collected you can watch in video the offering and tithing joseph bates was considered a madman when he put god first even then he didn't give up what can we learn from joseph bates today that will help us put god first in our own lives he was a retired sea captain when he first heard william miller's message of christ's soon second coming he was confident it was true abates was the kind of man who put god first in everything so he gave his energy money and even sold his house to help spread the news of the second coming but when everything he hoped for did not happen bates didn't give up 1843 came and went and christ did not return then the great disappointment of 1844 shook the faith of bates and the other millerites they were ridiculed and forced to rebuild their lives in utter poverty since everything they had was sacrificed for the cause bates and others return to their study of the scriptures to find that instead of marking christ's return october 22nd 1844 was the date christ entered the heavenly sanctuary to intercede before the father on behalf of believers now one day bates didn't have anything to eat at home he pled with god and promised to remain faithful no matter what happened that day an envelope arrived with enough money to sustain him god had inspired someone to send this money in preparation for the day bates needed it the most as he continued to study with friends bates discovered the truth of the seventh-day sabbath and shared this with his fellow believers james and ellen white this small group of leaders soon founded the seventh-day adventist church which has grown into a worldwide movement today joseph bates put god first even when he was laughed at his courage inspires us today jesus gave up everything to redeem us and his love compels us to put his kingdom first in our own lives as we return the tithe and our promise offering we are challenged to put god first good morning and happy sabbath it's good to see all of you here our reading scripture today is coming from the book uh the book of isaiah 56 of verse 6 and 7. i'm going to give you a moment so that we can look and read together okay also the sons of the foreigner who joined themselves to the lord to serve him and to love the name of the lord to be his servants everyone who keeps from defiling the sabbath and holds fast by covenant even then i'll bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful joyful in my house of prayer their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be pray will will be accepted on my altar for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations may god bless his word thank you sister for those of you joining us online i just want to let you know there's no children's story this morning because here at edmond central we have resumed our children's church so the kids are downstairs learning about god in a way that is best suited to their age group that's happening every other week so if you're planning on coming just bear that in mind with your kids next week we'll we'll have our children's story and then we'll go back to children's church the following week and so on um but i just want to say welcome everyone i see a lot of faces here that i don't recognize and and many that i do happy sabbath it's good to have you all here in god's house a house of prayer for all nations and that's what we will we will call our sermon this morning i want to take you back in time with me to 2009 in my life my wife graciously agreed for me to go on a study tour to israel greece and turkey by myself in exchange she went to whistler to be with my parents and her and her parents as well in the mountains i was in the hill country of judea and she was in the hill country of british columbia now when you go to israel with a group one of the things that you have to do is go with the government tour guide and one of the places that they make sure to take you is yad vashem which is the holocaust memorial outside of jerusalem now previous to visiting yad vashem my parents had taken me to the national holocaust memorial in washington dc and on my own i had visited the former concentration camps at dachau and auschwitz and i told the tour guide on the way there sir i have seen enough rooms full of shoes and suitcases and even human hair to get what happened there i don't need to go through another one of these museums and he said fair enough you don't have to go with the group you're on your own now i had a mission while i was there that day they planted trees to represent the righteous among the nations the righteous among the gentiles and i knew that they had planted a tree there for a seventh-day adventist john henry widener and if you ever get a chance to read his book or the book about his life flee the captor and there was recently an academic monograph published about him as well it was very interesting i found the tree planted for that seventh-day adventist dutchman who rescued many jews from uh from the genocide and took a photograph of that and and then well what else was i going to do with my time as i was wandering around the grounds maybe the av team may need to dim the lights so you can see this i came across these um pillars sticking the screen's not going to pick it up here these these pillars sticking out of the ground and i said well that looks interesting i wonder what's over there i did not know at the time that this was the a special installation at yad vashem called the children's memorial memorial to the children who were killed during the holocaust you know i didn't want to see another room full of shoes but yet i ended up in the children's memorial hey you walk in there and the first thing you see projected on the wall is all these images of children and it occurred to me while i was there at this time that you know the reason that we can even do this is because the germans were such meticulous record keepers right um