defenses in dave cutcliffe era there and it really starts with matteo duran he's been fantastic at running back and then there'll be guys around him in the receiving court jake bobo jalen calhoun both big-time players for this duke offense it's gonna be interesting to see how the young quarterback is able to handle this type of situation this type of atmosphere because i'll tell you what rain stadium is rocking it is rocking today we wondered how many people would be out here cold blustery day windy no they're here tom eats leather and we're underway inside lane stadium keyshawn king is going to let this charlie am kicked over his head out of the back of the end zone for a touchback so we'll get to see this virginia tech offense and it's braxton burmeister who was shaken up in the last game he's actually been banged up for much of the season had to exit last week mark was not able to come in it's really a pain tolerance with him he couldn't do it so knox kadum had to take him the rest of the way last week but we get burmeister back yeah burmeister's barely been about past five weeks coach fuente said that it's just one play away from him having to come out of the game good to see him back starting on the field today burmeister will fake the run he'll look to throw down field going for it all and had a receiver out there but trey turner just couldn't bring it in well you mentioned turner right in the open they wanted to take a shot right away yeah it's really good throw by braxton burmeister he has had tennessee to just not be able to put the ball out there enough he put this one out there trey turner just unable to come down with it those are the types of plays that trey can make and needs to make a big miss on the first play of the game jalen alexander including cover second down and ten now for virginia tech that's thomas the true freshman malachi thomas puts his head down and gets a couple of yards before gary smith the third was able to bring him down yeah malachi thomas he's really come on as of late kind of in the garbage duty of the pit game first started seeing some action and coach puente said you know what i like this guy he he really saw it maybe i should have got him in earlier in the season but now he's in he's starting for them he's a really good north south runner compliment raheem blackshire out of the backfield third down and eight on the hokies first possession time looking for turner and he had him and he still has him in the air but turner was able to come down with it inside of duke i mean territory focus and concentration by trey turner we talked about it he is the offense now first pass to him he missed this one looked like he was going to miss it but watch this concentration as he's falling to the ground just able to locate the football and pull it in and that's that's what you see from this virginia tech offense you see a couple runs some short passes then deep balls to trade turn [Applause] fake to thomas burmeister now he'll look to run gets about three yards [Music] good job defensively by duke getting good hands on the wide receivers again that was another slam route intended for trey turner we got a jam at the line of scrimmage and now there's a duke defender down in the secondary remember the secondary holding his hit can't quite get a number on it looking to see if we can get a name on that one what a good like just snapshot of what we're going to see this entire game from virginia tech offensively and there's a lot going to be lots of opportunities for these wide receivers to make acrobatic catches because burmeister he'll just he'll just put him up put it up there see he's one-on-one coverage he's gonna throw it let his guys try to come down with it that's dave thompson for the safeties nate thompson shaken up on the play he'll walk off under his own power so that's good news this is a secondary for duke that actually has some good depth last year they had to have some guys fill in with josh blackwell hurt jeremiah lewis got some good playing time leonard johnson also did so we'll see who comes out to replace nate thompson when we come back [Music] it can be easy to turner [Applause] picks up three before josh blackwell brings him down nice play by blackwell staying home you know what it's senior day here how about this young man right here terrell smith number 79 actually got to wear the number 25 frank beamer jersey today but he can't wear what he's playing he's a seventh year senior three-time captain and he's making his first career start today at right tackle yeah it just shows how how much this team appreciates him and just relies on his leadership and three-time captain having not started at all just it's just really good job and really good block again that play on the quarterback draw invited the defensive end up field got a good block on him opened up a running lane for burmeister but you know anytime you have a guy who is maybe not the most talented player but just a such a good leader it's really important to recognize that leadership ability and i think justin puente really solid move of having him come out here start this game for virginia tech we'll see how much he does play in this game but big honor for him and definitely deserve peter moore's punt he's gonna be down at the five yard line nice job on special teams by the hokies as you might expect with the tradition here jalen strowman who's been a great special teams player for this year down in the ball inside the five so virginia tech after the nice play to trey turner that got the ball into duke territory stifled near midfield and having the punt but at the very least their defense goes on the field right now with duke backed up in the shadow of their own goal post and maybe not the best spot for a true freshman to get his first series as a starter that's what we're going to see from riley leonard yeah and you know he's seen action again he came in the second quarter verse pit you talk about places you don't want to have your first time pitt would be one probably number two would be down towards the student section in lane stadium no question about it he's got mateo durant who's going to be a lead blocker on this play but he shows that athleticism getting outside he's close to a first down thorian strong ran him out of bounds but riley leonard is a heck of an athlete and coach cutler said look he's big too he's bigger than he looks when you get up close to him and he kind of showed that athleticism there's coach cut yeah he encouraged us to get down the field before the game and check out number 10. he was right i mean he's tall he's listed at 6-4 205 but he was every bit of 6'4 and probably 215. durant will carry it on second down and one dax hollyfield is there to bring him down but that's going to move the chains you know coach cutcliffe you know he has had the honor of just coaching so many really good quarterbacks in his career obviously the manning brothers are two of the most notable ones daniel jones but he talks about riley leonard he said yo we just love this guy he's like a throwback kid kind of old school eats breathed sleeps football and he's ready for the situation bobo on the receiving end still on his feet so virginia tech brought pressure and leonard was did a nice job of picking it up and finding bobo's leading receiver gunner homebook was also really good first pressure one of the top passers in the acc when he was under pressure that's a part of this style of offense you locate matchups you locate breeds but if you see pressure that kind of trumps your natural reed progression and you go try to crisp replace the pressure with the football he did on that play to bobo and this offense it just it looks the same it's a very similar game plan very similar style as we would see if gunner homburger's in now empty backfield mateo duran split at the top of your screen again virginia tech shows pressure they roll the pocket it's a receiver that's jail calhoun who makes the catch and they'll move the chains again so this true freshman riley leonard who had to come in last week in relief of gunner holmberg so he got his feet wet last week but now making his first start at lane stadium off to a good start here on his first drive yeah you see him trying to catch his breath anytime anytime you're out in the real field you know especially that first series your mouth gets dry you can't spit the words out correctly how about this one now he'll look to throw and has his tied in by weedy wide open inside the 30 down at the 25. wow i'll tell you what cut cliff might be old school old coach but he is definitely not old school when it comes to play calling and real really good trickeration leonard got hurt hit there he took a shot but again you see him make a really good pass to marweedy for a big game [Applause] into the teeth of that defense picks up four what's at the end of this play watch number 10. bam takes a big shot from the front jordan williams got him first and then a guy behind before we do you see the tight end there no big shoes to fill no gray obviously though all everything tight end last year for duke on the outside nice job tracking him down dax hollow dukes right now they get down towards this 20-yard you know third down