in this video i'm going to show you how to get rid of rising damp without employing a specialist and without spending a fortune and it works [Music] the system i'm going to show you at the moment is suitable for diy it's suitable for a builder we have no damp proof course in this wall i happen to know that this wall is nine inches thick which is what we call a solid wall in other words no cavity and what we're going to do is we're going to introduce some damp proofing material into the mortar core so if you look here you can see we've got the bricks and we've got the mortar now we want to do this around about 150 millimeters above the ground but we could go lower we could put two courses in but we start off by going 150 millimeters up and we put a continuous run of the special dry zone it's a kind of cream it's a kind of chemical that goes in and what it does is it reacts with the damp it's leached out as the damp comes to act on it and it waterproof so all the capillaries all the tiny little holes in the mortar courses are filled up with this glass-like material which just stops the water from rising up and i've used it on many many occasions and it does work so very very simple we just drill it and we fill it and after that it'll take a few months and you'll notice that the wall begins to dry out so first thing we need to know depth of the wall we happen to know this is a nine inch wall but if you're dealing with a cavity wall that's likely to be an 11 inch wall you can do your metric equivalent if you like and you can actually do the whole job from one side you don't need to go to your neighbor's house but obviously you don't want to be drilling through into your neighbor's house or anywhere else so what we do is we set it slightly less than the depth of the wall so we know that's nine inches so when you know what the depth of your wall is we'll set our depth stop so that we get this a nine inch wall so we're going to have eight inches of depth in there so just push that slightly back there what we're looking to do is when you look at the mortar you'll see a vertical joint there which is what we call the perp and you'll see the horizontal joint so we want to be putting a hole in at every perpendicular joint we can find now i said 150 millimeters so that would bring us in the middle of that brick so we can go one above it or one below it and i think it doesn't really matter too much which way we go because the fluid does spread through so let's go let's go one above it [Music] and the great thing is you can smell straight away that that is damp that's a very very clear indication so when you're looking for damp it's a good idea to use all your senses we're just sniffing around and you can find out where it's coming from so i'm going to continue doing this all the way along and then i'll show you the next stage [Music] [Music] so that's all there is to it really i mean it compared to a few years ago when you get a big drum of chemical and a pump and it used to take ages and the chemical leaked down in the cavity wall you know it was a nightmare this is just so easy all you need is a 10 millimeter masonry drill and anybody can do it if you want more information go to the safeguard chemical website there's also a handy booklet that they produce which explains the whole process i'm roger brisby thanks very much for watching come back and see us soon because we've got more for you [Music]
