I'm onstage with you - this is amazing who da thought it it's so lovely to see you so tell me about tonight how are you feeling about it I never think about things till I get actually on the stage and I don't know what the questions are gonna be I couldn't know but I don't want to know because I like to be surprised and with him you're always going to be surprised so I'm looking forward to it it's an unusual way to promote a book but I thought it'd be nice because a lot of fans have flown in from all over the world for this and so I like these kind of things like I don't know what's gonna happen which is really good and your pals are you know T so yeah if you've got questions playing oh yes it was incredible is obviously this book is an amazing rate and I loved it so much obviously this is the whole of Elton's life and so you know also been famous for about 50 years and lots of interesting things happen before you were famous so and it covers everything so so we've got to try and do an interview which covers as much as possible but I think you could talk to Elton forever because he's met everybody he's done it all his personal story is incredible as well what I love about this it's like you're talking to me well that's what I mean be and that's the genius of Alexis Petridis who I did all the interviews with on his phone and then he I knew a new he's very funny writer and I've known him for a long time and I wanted someone who had a sense of humor and he captured me brilliantly and I knew he would because I'd say I he sends me emails about his personal life that just cracked me up so he's a very I call him mr. bean because he's so accident-prone and he writes very funnily and I just thought that's the kind of book I want to write I want an anecdotal book that people can page turn very quickly yeah it's I mean yeah I had to read the only one sitting but you know really cuz I really even though you think you know the story you don't know the story well kokin who's known me for fifty two years said I thought I knew you I didn't know you at all Wow he said I thought I knew everything about you and he said I didn't know for him to say that yeah that's extraordinary really good and both of you of course it's boys that you've got do your boys know each other do they play together they spend a lot of time together when they can and my boys loved Alfred and they're away we're taking the boys on tour at the moment that for nine months they've been to America and Canada now they were in Australia and I go there tomorrow night and I'll see them there but they miss their friend they miss Alfred they miss their friends at school it's a nice it's a great thing for them to do of course but you know the younger one Elijah's a little home circles being miss his routine with his friends but they're adapting to it and they sent us a video this morning on they were on they arrived in Australia about quarter to 9:00 in the morning they're on bondi beach by 11 having the greatest time oh baby you know there's that funny thing that went I'm Julia Daubert said her kids said to her ah Stern said are you Julia Roberts because they looked to them she was mummy your dad do you know you died aren't you yeah but do they get dad and it enjoyed is they don't enjoying it different to daddy do you know what I mean no no I'm are you sure you know it's like Britain's Got Talent I know I'm gonna regret it later it's really good you get the golden boy sir that's for sure interesting Michael's my son really likes singing I'm still standing as well and it's this kind of interesting connecting yet you know that's so interesting because so this is a thing about you it's from kids all the way up it's the whole generation and I'm still standing is really I mean it's a great song in you of course it is but it really it really has just people could uphold and I know videos of people on it who take videos of themselves young teenagers doing I'm still standing it's up on YouTube whatever and David my David sends them to me and says look at this and it's getting credible you know I'm there fourteen thirteen year old kids doing their own dance routines to it and that's what you want I mean you want to stay stay relevant and you want to reach every age group and that's I'm just lucky enough to be able to do the Lion King and that helped me enormous oh because every age group is cyclical and along comes another one and they all go to see the liking so they all know about me they may not know about my older music but in our concerts that we've been doing we've done 141 shows so far on the tour and we get a huge cross-section we get three generations grandparents who started there with me their children and their children and I think that's wonderful and because I mean besotted by children now anyway so the younger they are and they dress up as well and it's so cute unbelievable and some of the outfits are fabulous fun time that was what I found about the movie as well you kind of forgotten how ahead you know you're so far ahead of time you were always you've always kind of all been it's very difficult there's nobody else link you don't you think that there's nobody else like Amelia is there no no all the things and also to stay relevant for so long and actually took me I'm still standing that was probably my first experience of elton singing on top of the pops when I was probably 11 or 12 was because I knew nothing about everything that had happened before and talked about the Lion King I think I've seen it about five or six times because you know one nephews been old enough to sit in the next one I love seeing it again again there's and my son was the right age and it it's incredible so it will go on forever oh absolutely I think it was a mutual thing for me this goodbye yellow brick road which I absolutely loved in I remember because I've seen the film I had no idea that you and bayonet were the same age I thought barely talking visually wouldn't because he was I know but barely there is good that film was fantastic like wow it really would have been the most accessible to of my career is going on to november 2021 the film the book the release on donor in france the stamps that came out it's just been one of those incredible years so I'm having the most successful year in my 73rd year so I've got a lot to be grateful for I'm very very lucky and a lot still to do an awful lot still to do I mean like you said the tour is is going on and then will that really be on it that will be it for touring it would be schlepping is not what I want to do anymore I've been as I say slipping since I was 17 in the back of the van and ten years ago when David said you know well it's obviously you're gonna die on stage we're gonna be going around the world just to gag eyes and having a great time but not really with any purpose and then of course everything turned when we