E01 | The Big Lap - Weigh in, Ghost Towns and Big Rocks!

so in this episode we leave our home town of perth and we wake our way to our first campsite called wooben rocks just outside of wooben then we make our way to our next campsite lake nylon just outside of queue and finally the episode will finish with us camping on the gas queen river [Music] so we're off we've just finished packing the last of the stuff uh we filled up the the car with diesel we're gonna be tracking how much diesel we we have we use so we can give you an idea of economy and highest and lowest price we've paid and all that kind of good stuff basically want to give you an idea of how much it's cost us to do a lap so you can work it out for yourself we're just on our way to um uh public way bridge and we're gonna weigh the car and weigh the trailer because this is gonna be the heaviest it's ever gonna be so if it's overweight we have to go back home oh yeah yeah this doesn't make a lot of sense to me she said if you need if he needs explaining just give me a call and i'll go through it yeah all right let's have a look oh all right let's fly up somewhere why aren't we over i think so so our group needs to go through the paperwork so our gross is 5.9 tonnes so we're like 50 kilos under our combined mass so just um our car is 3.38 and we're allowed 3.45 but once you've got the tow ball on a 3.62 you're only allowed 3.45 so the van's only 2.52 so we've got 500 kilo more we can put in the van so together we're fine yeah but we need more in the van less in the car yeah so we need to get rid of 120 kilos from the car and stick it in the van [Music] so first night we're um at a place called woven rocks which is about probably 280 k's yeah you can get your toys out chloe 280 k's north east to perth just a little free camp no one else here pretty level sites heaps of wood around and it's going to be like 10 degrees tonight so we'll have a fire should be good something early in the arvo pretty uneventful drive van towed really well um yeah they aren't gas struts so they weigh um i feel like they weigh nothing it's quite good i've got all these pins back right hello buddy you found your toys already you found your toys already oh my god awesome look at all the mess you've made in here um i probably just broke it because you put it in the floor leaves dirty foot marks on the bed we've got to find a better way to know first cam source of ripper keeps the dead wood around so we'll have a little fire tonight and um big flat open space out there and a bit of a natural sort of nammer hole or a waterhole and i reckon we'll see some kangaroos in there tonight it's on dusk i'll take chloe down there and we'll have a look but for now first beer of the trip and uh chloe's riding a bike round i'm gonna go for a little bit of a walk the child doesn't want to ride anymore the pack mule takes it yeah yeah yep so as you have seen at the way bridge were a little bit overweight in the car despite having the gvm upgrade gcm was okay but i had to get some weight out the back of the car so what we end up doing we're stripping out a heap of the um service items and uh like heavier tools uh like and double ups and stuff like that that i had and that's gone into the van um and cartons are full cartons of beer and cartons of pepsi max um and that kind of stuff's gonna go in the van and then we're gonna we've replaced a lot of heavier stuff that was in the car with a lot of stuff that was in the van so solid hoses and water hoses and stuff like that empty bucket their swim gear snorkeling gear that kind of stuff the chairs can stay in the car because they're all bulky but light and all the heavy stuff's gone into the car the pantry is already crazy heavy so we've sort of matched it on this side it's probably a good thing anyway just sort of even the weight out a bit so yeah the rest of the tools i've just got a skeleton set of tools in the car now throw net extra cans and this is all heavy stuff in here grinders and drills and spare bolts and oil and spare air compressor carton of beer service items big heavy mallets that kind of crap all the heavy stuff's gone into these drawers now so that's helped us strip a heap of weight the other thing we might do is um i've got two spares on the car i'm gonna confirm to see if the um rims on the van fit the car and if they do i might send one of my spares back to perth with my father-in-law when i get up to ex-mouth because i'll still have one spare for the car and there's two spares on the back of the vans when a pinch i could use one of the spares off the van so yeah you just got to be aware of all this stuff don't you know there's so many people that are cruising around overweight and they don't even know it or they don't care um but uh you're paying insurance for a reason you know and what's the point of spending all that money on insurance and when you actually go to need it they say that sorry but you're overweight we're not covering you oh and one other thing in the car i've got an 80 liter water tank underneath 200 liters in the van 80 liters in the car we're going to see how we go living off the 200 in the van and i might empty that 80 liters in the car and leave it empty um other than for like really remote trips where we don't think we're going to be able to get any water so see how we go with that you ready for your breakfast you dressed yourself you're beautiful ready for your breakfast you can eat inside where it's nice and warm outside inside ew what have you just noticed in the freezer it's so choppers um all the stuff at the top is not frozen properly but whatever no circulation we'll get