hello friends welcome to gardening with creekside i am jenny and here we are for our weekly nursery tour at creekside nursery in dallas north carolina zone 7b it is the last weekend of may it is so hard to believe that next week is going to be june it's crazy don't know about y'all but time has just been flying around here it's a beautiful morning here at the nursery we have had some really high temperatures the last week we've been up in the 90s with humidity going crazy but last night we had a storm come through cooler temperatures are here we are so excited to have cooler temperatures we thought we would of course go through the nursery and show you what is growing blooming and thriving both in the gardens and for sale that you can take home with you to incorporate into your space if you remember here we are at the edge of the pines right where we planted these hydrangeas that are trial plants for us some are new some are old but they are starting to come into their own hydrangea season is just oh so close to being in full bloom so i wanted to give you an update to show you how everything is doing of course in the back we have the little quick fire it's going to be a little bit delayed this year i think it's not quite showing there's a couple little buds on it but my one at the house that gets a little bit more sun has been established for a little bit longer has full blooms this guy's just a little bit behind here we have giddy wee bit giddy and a wee bit grumpy from proven winners these are going to be nice petite small hydrangeas they are ph dependent so that means based on your soil's level of ph ph level of your soil will determine your color right now both of these are showing pink in fact all of the ones that are ph dependent are showing pink i think that will probably change as they get more acclimated to our natural soil and probably turn into that blue purple range so that'll just be something fun to kind of keep in mind as we go through these in the coming years so jerry is showing you giddy right now just a really pretty pink you can see that the center is a nice still retaining that white color and then over here with grumpy we've got one that's more in bloom and it's a bit of a more intense pink with a solid color all the way through you can tell i've got a couple of little burned leaves here why is that it's because like i told you we were hitting 90 degrees we have not had rain this was the first rain we've had last night in weeks so grumpy got a little dried out and that's showing is fine now it'll be good now this is from southern living this is heartthrob you can see how it's just a really intense green foliage and again this is probably going to be in that red range i believe heartthrob is color specific so it's going to it's not going to be ph dependent color specific means it's going to be that red color no matter what your soil level is this is the let's dance big band from proven winners i love the whole let's dance series it is just great petite hydrangeas again these are going to do some filtered sun morning sun not these are not going to be for us in our zone 7b full out all day sun like your panicle hydrangeas then we have the tough stuff and the tough stuff aha the difference between the two is tough stuff aha is going to be a little bit more fluorithilus so it's going to have some more flowers on it and more of a repeat bloomer than the original tough stuff these are lace caps lace caps completely different look than your mop heads mop head is just that traditional what you think of of the hydrangea nice big full balls of blooms lace caps are different in that you've got beautiful big huge blooms on the outside and then in the center you would have little smaller florets in that so those are those guys this is not a trial plant but this is just a new one for us as far as planting it this is an oak leaf hydrangea this is alice remember we've gone in those tours of mama's garden where she had that massive oak leaf hydrangea that's been there for years well that's what i'm hoping alice will do and be that way in years from now so she is blooming she's got lots of beautiful new growth on her gonna do fantastic moving on um we're gonna um tiptoe through here and this is a fun hydrangeas time out hydrangeas coming into bloom this is one that i bought years ago from another local nursery and i got it because its name is um emily and as you know our oldest daughter's name is emily so this is a beautiful this is a color specific it is a white one um and she is doing great here i had her at the house a couple of years ago and she just did not like that spot here she's doing much better so she is just a pretty girl we're gonna tiptoe around this way um but the hydrangeas i mean gosh they're just they're coming in and they're so pretty this is twist and shout look at this this is another lace cap this has is more again ph specific but look at those nice big petals on the outside just now beginning to open up so when you if you have hydrangeas and you have your space for hydrangeas whether it's sun or shade there's a hydrangea for every situation in your garden so of course here at the nursery we're happy to help you pick out the right one but yeah oh you just can't beat hydrangeas of course we still have lots of hostas all sorts of fun things we've not talked about these guys back here and i wanted to show you these are camille camilla camellia it's gonna say camilla that's not camilla camellias this is white by the gate so white by the