david cutcliffe he's got a team that he's talked throughout the week they need to focus on the little things too many penalties too many missed assignments and right out the gate from the giddy up they'll be chasing around brennan armstrong in company here playing defense duke won the toss selected to defer hubbard kicks it away this is kept with the fair catch inside the five brandon armstrong and his teammates with their four and two record two and two in conference play they are two-and-one at home last three seasons at home they are an incredible 14-2 they've won 19 of their last 22 and armstrong has been playing at a very high level this season james the 17 tds second best in the acc behind kenny pickett of pittsburgh [Applause] first and ten for the cavaliers from the 25 on homecomings left side choice for armstrong that is complete on the 30-yard line and it's dontavian wicks on the catch for seven yards good to see dontavian wicks back out there he left the game in louisville he's had a couple big hits knocking him out of the game the last two games in those two wins miami and then against louisville what looked to be a targeting call was a personal foul nonetheless and he'll get him seven on first down second in short down the sea man caught as wix again close to the 45 of duke plenty for a first down and into duke territory 22 yards well robert anaya's offense just comes out slinging with the left-hander just as they finished up in louisville but finishing up in louisville because they absolutely had to 21 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and win it 34-33 louisville but why not start it off when you've got the best passer in the nation right now through the air armstrong still has it around the left side cuts it back at the 30 and down near the 20 from brennan armstrong hayward made the tackle armstrong on the run let's see if we can see big zero in here jelani woods on the outside look at him blowing the defensive back way out of the picture and there's nobody to turn brennan armstrong back into the rest of that defense way too much room the damage is done there's a good shot of the graduate transfer georgia tech had a couple as well five fumbles that went back to the offense right back into the hands of the player david cutcliffe talked about it ad nauseum throughout the week these little things these little penalties you've finally got a little bit of momentum going here on this opening drive and then you go back five yards don't let it be a drive killer but you put yourself in a bad situation now second and thirteen holmberg looking left all the way safety valve durant puts the hand down at the 35 and stumbles forward grant again on the tackle of matteo duran six 195 pounds and a he's been making plays from everywhere on the field 11th play of the drive durant trying to reverse direction at the eighth just the yard of the play for durant the blue devils in the red zone this season you saw the numbers seventh best of the acc with 16 touchdowns there is a virginia player down 91 is mandy alonso tamir carter made the tackle on the play but they will attend to alonso with the blue devils in the red zone trying to get on the board cavaliers lead it let's take a look at that last play durant on the run and watched the football in his left arm on the way out wow so it's actually alonso who was banged up on that plate um that's well and we're being told that they're taking a look at it so you had alonzo who made the initial tackle but he was down and he was helped up to the virginia sideline and jamir carter also into the play nice of that gentleman there in the shades to help the officials out after further review on the field stands it'll be third down for duke that's a tough one that's one of those had it been ruled a fumble it would have stood and remained a fumble but since it was called down on the field and the injury giving them a chance as we went to break to take a look at it but duke's got to take better care of the football that's the second ball been put on the ground here today by the blue devil offense they've got to clean these little things up three for three on third down in the drive holmberg to the goal line to bobo and it hit his hands bouncing incomplete nick jackson in coverage near the goal line seventh pass of the drive by holmberg against five rushes for the blue devils in this drive as you see homeboy likes that big target of bobo and you know that's that's a hard ball to catch coming in there so fast but it's a ball needless to say had they been perfect on field goals they'd be coming in with a big win over georgia tech charlie ham over there warming up right now and you know he only missed two all of last year and and ham's missed four this year and that's this the first miss [Applause] on the first try for allswinger duke lost at home last saturday against georgia tech you saw it on your regional sports networks 31-27 that one scooped up the top of the turf by billy kemp and he lunges forward near the 25 or six five yards for kemp and thompson on the tackle jeremiah lewis does a good job of reading it but you got to motor down it's one thing to read it and react but get up there and set that edge and take on that blocker and your teammates can come make a play for a one-yard gain instead