this is jim again from the pain pt we're going to do part two here of emotional tracking emotional awareness practice and this is the heart of getting to the bottom of your chronic pain or chronic illness is to get in touch with the emotional side of it feeling your emotions so find a place that's comfortable either sitting lying down make sure that you're alert you're not going to fall asleep you can keep your eyes closed or open and if you get tired just open your eyes and let's start by just going into your body and i want you to this time move into a general body awareness notice what you're feeling right now in your body do you have symptoms do you have pain anywhere do you have discomfort anywhere tension tightness i want you to notice that in your body right now wherever that might be and bring your awareness to it and let's see how that makes you feel emotionally to feel your pain or your symptoms or your tension or your tightness and i want you to bring your awareness into your chest area into your energetic heart the heart is the purifier and also the center of emotions in the body so in your chest area generally speaking and i want you to ask yourself this question how does this pain or these symptoms or this tension or tightness in my body make me feel emotionally and just see what you feel on your chest maybe your throat your face what's there what do you notice as a result of tuning in to your physical symptoms or pains how does it make you feel emotionally see if you can feel what's in your chest area stay open stay calm stay relaxed what sensations do you notice there what feelings do you notice in your chest maybe your throat your face can you get in touch with this just open to it whatever it is and the next question is what is this what emotion am i feeling right now in response to my physical pain my physical symptoms my tensions my tightness in the body what emotion is this that i'm feeling is it sadness is it fear or anxiety is it anger let's see if you can notice what you're feeling you want to be able to actually feel the emotional feelings in your body and be able to label it what it is that you're feeling this means that you're truly in touch with your emotions if you're having a hard time feeling an emotion there's potentially some repression or suppression happening and if you're in touch with your physical symptoms or your pains right now and you've had them for a long time there will be some emotion there so what is it what are you feeling in your chest what are you feeling maybe in your throat your face what are these sensations what do they feel like what's the quality of them the flavor the texture is it a flavor of sadness is it a flavor of fear flavor of anger is it mixed is it mixed flavors maybe some sadness with anger maybe some fear with something else we can have mixed feelings very common the sole purposes of this is to get you to feel your emotions instead of feeling the physical pain or the physical symptoms if your mind gets drawn back to the physical symptoms or you notice the physical symptoms increasing in intensity as a distraction to bring you back to them go back to your chest go back to your heart throat face what do you feel emotionally this will be interesting for you because what can happen is sometimes the brain will divert this the emotional feelings back to physical symptoms as you're doing this practice and that really shows you how this works what you're learning to do right now is to start to feel your emotions instead of feeling the physical symptoms so again go back to your symptoms your pain notice it for a moment then go to your heart your chest area your throat your face what do i feel emotionally how does this make me feel to have these symptoms how does it make me feel to have these pains these tensions these tightness of my body i've had these symptoms for a long time i've tried many things to get better how does this make me feel emotionally now that i'm sitting here with my pain and my symptoms still do i feel sad do i feel scared do i feel mad or any flavor of those can you feel the actual physical sensation of the emotion and do you know what it is this is the practice to first get to this level of identifying the feeling physically and labeling the emotion in your mind silently and then you're just going to hold the space for this emotion you're going to feel it through without reacting to it or resisting it staying open to it just noticing it and what it does is you feel it so what's there what emotions are you feeling now in yourself don't judge them don't try to change them or stop them just be open to this experience of what you feel and try to stay with it again if you get distracted or diverted from the emotion to your thinking in your mind come back to your chest your belt sorry your chest and your heart if you get distracted or pulled away by physical symptoms come again back to your chest and heart area throat and face where the emotions reside and stay there and just feel how are you feeling emotionally right now how does your pain your physical symptoms make you feel emotionally whatever you feel you feel there's no questions asked there's no wondering or trying to do anything about it you're just being open to this experience and learning to feel emotions and just label them for what they are and then notice what happens when you feel them what are you feeling right now emotionally it can change it can shift remember the different three core motions have different flavors of feelings fears more jittery shaky nervous energy feeling sadness is more of a heavy watery sort of weighty feeling anger is more of a hot sort of burning sort of intense feeling what are you feeling right now all i'd like you to do on a daily basis is to learn to go to your chest to your heart area throat face instead of going to your physical symptoms go there for a moment but come back to this center part of your body where you feel your emotions and start feeling them see if you can stay there as long as you need to and throughout your day ask yourself how am i feeling emotionally right now we need to retrain our systems how to do this most of us have not learned how to feel our emotions and if we do feel them for a moment we typically move away from them so i want you to stay with your emotions until they naturally recede good job everybody really good job come back to this video practice this and then practice it throughout your day to get more in touch with your emotions and just notice what happens to your physical symptoms as you do become more connected to your emotions and feel them through you be the judge to see what happens take care everybody we'll talk to you soon