gate is gonna be a beautiful japonica um camellia japonicos remember have the big huge fat leaves they're going to bloom beginning roughly january through the early spring white by the gate is that massive gorgeous double pure white bloom absolutely exquisite here we have them in a trellis form so that means you can put them if you want to create like a privacy screen you can see how we've kind of lined them all up here to kind of create a little bit of a wall a room right here so you can put them up against the wall and let them trellis up of course there's a little bit of maintenance that you have to do as they grow you know you keep them tied flat keep them pruned flat to the wall so you can use that we've had customers use them to help build in a screen like to hide their air conditioning units so that is a great option white by the gate does really well as far as your sun conditions you're going to need that filtered sun it's not going to be one that can handle the full full full hot sun here of course you remember at the nursery it's going gonna be pretty much shade and then it gets that late afternoon sun because the sun sets over here so it gets it that way and they're doing great so if you're looking for something unique a focal point you have a wall you have an area that just needs something fun and different you might want to consider the white by the gate in the trellis form they will do wonderful speaking of hydrangeas again here we have some penny max penny max or again look at this look at that massive bloom on this this is again we call the mop head these are going to be color specific so you can see here in the pots this has a little bit of a blue tint to it then we have one next door that's in the purple range then if we were to travel on down then there's some in the pink that's really because they are here in the pots again once you get them in the ground at your garden it might take a year or two for them to acclimate and get that ph level just right as far as your colors go so those are beautiful now talking about my shade people a lot of times people think if you have shade you can't have annual color that's not true in fact a lot of folks like i just had a customer yesterday and so she wanted a shade loving perennial that bloomed non-stop in the summer and i'm sure there's a plant out there that maybe will do that i don't have one here so i was thinking i was like well if you're going to do that then you're really going to look for annuals so annuals will give you those little pops of continuous color throughout the season and that's what i love doing in my garden is creating that trio or really i guess there's four of them you have trees then you have shrubs like your hydrangeas you can have perennials your hostas your ferns and then you have your annuals and they all create and do something different and are in their full glory at different times of the year so you're using a mix of all your flowers to give you that beautiful layered colored look throughout the four seasons of the year so of course here we have the double up begonias these are new from proven winners the red the white the pink great thing about these is they can do sun or shade so you know if you're like well i'm not really sure how much sun i get well then these are great because they can do anything same thing with your surefire begonias this is the rose then this is the red they can do sun or shade the difference between the two is that surefires are going to get a lot bigger and more of an airy look to them where your double ups are a nice mounded look tee tiny blooms but there's a ton of them and they just make a great impact now also terrenia terrenia is a great option if you're looking for a trailing plant get some pine needles out of here um for your shade garden so this is the catalina pink it's a beautiful it's almost like a i don't know like a snapdragon kind of look to it um but it's a great trailer fantastic with all those the whites and the pinks together and then this is the large violet so come out a large look at that that huge fat bloom in it very vigorous does great in containers hanging baskets window boxes i love to plant terrenia in the ground underneath my hydrangeas because it acts as a ground cover that is in full bloom all season long and your pollinators go nuts over it because it has those nice big fat open blooms and so they can really get in there especially the bumblebees with their little fat bodies they can wiggle down in there and do really well come over here for a second because i'm going to show you this again shade people great option here as far as annuals with your color this is a really fun plant this is hippo hippo red now this is purely a shade plant it could do a couple of hours of light filtered sun but it really is a shea plant think of it like a coleus it's purely for the foliage but it just has beautiful kind of that red and green marbled leaf to it really fun i paired it with some pegasus begonia in a container to give people just a look different colors different texture um so when you're planting your garden think of that colors textures and height this will get kind of big 16 to 22 inches so this will be great as a backdrop with something lower in front so the hippo red is great and then of course you can't go wrong with the double up not double up it's a double but it's the rockapucco impatience again sun is a little bit in the morning very filtered but they are predominantly shade plants they will just fry up