right now but it's more so they just have really struggled when they've gotten the ball in the red zone they are 14th last in the acc in terms of converting red zone opportunities into points about seven here would have an opportunity to do that again rolling the pocket letter to trouble he just has to throw it away taiwan garbett was there applying the pressure forcing the freshman to just chuck it into the stands as you watch the entire season just the games how they progressed for duke you get really impressed by how they're able to move the football down the field they just aren't able to convert third downs into first downs within the red zone and then aren't able to drive the ball and put it in the end zone for touchdowns had to settle for field goals too many times yeah a 39-yard attempt here from charlie and it was a pretty darn good kick but the wind as you can see the flags on top of the goal post swirling around and it may have impacted that kick as ham clangs it off the upright and we're still scoreless you saw that ball move left right left right then finally hit that boast and i'll tell you what that virginia tech sideline and justin hamilton are fired up defense went out there helped duke after some big plays settled for zero points they get the ball when we come back [Music] on my travels across the country i came across this house with water dripping from the ceiling mention of him in his seventh year one of just eight players currently playing in their seventh year at one institution he's working on his second master's degree congratulations to all the student athletes and their families for just a job well done here at virginia tech that's black sheer on the carry young man transferred in a couple of years ago from rutgers great dual threat guy pass catcher out of the backfield against having his best just in terms of being a sheer just pure runner no i think you're right you know he came in with khalil herbert who transferred in from kansas and herbert really gained the lion's share of the carries last year and he was fantastic uh you know obviously he's doing things in the nfl right now what a catch on the outside of doing things yeah by tavion robinson kind of the other guy the the you know the two t's trey turner and tavion robinson see robinson with this little slot go route and an inside fade good catch but you know raheem blackshear he was really a pass catching running back last year and they have focused him more on running the football being a pure running back had really good games so far this year look at that getting to the second level blackshear looks seems like he's a little bit of a bigger player too he added a few lbs of muscle in the offseason to handle a bigger load and moving the sticks again another first down for virginia tech yeah the addition of malachi thomas into the backfield over the last couple games has really helped blackshear because he hasn't had to carry every single ball every all the load in terms of the run game so he's fresher when he does get opportunities now the tight end that's gallow full head of steam down to the 20. [Applause] braxton burmeister is really getting this team going and mixing it up running the football passing the football hokies look good now in the red zone yeah chris you're right in that first series when they had the football it was just there's a lot of let's throw the ball up there and see what the wide receivers could do now they've started to get into more of the boot game the run game and again that's when this offense is the most efficient maybe not the biggest play threat but most efficient last year all kinds of room to run inside the 10 inside the 5 and he'll slower wow great running and even better blocking on the outside but what what a run i mean that's exactly what you want to see you get the first series malachi thomas a couple straight ahead runs then you get the boot the big play on the outside to deon robinson and then let's hand the ball off to number five again found the end zone great run almost not even touched walking into the end zone senior john parker romo for the try and it is good right in the student section there at lane stadium they've been here for about two hours her second offensive possession of the day six plays 79 yards just a tick under two minutes and it's seven to nothing here on senior day jalen stinson back to receive this john parker romo kick [Applause] stinson's gonna let it smartly go out of bounds time for food lines food for thought mark two and i talked in the open about how virginia tech has struggled sometimes offensively especially last week without trey turner but defensively they've had their issues too yeah they have and it really it comes down to tackling they just have not tackled very well and it's progressively gotten worse as the season goes along really in the last you see that last five games 11.6 missed tackles per game and last week first boston college had their season high at 15. so part of this defense is yes you need to know what you need to do but you need to be in the right place and execute and then tackling it's been too much of just throwing your shoulder at guys and not wrapping up see if they can fix that today durant fixed on that play nowhere to go jordan williams along with taiwan garland just joining in and not letting duran go anywhere well that's wrapping up he wrapped his whole body up and put him on his back in the backfield for riley leonard this true freshman quarterback man his first career start today for duke you see him calling the adjustments he knows his style big part of this offense just for bobo nice catch we'll just snag that one right out of the air and pick up the first down and jabari connor thought he had an interception on that play you teach defensive backs and linebackers that once that ball is thrown you take your eyes to the receiver because if you don't you don't make the interception he's gonna you're gonna miss the tackle and that's what happened with connor and connor is one of those guys that they talked about look he's been really leading tackle last year just hasn't wrapped up in terms of his tackling as much this year [Applause] but you also see the hands in the concentration by jake bobo that was he just snagged that one right away yards you mentioned the athlete that riley leonard is he was an unbelievable basketball player now people tell us the story about this in high school coming out of fair hope alabama that's down deep south near mobile alabama area where they play some great high school football but why don't we show you what he did as a basketball player i feel like yeah i'm sure he was a good basketball player trying to get to the outside and will not he's going to lose a couple of yards as he hits the water cooler but look what he did in high school [Music] i mean like his head is at the rim is that an eight-foot look at that look at that the w now here comes the coup de gras right here 360. look at this guy in the stands up here oh yeah and he he comes by that you know he hits in his bloodlines too his dad chad he was a basketball player at the citadel and so you know i'm sure there's a lot of evenings afternoon spent out the driveway shooting duncan look at the basketball that's when you're like yeah i'm sure it was good oh my gosh he is a really good basketball player now third down though trying to convert here pressure looking to throw head up he'll have to do it himself and he can't get there ellen tisdale forces him out of bounds at midfield here duke is going to be forced to puck fourth at five [Music] good job jake's getting outside the pocket by leonard you're part of the part of the issue with this offense this year whether it's gunner holberg back there or riley leonard is when they the quarterbacks do scramble when they get outside the pocket the the scramble drill they call it for the wide receivers has not been very effective usually you want a guy on the sideline and the guy going deep that time jake bobo had the opportunity to go deep just didn't go there and thunder had to run out of bounds fair catch made by tavion robinson one of the top 100 men in the country hey don't forget our acc primetime matchup presented by geico it's tonight this is a good one mark nc state and wake forest we saw up close and personal last weekend sea state defensively what they did in tallahassee and you'll see that offense that's really been unstoppable all year long for wake forest strength against strength here yeah if both teams are playing really well in what they do wake forest offense they've combined this unusual style of offense with really really good talent and that's why you see the points per game so high nc state on the other hand they're playing hard-nosed physical defense it's gonna be a really fun game to watch blackshear all kinds of room again 30 40. can you get a block on the outside just missed it but the quan johnson had to bring him out that was a huge run by blackshear raheem blackshear good job of turning and cutting up and really good job by lucida smith number 54 of getting up on the linebackers and just the last two runs that he's had almost no one has touched him and this is what this offensive line can do when