Easiest Way To Caulk A Bathtub or Shower - Ace Hardware

hi lou manfredini aces home expert and in this video we're going to show you how to caulk a tub or shower and get great looking results [Music] when it comes to re-caulking a tub just like a good paint job preparation is everything in an earlier video i describe how to remove the old caulking you can see here in this joint we've got a nice clean joint there's actually a depression where the caulking can go inside there but in order to get really professional results one of the tricks is to use painters tape as your guide now i'm going to take some blue painters tape and i'm going to place it right on top of the tub here about you know roughly about an eighth to a quarter of an inch away to create a straight line this is going to help you get professional results and you're going to do this not only on the tub portion but you're going to do it on the wall as well and you're going to basically create well i guess the best way to describe it would be like a raceway for your new caulking to go in there and so you're going to take that tape and you're going to hold it just above that joint area so that when you go to fill this in with the caulking and you remove the caulk you get a real straight line okay with the taping done you see that we've created a track now to insert and apply the caulking there's a bunch of different caulking products on the market you want to use something that is designed for bathrooms a tub and tile caulking that will stick that's sort of an adhesive caulk but with a latex caulk it's a little bit easier to tool with your finger it's a good idea to keep a wet rag and i'll explain why in just a second so now that we've created that you want to start with the caulking in a corner and you want to start applying it you don't want to over apply but you just want to start squeezing that in and watch what you're doing to fill that area with the caulking so that it spills a little bit onto the tape that you just applied and you want to just work in small sections so once that's applied pull that caulk gun away and with your finger a little bit wet from that rag you want to take your finger and kind of pull that across to work that in and any excess there on your finger you're going to wipe on to the wet rag and then continue to pull that across so you get a nice smooth finish and you're going to work your way around the entire perimeter of the tub you want to keep even pressure on the trigger and when you have to release the trigger to get more caulking stop release and then just pick up again okay once the caulking is done and you're satisfied that you get it nice and smooth now it's time to remove the tape you want to be very careful with this and you want to do this while the caulking is still wet if you wait too long you may tear it out of what you just placed it into that joint between the in this case the tub and the shower wall so you want to start at one end and on an angle pulling away you want to carefully pull the tape and you see you get that really nice crisp line to give you those professional looking results and that's it if you need more information go to ace hardware dot com and please subscribe to our youtube channel where we have more helpful videos better yet go to your local ace hardware store because remember ace is the helpful place