we have very good records of who died in that event these are pictures of children who died during that genocide and i said wow you know this is pretty intense right and their names are being read if i recall correctly in this room and then the next picture comes up next picture next picture you can spend as long as you want there maybe for some people to be meaningful to see a family member's photo come up after you've had enough time in that room you walk into a different room and it looks like this there are lights suspended at different levels and a hall of mirrors around so that it appears as if the lights are going on in regular intervals into infinity in all directions and you make of it what you will some art critics have said it's kind of you know not a very good installation but when i was in there i imagined as as if each of those points of light were the memory of god of an individual waiting to be raised up from the dead at the resurrection and i walked out and i was i was profoundly moved i thought i was i i had an experience that i think would have been more meaningful than going to the regular memorial at yad vashem which is which uh you know here's here's the the the one of the the main features of of the memorial that's there uh uh you know a rotunda photographs now i've been talking about yad vashem but you may not know what that means in hebrew in hebrew yad means hand okay but it can also mean by extension a memorial a monument to something a hand that gives you an indication that something important is here ava simply means and and shem means name so yad vashem is a monument and a name to those who perished in that atrocity but interestingly it comes from the biblical book of isaiah and that's where i want to take us this morning isaiah chapter 56 there is a promise here that is very significant i believe for christian and jewish relationships and i'm very happy that we didn't study it in our quarterly study in isaiah you remember that one a few months ago because now i get to preach on it to you and and maybe you'll recognize this for the first time we're going to start with verse 1. now and and if you recall from our study of isaiah we're in the back end of isaac right where he's prophesizing about what happens when the messiah comes and when the world gets made new in all of these things right isaiah chapter 56 verse 1 thus says the lord i'm speaking for god now says the prophet keep justice and do righteousness for my salvation is about to come and my righteousness to be revealed who is god's righteousness the lord our righteousness jesus christ right the messiah is about to come in other words reading this now with new testament eyes blessed is the man who does this and the son of man who lays hold on it who does what who lays hold on what well he's going to explain it who keeps from defiling the sabbath and keeps his hand from doing any evil this is interesting the sabbath command here is being highlighted as of special importance for the time after god's righteousness is revealed at the coming of the messiah and then also don't do any other evil god says right let's keep going verse 3 do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the lord now let me just stop there they had laws about foreigners who joined in with god's people right there were so many generations that had to go through before they could be fully accepted into the covenant community of israel right so you have a foreigner who's joined himself to god's people but his son may not have had enough generations go through he might say well maybe my grandchildren might be able to get into israel right but me i'm i'm kind of half in half out okay so don't let that person that son of the foreigner who joined himself to the lord speak saying the lord has utterly separated me from his people nor let the eunuch say here i am a dry tree we're talking about the future right is there a place among god's people for the gentiles for the righteous among the nations the word gentile and nation meaning the same thing in hebrew is there a future for the eunuch who cannot produce offspring he's not going to have a line that continues ancestral lands that that get passed down through the covenant community you see why this this is a significant for for for people who are uh have experienced something like genocide right where's our future god where's the future you promised verse 4 don't let them say those things for thus says the lord to the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths now it's in the plural right so we talk about the sabbath we're talking about the weekly sabbath the day that we're observing today but there's also the rest of the sabbaths right like the day of atonement and passover and all those other things right so you have you have a eunuch a man who can't reproduce he's not supposed to even go into the sanctuary and do the observances that you're supposed to do on those other sabbath days he's not allowed to go in to the temple precincts and offer sacrifices according to israel's law to the eunuchs those eunuchs who keep my sabbaths and do what pleases me and hold fast my covenant even to them i will give and in my house and within my walls a monument and a name a place and a name yad vashem right even though you can't go and offer those sacrifices if you observe those things as best you can you'll have a monument and a name better than sons and daughters did you catch it you'll be remembered you have a future with me god says even though your line was cut off even though you lost those people you have a future with me i will give them an everlasting name they shall not be cut off and those of you who attend the sabbath afternoon sessions with me know that being cut off was a special kind of punishment reserved for the worst crimes that only god could inflict on somebody and it meant having their family line ended and their