they'll get about five or six here 22 straight games with a reception now for kevin this one over the middle he's got it again beyond the 35-yard line thompson on the tackle again 12-yard gain virginia they've got some big bodies to throw to here for brennan armstrong but they've also got the little big man and billy kemp at nine catches against the hurricanes in that win a couple weeks ago it was the sixth time he's had nine or more catches in a game two quick ones here on this drive armstrong trying to extend the play now he'll run challenges the defender at the 45-yard line hold your breath bronco mendenhall eight yards on the run by armstrong well a pretty good job in the secondary because there was absolutely no pressure on armstrong he has plenty of time and finally just decides to tuck it and go and knows he can do some damage and everybody in cavs uniform holding their breath with bronco papa up the middle near the virginia logo at midfield for five yards on a first down [Applause] [Music] there you see robert and i the kahuku red raider in his high school days that that's where it starts and that's what matters most when you're a red raider it's a lot of pride there from the north shore father of kahuku red raider as well [Applause] byu won a national title all day for armstrong near the boundary and caught starling has the grab [Music] [Applause] [Music] good job breaking that route off that ball waiting on him as he comes back to it good concentration putting the foot down for the sophomore from nashville just his third catch of the season that went for 18 yards ball with the 32 armstrong it's popped in the air near the 35 yard line rj oben deflecting that ball even though he's had a lot of protection a lot of time in the pocket there still has to be that internal clock in your head as a quarterback knowing i've been back here too long this is just too easy and you've got it you've got a hard rushing defensive front for duke that they've been stymied for the most part but they're going to get theirs they're on scholarship too armstrong got to be careful with that football and got to have a better feel for when he's been back there too long loss of three on the previous play there was movement on the line looking down by the pylon and the end zone and it's knocked away at the last moment wix was the receiver josh blackwell made the defensive play for duke but there is a penalty marker offside defense number 94. penalty second down mike roach makes it official yeah nice job watch up top good job by blackwell who continues to play free play for armstrong but he plays it smart one of 19 graduates here on this duke team and you know just as it should be played you're right there in his hip pocket snapped that head around and knocked the football down after the penalty against duke armstrong comes to the other side nearly anticipated intercepted but caught kept staying with it billy kent grabs it out of the air as it bounced off at jeremiah lewis 16 yards on the play fortunate for the cavs these wahoos are living right these days couple missed field goals in the last two games and then this one could have should have been not only an interception but probably six points jeremiah lewis right through his hands an excellent read and break on the ball but instead bounces right into the hands of kemp for his third catch from the 15 before the play whistles false start offense number 69 it's a five yard penalty first down risk laser flagged for the confraction six of seven for armstrong so far got him back into the red zone here in their second possession he's also run for 29 yards not afraid to absorb some contact and challenge the duke defense one of the more physical units in this conference armstrong little dance and toss over the middle that was a bit of a congested area kemp is pleading for a flag and then his attempt at trying to draw a flag unsuccessful i won't give you a flag but i'll help you out with the uniform you know and you got to think that ball went sailing through the secondary because kemp's route was disturbed but still armstrong settle it down a little bit and take care of this football second down in 15 here just inside of three minutes to go in our first quarter rm strong to the end zone [Applause] no flags thrown kept the intended receiver jeremiah lewis trying to defend him as armstrong was looking for that back corner of the end zone to his left armstrong or kemp rather needs a he needs a tighter jersey that jersey's got too much slack on it too much to grab i don't know if it's if it was illegal is illegal now but i used to wear carpet tape underneath my jersey to stick on my shoulder pads so those big offensive linemen couldn't grab me maybe you need some carpet tape if uh oh here's a free play four receivers on the set to the end zone 11th play of the drive into the corner of the end zone for the touchdown dontavian weeks pulls it in from perfectly thrown football and how about the concentration the focus by three dontavian wicks glad they got him cleared to play for this week if you're a virginia fan got to be fired up one of the best in the nation 10th coming in with over 550 receiving yards just keeps on adding on [Music] touchdown pass number 18 on the season for brennan armstrong and that was simply perfect into the