they're clicking yards on the ground two big runs they're going to add to it here and has all kinds of room again inside the 30. these are huge chunk plays and they're pulling the backside guard and the backside tackle and you see the the linebacker 35 is just unable to get over the top that's dorian myuci is unable to see the pullers and by the time he makes it over there black shearer just has a head of steam unable to tackle that brought down black sheer again this time he finds his sledding a little bit tougher still picks up about a yard and right about now is when the emergence of malachi thomas takes effect right the fact that they have another back to come in to spell blackshear where he doesn't have to run the ball tight i mean you see what he can do when he's fresh going out there on the ground game and now you bring in malachi thomas who's kind of a more vertical north south runner they can pick up yards just the same way watching the slot at the top number 11. it's usually lined up on the outside but this is where that inside fade route could occur tapping his head give me the ball it to thomas he's got nowhere to go wrapped up brought down by dwayne carter team in the backfield dropping malachi thomas for a loss out of pinkerton ohio he says that his dad texts him before every single game and just says control what you can control your effort your attitude and your toughness it's kind of nice having a dad that can remind you those types of things every now and then because that that's the truth third down to 12 now burmeister the throw duke brings some pressure and it's picked up ball's just too low to handle jalen jones was out there true freshman wide out he had some space too these are the types of things that burmeister has got to get better at you see it every single game there's a couple passes whether it's on the deep ball or on the out route when he feels like he needs to add touch to his pass sometimes he loses velocity and you can get the ball out there and put a little bit more air under it to give it that touch and that easy reception but that was a miss by burmeister in that last throw 47-yard attempt here from john parker romo he has the leg there's a swirling wind down there let's see if this impacts if you saw how it impacted duke's ham had the distance but nowhere near the accuracy and both kickers struggling a little bit with the swirling wind inside of lane stadium today i'm not sure how much the wind affected that one or was just bad right off the bat yeah fuente said look john parker romo he's got i mean he's got a big leg they like him in the end of half in the game from like up to 58 yards 57 yards it's just about the accuracy you know if you get it in between the post it's good if you don't it's going to miss really far one way or the other good look at justin fuente there bundled up for the cold request [Applause] spot you see these types of games from matteo durango he leads the acc in the number of carries he has 210 coming in today and he has those three four five yard runs then he'll break a big one every now and then on his feet here churning for an extra yard or two about a yard shy of picking up the first down so it'll bring up third and one final seconds of this first quarter [Applause] i think he got enough for the first down he did but daley was right there to make sure he didn't get much more [Applause] and they'll move to chains as we move on to the second quarter a lot of action in this first quarter not a whole lot of scoring but that's sure to come from what we've seen already today hokies on top here in half seven to nothing stop these fans from coming out they really support their hokies and i wouldn't say a full house but pretty close in terms of a boisterous crowd here at lane stadium as we start the second quarter first and ten for the blue devils [Applause] leonard has time now it collapses and he goes down hollifield got there he gives us a little sack dance afterward coach fuentes says he's going to be a wwe superstar someday oh man look at number four right in the middle of the screen i'm a little delayed blitz so he has the running back in man coverage and once durant goes to block he fills around great job on the pressure because jake bobo was about to come open on a deep out route and brings up second and 19 and you saw he's the energy of this defense you saw that energy right after that sound second down and long lennard's just trying to do something with his legs and ollie field is again there on the stop again jalen johnson down on the side what do you got for jail you guys have seen that gunner homework is down here on the sideline for duke and he's been communicating with riley a lot as he's been coming off the field riley said that gunner's one of the best mentors that he could have coming into this situation he said he takes everything he says to heart and is really thankful for having him along the ride for this thanks jaylen holberg is available today if needed hurt his shoulder last week he's been practicing this week but just wasn't able to go at the start now low snap gets it to durant that's a nice play has a blocker on the outside and just tripped up the people's got just enough of matteo durant to prevent him from picking up the first down now it's gonna be third down they'll mark it the long three fourth down rather in a long streak fourth down along three and this the is staying on the field right now for duke and you got to imagine we're going to try to draw them offside so if you're virginia tech defensively you cannot jump offsides and give them a free down if they do decide to go for it matteo de rance viable option on the back field if virginia tech decides to bring pressure takes a snap [Applause] how about that in terms of confidence for your true freshman quarterback though putting in his hands to convert this fourth down yeah i think there's a lot of confidence in leonard and he got a little bit hit at the end of it it looks like daryl harding the intended receiver maybe was supposed to come underneath the defensive back but cutcliff not abused [Music] there's leonard trying to complete his case in terms of what's going on and it's just you know it's a tough position to put him in and quite honestly in this part of the game where you are in the field i don't think a punt would be that big of an issue unless you feel like the wind would affect it too much he's got two receivers open too that's king inside the five inside the 10 and he'll score keyshawn king's first touchdown of the year and that props a big celebration as the hokies increase their advantage just disappeared this year for virginia tech but what a way to come back there's only one catch of the season for five yards but great wheel route out of the backfield went right past the safety of lumi young wide open burmeister hit him sudden change fuente says let's go for it let's put in king the speedster and you mentioned it mark just a second catching the year and it's a big one once right by the safety and finds paydirt all hokies here at lane stadium early 14-0 our mindies are proud supporters of college football best combo ever kind of like the combination of the fans here at lane stadium and popular music ah yes good transition i do like that i'll tell you what these fans they know the words every single song has been played and they're dancing to every single song i love it big party during our commercial breaks let's take a look at that play so we're in cover three so cover three means lemmy young needs to rotate down he has the number two receiver that becomes the back going vertical you need to run with that vertical route in in the motion that was done by trey turner early in the play it just confused lumi young he got his eyes wrong and then way too far away he tried to recover great job by burmeister understanding it putting the ball and hitting his receiver in stride that's again if you throw that behind or you throw that too far out in front that's a no-go that one that was a go-go into the end zone you see king there warming up his hands he's like i'm just getting started [Applause] [Music] i think the last thing you want to do when you're facing a virginia tech defense is build their comments you want to continue to keep their eyes wrong and out of place but once they get honed in on what you're doing this is virginia tech's defense forever they are really really hard to go against standard design run along the right side and he just doesn't have anywhere to go [Applause] oral pollard comes out of there and says forget about it that's not going to work today and i understand wanting to mix in the qb run especially when you have an athlete like leonard in there however you do also have the second leading rusher in the acc in the backfield in mateo duran duran is out of the game jordan waters is in who's been dealing with some illness this week good to see him on the field third and nine let's see if virginia tech comes with pressure to show it they put something up the middle and they do initially picked up leonard over the top and cannot connect with his receiver now flags all over the place and the umpire dumped just make sure the umpire's all right on that plate too [Applause] automatic