a bit but then they started to fall apart so i decided to create a clean background and just to make it look a little bit better i got this here but the lamp is too bright i've got my little moon i've got my uh real plants and then that light behind me which just adds a bit of color to it um i need to practice pronunciation yes um consider joining the to fluency program i'll put a link in it here because that goes through all the sounds of english and also intonation stress the schwa sound relaxed pronunciation lots of different things so that's a really useful part of it but just in general just general advice is to learn the sounds and practice how to make them so learn the sounds and how to make them somebody recommended the in-betweeners to learn english what do you think about that series never seen it i've never seen it it's a really popular series but when when i went traveling and when i lived in spain and then moved to america i didn't get to see or i lost touch with british tv shows and music so the in-betweeners was one of those shows that i just it never came into my world and now i don't have a lot of time to watch shows what's the difference between i will need and i will be needing um let's see so i'll be needing a lot of help i'll need a lot of help not a big difference i can't think of a big difference there i will be needing a lot of help tomorrow i'll need a lot of help tomorrow i think it just focuses on the verb a little bit more okay i'm reading a book from diana evans ordinary people i'm struggling with them but i won't give up sometimes it's okay in fact it's good to give up a book if it's too difficult i recommend getting books that are more specific to your level i've done this in spanish where i started reading books that were just they used the type of language that people don't generally use and it was difficult for that you know it was difficult for me to understand and it makes you frustrated whereas reading should be enjoyable should be enjoyable so i think it's important to enjoy what you're reading and part of that is not getting something that's too complicated that makes a big difference all right back to the chat what do you do in your time or maybe my spare time um at the moment i'm going to the pool a lot so we we joined a new pool this year we're going to the pool a lot and i just love being at the pool i think it's going to rain this afternoon so um we won't be going then but yeah apart from that spend a lot of time with kids um with the kids play soccer football a lot read history and then tidy the house that's what i tend to do a lot tidy the house lolly says living in the us have you lost your english accent a little bit yeah a little i think um i find it happens sometimes i it's weird because i have i have to modify my voice a lot for english teaching and also for living in america because if i just talk like i talk back home people just don't understand me as well and so i do modify the voice i don't have a whatsapp group um that's might be something that i could do for to fluency members but no i don't have a whatsapp group at the moment what do you like reading i like reading history it's the only thing i read history um history in geopolitics uh do you speak french french come on come on a little bit not really how long have you been streaming 50 minutes five zero what's the plural of fish um seven fish seven fishes both are fine um definitely both thought both are fine in that regard people use both um yeah it's uh it's funny because people say oh it's only fish but people definitely use both definitely do you know german no i don't know i don't know hardly any german i studied german in school for a year or two years um but i can't remember anything about it great accent in french i'm going to do a lesson on accents because or learning how to pronounce languages because i think it's an important thing to do if you want to learn the language and i'm going to talk about i'm going to talk about a teacher who helped me with french where um i could rap in french kind of uh uh stromae that was more spanish so