hands of dontavian wix for his sixth receiving touchdown of the season a 20-yard play as the sophomore is on the business end that he hauls it in third catch of the game for wix results in six points for the cavaliers [Music] extra point from farrell a low line drive over second base up the middle and good ten nothing virginia late in the first [Music] happy new year tomorrow happy new year don't make me get emotional now on homecomings and i see a little bit of drizzle starting out on scott stadium field people are swaying back and forth and also reaching for whatever they have to provide cover from that just characterizes who he is as a player coach said it really calms the guys down offensively and it sets the tempo for what they want to do every single drive even if he makes a mistake he comes length of the field last time out gunner holmberg and company and missing the field goal now down 10. three or four on third down durant trying to get another one and he does it durant close to the 40-yard line matteo durant tripped up by joey blunt on the rush in a first down for duke well that's how they did it on the last series somebody's got to be out there in three ready to flatten and go make the play you flatten out maybe he still gets the first down but you don't give up the big hitter and durant making him pay on the outside he usually butters his bread between the tackle box billy kemp is the deep man [Applause] camp near the 15 a lot of activity around him flag is out ball was on the turf that punt was 46 yards and kemp was able to cover but there was a flag one of the more experienced punt returners in college football so a lot of faith in him back there looked like somebody was banged into him kit catch interference kicking team number 42 15-9 first half [Music] [Applause] gonna be called on chaka hayward there's yeah and just clips him right there didn't he didn't look like he was locked into him and hustling for the ball wouldn't have mattered anyway with high school he's going to spot the ball at the 30 with 40 seconds left it's already four accepted penalties against duke for 35 yards as they move that ball up to the 30 and now up to the [Applause] calm armstrong the lefty rolls out and he's got that big target just waiting on him they move the chains they'll run this time with tyler papa [Applause] up to the 48-yard line five yards on the play cavaliers will let the clock run out in the first so they'll have the ball when we come back they've also got the lead 31-yard field goal from farrell billy kemp with the concentration we are rolling down the hillside in charlottesville dontavious wix has the td catch in the first quarter from brendan armstrong good job i've been impressed with this defensive secondary both of these teams very physical watching duke last week even though they had some guys that got banged up a little bit right back out there one of them on a big interception was leonard johnson glad to have him back let's see what they got now in the third down at four 49 on the season third best of the acc armstrong surrounded and dropped near the 46-yard line gary smith from sheffield tennessee on the play loss of three drawing up some pressure guillery and albert the co-defensive coordinators and a good job staying in their lanes the guys who didn't get there were waiting on armstrong and that's a good job big play getting off the field careful in the middle of the field sorry tommy punt fake situations here in the middle you got to be on alert jacob finn is punting boiling the deep man transfer from brown oh did just get it away there was contact the flag is out [Applause] this one will bounce into the end zone as boiling through the fake up near the 15. it's a punch of 54 yards but finn hit the deck after the punt left in the kicker defense number three [Applause] yeah it's it's it's the big one because it's that plant leg and so dangerous and and again there's the pressure and you know what it got to go at an angle where that ball is going to leave the foot but he looked like he tripped over his teammate and flew right into the punter so instead of duke football and a chance to go down and chip away at that 10-point lead it's a fresh set of downs for brennan armstrong and company crushing penalty against the blue devils armstrong floats that one complete and near the 20. [Applause] brennan armstrong for 19 yards what a toss by armstrong yeah and again nice job we've seen homburg on the other side that little touch pass over the underneath zone dropper and a good job by armstrong so he can do the same ball out of the hands but out of bounds so first down for virginia here fields made the catch right to the cusp of the red zone for virginia the left-hander to the end zone this fields again trying to get to the end zone josh blackwell trying to stay with them there's space they're created by fields a little bit of a push off no call but how about the job blackwell earlier you saw him snap that head around when he was in position here nothing else matters to him but making up and getting back there in in the scene in that picture and he does a good job but as you look at that replay it's perhaps just a drop ball i don't know that blackwell actually ripped it away thompson has it cuts it back to the 10 breaking tackles busting