first down sounds like mike roach is coming to us you hear what the winds doing on the field you see on the outside eli pankle is getting in the middle of the field and yeah again chris you know i've talked about this with you a bunch correction number two number two having the umpire in the middle of the field behind like where the linebackers are it's just like why are you there get out of the freaking way like it really is a pet peeve it's one of the number one things that bothers me it's out of control it's an out of control it hurts the offense having a guy there hurts the defense not being able to cover guys and no shade on mark wilson our umpire he is where he's supposed to be it's just he don't like them should be out of there right and you know in the nfl they moved him back behind just just the way college football is so a fresh set of downs for duke and at least on first down matteo duran will be very little about here josh on the stop it [Music] is usually backing up for kind of splitting time with mario kendricks kendricks is out for this game so josh fuga really getting a lot of playing time oh he got really impressed with what the defensive line has done so far limiting both quarterback run and matteo durant in the run game once again behind the chain second and tent look to throw pocket collapsing gets it out here to calhoun comes back to the ball and that's going to limit his gain it just gave me a couple of yards good job by tay daley is like the field safety position for virginia tech he's a guy that is really a good addition for this team this year transferred in for band dude 11 tackles for syracuse season high for him but he has been really good and really affected this game so far another third and long hokies bring just four drops calhoun the usually short-handed cal moon dropped out one and that may have gone for a first down instead it's time to punt again i cannot you can't drop those balls tough you know calhoun what makes him so good as a slot receiver is the fact that he is so good at catching the ball in traffic and coming back to the football that was a rare miss well thrown football and now duke's gonna have to give the ball back by the way always dangerous damian robinson meets the acc fourth in the country in the 13 and a half return average whistles and a flag before we even get started offense number 16 five yard field two fourth down yards and he'll try and kick it again and this will be you know porter wilson's gonna have to punt this one into the wind we saw that last kickoff go out of bounds the wind affected that and so see what porter wilson does [Applause] almost their encroachment attack [Applause] low kick here won't be that initial pressure you see the good job getting his hands up and then obama johnny on the spot coming up with the interception that's back-to-back big plays for rj oven he had a strip sack last week this week comes away with the interception i've gotten to know this young man very well over the years his dad former new york giant player got to see rj at training camp but now he got a new quarterback in the game for duke it's jordan moore he's a run threat he's going to try and run it nowhere to go try to bounce it outside still can't find any room [Applause] to bring him down jordan moore also has family members who are vets sister mom and dad no gain on the play though riley leonard now back in quarterback for duke blue that was he get a feeling mark okay this is a momentum shift but they got to capitalize on this yeah and i need to see number 21 get the ball in this drive he has to touch the football fake to him leonard will look to throw it i can't get anything going nicki dalmalan was the intended receiver out of the tight end spot market that that play just didn't look like it was space properly yeah it's hard anytime you get a right-handed quarterback moving fast to his left just it's just hard to put the touch necessary on pass with a guy so close and again it's the red zone issues for duke this year just haven't found the play calls that work correctly all the way towards the bottom of the screen that's big jake bobo looks like he's almost uncovered right now empty backfield with durant split to the top of your screen too third down and 10. leonard pressure coming he'll try and do it on his legs inside the five down to the three fumbles the football the hokies fell on it and it's their ball leonard was stretching for the extra yard to try and stand shopping hayward was there putting pressure on he's down a little bit too yeah remember now we've talked about this he's been banged up for over a month yeah and he's been playing through the pain last week he got hit he had to come out and he started warming up on the sideline trying to come back and he couldn't come back yeah and they got knox kadum the backup warming up on the sideline know that was interesting in terms of talking to coach whitney earlier the week he said and i quote thomas knows the value of picking up two yards yes yeah he he does and i think what coach fuente likes about him is that he doesn't dance around he makes a decision he finds a hole and he hits that hole and usually falls forward he's not gonna have those big explosive runs he's not the fastest like that smith walking off under his own power one of the things for virginia tech 2 this year is they just had such a stagnant offense i really have not been able to get anything going and the def it's affected the defense's confidence the defense has kind of felt okay well you know how long can we just hold on to this rope and not let this team go over the edge by ourselves this defense i've been watching him on the sideline as they're watching their offense march down the field and they are loving it and it's giving them some life and of course i say that right right as shaka hayward comes in and makes a dfl but that it's all a part of this team people talk all the time and coaches talk all the time about all three phases working together but it's the confidence level for this virginia tech defense to know that once we get there our stop our offense will go out on the field they'll sustain a drive and that's what they've been able to do right here on this drive tfl resulting in a three-yard loss second down and 13. coming in early in this drive all the way back inside their own 10. burmeister got hurt thomas now flags come down though in the backfield thomas with a nice gain coming back too let's check the markers holding offense number 69 10-yard penalty second down again on the call you see on the outside tenuta just that left arm getting around the half of this one here between duke and virginia tech miami and florida state renewing their rivalry last time i saw florida state was winning that game not sure where we are right now they'll tell you started this season off being a very productive receiver out of the backfield the past few weeks he hasn't really had many targets but you see how he is a threat and virginia tech is playing a lot of man-to-man coverage right now they're walked down there's not one defender deeper than 11 yards as they line up right now [Applause] ball it looked as it got to the line of scrimmage trying to find johntavious robertson yeah it was number four dax holifield has kind of got over that front line and he did a good job of just getting the shoulder pad on it looked like and into man it's like they're bringing pressure they are again otavius robertson who can't hook up with riley with this man-to-man because virginia tech is bringing pressure on those early downs i won't be surprised if they take a shot at some point they've had jared gardner their big 6-3 210 pound wide receiver man-to-man those last two plays now virginia tech will sit back in more of a zone trying to force riley leonard to make completion low snap and the hokies are coming with pressure leonard having to run out of there and couldn't hook up with his receiver dorian strong read it the whole way it knocked it away he wouldn't pick up the first down anyways over there on the sideline but it brings up fourth and ten and now the clock is stopped too with 211 to play and he'll have to punt it away there have been times this year where they've struggled with the snaps and that that was just a very bad snap by jack wallabaugh who is a good center for duke but it's all acc oh yeah all ac center but you can't bounce it off your own rear end dribble it to your quarterback just doesn't give him a shot on third down so robinson back to receive this kick good kick high forcing robinson to call fair catch that zone 14. he comes up to make the play but now virginia tech with just three seconds over two minutes to play in this first half and all three timeouts on the board mark put something together offensively yeah that looks like lemmy young who's hurt and we already had nate thompson the safety be injured earlier in the game so to keep an eye on that depth in the secondary for duke while the and the player can walk off under his own power and lemon young is doing just that braxton burmeister now back in for the hokies with 203 left to go in this first half all three timeouts on the board so virginia tech has plenty of time to put together another