that jesus had to pass have you ever had a really hard test before we're going to learn more about that in our story but first let's sing a song g'day kids let's sing my god is so big my god is so big so strong and so mighty there's nothing like i cannot do that's true my god is so big so strong [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello boys and girls today we're doing another verse from luke chapter 4 away and jesus said to him get behind me satan you shall worship the lord your god and him only shall you serve luke chapter four verse eight okay very good job this time let's take even more words away i think you got this and jesus said to him get behind me satan for you shall worship the lord your god and him only shall you serve luke chapter 4 verse 8 very good job one more time and jesus said to him get behind me satan for you shall worship the lord your god and him only shall you serve luke chapter four verse eight very good job boys and girls i'll see you next time g'day ranger ryan hey adventure andrew great to see you too tell me how was your week did you pay that fine oh yeah i did thanks so much for giving me that money you're welcome such a big help and i learned a really important lesson that is wonderful oh you see these whoa very yummy don't they these are my favorite hey let's have some ranger mine stop stop look the sign says don't touch that is a rule we are not allowed to touch those oh but adventure andrew these are my favorite i love these oh they do look very tasty they look yummy they are so tempting tempting kind of means being invited to do something you're not supposed to do so we really shouldn't touch these these are very tempting i know but maybe do you think we might be able to just have one they look yummy yeah we should yeah yum yum yum yum [Music] i think we have done the wrong thing the sign says don't touch we've both failed in this temptation we really need to stop but that does remind me of somebody who was tempted and did not fail jesus was tempted by the devil to do the wrong thing to disobey god's law but jesus resisted the temptation he obeyed god's word he did not sin we have failed though haven't we we have done the wrong thing oh man we should get away from this temptation and go somewhere else all right let's go last week we learned that jesus is the son of god you remember the announcement from heaven this is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased it's actually very interesting that in the old testament we learned that adam was called a son of god also the people of israel were called a son of god and jesus is god's son that reminds me that adam and israel both had a test but sadly adam and israel failed that test we're going to learn about jesus today and a test that he had but unlike adam and unlike israel jesus did not fail that test he passed the test you know why he passed that test because jesus is the promised messiah he is god's son now this brings me to a story in the gospel of luke chapter four and in this story we learn about the time after jesus baptism when he was led by the holy spirit into the desert into the wilderness what happened during this time was jesus was fasting that means he wasn't eating any food after 40 days jesus was very hungry that's understandable isn't it well it was during this time that the devil tempted jesus the devil wanted jesus to stay away from the mission that he's supposed to be on but we are going to learn in this story that jesus resisted the temptation and he proved that he is the messiah let's begin by reading the first two verses from this story this is taken from luke chapter 4 verses 1 and 2. then jesus being filled with the holy spirit returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness being tempted for 40 days by the devil and in those days he ate nothing and afterward when they had ended he was hungry now that reminds us a little bit of those stories that i mentioned to you just before it reminds us a little bit of adam in the garden of eden now it's a little bit different though isn't it here jesus is in a desert and he doesn't eat anything for 40 days but you remember adam was put in the garden of eden adam was allowed to eat everything in this garden but there was a tree he was told he was not allowed to eat that fruit and what happened the devil came along and he had tempted adam's wife and adam followed the things that eve had said to him and he disobeyed god he failed the test we also learned another story remember the people of israel were wandering around the desert not for 40 days but for 40 years and sadly during this time they were not trusting god they were wanting things to happen their way and they disobeyed god so when we learn about this story of jesus it does remind us of adam and the people of israel and what i want you to see is jesus doesn't fail like adam jesus doesn't fail like the people of israel jesus succeeds now what i want you to see in the rest of this passage is something that the devil does and what then jesus does the devil tries to get jesus to sin the devil is going to try really hard here and he has three temptations remember these temptations is the devil inviting jesus to disobey god he's inviting jesus to not do his mission jesus is on a mission isn't he we learned that last time he is the messiah he has come to bring the good news of the kingdom of god and satan wants jesus to get off that mission so let's have a look at the very first temptation it's found in luke chapter 4 verses 3 and 4 and it goes like this and the devil said to him if you are the son of god command this stone to become bread now jesus can perform miracles he can do amazing things jesus could turn a stone into bread very easily but how is this a temptation let's think about it is a miracle evil no it's not is eating bread evil no it's not but what makes this temptation bad what makes this a temptation what the devil here is doing is he wants jesus to use the great power that he has not to fulfill god's mission not to spread the good news of the kingdom but he wants him to use his power to please himself this here is a temptation to say jesus don't depend on god providing for you what does jesus do let's have a look at the next verse we read in luke chapter 4 and verse 4 but jesus answered him saying it is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of god wow you know what jesus did just there jesus quoted a verse from the old testament he quoted the word of god to satan satan is inviting jesus to not trust in the father and jesus resists that temptation by saying no and jesus trusts in the word of