his way inside the five lunging for the goal line and they'll mock them down near the one key tom thompson rumbling for 19 yards the one armed bandit 99 has been so special here for this virginia football team bronco mendenhall loves him i asked him yesterday i said you like this football team it seems like a team that's that's easy to like he said i really like keaton thompson i'm just off the field and talking to him doesn't just love what he does on the field even though that hasn't been so special and we hadn't heard much from 99 but you knew it was just a matter of time technically a pass this is a handoff to the goal line and in for a touchdown thompson finishes off the drive from a yard away and virginia is back in the end zone in the second quarter he got him down there why not let him punch it in he's a tall guy in six four and he was running just about that high but enough momentum to just cross that plane [Music] and what should be duke's football right now with the roughing the kicker penalty back in the hands of virginia and now with a 17 point lead tom third rushing touchdown of the season for kitan thompson from a yard away for the senior from new orleans louisiana virginia 17 duke nothing in the second quarter duran he's one of those guys when i talked to this week he's from a small town called plum branch south carolina only 87 people he told me it's something you see out of a movie one stoplight a convenience store and a gym he said he's always been a big football fan growing up he would watch football with his dad and immediately after he'd watch a game he'd run outside and go practice with his grandfather he told his dad when he was nine years old i want to go to every single football stadium when i get older and watch games he told me it's funny now because couple undefeated blue devils it's gonna have to be come from behind fashion if they're going to get their first win in the acc this season as they stretch out durant and cut them down 0-2 in conference play noah taylor staying with the play in a loss of one excellent job they there's one thing that burned him in the first quarter a couple third down plays is durant bouncing it outside do a good job of remedying that officially no gain on the previous play here's durant left side with a hole little stiff arm near the 40. flag comes out as he got tangled up with the defender antonio clary 12 yards on the run by durant if it stands we'll see what mike roach has to say all these bodies are walking back the other way it looks like they're holding offense number 79 the 10-yard penalty second down yeah that's the big tackle carson van lynn and i was just about to pat him on the back saying he blew his guy out of there and there you see he's got a hold of him had a piece of anthony johnson so that's penalty number six against the blue devils marches that football back to the 25 for holmberg drops it off durant trying to get his footing play really never developed james tough if you start calling them you're gonna have to call a lot but it's third down and forever now for holmberg third and fifteen kind of run away from that cavalier defense and they can only sail it towards his own bench looking for bobo here's a perfect example tom noah taylor is held as he's rushing the quarterback worse than those those first two holding calls there you see him right there virginia tech coverage begins 12 30. check your local listings for the game and time in your area how about this these teams have not met in blacksburg since 2003 virginia tech was number four in the country and they beat syracuse 51-7 the orange coming off the crushing loss yesterday against the clemson tigers at the dome we've got that game our first trip back to blacksburg since the six over two james thriller oh goodness look out two years ago against carolina five overtimes wasn't good enough no virginia tech ultimately winning the longest game in acc history of course the overtime rules have changed so it's going to be very difficult to get to six overtimes nowadays well not necessarily it still is still even for each side it's just different it'll be a different way of getting there it'll be that's right shorter that's right it would be shorter if we got to six overtime so we'll be in blacksburg next week we're in charlottesville this week for devin darrington on the rush shot near the 40. very balanced attack prior to the start of this drive 10 passes 10 runs for the virginia offense under offensive coordinator robert and i there's darrington the graduate transfer from harvard mike hollins usually would be that second back in for robert and i behind wayne talapapa but he's injured they don't have his services look out first down and more to the duke side of the 50 darrington that's going to put virginia over 200 yards total offense in this first half a 12-yard run for darrington number 26 in orange blue and white they say that darrington stepped on campus and immediately everybody was impressed with his work ethic won the dirty dozen award in the weight room stepped on what james oh man the grounds what a loser the grounds that pass behind the intended receiver looking for kemp good catch i'm paying attention over here come on man catch oh that's all right we got it we got no curl up in the corner kemp did not catch