scoring drive here isaiah fisher smith now win at safety for duke you go right at him yeah i think you go right at it you know isaiah fisher smith he's third on the death chart in that kind of field safety position robinson on the end around flag down you can tell by caleb smith's reaction i think the official may have gotten him on the outside number 80. another holding call against the hogans look at it see on the outside oh and he he knew it he felt it was happening as it was happening he tried to get his hands off backed up from that defensive red spot to make the tackle it'll bring up third down and long that's the way he plays football nice guy you talk to him off the field but he steps across those white lines and ben albert the d-line coach has really gotten into his head and he plays with absolute fire and not only does he play with fire he plays with water and fire look at this guy rising out of the depths hulk eating snakes holding snakes finds a snake on that photo shoot holding that up got to try on the wrestling team here at duke yeah that's a position that i would never want to be in his walk-on song is walked by pantera of course he's wrestling of course it is firing up the team it's very hard for me to look at that and not think of the movie 300 we are sparta ben frye is the sparta of this duke defensive line reminiscent of your playing back to the game at days third down for burmeister now he has a lot of room to run he shows the speed too as he picks up the first down and more oh boy yeah no we do get a flag [Applause] isaiah that's isaiah fisher smith that's the fill in now for lumi young who was out and just couldn't hold up i didn't think it was that malicious though mark and it's really hard to tell that burmeister went out of bounds [Applause] let's take another look because that's it's my lack of commenting on that call is going to describe how i feel about that call yeah yeah he's out of bounds but that it's like not that's not a hit it's a nudge it's you know i've been running fast and now i'm stopping brooks in virginia tech's favorite now they're in duke territory with plenty time pressure coming bermeister just avoids it he's got all kinds of time trying to get it to turner but that was as much throwing it away as anything through the spot where only his guy could get it downfield either only his guy or the sideline is going to get it because it's a good good job just keeping it away another flag down the field out towards where trey turner initially lined up mike roach is going to lose his voice by he's speaking on almost every snap an eligible receiver downfield on the pass offense for 69 and number 55. don't be declined to be second down and that that takes place because braxton burmeister is such a run threat and part of this offense is when burmeister doesn't have his initial read he usually pulls down a run and these offensive linemen go downfield and block but it hurts them when there becomes a situation like that where he does stay in the pocket sometimes the offensive lineman get three four yards downfield and that becomes illegal second down and just 29 ticks on the clock but virginia tech has all three timeouts on the board burmeise for the throw has time well knocked away and falls harmlessly incomplete [Applause] josh blackwell was out there on coverage with the tip really good defense by josh blackwell and braxton burmeister he had a receiver that had an opportunity to catch that he's he's a little bit a little bit slow on getting the ball out of his hands i think he saw that recognized it just double clutched a little bit too long and allowed blackwell to get in position to knock the ball away third down and ten with robinson motion bottom of your screen blitz comes bermeister avoids it initially now we'll try and run it gets about six or seven will be tracked down by shotgun now it's fourth down clock winding down you have an injury on the field this is another virginia tech hokey and that might be let's see the smith again shaken up earlier was able to walk off the field it looked like at that point fuente was just going to let the clock roll out go into the half up 14. why don't you call timeout here and chuck it into the inside fourth down yeah your clock will run out by the time four seconds yeah you might as well and i think they're gonna have to call timeout with the injury on the field in order to stop the clock or they'll just take the runoff but see the smith he's been a big part of this offensive line for many years and he's a guy who's a leader on that o line the first time he looked like he was almost just winded he couldn't really keep going this time he's obviously in some pain walking off the field and right now that's what he's saying i'm going to take the time out so we don't have a runoff virginia tech has taken its first time out to avoid that runoff please reset the game clock to six seconds he'll start on the snap look we're just going to throw it downfield and just jump up and try to get it yeah there's not a lot of coaching that goes into this place here's the plan yeah except for what you do tell your offensive line is that once this ball is thrown up in the air spread out spread out because if there is a interception return you want to have guys who can make the tackle or at least slow down the return so that your running backs and receivers get back into the play yeah exactly wanted to see how virginia tech was lining up he calls a timeout just to make sure his defense is lined up as they should be pcc college football continues following us there you go winston-salem 7 30 tonight acc prime time it's all presented by you really watch him play and you look at his numbers he said man he's a really good player but sometimes you feel like okay it's the wide receivers on the outside and the mecca messi and devin carter they're thomas i mean but again you talk about the list of playmakers that they have on that offense i didn't even mention their running backs who have the ability to have these explosive games especially against a wake forest defense that i don't think they've stopped anymore all year bam in person there's two running backs now burmeister's gonna unload to the end zone he's got some receivers down there up in the air and it's caught but tackled harmlessly was tavion robinson at the three and time will wind down so it gave the fans here especially in that end zone a little something to be excited about but robinson immediately covered over by about four or five two blue devils and wasn't able to skirt through and find his way to the end zone and good thing that duke called timeout because when they lined up initially all their defenders along the 10-yard line now they put their heels back on the goal line you just see two there's something wrong with braxton burmeister because he's just not able to get enough on that throw to get it even into the end zone either way one way to finish the half i like when coaches do that little excitement exactly all for not as we have reached the half and virginia tech offensively and already 374 points just 17 points on the board though with that type of output yardage wise in the first half your hokie fan you may have hoped for more points but they are in control of this game jaylen johnson is to really stay in this football game they're gonna need to load up to stop this run and you see blackshear's number career day already just in the first half you see the 104 yards on the ground on only nine carries and burmeister just five of 11 in that first half with a pick but of those five completions they went for 162 yards duke will take over after the touchback on their own 25. jalen johnson is down on the field jalen i got to catch up with coach cutcliff and you guys were talking about how mateo duran did not get a lot of touches well coach said he's dealing with a lower leg injury and a left hand injury so he's hoping to get him back in the second half and then i asked what is he seeing from riley that he likes and he said well he has no protection he said we are not playing well he said we play better in practice so i'm ready to see that team come to this field today i appreciate that jail and leonard was sacked just one time in that first half but he was harried on a number of occasions you mentioned durant with the injury situation just two carries in that second quarter now back on the reception or a flat throw you just have to hold him in order to cover him knock the ball away oh restaurant gets hit hard jamari connor no problem tackling on that plate [Applause] from that nickel position really good job of timing up the blitz and because dax hollow field was coming on the inside jake mulready picked him up and no one but no one sergeant mark connor big set second down [Applause] [Music] talked about the lower leg injury at the hand injury he's been in he's been kind of the decoy on those last two plays trying to fake to him and then either throw the ball or run the ball and now he's lined up all the way at the bottom of the screen with jake bobo in the slot towards the bottom virginia tech looks like they're in cover too so anytime you get that you have to look for the middle of the field to possibly be open just four runners