is alien worth playing a really simple question that you might be asking yourself whether you already know of this game and the odd history from the initial announcement to finally releasing in the western market or you just happened upon the game on steam i won't leave you in suspense he's alien worth playing the answer is maybe it depends sort of with that definitive and substantial statement out of the way let's explore why you might want to play this game why you might not want to who could enjoy this title who will absolutely hate it the potential pitfalls and just generally how i'm seeing the game after having played it off and on throughout the different phases of development from 2019 until now when it is just released i apologize about the video footage but it's mostly all trailers and footage ripped from my twitch stream so the quality isn't the best but come check me out on twitch link in the video description leave a like on this video comment if you do enjoy it and let's get into it what even is the game an mmrpg developed by bluehole the same studio that made terror which in my opinion was a fantastic game that just didn't get supported in the way most of us would have liked they executed certain aspects amazingly such as the combat and general feel of the game but it was let down massively in content rollout plans and monetization alien started out as a totally different game in feeling and execution called ascent infinite realm which wasn't received well at all during the initial testing and so the team actually made the effort to take this back to the drawing board and come back with what we see today this is still developed in unreal engine 3 which is usually a big red flag for performance and stuttering issues in mmrpgs historically but surprisingly without those hang-ups they don't exist in this game alien is often compared to black desks online as a game but in my experience it feels very different and focuses on a slightly more western approach to mmrpg design they employ a light holy trinity system of tank healer dps and they have actual pve content inside the game with instanced five player dungeons that can be quite difficult fun and interesting while still having the basic korean mmorpg structure of open world pvp grinding monsters for hours on end and of course everyone's favorite you know it you love it rng gear progression ah yes that is of course sarcasm unfortunately not about that existing is in the game it isn't a favorite but at least in this game it isn't quite as convoluted as black desert online with their fail stack system not yet anyway ellen was initially announced to be bi to play in the west and instead move to a free-to-play model to try and appeal to as wide of an audience as possible giving anyone who purchased packages for the game a three-day head start so if you are considering playing be aware this game is open world pvp enabled at all times and people will roll up to eat your ass like a sacked lunch fortunately you don't lose anything when you die and traveling the game is extremely fast which means you'll be inconvenienced in only very minor ways by this mechanic though of course if you have made it to this point of the video without being turned off for the idea of playing alien this is likely to be the first major issue for a lot of players always on open world pvp which works based on faction versus faction is not everyone's cup of tea if you are a pvp player or a pve player who can put up with dying to people without consent then hopefully you will be able to enjoy the game let me take you to the very start you pick your server you pick your faction which can be reduced down to red people equals cool horde type faction and blue people equals way less populated alliance faction you then choose your class between the seven currently available warlord which is the only tank currently available your typical shield using tanki boy mystic which is the only currently available healer and then for dps you have the two-handed sword user called the slayer the cowboy themed gunner your resident magical mage called elementalist and what mmrpg would be complete without the rogue class which in alien is called the assassin there are four races to choose from human elves orcs and ein the only one requiring explanation there is ein which are basically tiny teddy bear furries races make no difference in this game besides cosmetically and of course with the additional component of morality if you do decide to play a furry so what sets elian apart from other similar games and why exactly would you want to play this over the other possible options out there well for one it's new and there's nothing quite like that new mmrpg smell to engross you in the content for at minimum a couple weeks before the crushing reality of the current game state comes crashing down around you and you go back to complaining about there being nothing to play and how dead the mmrpg genre is it also has a very smooth fluid and enjoyable combat system this goes hand in hand with how you build out your character and progress through the game and it adds a lot of depth to what otherwise would have already been a decent system essentially you have a fixed amount of abilities that you can have equipped at any one time starting out it's one through four q e r left click and right click then you have an ultimate that you can unlock that default goes on t so that's ten abilities you have access to while you're playing and then you can obviously customize this and as you level up in the game you unlock more abilities and you can basically create set templates and swap