god so what jesus does here is jesus chooses to depend on god's word and not on his own power so satan has tried once to make jesus stay away from his mission he's tried once to make jesus disobey god and jesus has resisted that temptation well satan's not finished he's going to come back and try a second time let's have a look at the next temptation and this is found in verses 5 to 8. let's listen to what happens next then the devil taking him up on a high mountain showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time and the devil said to him all this authority i give to you and their glory for this has been delivered to me and i will give it to whomever i wish therefore if you will worship before me all will be yours now that is a huge promise satan there has shown jesus all the kingdoms of the world and he says to jesus this can all be yours you can rule over all of this you can have power over everything in the world all you have to do is bow down on the ground and worship me now that sounds very tempting that's an invitation to have all power over everything all jesus has to do is worship satan now i want you to notice that jesus resists that temptation this here is a temptation to basically say don't wait for god's timing i can give this to you now satan knows that jesus is going to be given power over everything jesus is going to rule over everything and satan's saying you don't have to do the job of the messiah you don't have to come into this world and preach the good news and then die on a cross instead worship me now and i will give everything to you now what does jesus say to that temptation let's have a look at his answer in luke chapter 4 and verse 8 jesus answered and said get behind me satan for it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him only shall you serve that's actually today's memory verse isn't it luke chapter 4 and verse 8 well jesus here once again resists the temptation how he quotes god's word again he goes back to the old testament and he says to the devil this is what god's word says and jesus resists the temptation satan is offering jesus power right now immediately but jesus instead chose to glorify god and not himself jesus has come for a mission and the mission is to be the messiah so jesus resists the second temptation well satan comes back a third time this time satan wants jesus to not trust god's way let's have a look at what satan says we read beginning in verse 9 then he brought him to jerusalem set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he shall give his angels charge over you to keep you and in their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone satan here is doing something very interesting he's tempting jesus again but this time he's tempting the jesus with the bible he's actually quoting from psalm 91 now that's actually very clever of the devil the devil has very clever ways of tempting us he knows how to tempt us to do things that aren't pleasing to god that sometimes are obvious but sometimes his temptations almost look like they're the right thing to do the devil is tempting jesus with god's word and here he's saying to jesus that you can make god prove that he loves you by you jumping off from this very high point and as before you fall and go splat on the ground wait for god to send angels and to rescue you and and people will go wow he's been saved satan says do that just do that and what does jesus do in response to this is that god's way for the messiah did god want the messiah to do something like that jesus responds in verse 12 by saying it has been said you shall not tempt the lord your god that is taken from the book of deuteronomy chapter 6 and verse 16. jesus here is saying i am going to trust god i'm not going to manipulate god we are not to test god what you're asking me to do is to test god and jesus resisted that temptation so satan has tried so hard to get jesus off track he doesn't want jesus to pass the test he wants jesus to fail the test like adam did he wants jesus to fail the test like the people of israel did in the old testament but what happened jesus didn't fail the test jesus passed the test and not only did he pass the test he passed the test perfectly now i've passed some tests i've also failed some tests but the test that i've passed i've never actually passed the test perfectly jesus did he passed this test without failing at all and what happened right at the end listen to verse 13 now when the devil had ended every temptation he departed from him until an opportune time satan was defeated jesus defeated satan and jesus has now proved that because he has passed this test he is the messiah jesus did what adam failed to do jesus did what israel failed to do jesus is the messiah and boys and girls that's why you can trust in jesus i also want you to remember as we close that all of us are tempted every day and we should remember that when we're being tempted we should move ourselves away from temptation remember the video before these are very tempting we should move away from temptation but we also should make sure that we fill our minds with god's word so that we know what god says but we're still going to fail we're still going to break god's law and that's why we have to trust jesus because he's the only one who never failed he's the only one who resists temptation and resisted it perfectly that's why we need to trust in him today we have three activities to get done so our first one is unscrambling this key verse so we have all these words here that we need to unscramble and fit into the verse this one obviously it looks like lord so we've got to fit it in somewhere in this verse where it makes sense our next activity to get done today is this crossword now i'm sure most of you know how to do a crossword but if you don't know you've got to answer these questions and see how it says down if you answer the question it goes down and across it goes across and our final activity to do is see what you know so you've got to answer the questions from the bible talk today so i'll do the first one with you who led jesus into the wilderness to be tempted that one is the holy spirit so what you've got to do is just circle it now go ahead and do the rest of them all by yourself and remember if you need help your mum and dad are always there go have fun well we have had a fun time today we've had some songs craft a bible memory verse and you got to see ranger ryan and myself today and of course we've had some bible lessons as well boys and girls i hope that you have enjoyed our time at the ebc kids corner hope to see you next time bye [Music]