will try and run for it puts his head down and gets a good gain he will about the offensive line struggles wouldn't be surprised at some point if they start back directly getting out of that empty set start getting more towards let's get two tight ends on the field adding to the protection [Applause] the outside and runs out of bounds after a good return never easy replacing a legend justin fuente here at virginia tech after all those years under frank beamer got off to a really hot start too winning the coastal 10-win season his first year here last year just five and six 27 year bowl street snaps yeah i know that was a big kind of thorn in his side 27 years in a row going to bowl games then last year obviously it was a covid year they were affected by that dramatically had multiple games where 15 20 plus players were missing those football games including the game last year versus dude they've had a lot of turnover too a lot of guys have hit the transfer portal a lot of guys have left this team for whatever reason and justin puente he said he's had a tough time kind of putting stuff together this year and that 4-5 record that as a result of all those guys and the inexperience they've had thomas on first down talking about inexperience the true freshman hart county georgia lost two second down and 12. thomas again this time much better results he's going to pick up about 10. jalen alexander brings him down but just two yards shy moving first down blue devil down on the field [Music] another safety dupont johnson number 17. he was the guy left three to make that tackle in the last play inexperience showed it man this duke secondary they're getting banged up virginia tech is driving when we come back aflac policyholder virginia tech leading here on third down and short burmeister is going to try and do it on his own and he does first down shaken up in that first half and injury rib injury said it though he's talking to him at the break he's a tough kid he's showing it right now yeah he is tough and they've kind of gone back and forth whether okay when he is on the field how much do we want to run him because his legs are his best asset he's one of the fastest players on the team and so they want to incorporate that but they also want to protect him he's done a good job this half of getting out of bounds or just getting down instead of taking a hit robinson that's a really nice pass jalen stinson on the coverage another one of those safeties that's having to come in with all these injuries on the back end but this is a beautiful pitch this is the best throw that braxton burmeister has had in the past three weeks this ball gets out of his hands and gets the enough distance and enough touch to get outside to tavion robinson too many times that ball is either left short or is thrown too high and now burmeister goes on the outside as a lineup of wildcat on the wildcat stiff arms his way gets free and then leaps the defender and goes out of bounds after the gain of eight yards that's one of the prettiest eight car runs i think you'll ever see he's gotten to this a lot last year in terms of getting the quarterbacks on the outside and getting toward wildcat with the way raheem box here has been playing they're going to go for it again back to burmeister he'll look to thrill wide open caleb smith is going to reel this one in great combination of plays called by brad cornelson the offensive coordinator everything was lined up the exact same way in that wildcat pitch and so difficult especially we talked about the depletion in terms of injuries with this duke defensive backfield there was just no one anywhere near caleb smith easy walking touchdown [Applause] on the hole to get it down parker aroma with the p-a-t that's smith's first touchdown catch of the year and the hokies extend their lead 24-3 here in blacksburg [Music] hokie score in their first possession of the second half 24-3 mark last two plays of that last drive yeah talk about a master's class and setting up play watch the bottom of your screen that's caleb smith number 80. now this is the run play caleb smith kind of works that inside i'm gonna go block somebody and now run it back same formation watch caleb smith it's the exact same motion i'm gonna work in block somebody oh no i'm gonna go deep and that just completely threw off the defensive backs for duke and again as an offensive coordinator you want to try to set plays up very rarely can you do it back to back usually have to wait a quarter but great job on that play and great job on the connection from burmeister to caleb smith [Applause] [Music] can't afford to get another safety hurt [Music] he had a huge return last week jamari connor captain one of your best defensive players on special teams of course it's virginia tech it's beamer ball if you don't play kickoff or punt it's almost disrespectful frank beam was number 25 warned today by the way by tackle terrell smith seven-year player can't wear 25 when you're playing you got to put the 79 back up and now jalen coleman number 22 is at the top of the screen he's the running back in very fast player leonard has pressure up the middle he's going to go down alan tisdale got him [Applause] [Music] defensive coordinators have plans first and it's either we're gonna pressure or we're gonna drop in coverage right now without the threat of anything happening downfield and these routes are taking just too long to develop he's able to do both he's optioning a linebacker at that time it was tisdale he has the option to jam the tight end and then rush or just rush that time he got home got there too second down and long lennon's gonna run it let's put pick up on second down but he will once again leave duke in a third long situation far too often and they have not been very effective on third down just two for nine mark but it's been a lot of third and sevens and third eighths yeah great point i mean they haven't been very effective on bursting that's been the big problem without matteo duran in the game or effective in the game they just have not had anything going in the run game besides for riley leonard who is their again their backup quarterback hokies bring five leonard behind bobo [Applause] they were in sync early in the game things have just fallen apart for them offensively yeah it's the pressure that justin hamilton the defensive coordinator for virginia tech is bringing it's just it's starting to get in riley leonard's head that even if he is protected he feels that clock going off that hey man someone's going to hit me pretty soon and i think it's all started with that big hit on the sack from perimeters don't make them run back in towards the defensive line burmeister has all kinds of time now he rolls a pocket has a receiver open in the end zone for the score now dwayne lofton went out of bounds before catching that ball but i don't see i do see one now in the one yard okay i didn't see it initially he went so far out of bounds he was over he was heading the road before he came back in and the defender who was covering him wound up on the ground so there you see the the official there with his hat off that the hat off will signify that someone went out of bounds now the flag could be for offensive pass interference illegal touching offense number 18. she born out of bounds the first you want to try to plead the case that he was forced out of bounds so watching the bottom of the screen you can't be forced out of bounds if no one touches you but he also again it was a little bit closer than i initially thought right looked like that heel might have come down out of bounds so dwayne lofton disagrees he was looking for his first career touchdown catch here he turned the corner he got his hips around previous players on the burger and i was gonna say this can be reviewed there's more teams that become bowl eligible than there are spots in bogeys but virginia tech the way their fans are they usually get selected because they travel so well and yeah that it's something that again these players all look forward to bowl season coaches look forward to fall season it's a really good opportunity to get 10 11 more practices with your guys to help improve for next year after about five minutes left to go in the second quarter and so the thumb process must be looking we're gonna run the ball with our quarterback anyways we might as well put jordan moore in who's our best runner he might have to throw the ball here on third five pressure comes trying to get on the outside good coverage by waller and a flag comes just too good waller can't believe it fans here in separate flags on the field as all of our officials now are meeting near midfield to kind of sort this one out there are two fouls on the play holding offense number one after the play unsportsmanlike conduct defense number one both those files will be enforced unsportsmanlike foul carries an automatic first down that's number one's first unsportsmanlike file in the game let's see what the unsportsmanlike was all about with smart connor see him at the bottom right now that goes a punch that's a punch um you can't do that i don't care if this is football or not you absolutely cannot too you think about the targeting calls you get a