that so from the 48 of duke now for this virginia offense second in the conference they averaged 526 yards per game total most of that in the past game 413 yards per game and that's best of the acc second in the entire nation [Applause] something didn't look right there no that was all kinds of ugly they had armstead in the lineup as well snap infraction offense from 55 five yard penalty second down although they've had a couple of those they're this year and not quite that ugly though they'll back it up though so helping out duke a little bit here trying to cut this in half make it a third down in medium perhaps with these wraps armstrong with the patience throws it to the 40. that is caught spinning for what looks like a first down jelani woods the graduate student from ellenwood georgia at 16 yards well you've got the protection to start armstrong's there a little bit of pressure late as he takes hits the grass but then you got a match-up that's just not fair i mean jalen alexander is a heck of a player the junior is 511 160 though and he's going up against that mountain of a man at six foot seven 270 pounds and jelani woods i'll take the guy wearing zero every day no matter how hard they fight on defense woods has four td catches this season that is incomplete near the 30-yard line billy kemp and that one's got to be on the receiver james although the ball might be getting a little slippery out there with the wet conditions but still yeah good job too by daquan money johnson by that's in in the days of old that's that's the hit that the defensive backs would just take a nice free shot open up on a guy who just missed the ball there you see him avoid that and avoid a penalty flag and perhaps an ejection and force this second down and 10 here deep drop from armstrong through the progression has a man at the 30. first down inside the 25-yard line don tavion wix and 13 yards for virginia to the 24. when duke brings three or four guys they've got to get a little bit of pressure there's absolutely no pressure nobody gets a sniff of brendan armstrong and that's just not fair for a secondary that i've been impressed with here for duke watching him throughout this season but but even the best secondary in college football in the nfl can't hang with these speedy receivers like wix when nobody's putting any pressure at all on the quarterback good job by that offensive line 12 of 18 178 yards for armstrong the pump of the throw over the middle and caught near the seven yard line thompson [Music] thumbs up for keaton thompson thumbs up through that cast got a couple more weeks before he gets it off but it certainly doesn't seem to be bothering him there's the clean pocket again and there's thompson and even the even going down trying to brace this fall that's that can't be comfortable with those fingers sticking out of that cast but keethon thompson just moments ago on that touchdown drive had his first two touches now he's touching it down near the goal line again here he is in motion 19 yards on the last play down by the goal line and knocked away dequan johnson knocked it away from woods they called dequan money good job by money reading the eyes of armstrong but who's going to make the big play on this defense who's going to turn this momentum and turn this tide a little bit with a big turnover they've had their hands on plenty of balls here throughout the first half who's gonna hold on to it and pick it off three for three in the red zone of the game for virginia [Applause] armstrong [Applause] trying to throw behind the defender and receive her back shoulder to wix and he couldn't spin fast enough jeremiah lewis defending for the reason he couldn't react is louis lewis had he had it he had a hole in his shoulder pass but he had that hand tucked inside the shoulder pad so you couldn't really see it the contrast of that white on orange has been easy for these officials to see [Applause] third and goal one through three on third down in the game virginia armstrong extending the play improvising running for the pilot diving oh a touchdown for armstrong takes it in from seven yards away for virginia [Applause] improvising nothing's there breaks down try to buy a little bit of time forget it if it's to be it's up to me diving forward hitting that pylon that's a touchdown and a nice effort play when everybody covered in the secondary by brennan armstrong third rushing touchdown of the season for armstrong and farrell has the extra point [Applause] well lauren told us earlier that brennan armstrong said last week passing td that last one from seven yards away what an effort by armstrong diving for that front left pylon and a score for the wahoos [Music] you know james the overall series pretty close 39 wins for virginia 33 for duke but virginia has won six in a row in the series and the struggles for the blue devils offensively james well it's a duke blue devil team tom that's used to playing here in charlottesville it's crazy three straight games due to covet of course last year that they've had right here at virginia 1920 and now i'm 21 and i'm gonna have to come from way behind if they want to go back home victorious just 107 total yards prior to this play for the duke offense as durant gets bounced out of bounds and we check it with lauren thanks guys