so jeff keeley's summer game fest kickoff presentation just wrapped up and although there wasn't a ton of new stuff we did get a nice juicy trailer for elden ring after so long this one is legit it's the first real footage of the actual game so we've got some quick bits for you here some things in the trailer you may have missed as well as a bunch of observations and speculation we're very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one in the comments too so first off story wise at first glance it seems like you are a tarnished looking for the elden ring the way the characters use the word tarnish to me sounds like ashen one or hollow from the dark souls games you are in a fallen world seemingly with a fallen order and it's up to you to do rpg stuff now according to the new updated official website we found you are in the lands between it's ruled by queen marika the eternal but the elden ring is shattered and marika's demi-god offspring took the ring shards and they're called great runes and triggered a massive war that tore this world apart someone must extinguish by flame is said by an unknown narrator in the game a winking nod or or does flame play an important role in the lore of this game as well just speculating now we did catch glimpses of what look like different characters and character builds with different move sets so it looks like once again your character is totally up to player choice but way more we'll get to that in a bit one of the biggest things of course uh the change up to the from software formula is a bigger open world with horse traversal we've known about this creator hidetaka miyazaki has talked about this publicly we saw some leaks of it a few months back actually with some footage but here it is front and center just a big old horse it looks like you can summon this mount at any time and judging by the landscapes we see in multiple shots here in the trailer it does look like you might spend a lot of time on this guy here's hoping he doesn't get killed off like the red dead two horse or our tax from never ending story i'm not ready to handle that anyways it looks like the horse can navigate difficult terrain possibly jump on command which is really nice and also use jump portal type things to traverse long distances or or just massive differences in elevation like scaling cliffs which is pretty cool and convenient especially for a game i'm betting won't be very convenient most of the time but this open world is said to be seamlessly connected from complex spooky dungeons to large fantasy landscapes according to the game's official website the giant tree at the start of the trailer looks very similar to either the enormous tree that you can see from the firelink shrine in dark souls 1 and the ruid landscape is very reminiscent of the desolate and destroyed version of the ringed city in dark souls 3. now knowing how this series usually works everything we see in the background that's notable can hopefully probably be visited at some point the world looks way bigger and more open than anything seen in previous from software games now speaking of that horse we also got a glimpse of mounted combat which potentially can be very exciting and a big new change for from soft games along with that we also saw a moment where stealth looks possible it seems confirmed from the website stealth builds are a thing the crouch looks suspiciously similar to what you do in sakura it also seems like your character can jump both around town and in combat which is great which leads to uh the trailer seemingly showing many different combat styles and approaches this doesn't look like it'll be a more focused experience like a bloodborne or a sakura it looks like they're expanding the possibilities of character builds especially now that sneaking and horse riding are incorporated into the main gameplay loop many weapons are shown and this seems to be some of the biggest game changers we've seen spears great swords bows a whip these double things at 214 a giant hammer at 2 16 a magic staff at 2 26 time in the trailer what looks like arm blades or punch daggers or claws at 228 and of course all kinds of swords and shields so build variety is definitely back in the game especially with a nice dash of weird magical stuff too at 127 the player charges up some kind of special attack it's either some kind of magic ability or it's possible that dark souls 3 style weapon arts are back in the game uh also just want to point out an unending curse is mentioned sounds like the game will have mechanics similar to dark souls which isn't too much of a surprise obviously we've been talking about the whole video but every from software game has that same type of die comeback repeat mechanic and in a lot of the games it's almost always described as a curse and when we hear a curse mention here we can't help but just jump to that this game might be much more non-linear than the other games there is probably some form of level gating by having challenging enemies in different areas but we know like i said earlier the world is more connected so i wonder how they'll handle this stuff some new from software spin on things i don't know but we know that the game will have cooperative play possibly up to four players we got to see a character summon other players in a sort of dark souls like style so just from that glimpse you can tell that character build variety and weapon type stuff is crazy noticeable once other characters jump in like it just looks like insane chaos in a good way the bandai namco website does reference and i quote calling upon your allies for aid and i wonder if you can also get ai companions who knows there appear to be actual npcs in the world in this one and and possibly they aren't enemies just people who inhabit this world other characters would show up in the world of dark souls and stuff but they were all specific characters rather than pedestrian type characters and they could all be enemies however now here we have like the walking creature with a bell what could that purpose possibly be are the bells his testicles or should i go for smarter speculation you know bells are a common motif in the souls game so it could be significant or it just could be a weird detail i don't know then there's the gross dudes pulling the cart which begs the question and might lead to more open world stuff like is this just some emergent activity in the world maybe some loot to find or a side quest i just want to know what the deal is with these gross dudes anyway speaking of which enemies for us the star of the show was the enemy types and wow almost every single frame of this trailer is filled with either crazy art direction and beautiful designs or over the top from software style enemies and bosses it looks like they're firing on all cylinders this time around in the art and design department my goodness some are super gross and spooky some fill up the entire screen and all of them look great we also got a nice look at a big gross bad guy with a bunch of arms and hands this was actually the guy who was teased seemingly during that first elden ring cinematic trailer that you've probably re-watched a thousand times we can't wait to get our ass kicked by him now thanks to the trailer we got some great official art and a really cool poster with this ring motif where it's not just one ring which could lead to more story type speculation but anyway uh we do know it's going to be for playstation 5 playstation 4 xbox one xbox series x and s and pc on steam and as of right now the release date is january 21st 2022 which is pretty sweet now we have talked in the past about the pandemic and people working from home and development for a lot of studios being slowed down so there's still a lot of people speculating that this could be delayed but let's hang on to hope for a second and let's just hope that this release date sticks and we got something really cool to play in the winter because judging by the responses a ton of people are really really looking forward to this game from software and dark souls fans are itching for this one there is some talk online about the graphical fidelity uh some people think it looks a little bit too last gen but if you ask us here we don't really play the from software games for their graphics we play them for the raw gameplay and just the little glimpses we got it seems like it delivers but that's a little speculation that's some things you might have missed and some observations and personal opinion on our part i want to hear from you guys in the comments what you think of this glorious trailer are people overhyping it are they going crazy do you love from software games and you can eat this stuff up whatever side of the fence you're on whatever neighborhood you live definitely let us know down in the