through it we just emptied the fridge and freezer at home into there so we've got way more food than we actually need probably got i don't know you reckon we've got like three or four weeks worth of food yeah so we just got to get through it and then we'll have a more sensible amount yes it's cold this morning oh freezing seven degrees today diesel heater was on all night mom job [Music] big bell what this is this is called big bell yeah so this is the old is it the bell town of belgium i think big bell big bell town site it's an old abandoned town site just outside of queue it's um from the 1930s it was an old gold mine uh camp and then when the gold ran out everyone left so there's only a few buildings still standing this looks like the old church suitably creepy like all churches can i say that quite an eerie place the wind's knocking all the bits of sheet metal and stuff and making creaking noises i don't know about the rest of the country but in wa we call these these abandoned townships you call them ghost towns [Music] [Music] [Music] where are we um welga rock so what is it it's the the second largest monolith rock in australia second to order it's half the size of uluru apparently monolith meaning one rock so mount augustus i thought that was the biggest no so apparently that is a monocline rock and the difference means more than one rock or something there you go fun facts with tiff um should there's aboriginal paintings and stuff around this and i think you can climb it you're still allowed to climb this one so that's pretty cool i don't know if we're in the right spot because it's a big old rock wow there's heaps began you prince steph um rock and found another little campsite um 40 minutes from there so this is another wiki camps one right on the edge of this lake it's only about 150 200 meters off the highway so a little bit of highway noise but yeah another good little free camp just making bracelets yeah we had a big day today we've been on the road since nine yeah and it's like 4 30 now we've seen a few things we've only done 400 k's or something no way more dragon oh because we drove in and out all those sights yeah big day chloe was wicked in the car so good yeah so she had a little bit of sleep just now so every time she was good in the car we said she could have a special treat so she had about five special treats today so we're gonna have we're gonna have a diabetes baby so we did about 150 k's of corrugations and dirt roads today and the van got covered in dust but none of it looks like it's gotten past any of the seals anywhere that i've seen so far double seals on the doors outside and inside so we've had a bit of heavy rain and quite a lot of dust and we haven't had any come through yet can't say the same about the canopy the cheap canopy buddy likes a heber dust these dust seals do nothing you can keep adjusting the latches i've done it they're just crap i think it's time when i get back on this trip and get a new canopy and retire this one just hasn't fared very well because it cracks everywhere in the welds it's been like this for ages it doesn't seem to be getting any worse but um not good every weld is pretty much cracked little hairline cracks through there every world just rattled the bits but you get that dad's doing dinner i'm gonna do tiffany some wraps with uh salad i've got some fish on the stove over there i like crunchy and cupid tiff loves the perennials so that's cooking over here on the stove and mummy is doing chloe's dinner but she's not eating it's going really well what's your habit what do you got spaghetti spaghetti is it yummy um oh good must be good oh awesome and then that's us for the night i reckon you can't have campfires here you're not allowed to it's a 48 hour stay not a hell of a lot of wood around anyway you can see other people have been having fires but we'll do the right thing so we'll have tea and then um shower chloe have a shower ourselves then put her to bed what are you laughing at right what do you just do what'd you do a big fatty it's not on daddy's side of the bed daddy's side ah gross a bit of cheese bit of fish bit of crunchy cupid and some green stuff that is dinner there we go yum so we're just emptying our dump what do we call it our toilet for the first time in one of these dump points let's hope we get this wrong so you don't wear poop so let's see how we go we've actually got no idea how to tell when this is full but it feels heavy so oh this thing's full is that right oh nearly lost that what is that i don't know anyway you don't need to see that on video because it's um not a very nice sight so this is youtubing on the road we're sitting at the dump point flirty ice cream mama chloe wants an ice cream can scheduling a youtube video we're heading to mount augustus now so we're taking the road from mika farah to man augustus it's about was about 400 case yeah i think so of dirt road and we don't think there's any reception out there so we'll probably be out of reception for the next five or six days which is why we're scheduling a post oh by the way we cracked 10 000 subscribers on um youtube so you're all a bunch of legends we never thought we'd get that that big not that it's big but it's just bigger than we thought we'd be for a couple of amateurs so thanks guys she's got her headphones on but the music's on loud so we're just passing through a maker to get some fuel fill up the water tanks and empty the black water which is the first time we've ever done that and that's not too bad actually i thought it's gonna be pretty gross um this is where we're just filling up some water here on the side of the