yeah walking from sideline to sideline over on the duke sideline very quiet right now it's concentrated very serious and going over the virginia sideline they're hooting and hollering jumping up and down cheering for each other so definitely different energies on both sidelines right now it's really 24 nothing [Applause] dude needs to make something happen in the latter stages of this second quarter that's just the yard durant balmui on the tackle [Music] i mean james duke is a strong offense they average close to 500 yards per game that's third best of the acc but not today well they do it leaning on one of the best backs around there you see some of that energy from that virginia sideline but virginia's doing a good job of shutting them down this time durant has just enough to get past the 35 and that should be enough for a first down west weeks on the tackle to topple durant but not before a first down at that 35 and they'll mark it just beyond the 35-yard line big big first down pickup even though it was close just gotta stay out on that football field try to make something happen here six and a half minutes left in the first half ten carries in 64 yards mateo durant last week crossed 2 000 yards for his duke rushing career and that tough loss in the fourth quarter against georgia tech holmberg wants to air it out this is one on one a lot of back and forth bobo was the receiver nick grant the defender homecomings well just like nick grant devonte cross was a cornerback last year he's in the right spot for this one little bit long on the throw and the who's with the ball back three-time acc quarterback of the week coming off of a acc quarterback of the week award this past week to come from behind win over louisville really struggled brennan armstrong the two interceptions in the third quarter but bounced right back and like he always does stepping up big in the big time moments for coach bronco mendenhall through the ball a career high 60 times last week in the last second victory against louisville when virginia scored with 22 seconds left it was a 2d pass from armstrong to mish that one to billy kemp in four yards threw for 487 yards last week second most in school history you know who has the most brennan armstrong did it against north carolina with 554 yards passing that was a shootout it was a loss for the cavaliers he's got an open man at the 40. rayshawn henry senior from kaleen texas has it 25 yards for virginia just spreading the football around that's that's what's so impressive about this offense too it's just all the different targets and look at that throw right there thrown in between right in the in the hole in that zone and finding this guy rayshawn 179 yards armstrong going deep too far for the intended receiver wix was down there he's one of the seven different receivers that armstrong has used so far in the first half sixth year for the offensive coordinator robert and i there was a player down josh blackwell for duke in the end zone 5 11 to go in this second quarter we saw david cutcliff pacing up and down those sidelines this first half has not gone his team's way for sure well and the frustrating thing has to be it's it's it's some little things that gave some opportunities early on in this game to a team that's really rolling in virginia when you've got a team that's putting together wins like they have been and things are are falling right for them and they have confidence that you can't help them out when you're on the road in the acc but that's just what they've done it's one thing that he's really preached to this team they've got it they've got to take care of those little things but they have it in this first half and it's turned into huge plays armstrong caught woods just inside that 30-yard line nate thompson makes the stop 11 yards and a first down for virginia nice throwing catch but then the effort [Applause] for jelani woods to just drag the defender across that [Music] yard line to move those chains so you go under five minutes in the first half three catches for woods that ball bouncing around in the pocket [Music] grant mitch with the football good job by mish be around that football defensively they see it they just can't get to it and again a fortunate bounce for virginia things just seem to be going their way a big touchdown catch last weekend looked like it just kind of slipped out of his fingertips huh james yeah as he went to bring it back to throw it that mean that ball was available and on the turf in a loss of eight alertly covered by grant mitch who as you said had the catch with 22 seconds left for a td last week against louisville winning points originally i thought his hand was hit second and 18. flip forward kemp trying to get away can't quite get to the 30. got five yards on second effort you see the body come flying in on top that was courtesy of ben fry there's another look at it i don't think it got clipped james no no no it you're absolutely right just looked like a wet ball coming out of that left hand and virginia lucky to get it back but now they've got a third down and 14. two for four on third down this is third and long it's about the only thing armstrong has not done right in this first half get an eye on jelani woods right now he's lined up there up top at the tight end position