had the children and thank god it did because I would not wanted that into my life like that you know I wanted a purpose in my life and I was given a purpose of with these two boys and they've changed everything so I don't want to be away from them I hate being away from thank God for FaceTime but that's still not the same no it's not the same I mean I came to this place the Hammersmith Apollo to see Kate Bush and she hadn't done a show for a long long time she did like three and a half weeks here and it was sensational and if I did something I would do I'd like to do that I'd like to play here right I'd like to play here for like maybe three weeks or whatever I how long I can play for and do a show with different songs in it that I haven't sung that's what I want to do I can't carry on singing some of the songs I'm doing now we've got the public like them but I've done that and I love that show she did because it was like she doesn't do as many shows obviously as I do but it was just a great experience and what a great thing to do and it was a huge success so and I love this place I have history here so I'm it's in the book I'd sled drove to the music roundabout and then came back and the audience was still here so it's a wonder this is this kind of place I'd like to play and do it's 20 minutes 30 minutes from I live well that's perfect that's what I've got in the back of my mind if I'm gonna play again let's do something here not too big really make it special have a produce nice produce so do songs that I haven't done for so long that people don't know so much you have to be something different yes your energy is astonishing it really isn't it don't you think it's absolutely remarkable I mean you just it's incredible and you have had tough times you're doing great now though you doin really really feel good in yourself yeah I'm very I'm very fit yeah just have the best medical results I've ever had there's not much to test anymore that you know there's no as a pacemaker there's no prostate there's no we're gonna do a quick examinations internally just but no I you know I'm I I'm I've got to keep from my boys I want to see them I want to see them be teenagers I want gotta be I want to be there for them and I don't want to miss a beat that's really all seeing the live shows and seeing Elton play because I've seen a few of the farewell tour shows which are incredible and seeing him play for like two and a half three hours and think wow the stamina because I've been on the stage and I know how knackering it is and also that's the only part of it isn't it because it's you know travelling saying a load to everybody all that sort of thing the towering part is the traveling and the schmoozing the part that I love is the playing obviously and that's not tiring at all that's just fabulous but I like to think I keep myself you know I do a radio show every week for Apple and that keeps me in touch with the younger generation and your new artists and I love doing that and I've befriended lots of new artists because of that radio show and I get all my energy from the new Wow I get my energy from the young I know the old I know the great old singers in my brain they're in my computer up there but when I hear something like stands and and I think God he's amazing or Billie Alice who's 16 when she made a record or Lord when she was 16 I think that's incredible when you hear somebody new news Capaldi or someone either who's just starting out it's it's really it moves you hmm and it I always try and make an effort of contacting those kids and having lunch with them and say listen if you ever need any advice I've been around since you know Julius Caesar please give me a ring here's my email because it's difficult sometimes that is so I had lunch with Tom Adal I've had lunch with Sam Smith Sam fender Louis Capaldi go out who else James Blake obviously ed Sheeran died I managed anyway and it's great just say listen it's not easy out there if you need to pick my brain I'm here I don't want anything for it that's amazing that is so that keeps me alive you know the young give you so much Alex of course they do thank you artists always bowing about young people and they're not as good as the ones from their dad this is so different and just imagine bit engine policing you're just starting out and you get a phone call from from Elton John do you think we didn't have all when I started out there was no social media no mobile phones you did press you sometimes if you lucky the TV you did radio and you played live yeah and now you've got all these other distractions and your based on your chart position and and somebody like Sam fender comes along and changes the rules by being so great life you've got to be able to play live to sustain a career and have a catalogue hmm so that's why bands like Coldplay month and the Sun will always be fine because they have a catalogue they have a following they'll always be able to be a musician when I've you know when I nearly went bankrupt when I fell out in my manager I thought I'm not gonna bother just just sue because it'll take me years and years and years to go to court I don't want that around me I'm always be able to earn a living yeah because that's what musicians do whether it's in a pub whether it's do what I do if you can play and you can entertain you'll never be broke that's true it's very you really came through the you you know the way that you mentor people and you don't need to do that and the way you're almost like an agony uncle to people who who are maybe in the public eye and going through a tough time and under the radar there you are saying look I'm here if you need to learn the people you've helped with as well absolutely money you've raised for charity is extraordinary I am very blessed Lorain of what I've been able to achieve I nearly lost it all because of my addiction I got it back because I worked very hard to become so you don't just get sober by just changing you know you have to put a lot of work into it but I've been so lucky and so fortunate to have had the life I've had and at 72 years of age it's getting better and I have a billion is that I'm I'm every night I say I'm saying my prayers think thank you so much this is ridiculous I have you know it's horrible things happen people are now dying my age my friends die and every week there's someone who's ill relatives died and that's part of life but now I know how to handle it I don't have to run away and shut the door and have a bottle of whiskey anymore I can you know grow up a little bit don't grew up too much no no no dude and you said when he's around any new we have a fantastic night tonight thank you very much enjoy talking I'm really looking forward to it because I'm sure we will get into ourselves we will get ourselves into trouble oh you think that's gonna be a career-ending interview Friday you