and just shrivel up if you put them in too much hot sun and they do like consistent water so that is red that jerry is showing you for me it's a little bit more of a mauvey red or a mauve rose kind of color then there's apple blossom which is a light pink there's purple there's wisteria white and then coral reef so lots of different colors but just beautiful double blooms a lot of people at times people will think there's some sort of rose they're not they're fantastic beautiful annuals for color now here we go into the block of this is midnight masquerade it is a penstemon from proven winners it is a perennial and this is the time of year where they are just in their full glory absolutely stunning blooms you can tell it's that kind of that light pink lavender bloom on it nice and high it can get 34 to 40 inches in the garden there's i don't know if you can see it but there's bumblebees all in the blooms right now let me show you i know y'all love your tags so let me show you the tag now i will say that right now you can see we have it in kind of some shady conditions this really is a full sun plant once it um gets in the full sun with that uv rays on it the foliage will turn almost i don't say black but an extreme deep purple burgundy look to it when you don't have those uv rays they're a beautiful green we just it's just because of space here at the nursery this is where we have them and they can get hit by all the irrigation these are going to be um in zones three to eight i have one of these in the cottage garden at the house and oh my goodness it is she is happy happy happy and huge and beautiful so midnight masquerades are fantastic um let's see let's mosey on back this way jerry put it in reverse all right let's come on over here and see what is going on we've got desert plains grasses remember as we move this way to the in the nursery this is going to be full sun because again sunset's over here a lot of hot intense sun desert plains grass is a fantastic perennial grass from proven winters loves the sun this is going to be in that about that three foot range beautiful green foliage nice and full and then of course it does the white plumes towards the end of summer it is going to be hardy in zones five to nine so extremely versatile goes into lots of different landscapes um and it has those i just love those little bottle brush blooms i call them blooms plumes on it so this is a great one to mix in with your your other perennials in the sun it does great um jerry let's just oh oh lavender i about forgot about the lavender oh my goodness time out lavender season here we go from proven winners the clean off the tag for you sweet romance lavender oh my goodness 12 to 18 inches tall that will include the blooms beautiful gray blue green foliage on it with those classic lavender blooms that smell amazing this is a great continuous bloomer just absolutely gorgeous of course the bees love it it is going to be hardy in zones five to nine and with lavender you it needs as much sun as you can give it um it does not like a lot of fuss it doesn't like a ton of water of course you have to keep it um you have to keep it you know well watered you can't just put it out there and never water it um but it is definitely more drought tolerant say than like a the impatience that we were just talking about so those are great the um we're on a perennial kick over here y'all the phlox these are some of the the part of the new luminary series i guess it's new i don't know anyway these are new this year this is ultraviolet ultraviolet is a fantastic i mean it is exactly what the name says this intense purple color i love the luminary series because they really are more powdery mildew resistant like look at that foliage it's absolutely gorgeous here in the south with our heat and humidity we really battle the powdery mildew these are beautiful plants the foliage on these guys are gorgeous they smell absolutely amazing there is also the opal essence it's not here right now in this spot but it's a beautiful light um kind of a baby doll pink and they smell amazing absolutely glorious then of course we've got the cat's pajamas tons of cats pajamas lots of the denim and lace russian sage this is another all of these are going to be great for your sun gardens perennial this will be nice and tall has a completely different look than your other perennials that we've just talked about so this is a great way to incorporate it and it smells absolutely amazing because of course it's part of all all these are in these guys the lavender the cat's pajamas and the russian sage the denim and lace are all in those herbaceous kind of that mint family and they smell great here is what i was telling you about where i've put the pegasus and the hippo together just just because it's foliage doesn't mean it can't be beautiful so just in a container right here three hippos two pegasus they will get full and tall and be absolutely glorious as we go through the season everything is doing great the little redheads are still being jerry says keep going the reason he says keep going is because they're not available but um we can't even get the root stock until next year so 2022 but there are great just the little redheads are wonderful um now some fun things that i have done um off camera last week i did this this is um of course the wheelbarrow the infamous wheelbarrow remember last year we had the blue salvia and the snow drift and the dichondra falls all of that i like to always switch it up a little