Most music is "compressed," both slightly on the way in, per-channel in post, and then in mastering. It's what we associate with something sounding professional.
Also, for what it's worth, that mic (SM7B) is a dynamic mic that needs a ton of gain -- his quiet notes, esp. as he rocks away from the mic, would disappear without a touch of compression.
This session is mixed to sound intimate and to attempt not to be the quietest thing in Youtube.
It gets worse, I guess I'm saying? Chances are if you heard it totally flat you wouldn't like that much either.
David Bowie's new album sounds pretty compressed, but I've only heard it on spotify.
