Johnny figured him with the court of any other folks involved pilla Sally he figured that the last show should be this compilation kind of show just you know all the comedians all the actresses all the the actors I you know just a study of them and many of them had died in the time we were on the air many of them had left us and there was old it's almost like that what they do in the academy we're the ones we've gone the past year they do that little tribute to our loved ones who are gone so was similar to that but there were also current people in there but it was just you know this happened what a time we had look at this we had these people on the show but the show the night before was the real final show in a sense its final show of the normal format and Johnny wanted that particularly to have two people Bette Midler we had discovered Bette Midler in a in a Turkish bath in New York her gig was well the guys were waiting for between steam and rub while they were waiting and they all gather she would come out with a school wrapped in a Turkish towel and sit on the stool and sing to the God now we thought that was wonderful and we wanted to do that on the show and the censor thought that was too sexy I was just - couldn't have a woman in a turkey stop now so I had to find a Turkish towel that you know now why'd they come out in a wash rag anyway she was a made her debut on television on this and I show now she's a major multi multi star be good to have her own Robin Williams we had had great success with him whenever he was on it was raucous it was crazy it was bombardment uncontrollable off-the-wall so what a nice combination a sweet nice lady who great entertainer little salty but also a great entertainer Robin a crazy man so that was the show that you know that was like the premiere closeout show and that's where she saying that great song and put in that song the line that really defines Carson's 30 years in my opinion he sang one from my baby with new lyrics and she said I know you're getting anxious to close I mean you're getting anxious to say goodbye and then she said the line came up thanks for the last thanks for the tears night and then and all the class that you showed and I think that is the word in their class that really defines how Johnny approached that show it was classy and even though he was that Midwestern kid Peck's bad boy oh gosh Johnny kind of guy even though that was true he totally defined humor with class and she had that line in the song and when I heard that line and I'm up when I ever think of that or an interview if I'm mentioning it I always say that's the line that told how the 30 years went all the class that you show Robin of course was frenetic crazy and who knows what he said because I I know he doesn't remember but it was wonderful so it was a great show and Johnny was moved to tears he really was moved to tears when she sang that song to him
