well here we are at the end of this school year it's been a long and difficult year for all of us in a way as i was thinking about the end of the school year i was reminded of a time when i was a little girl and my mum and dad wanted to take me for a long walk up a steep hill and there were bits of the long walk that i really loved the slope was gentle the grass was green the sun was shining i had a really great time but there were other bits that were really really difficult sometimes the slope was very steep sometimes it was really hard to keep going because the ground was very slippy sometimes i was so tired i just wanted to sit down and never move ever again and then there was the time when i thought we were nearly at the top of the hill and i looked up and there were still more ridges to go until we got to the top i thought i would never ever get there but of course at last i did and when i got to the top of the hill i turned and i looked back and i saw how far i'd come and it was really exciting to see not only the easy bits that i've that i had enjoyed but the difficult bits too and to say i did that look i managed that look that was really difficult but i did it and nevertheless it feels to me that it's really important at the end of this particularly difficult school year for us all to stop and look back and say look how far we've come look that bit was really difficult that bit we quite enjoyed granted there weren't very many of those this year look at that bit i really struggled with that was the moment i thought i had no energy and never wanted to move again but look how far we've come it's been a difficult year but we've got through it and we have gone a long long way and we've gone a long long way together in a moment mr daggett is going to teach us the hymn oh jesus i have promised and it's a really lovely hymn because in it we reflect on how we promise to follow jesus in our lives but how we discover that when we promise to follow jesus in our lives we discover that jesus is with us through it all so as we stop and reflect at the end of this school year and we think about how far we've come the difficult things that we've managed to do all the way through the year let us remember that jesus has been with us through it all and will carry on being with us as we go onwards into the school holidays and for those of us who are coming back coming back next year for the next academic year so as we end our singing assemblies for this school year i'd like to pray a prayer for us all as we go onwards into the summer holidays the prayer goes like this may we go in peace may we go in love from the father above jesus christ the son stay with us till the day is done holy spirit encircle us in all we think and do once again god's blessing be with us amen today's hymn oh jesus i have promised is sung to the tune wolvercut written by william ferguson and named after a village in oxfordshire i can't wait to share this positive thrilling and uplifting tune which was written for young voices for school so it's great we're learning this together but before we do that we're going to warm up our voices so sitting up where we are that's it and smiling because i promise that helps with our singing raise your shoulders all the way up to your ears and have a quick squeeze and then relax that's right then take your hands and put them in front of you into a diamond shape turn that upside down and put your hands on your tummy so we can feel our singing muscles and we're going to warm up our voices repeat after me shhh well done the tune starts with this leap of fourths stacked one on top of the other sounds like we're striding upwards into space now we're gonna give this numbers we're in a major one two three four five six seven eight let's sing that together one two three four five six seven eight and the first note is note number five the second one is note number one and the third note is note number four so if i stack those one on top of the other we get this five one four could you sing that please and go five one four well done after note number four we come down one step so we're going to give that a note number three let's add that into the mix five one four three your turn sing five one four three that little gesture that positive upward uplifting gesture comes back three times in this tune and the other thing that happens halfway through is that we change key so we've been in a major quite happily and we go to the third the flattened third of the scale the mediant which is to c so from a key with three sharps to a key with no sharps or flats in it just naturals is quite a big shift and it sounds really dramatic [Music] have a listen here's the point and also at that point we get a really easy singable sixth let's try to sing that together one two three [Music] well done our challenge now is to follow the tune and sing it to la as i play and sing please join in with me just sing what you hear and use your eyes to notice any patterns especially the figure and the use of the sixth and the key change halfway through let's sit up smile and sing together after three to la and one two three [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] well done for getting that far we're going to add some words before we sing with our vicar's coral oh jesus i have promised to serve thee to the end after three the first line and then we'll put the whole thing together and one two [Music] there's a little taste of what's to come our vicars coral are ready to lead us in our act of worship from the cathedral and to mark the end of the year let's have fun don't forget to smile and enjoy [Music] jesus [Music] is [Music] oh my god [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] my [Music] is [Music] my friends [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] let us pray almighty god who has called us together we give you thanks for the life of our schools and for the communities to which we belong we thank you for the good things we have enjoyed this term and recall all the wonderful things we have learned together lord hear us lord graciously hear us almighty god we recall the challenges we have faced over the last year and remember with love those who have supported us through the ups and downs of this academic year we pray for a fresh hope for the future and that our break might be refreshing watch over our families and friends and the community of our schools and bring us safely to the term ahead lord hear us lord graciously hear us almighty god the giver of all grace in silence we now pray for ourselves for the things which are on our hearts offering to you our needs and our concerns and praying for your help and guidance in all things lord hear us lord graciously hear us reunite these our prayers with those of the saints in heaven who pray for us all the time as we say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the fellowship of the holy spirit be with us all evermore amen