between them whenever you want in addition to this and the biggest factor each ability has up to four different unlocks which you can assign to that ability these cost points and you can only have a certain amount of points depending on how good your gear is these unlocks can change how each ability works in drastic ways as you progress through the game you assign gems to your gear which have different names and colors these have their own talent tree in addition to this which lets you pick from three abilities per tier and they also contribute points towards your skill builds so for example my character i've been playing for about eight hours now and i have a bunch of red gems a bunch of yellow gems and their levels add up to me having about 80 something skill points so i can choose how to assign those points into an overall build augmenting the spells that i have equipped maybe i want a super expensive 30 plus ability upgrade or maybe a bunch of lower point ones to have an overall more balanced skill set also due to the colors of the gems i have i'm specializing my talent tree in addition to this you're probably gonna find this a little bit complicated basically collect gems pick which talent tree you want to go into and then make the gems as high level as possible equip them all and then customize your gear customize your talent tree and customize your skill loadout with the augments then you add in the fact you can progress your gear by upgrading it with as i said the rng progression system and the game has multiple currencies that it will bombard you with but in general when you add in the diverse character builds almost everyone you fight does something different and you can truly customize your playstyle to what you enjoy using maybe it won't be meta maybe it won't work very well but it's your build and there will be a better build out there most likely but at least for now it's really fun to just come up with something yourself and go test it out see how different it plays from what you're currently using and just keep swapping it up it's it's really fresh it's really fun in a game where most the time you play involves combat whatever that is doing dungeons instance pvp open world pvp or grinding mobs this makes me enjoy alien a lot more than i otherwise would based on the rest of the game which is mostly unremarkable compared to what's already out there and available in the genre now the burning question whenever you discuss an mmrpg in 2021 is of course what about that cash up how pay to win is the game i honestly don't have a definitive answer for you here so i'll just outline what is in the cash shop and you can decide if this is something you can stomach or not there is your typical pay not to be in convenience garbage such as inventory slots bank slots character slots an item you rent for 30 days that calls in a vendor to sell items to or buy potions from pets that auto loot for you and work almost identically to black dessert online pets though nowhere near as required and another pet system called luminous that you can purchase to smash together an upgrade which directly affects character power plus your typical optional subscription that you'll most likely want to have or feel punished the impact these luminous has on the game is likely the biggest factor for a fair play environment between a player and someone who doesn't how much they actually help if you do drop your wallet out on these or her if you don't i can't comment on since i've yet to experience it but you can get these in the game apparently and people say it's not as bad i can't tell you if that's copium or not because i haven't gotten to that point of the game but just making you aware this is in here now all of this to me culminates in an experience that already on launch is not monetized in the way i would prefer but i do still enjoy the game in the short term in spite of this and if this remains as it is now it isn't the worst cash up in a free to play game i've ever seen they removed quite a lot of the issues such as selling cash up currency for gold to other players and removed a lot of the rng involved with the luminous system and again you do earn these in game they're not that hard to get apparently so you may see it as a paid to progress faster if that's how you want to define this personally for me still a problem but isn't ruining the enjoyment of the game for me in terms of technical aspects the game runs pretty well though that shouldn't be a surprise since the game isn't graphically too impressive it looks like a 10 year old mmo in terms of textures but the environments can be fairly nice in places and it runs really well on my system when streaming even when there's dozens of players fighting on screen which is a frequent occurrence with the open world pvp in terms of actual gameplay the loop is fairly standard for korean mmos with a few cool additions typically in mmos you have to spend dozens and dozens of hours leveling through content you likely don't care too much about before you get to the point of the game where it's fun and there's the selling points of what the game is the typical you've got to play for 100 hours to figure out if you like it or not is not prevalent in this game alien does away with this concept completely within the first hour or two hours if you're a little bit slow you basically have an over level 30 character and you're thrust into the open world pvp conflict zones they give you the basics they run you through a tutorial via some quests that isn't too obtrusive and then you're really out there in these streets you will quickly land in a conflict