Finally I finished the project that I first posted as an animation of my PCB design. The video above gives you an overview of what the device can do, how it works and what hardware is used. More details, including detailed instructions and the code can be found in my blog at there.oughta.be/a/macro-keyboard.
A quick overview: The device is based on a Pro Micro, which registers as a USB keyboard and mouse as well as a serial interface. Through the serial interface the key assignments can be changed on the fly - for example if a different application is in focus. The e-ink screen is then used to show the current key assignments. And there are LEDs. Everything is better with LEDs.
Wow this is an amazing use of an E-Paper display. I've been trying to think of some project that integrates one for a while, Saving this on youtube and may end up building one at sompoint.
P.S That 3d animation of the assembly @~7mins was incredible. I think this would make a great post on the hackaday blog too
For how long have you been working on this project? It seems to be very detailed and refined, not to mention how much work it must be to document everything.

Dude, I was looking for this exact kind of thing years ago when I started writing custom macros! This is awesome and the e-ink display is definitely a nice touch!

This is fantastic. I'm a huge sucker for e-ink, and this does it great justice.
Out of diffusion curiosity, how thick is your wheel & is it 100% infill? It makes those LEDs shine! (sorry not sorry)