bit so these beautiful cannas these are canna lilies this is cleopatra and cleopatra is you can tell is just this gorgeous foliage even if it never blooms the foliage on it alone is gorgeous these are trial plants that our friends at classic caladiums sent us so i don't have them for sale i had a lady yesterday from hilton head and said can't you please sell me one no i can't the folks at classic caladiums have given them to us for us to trial this year depending on how they do we could have these available for sale at the nursery next year cleopatra though is going to have these gorgeous intense yellow with maybe some red in the blooms i've got three of them here they were planted i think just last week and we have got tons of new growth on them and then i put the high noon yuriops in front of it because it'll be yellow so all of that will play in well together somebody has asked me if i have holes drainage holes in the wheelbarrow officially no i do not because let me tell you why because i always preach about putting holes in your containers one it is an old rusty wheelbarrow so it does leak so it does have some drainage in it also this time of year and going into the summer this is does not get hit by irrigation it's wet right now because it rained so during the week when we're not open and somebody's not here constantly watering it so it almost acts like a little bit of a self-watering container because we can water it really well once a week the bottom stays moist and so it really doesn't dry out super fast especially with the cannas that works really well because of course they don't like to be dried out at all all right moving on over here again some pots that christine and i threw together for fun we've got the rose pentas with cascade white you know just and this was hey what plants do we have what colors do we want to throw in here and just you know that's the great thing about annuals you can just have fun and throw things together um now what is coming into its own right now is calladiums caladiums y'all if you're especially if you're in the south and you're not having caladiums in your garden i don't know why not if these are the lowest maintenance highest performing plants that you can use in a thousand different ways in your garden i mean they are just gorgeous look at this color so this one is scarlet flame they can do sun or shade extremely versatile so all the caladiums that we have here at the nursery are sun or shade i have them in hanging baskets on the patio i haven't showed them to you yet but i have created two hanging baskets with only caladiums in them i did the white wonder and white wonder i'll show you is right over here so this is white wonder white wonder is predominantly white but it has pink veining in it so the two baskets by the patio on the back porch only have white wonder in them they are going to fill in and they already have started nice and thick and gorgeous i have these remember in the water trough by the barn i'll show you some in a minute you can put them in the landscape containers i mean window boxes i'm going to use them in window boxes in the shade garden they are just absolutely gorgeous and look at that massive leaf now that one looks a little disproportionate right now for some maybe that one leaf got a little extra fertilizer i don't know but but look at this i mean this so this particular variety that jerry just showed you this is fast flash so that's another huge leaves just gorgeous so get your honey buckets out here to the nursery and get some caladiums they're beautiful i mean just absolutely exquisite let's see what else are we going to talk about right quick of course we still have tons of super bells and petunias and euphorbia the whole diamond series we've got those we have still got coffee cups so coffee cups is still available we were actually able to get a second round of them so we still have coffee cups available coffee cups remember have those great upturn leaves they will hold the water when it rains and then once it gets full they'll tilt and the water will drip out of them so we've got those and we have sunflowers these are the sun credible sunflowers there's one blooming let me show you where it is here we go now these are little petite blooms on this one because it's still a baby plant now the blooms don't get massively huge on them but they are a continuous bloomer if i recommend for people if you can put it in the ground do that because they will get in the ground to be like a four by four really large do a great job nice and thick and full just magnificent you can put them in a large pot but they do great we have a customer coming is it nine o'clock it's nine o'clock nine o'clock is when we open um so that means we've got to wrap it up i do want to say two aqua pots are filling in quite nicely the man davila's are doing wonderful they are just beautiful climbers i was telling jerry i had an idea i want to put maybe some two in some pots at the base of the pergola and let them go up the um two of the poles we'll see you never know um as always i think you want to wrap it up yeah cheers yeah let's wrap it up all right so we're going to wrap it up um but yeah so it's a gorgeous day here at the nursery come see us um of course we'll be open thursdays fridays and saturdays you know for the foreseeable future so if you're coming into town and you want to come see us we would love to have you here we still have a great supply on just about everything that you can imagine um and we're here