zone where you meet the opposing faction have a bunch of abilities and get to find out really quickly whether or not this is a game that you're interested in playing the game operates on a soft cap system essentially leveling to 40 is where you get access to most the power in the game content and this can take a couple days of semi hardcore play just grinding mobs while doing daily quests and after that the power you gain is mostly related to gear and build and upgrades there is no max level it just gets harder to level each level and you get that as a byproduct while farming stuff as opposed to a goal of getting to say level 16 world of warcraft and that being the end game with that being the case i do recommend trying out alien since it has one of the most relaxed barriers for entry that you can get in an mmrpg it's free to play it rushes you to actual content so you can find out if it's something you want to continue with and then the softcap grind isn't too bad compared to similarly structured games and products on the market already so having said that what are some of the worst things about the game the first one being at times it really does feel like a mobile game on pc there are a lot of systems that just make you shake your head as a pc mm-rpg player auto-passing is present but that's the least of the issues you have a million currencies and items thrown at you constantly which you'll have no idea what they do the interface is just nightmare fuel with 500 buttons you can't make sense of as a new player and the game pats you on the head like the good boy you are for just existing congratulations you was logged in for five minutes here's a gold star gupping it on the wall congratulations you leveled up in the game that's about leveling up here have a tree that sort of stuff you get them for pretty much everything you also have afk battling in the game for some hours a day you can leave your computer on and it will give you experience they have a playlist of things as well that you can do in the game that are only active for certain periods of time each day which forces all the players online to go and do this specific thing and this is a mechanic that mobile games use to put you in the line of fire for players that are ahead of you in progression to try and entice you into paying money it's basically let's make them painfully aware that they are inadequate compared to these other people though with the current cash shop pavilion you're very much more likely to be killed by players that are better than you they've just played the game more they're more progressed than you as opposed to how much money they've spent and that is of course a time-honored mmrpg tradition if people play more they typically you know are better at the game and have more stuff than you and i say the current cash shop because we all know historically free to play games and korean games in general do get worse in terms of what they sell over time now who is this game for people who are just bored and want a short-term dopamine hit with a game that has a really cool diverse combat system that feels fun to tinker with it's just a joy to grind mobs in this game it is just fun those that like or can handle open world pvp and most importantly those who don't mind that the game is unlikely to be a long-term mainstay in their mmrpg catalogue who is this game not for anyone who has reservations about cash shops that punish you for not spending money or can result in power advantages for money spent anyone who doesn't like korean open world mm-rpg design which is mostly revolving around grinding mobs for hours on end and of course most importantly anyone who doesn't like open world forever on pvp and specifically with unequalized gear meaning that if people have better gear than you they're much better than you resulting in people grabbing a gold-plated dessert spoon and eating your ass for breakfast overall i like alien it's a nice breath of fresh air with super fast responsive combat after having played 200 hours of new world in the last two weeks it is a fun change of pace it's free you might enjoy it it won't waste a ton of your time in the discovery of whether you will or not and i personally like to turn your brain off and grind aspect of the game i think there are games for thinking really hard games for paying close attention all the time that really tacks your brain and then there's games that let you forget about what you're doing and just zone out which is valuable to people such as myself alien allows me to zone out listen to some music ransom mobs but at least keeps me on my toes knowing i will likely have to fight with somebody or multiple somebodies while also allowing me to choose if i want to go do something more difficult or seek out fights for myself is it likely to be a game i play long term probably not actually most likely not but at least short term i'm having fun with it which is all you can really expect and all you can really ask from a free-to-play title that likely won't see a ton of long-term success just due to what it's competing against although i do wish them the best of luck because at least for now it seems that cacao have removed a lot of the problems from the cash shop and hopefully they do support the game going forward for the people who do really enjoy it of which there will be some i appreciate you watching this video if it did help you out or you enjoyed in any way i would appreciate if you took the time to leave a like maybe even go crazy treat yourself today write a comment these things help the video get noticed by algorithm senpai and he rewards me with