lot of these targeting calls that you're like ah you know it wasn't intent that dude just punched a guy in the head and he can keep playing but you hit a guy by accident a little bit too high you're done for the entire week doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense sometimes what virginia tech is dealing with here today is too many penalties they already have a season high already before that penalty was marched off 72 yards today mark and we still have 4 31 left to go in the third quarter yeah you're right and some of them are just you know undisciplined penalties like that last one but there are these are two teams that both usually don't have a lot of penalties and today is really an anomaly for that either way that extends the drive for duke moore's gonna run it nowhere to go absolutely buried in the backfield olaf field is of course involved he is so hyped all the time i like i you know i just i i love that i love watching it and this is a guy he has waited his turn rachard ashby they called him rook great linebacker for virginia tech for a long time and dak he played next to him where he really should have been in that mike linebacker spot and he's waiting his turn he's stuck around and he's had a fantastic game this week last week he had 10 tackles first boston college [Applause] right now for virginia tech defensively they're just pinning their ears back aren't they well you should there's no threat of a pass i mean again when you have a quarterback that has only attempted six passes all year not necessarily necessarily because he hasn't been in the game it's just because he's not a proficient passer he's a better runner you load up i mean just look at the defense every single player is within 10 yards of live scrimmage they played calhoun get some of those yards back and you see the ability right i mean that was a that was a great pass like that was a well thrown ball well timed over the middle and that was one of the rare times that virginia tech decided look we're going to drop back in cover too and drop back cover two you don't pressure the quarterback it makes it a little bit easier now in third and long only three defensive linemen up let's see if they bring pressure with amari barno standing up in the middle of the field oh goodness a lot of hitting going out there more again running for his life and he gets rid of it that should be an incomplete pass [Applause] pollard from his nose tackled position putting on the pressure but everybody was applying and watch number 11 of mark bonner he just absolutely ran over jacob in the middle of the field and marie barneau started as a linebacker he's 6-6 245 pounds he has transitioned into probably the best pass rusher on this virginia tech team he can do it with his hand in the dirt or walk standing up and now on fourth down and nine in desperation mode now he's lined up at the top of your screen i think duke is going to be a timeout offense the five-yard penalty fourth down duke couldn't get the timeout called to lay a game another five yards back the offense is staying on the field you got jordan moore at quarterback and jake bobo is also not on the field so right now i mean you got to look for your best option and it could be eli pankle or jalen calhoun daley calhoun i think is the top of the screen flushed now we get another flag down just throws it into the middle of the field vanderbilt's first interception as a member of the virginia tech hokies will check the mark but you gotta think this [Music] bailed out again herzlich oh boy well yo first it was the jamari connor punch to the face now it was illegal hands to the face and that's just the kind of day that duke has had the only way you can get first downs right now is the other team having a pedal and i think you got to start pressuring you know again what's the worst that can happen you get a turn you turn the ball up right but you're not moving the ball at all downfield [Applause] touchdown blue devils that's eli panko and that's exactly what we're talking about just take the shots and there was only so many times that virginia tech can line up in zero coverage without getting challenged good job by eli banker on the outside again he did it but he stood in there and he delivered a ball where his receiver could catch it no middle of field safety because they were just playing man zero pressure [Applause] and with the p-80 okay on number 11. amari all the way to the left you see him he's rushing off that left edge and he's pushing back the offensive alignment and you see how the hand is up in that neck area trying to bend back the offensive alignment and that's what yeah that's what it was called you get the hands up there and then pull back it's one thing but he extended it he kept driving and that led to another opportunity and i i had a defensive coach in college frank spaziani that would always say that a 17-point lead is one of the most dangerous leads to because when you're up 17 you're feeling really good however one score all of a sudden makes it a really close game if duke all of a sudden scores seven more points then we have a 10 point game it's a whole different ball game so virginia tech defensively needs to understand that and their offense needs to have a sustained drive here that hands to the face penalty negating the interception giving jordan moore that one more opportunity to find pancal in the end zone what can king do on the return [Applause] [Music] the second half but even with duke playing probably their third string quarterback yeah they were able to mount a drive to at least give them some hope here with 218 left to go in this third quarter yeah anytime you know anytime you score points start putting pressure on and now let's see if this virginia tech offense can respond fake to blackshear vermeister to throw robinson a great move to get back outside close to midfield before he's run out of bounds yet another flag i think they're going to call an eligible receiver downfield and that was receiving downfield on the pass offense number 68. five driver lt first down more that time the right guard you see on the double team and like just working up on the on the linebacker towards the bottom of your screen they're just not used to plays taking more than two or three seconds to against develop burmeister now he's done that so many times today with positive yards guards lost on that penalty [Applause] we have another injured player down this is a duke blue devil back in the offensive backfield yeah that's r.j obama who had that interception i think you're right in the first half you got to know pretty well didn't you did yeah his dad a former new york giant player he was around the facility a lot while i was with the new york giants and i got to know rj from being just a young young pup didn't he wear number 44 in high school need to honor you i don't know i don't know whether it was to honor me at but uh you're saying there's no connection there at all i just i don't want to uh i don't want to make assumptions because you know what happens when you assume things um but yeah no i i've gotten really close with him love seeing his development and uh you know not saying he's 94 for any reason either but i did like that number as well and you know he's just been a really good player his dad is a phenomenal phenomenal man in the development of rj a great lacrosse player too chris nice dude like that that size too that's frightening tell me about it [Music] so after the burmeister runs second down in ten looking at the sideline to change the play last year in the backfield with him he already has 112 yards rushing today and full catch in the ball too he's had a good day they'll give it to blackshear just pounds into the teeth that big defense rory on the stop [Music] for virginia tech duke scores give himself a little bit of life boy it would be amazing for them if they could get three and out here and get off the field defensively well you're right and you talk about again that 17-point margin just gives a little bit life to this duke defense they get a stop here they're pretty close burmeister to throw now he's thinking about running backs out frye is there to apply the pressure great catch did he stay in bounds we got the hat down and flags down well we know what that means we've seen that before caleb smith was just trying to toe tap on the sideline to stay in bounds and he made the catch but he must have been out of bounds [Applause] illegal touching offense yeah it was a great effort and you see him right at up right there that right toe kind of steps on the line yep good call by the officials how about that duke defense stands [Applause] and now they'll get the ball back peter moore with the kick that's josh blackwell all the way back to his 22. good kick by moore good coverage as well blackwell just trying to dance out of it it almost did but the hokies doing a all right well now i would say okay let's do the same thing we did last drive if you do right however they didn't really get much going until the penalties helped them so you know jordan moore he had a really good pass you want to build off that pass he made continue to pressure the outside jake bobo's back on the field this drive