property being dispersed among others this almost happened to the line that david came from right and we have the book of ruth telling us how god redeemed that family back and god is saying to these eunuchs i'll do something like that for you it's a promise of heaven and eternal life in the grandest sense but let's keep going there's something there for for for the rest of us too because i don't know how many of you have any jewish and ancestry but i don't when i was in israel i knew it was what it was like to be treated like a gentile yeah you go around and you can just tell those who are wearing the men who are wearing the thing on their head right you know you're you're somehow excluded you don't know how it is but you have this sense that i don't belong but one friday afternoon we were going to a conservative synagogue to see how they bring in the sabbath and when you go to synagogue if you're jew gentile doesn't matter you you put one of these on right so i was wearing one of those but some of our group had become separated from us and so i volunteered to step outside the synagogue since i'm very tall you know and stand there so that they could see where where we were and and join us right so i'm standing outside with one of these on my head and one of the hasidim what we call in english the altered orthodox comes by and he looks at me and says something in hebrew and i said you know i don't understand and he said to me in english what time is it and i gave him the time and he said oh no and he took off walking even more quickly than they usually do and i said oh that's interesting with one of these on my head i look jewish and i'm treated as one of the people right but i'm a foreigner i'm a i'm a gentile right i'm not of god's covenant people by birth i'm not descended of abraham physically i suspect most of us here are in the same category there's a promise for us here just like the promise for the eunuch also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the lord and serve him and to love the name of the lord and to be his servants everyone who keeps from defiling the sabbath and holds fast my covenant all right there's a there's a prophecy here of the sons of the foreigners being joined to israel just just like that and what are their qualities they hold fast to to the covenant god made with israel and say let that be for me too and what do they do they keep the sabbath not those other sabbaths but the sabbath right the weekly sabbath the day of rest god set apart even those people god says well i'm trying to there we go even them even even me god says even even david hamstra that gentile even questi amo right even quit yo right even you god says even karen williams even deepak tapa i will bring to my holy mountain i will make them joyful in my house of prayer all right these are people who are not supposed to be going to the temple to worship god they have to wait so many generations before they can come in and offer those sacrifices like the eunuch they're excluded but they can now come in to the house of prayer the temple precincts their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar for my house shall be called what a house of prayer for how many nations all nations we run ourselves into this problem of exclusion again and again god's people do and say oh these people you know we have to keep them out or we'll be defiled in some way right it's the same impulse that ultimately leads to genocide if only we can purify ourselves of those bad people then we will have the blessed community but god says that's not the way my house is my house is for all nations there is a sacrifice that the eunuch has there is a sacrifice that the gentile has it's the sacrifice of jesus christ there's no limitations placed on that sacrifice it was made on behalf of all and all can benefit from it and it brings them with joy to god's house [Music] verse 8 the lord god who gathers the outcasts of israel says yet i will gather to him who's him here israel right israel is sometimes we forget that israel is a person right he used to have another name jacob and we're not going to go into all that but israel's his covenant name right god is saying to israel pers you know personified right i will gather to israel others i like that the new king james puts that in a capital o right capital o others i'll gather to him others besides those who are gathered to him in other words after this time of exile that you've gone through living in babylon after i gather you back from among the nations god says it's not just going to be a gathering back of the the the the literal descendants of israel right the strangers the outcasts the eunuchs who have no literal descendants the gentiles they're going to be gathered in as well and what's going to happen when they get gathered they're going to worship me on the day that i created holy for all humanity did you see how the sabbath was a theme there this is a question that troubled people in the time of jesus when that gathering in was taking place troubles christians today as well must we become jews to become christians did you know that right now in american evangelicalism there's a movement of christians who are dissatisfied with you know a kind of lazy consumerist entertainment version of christianity they're tired of of of entertainment driven worship and they want to get back to something more biblical and so they've decided to keep all the old testament laws in essence to become jews in order to be better christians the same thing was happening in the time of the apostles there were people going around telling the christians you all have to be circumcised in order to become christian because circumcision is a permanent sign of the covenant we don't have to go into that today that's another study at the point it was a big controversy and so they met together in jerusalem to settle things at the first