everyone knows tesla is the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer since the company's launch in 2003 elon musk has been dedicated to improving living standards through fantastic technology and protecting our green earth while at it as the world moves towards more renewable energy and transportation solutions to fight climate change the popularity of electric vehicles is spiking and the technology behind it is ever evolving with tesla at the forefront of this revolution the company has announced its next big plan the introduction of a new energy source hydrogen fuel cells but then that brings the question what are hydrogen fuel cells and how will they change your driving experience join us as we explore the possibilities that exist with these amazing fuel cells and how tesla has expanded these possibilities even more elon musk has dabbled into what seems like every area of technological advancement from space technology to social media elon musk is involved in everything and his businesses are at the forefront of every sphere they occupy one of the causes he's particularly interested in is climate change and how standards of living can be altered to prevent its advancement with that in mind elon musk has invested into every eco-friendly project you can think of and uses every platform he has to improve climate change we all know that vehicles are one of the largest contributors to climate change due to fuel combustion this is because their engines produce gases that adversely affect climate and reduce air quality however electric cars have proven to be better alternatives and are slowly replacing conventional cars tesla elon musk's multi-billion dollar automotive company is the largest electric vehicle manufacturer globally producing half a million electric cars yearly tesla is almost 50 responsible for how electric cars are now much more socially acceptable like most automobile manufacturers tesla produces electric cars that run on batteries these batteries can be compared with your laptop battery but they're larger and most times have longer charging times electric vehicle batteries typically contain stacks of cells organized into units and these stacks of cells are charged with electricity from the grid through a charging station or by plugging the vehicle into a power socket the batteries have features that help them conserve energy but like your laptop battery they can only go so long until they need to be charged again based on the long charging time range anxiety and cost of acquiring a battery electric vehicle consumers are discouraged from purchasing one of these cars however automobile engineers have discovered an alternative that eliminates most of these disadvantages this alternative power source is hydrogen in response to this discovery elon musk gave a rather shocking response he stated that hydrogen as a power source is more of a marketing strategy for automakers than a long-term solution he also claimed that even the very best hydrogen technology doesn't come close to the energy density of a modern lithium-ion battery pack like that found in the model s an electric car produced by tesla according to elon musk hydrogen technology is only acceptable when adapted to rocket technology regardless of his comment other automobile brands continued producing vehicles using this new technology so what is a hydrogen fuel cell and how does it work the fuel cell is an efficient power plant strategically positioned among the other components of the car's machinery along its bottom and works with other elements to produce energy other elements include a battery electric engine and hydrogen tank the neck of the tank is located on one of the car's sides and can be replenished at a hydrogen station and under five minutes through this outlet one fuel cell cannot generate sufficient electricity to power up an appliance as large as a vehicle so several fuel cells are stacked one on top another and all work simultaneously to create the right amount of energy in the fuel cell a process known as reverse electrolysis occurs where hydrogen reacts with oxygen the hydrogen is supplied from one or more hydrogen tanks present depending on the structure of the car while the surrounding air supplies the oxygen when these two elements react the electrical energy needed to power the vehicle is produced fuel cells are constantly supplied with the chemicals necessary to run therefore it's impossible to run out and electricity is constantly being generated the generated electricity can go one of two routes depending on the vehicle's needs it can be directly supplied to the electric motor from where it powers the vehicle or it charges the battery which stores the energy until it's required compared with the battery of other electric vehicles the battery of a fuel cell electric vehicle is significantly smaller because it's constantly being charged by the fuel cell although in the public's mind hydrogen fuel cells are lagging and scientists believe hydrogen fuel cell batteries hold a lot of promise and rest assured they'll catch up in a couple of years apart from electrical energy the fuel cell produces water as a byproduct this is let off as pure water vapor through the exhaust water vapor is not an environmentally hazardous gas so fuel cell electric vehicles contribute positively to the purity of air however whether it reduces climate change is a completely different question the quality of the hydrogen used to fill the tank determines whether the byproducts of the fuel cell contribute to climate change or not the quality the hydrogen produce is determined by the source of the energy utilized in its production if renewable energy sources are utilized the hydrogen production has a neutral carbon footprint and when this hydrogen is burnt in a fuel cell its byproducts aren't a threat to the climate however the reverse applies when non-renewable energy sources are used in hydrogen production the hydrogen fuel cell technology proves that electromobility can be different from people's preconception of it however from a user's standpoint what is the difference in the driving experience one of the most observable differences is engine sounds electric cars are unlike mechanically powered cars this is because electric cars are propelled entirely by electrical energy so you'll notice how incredibly quiet the car is when you drive one there are no noises when the engine is powered making a ride in these cars the standard for stealth and quiet transportation hydrogen fuel cars stand out even among their electric car counterparts considering charging time battery electric cars take between 30 minutes and several hours to fully charge depending on the battery capacity and other factors however hydrogen fuel cars are ready to go in no time provided the hydrogen tanks are full this makes them as flexible as conventional cars the ability to charge their batteries on the go coupled with the amount of energy a hydrogen tank can dissipate gives fuel cell cars a larger range than fully electric vehicles although the range of a battery electric car can be improved it'll involve getting a larger battery consequently the solution not only adds to the car's weight but also increasing charging time with a full hydrogen tank a fuel cell can last approximately 500 kilometers and in five minutes of refueling it's ready to go another 500 kilometers on april 1 2022 elon musk shocked the world when he announced via twitter that from 2024 tesla would be producing only hydrogen fuel cell cars this came as a shock because in the past elon musk dubbed hydrogen fuel cells full cells and called the technology mind-bogglingly stupid the billionaire wrote i was wrong about full cells they're amazing after years of skepticism the change in the direction is due to terminal problems encountered during the mass production of the 4680 batteries in his tweet elon musk mentioned that the first vehicle to be made with the hydrogen fuel cells will be named model age he also stated that model h will feature groundbreaking technology and is expected to hit 60 miles per hour in just 1.2 seconds with a range of 450 kilometers you can now order your model h on tesla's website exclusively in dogecoin model h is the first hydrogen powered car to expect from tesla and it most definitely won't be the last model 2 and model 0 are expected to be released in 2025 and 2027 respectively and both are expected to be super cars hydrogen fuel cars are more expensive to acquire and fuel mainly due to the rarity of the cars and hydrogen stations this is likely to change in the next decade as reducing the rate of climate change is a huge priority and most automobile companies are hopping on the moving train and if you like this video make sure to check out more on our channel or click the one on your screen now