road and this is one of the old kingsford smith mail run uh delivery cars this is a mail truck back in the day 1920s so this next section of the road we're on is the old mail route so it's a 2000 k round trip longest um mail run in the world i reckon 2000k round trip from maker through to carnarvon on the roadway going on now through to mount augustus and then back round to marble bar so take about 10 days and they were doing this year round across like raging rivers and stuff it's pretty cool so we'll see a bit of that history on the way what you doing now [Music] so what's just happened well chloe's gone to loo and they've tried to wash tiff and chloe tried to wash their hands afterwards and the water pump wouldn't stop cycling and we couldn't figure out why and i thought it must be an air lock so i kept running some taps waiting for it to stop water pump's still running still running but all the taps were off i couldn't figure out why then i thought the only other tap i haven't checked is the one in the kitchen we had this dish drying thing which i'm about to throw on the bin wedged in there and it's knocked the tap up like that and while the pump was on it's filled this entire thing while it's in the caravan and i pulled it out the last second before it spilled out and filled the floor of the van so um wouldn't have been an issue once the pump was off because we turned the pumps off while we're driving anyway but this whole thing was full while i was trying to figure out why why the pump was still running so as we drove that would have just sloshed out and filled up the floor of the van so yeah there you go don't put anything in here that can bounce up and turn these taps on lesson light we've had a few incidents like this um we're just getting used to things it's brand new vans rookies we're rookies we're learning so now that we've lost all that water we've got to refill the water tanks i think they're roofing right up there oh yeah can you see the two animals on the road what are they kangaroos yeah just pulled up for a spot of lunch just um chloe started saying she was starving and we happened to stumble across the murchison river crossing and there's heaps of water in there so this would be a rook a little spot for lunch tiff's all concerned because he thinks we can't get out of here have a look at this i think we can get through that yeah as long as you go that way and not this way over to the bloody bridge yeah you're right you can direct me you're great at directions all right getting lunch ready oh yeah buddy oh [Music] battle i was having a look at this chloe no we're not camping here we're just having a look oh you can camp here [Music] cool okay so another little free camp tonight wiki camps again with the goods this is gascoigne river we just passed the gascoigne junction turn off um a little riverside camp heaps of dead wood again little firing there i'll use gas gascoigne river is pretty much dry except for a little bit up here am i paying the camera crew enough okay update on the soap dispenser we just got into camp where are you where are we day three um 200 ks of gravel and it is fallen off the wall into the sink um and we even put extra silicon um was it bathroom grade silicon on the back of it as well so not a good solution if you're going to do corrugations so that soap dispenser wasn't fusion lock brand but the fusion lock stuff's all held up fine so far it's all still hanging on the walls i wouldn't normally make a fire so big um normally it's just enough just to heat for us which you don't need that much wood for but i put a heap of little sticks on that so it burns down quick because i'll cook on that in the next half hour or so what are we making because he's having pancakes for breakfast yeah we've only got 100ks to do today to found augustus and i think you probably can't check in until 10 or 11 o'clock because it's the caravan park so she's gonna have a bit of a play around here we're gonna have an explore and she's gonna have some pancakes for breakfast looks making a mess oh that's all right what are we having for breakfast chloe pancakes do you like pancakes yeah i like pancakes snacks coffee mummy and daddy how's she getting on in there yummy you'll be able to finish it or was it too much wow okay we didn't really bring a lot of um the jumpers weather stuff so we're hoping to um although chloe would tell you otherwise look where she's dressed this way bub so yeah this is all the gas green river that we're camped on it's dry at the moment there's a little bit of pool of water down here i was going to show chloe but um lots of people on wiki camp say that um at this spot you can see the cows having a bath in the morning but since there's no water there's no bath charles kingford smith that i was talking about earlier that did this male run through here in the early 1900s 2000 k's hard country no roads camel drawn carts pretty hardcore and even after that like the first early set of trucks were pretty unreliable like the one you saw chloe playing in yesterday and they weren't too game on crossing this river when it was flowing really high they'd have a drum on a cable so they'd get a 44 gallon drum full of all the parcels and mail and stuff and they'd run a cable through it with a pulley system a big metal cable and when the river was flowing there'd be a bloke on the other side and they'd fill that drum full of mail and send it across the top of the river [Applause] pretty clever a bit easier now there's a buddy bitchmanish road across this little crossing all right honestly you're gonna end up cutting all of this because it's so boring [Music] you