ecumenical council jerusalem council is in acts chapter 15. we're going to go there and they have a debate about things and then there's kind of a consensus that's arrived at and i want us to study that consensus this morning acts chapter 15 verse 19. the consensus is articulated by james the leader of the jerusalem church probably the relative of jesus here's what he says therefore i judge that we should not trouble those from among the gentiles who are turning to god in other words we don't require them to do anything except the following but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols from sexual immorality from things strangled and from blood now how did the world did he come up with that list that the gentiles who are turning to god have to abstain from things polluted by idols in other words meat that's been offered to idols and we see paul dealing with this elsewhere in his letters from sexual immorality we see paul dealing with that a lot in his letters and from eating blood that never shows up in the new testament again but it comes all the way down from noah where god tells noah you can have the meat but don't eat the blood where'd he come up with this list well it's very interesting if you go to the book of leviticus and read the laws there that you will see that not all of the laws that god gave to israel applied strictly to israel some of them also applied to the resident foreigners the strangers the foreigner who's joined himself to the lord okay and they may not do some very interesting things number one they may not offer sacrifices to idols right and what does james say oh they can't do that the foreigners who've joined themselves to the lord jesus shouldn't do those things as well right also they should not practice what sexual immorality and sure enough don't do those things comes up in james's list and finally they should not eat blood and that also comes in james in other words will they recognize that this is the time of the fulfillment of isaiah 56 when foreigners are joining themselves to god and going right in in the first generation but they still need to follow the laws that god has given for them the instructions and there's reasons for those instructions we don't have to get into that today as well i want to stay focused on another issue which is in acts chapter 15 verse 21. here he highlights something by way of an aside he gives the reason why they should abstain from those three things and here's the reason why for moses has throughout many generations those who preach him in every city being read in the synagogues every sabbath so you know how the the popular religions of our day in in the in the western world in canada and europe and america they come from asia right especially east asia yeah buddhism right very popular uh you know kind of mystical and people are like ooh you know that that's that's new and exotic and interesting i want to find out here right am i right yeah and in every city you find people doing this preaching these religions people in orange robes come up to me in the airports and say hey read this book about how to get enlightened and whatever well there was a a popular religion from asia that was going around europe in the time of jesus it wasn't from east asia it was from west asia and it was what judaism and and in every city there were israelite preachers rabbis teaching the law of moses and interested greeks and romans learning about god from them and on what day did they do these things the sabbath day notice how sabbath isn't even controversial here it doesn't even come up for controversy that's how assumed it is and we find this in exodus chapter 20 verses 9 to 10 where god gives the sabbath commandment six days you shall labor do all your work the seventh day is the sabbath to the lord your god on it you shall not do any work you your son your daughter your male servant your female servant your cattle or who the stranger the resident foreigner the foreigner who's joined himself to the lord he also must keep the sabbath right so add to that list of not doing idolatry not doing sexual immorality not eating the blood what's another thing the resident foreigner has to do respect the seventh day and keep it holy well there was a later ecumenical council in the church who reversed this it's the council of laodicea happened around the year 364 a.d and its canons its teachings were promulgated to the christian church and in canon 29 we find this christians must not judaize by resting on the sabbath but must work on that day did you catch it the sabbath command says don't work on this day the council of laodicea says work on that day right but must work on that day rather honoring the lord's day the lord stared that diese domini in latin being which day of the week the first day sunday and if they can then resting as christians so where the sabbath command says you must rest on the seventh day the council of laodicea says you should honor sunday and rest if it's possible but if it's not possible to rest on sunday no big deal but if any shall be found to be judaizers and they appear to find judaizing as resting on the seventh day of the week let them be anathema from christ they're out of the christian community it's interesting why would they do that well it seems that at this time this was a controversy in the church right some were resting on sabbath others had decided not to and the council of laodicea tried to settle the matter in favor of not resting on sabbath well there's a spiritual reason for this that goes way back into the book of daniel we don't have time for it today but the sociological reason is this the jews went from being the very popular religion of the roman empire the exotic and popular religion to being the worst religion why because they rebelled too many times against roman rule they lost their special exemption to not have to worship the emperor and