he's your big target one of the top receivers third receiver in the acc in terms of catches and again virginia tech has got man-to-man across the board [Applause] slipping a little bit as he tried to get outside and jamari connor connor and hollyfield have been just everywhere unfortunately sometimes some laundry on the field associated with it but connor is just he's going to be exhausted tonight final seconds ticking down in this third quarter that's the end of the third quarter the blue devils with some hope and they string together another drive and claw their way back into this game right with his legs if he can get outside uses a block from durant to get the first down and that's exactly why jordan is in the game he is so good with his legs and we saw that one good pass he had a couple good passes he had but i mean this is a complete breakdown of a play the credits of the wide receivers of running backs they started blocking [Applause] durant gonna get a rare carry here in the second half and he picks up four yards and that's the difference that durant makes that's four yards on first down i mean that's that's massive when you look at the long-term success of a drive picking up four yards on first down now allows for some of the shorter passes to become more effective see virginia tech again they're playing zero coverage moore just gets banged around as he rolls his way to the 44 yard line on the stop but she was third down third and three i mean look at durant's carries two in the second quarter one in the third quarter and that one you just saw here in the fourth yeah yep again he's lower leg injury dealing with a hand injury as well been used as decoy at times bobo in motion more now rolling the pocket just trying to find that first down marker and can't maybe got a yard on that play but that's two yards shy of where he needed to get [Applause] now you got to go for it yeah you got it you got to go for it now again you don't have to you have lumi young nate thompson and jalen alexander three safeties in this game [Applause] it's good to see r.j obama back on the field number 94 but just the speed of braxton berman he might be limited with you know his injury towards his you know in his torso but he's still got that speed it's just hard to bring down a guy that fast he's got 56 yards rushing on the day to go along with 202 throwing he'll try and throw here back the other way blackshear has a blocker in front of him cuts it back inside he'll score had a couple of flags going against him today maybe frustrating in that regard was out in front and gave him the block that sprung yeah burmeister finished the play on his back again but this has been a really good game plan by brad cornelson he understands the limitations that his offense has right now and he is used for those limitations to his advantage getting burmeister on the run away from where the intended pass is going to go he's able to throw it back to raheem blackshear and what a day raheem blackshare has had at home with the second touchdown of the day one on the ground one through the air all hopes from his 11. full head of steam this guy returned for a not having the arm strength to really put it out there right now and i don't know whether it's the cold weather or the wind or what it is but they have not connected on deep balls very well more at all personality-wise both these they're both really hard workers and really good players oh still loose it's gonna be picked up by virginia tech and this is going to be a touchdown taiwan garbage and that will be a popular touchdown with his teammates and it is as you can see him on the sideline he's running away from his teammates because he knows they're gonna mob him now he's looking for a lot of last year he was really on the field we're coming by the defense for a touchdown that plays under further review he went home for a lot of that he talked about his kind of emotional health and he was a little bit emotionally fragile last year and while he was home he got calls daily from fuente from their defensive line coach nice shot that time by noel paul or stripping it yeah absolutely and then being in the right place at the right time is taiwan guard but you know being a part of this team helped him kind of recover from some of the mental health stuff that he was dealing with and he is a big proponent of working on your mental health and your mental strength as well as your physical health and your physical strength and there he is right here johnny on the spot picking up the football burning vernon for six points we had a great conversation with him this week just an inspiring guy really good dude see that ball bouncing around that's like it's like someone just put the dinner the dinner plate out and you haven't eaten in a week oh give me that and meat not salad and sides and everything you know what i'm talking about i mean steak chicken breast we went to the uh the media cafeteria here in the stadium goddard's looking for the steak and he's looking for all the meat and the protein salad sides line rice corn green beans okay where's the off at the score but when you score on defense or special teams that that makes this crowd feel a certain type of way so you're right they were all his peoples after that one it's beamer ball still see more of now they're going back to that empty formation which we've seen all game the empty formation has really led to a lot of pressure on the quarterback and more kind of running for his life said today we might see a little bit of him in this game but as the season progresses we're going to use it and with the injury to matteo duran wouldn't be surprised if again he sees more action here a member of that class from duke also frank beamer yeah yeah yep and uh dan marino will be there too i think my wife's favorite football player because of ace ventura so i'm gonna have to definitely ask him about that you'll have your wife with you i'm sure you're gonna bring the kids down too could you imagine that oh my goodness yeah well i i know i could imagine that that's why we'll do it over here what are you doing put that down the entire night knocks kade i'm getting an opportunity now at quarterback for virginia tech had to come in and spell burmeister a bit in the first half kings also did a nice job today running and catching the football had a long touchdown catch in that first half here's another thing just about this acc and how these teams have really support each other the year that i was sick with cancer at boston college every single university that we visited at away games they all had they presented checks towards ewing sarcoma the cancer i had researched uh and i remember being down here and frank beamer was the coach uh and they had a really good running back evans who was out for that year too they presented me with just one of those big checks and every single acc school did it that year it just you know it was really one of the first times where you you really feel the the community that the ecc brings together yeah you're going to compete every single week on the field but this conference knows that it's about more than just football and i just i really appreciate that about the acc second down and six here for the hokies taking their time running this clock i'll say this too mark the three years you and i have been calling games on the acc network every coach and the players we talk to they have a lot of respect for you for two things as king gets free oh that still on his feet he's got a blocker in front of down to the 10-yard that line kid right there that's the best best shot of the day look at this i mean this is what they were so excited about 2019 with king he's just taking him a little time to mature he's got to learn everything he needs to do he's had a fantastic day today just wrapping things up with you about when i was playing cut cliff is one of them some of the coaches were playing when you were playing like ferris state that's true yeah safety here played against played against him and virginia tech honored a bunch of the the alumni that are joining the virginia tech hokie sports hall of fame at halftime there were a couple guys macho harris one of them that i got to play against while i was here this team it was raheem blackshear at the beginning of the season jalen holstein was getting a lot of carries then it was malachi thomas in the last couple weeks malachi thomas having a little bit of an injury today keyshawn king has come up and just been fantastic and that was a powerful run by the speedster back on that last touchdown came into this game with 29 yards rushing on the season king two games one of which will come at miami next week and then they finish things off in the battle for the commonwealth against uva and i i'm so glad to see jordan running like that in that last play that the way that knee buckled and twisted on that one run it's just me you like hold your breath i think you know you just look back to normal right there so kind of shook it off and he's back once this game is over after this next 10 seconds you got to ice that baby make sure it doesn't swell up because you got games left they're going to need jordan moore just hanging out outside for a little