christians on the ascendancy in the roman empire now did not want to be associated with this group that was tearing the empire apart and so they said we will hold ourselves apart as different from those bad jews we are the good christians before this time christians were a part of judaism jews who believed that their messiah had come and they worshipped a certain messiah jesus christ now we're not jews anymore no and to prove it to you we don't rest on this day any longer the word judaizer here comes from galatians chapter 2 verse 14 where paul rebukes peter for holding himself apart from table fellowship with the uncircumcised gentile believers all rights but when i saw that they do not walk straight forwardly according to the truth of glad tidings i said to peter before all if thou being a jew livest as the nations that is the gentiles and not as the jews how dost thou compel the nations that is the gentile believers to judaize i had to search for a while to find a translation that retained this expression judaize most of them translate it to live as jews or something like that this is the darby okay which tries to be literal in a certain way what's paul talking about here is he saying is he rebuking peter for asking people to keep sabbath no he's rebuking peter for holding himself apart from those who are uncircumcised the issue here is circumcision not sabbath in fact for paul uh christians and jews could worship together and do things together on se it was it was a day especially for instruction and teaching acts chapter 13 verses 42 and 44 paul luke actually writing here says when the jews went out of the synagogue the gentiles begged that these words that paul was preaching might be preached to them the next sabbath and then on the next sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of god i want to ask you an interesting question i'd ask myself if christians had always rested on the seventh day and maintained that connection as the wild olive branch right getting grafted on to the main tree this is paul's metaphor for the gentiles coming in you've got an olive tree and you chop off the you know the domestic branch and you put on a branch from wild olive tree do a graft right if we as the wild olive branch had maintained that sabbath connection with the tree trunk would the holocaust have ever happened i mean it's impossible to answer right history didn't play out that way but when religions split up they divide the religious territory you see and when christianity and judaism split apart in those times a christian said we'll take grace you take the law right the jews said you take the messiah we'll take you know the temple right jews really downplay the messiah after those failed rebellions right and the sabbath suffered the same fate it's like parents getting a divorce and splitting the kids apart right sabbath went with the jews the christians said now we'll we'll we're not going to do that one anymore one commandment that god said to remember right galatians chapter 2 verse 30 pardon me galatians chapter 3 verse 28 paul says that in christ there's neither jew nor greek right we're one in christ jesus and in christ jesus there is no sense that we don't have to do the sabbath commandment that god gave to adam the old testament says that when the fullness of the nations come into israel that that will be part of that everlasting covenant that was started with adam and will still have the sabbath as a time of great importance to us the time when we get together and worship god and i worry that sometimes we we treat the jews a little bit like the older brother in the parable of the prodigal son you know well we we accepted you jesus right we accepted you so we're we're the we're the favored children those guys over there they didn't do the right things you know they're they're off in their own world they haven't really caught up to where we are yet but those folks have been more faithful to certain things of what god has asked than christians have by and large through many years we need to remember that we're one in christ jesus because paul said if that wild if that original olive branch got chopped off how much more easily will it get grafted back on than the wild olive branch so my appeal to you today if you think that we don't have to do certain things that are in the old testament because jesus came well have another look at that my friends see if there isn't more continuity between old and new than what you saw before and when you see jewish people on the street in the community you know we have we have quite of a community of jews in this city i want you to not think of them as poor cousins but as brothers people who are still working toward a better understanding of god just as we are i want to invite our musicians to come back up and we're going to sing a song of praise to our friend jesus what a friend we have in jesus all our sins and griefs to bear what a friend [Music] to carry [Music] oh all because we do not care everything to god in prayer is there trouble anywhere we should never be discouraged take it to the lord in prayer can we find a friend so [Music] jesus knows our every weekness take it to the lord in prayer [Music] take it to the lord in prayer do thy friends despise forsake leave take it to the lord it prays in his arms [Music] let's remain standing and receive the blessing of the lord the lord bless you and keep you the lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you the lord lift up his face toward you and give you peace peace be with you until we meet again in god's house and on his day amen you may be seated for those of you who've joined us online we thank you so much for tuning in god bless you we hope to see you here in the building soon but wherever you're joining us from here in edmonton or around the world we'll be back next sabbath at the same time in the same place god bless you all