with his hand in the dirt armstrong releases caught inside the 20 balls on the turf bouncing around was it covered up [Applause] it could be first down yardage near the 16-yard line for wix that's 16 yards and it is a first down almost lost the handle i mean the opportunities it it's not like duke hasn't had a chance to to intercept a couple balls and it's a great play there's a football move i mean that's definitely a fumble great job to come in there and strip that ball away but it goes right back into the bread basket it was dominique long that that knocked it away dantavion wix gets it right back and we've seen that a handful of times already here in this first half they're gonna take a look at it for a time out anyway but i'm sure they'll take a look at it make sure that he did indeed make a football move that's a complete pass and it certainly looked that way yeah he takes a couple steps they're showing the replay here in the house and it's i don't even need to look at that one so still just under three minutes left there it is good job by long to poke it out of there but the blue devils just can't catch a break in virginia not only catching breaks on these on these fumbles here in the first and second quarter but at the end of the last two games last week the cavaliers won on a missed field goal by louisville the last play of the game from 49 yards away the previous week they won at miami on a missed field goal that hit the upright at the very end of the game and the funny thing was last week bronco mendenhall was not feeling very confident going into that fourth quarter james he down 30 to 13 right he thought his flat out he's getting ready to discuss a loss armstrong off to the right they're gonna mark that one near the 20 or so [Music] didn't look like kemp had it but standing at the 20. did he have control before he dropped it i that's why they marked it at the 20 and i bet they're going to look at this right yeah in the field it was the receiver complete the process of the catch fumbled and then recovered it that that should be an incomplete pass and gotta get a number here 23. good job by lemmy young breaking on that football and breaking it up and back-to-back plays this secondary of duke continues to fight and get after that football trying to jar it loose they cause one fumble and what looks to be an incomplete pass ruling coming up here we marked it at the 20. it was a loss on the play so if it's overturned it might even benefit virginia to cancel out the loss but we'll see kemp said he caught it and then it was ruled a fumble official review with 216 to go in the second quarter it's been all virginia now we're being told it's going to be ruled an incomplete pass they're just trying to figure out how much time should be on the clock that's the one thing we can count on in our interviews and meetings with bronco mendenhall honesty and straightforwardness yes he'll tell it like it is he said we just barely did it two weeks in two weeks in a row right now based on play in the first half it doesn't appear that they're gonna need a dramatic finish but you never know in the acc and i'm sure that man will make the necessary adjustments at halftime right this is this is a a long time honor review and as they're trying to check where to put it back down but it's on a review that you know you've got a couple seconds here that i'm sure duke is concerned with if they get the football back a chance to go score but here in the thick of a game it's the ball spot is just gonna it's gonna be the difference between a yard or two [Music] after further review the receiver did not complete the process of the catch the airport is an incomplete pass it'll be second down and 10 at the 16 yard line the game clock will start on the snap so virginia actually gained about four yards on the re-spot because they had the ball at the 20. and now it's at the 16 with 216 to go in the quarter and the ninth play of the drive coming up and it appears that the skies are starting to brighten a little bit here in charlottesville virginia we started with bright sunshine a little bit of drizzle in this first half as lauren jabara can attest to down on the sidelines [Music] so they're going to keep the clock at 216 outside of two minutes to go in the quarter on the review four for four in the red zone a field goal and three touchdowns for virginia in this game they came in james 12th in the acc in red zone offense even though they were six of six in the red zone in louisville last weekend so robert and i back in his last two minutes and 16 seconds calling him up trying to get them back into the paint one more time second and ten pressure deflected into the end zone and incomplete looking for thompson dwayne carter was bearing down the quarterback armstrong [Music] a little game up front and taking the long road to get to armstrong but he finally does get there and you don't see that very often thompson even with that cast on sure-handed that one goes through his hands and virginia lucky that one wasn't picked off by the safety three for five on third down this is third and ten just outside of two minutes to go in the half all cavaliers 24 nothing armstrong behind the intended receiver thompson could not haul it in near the three-yard line stinson was defending thompson 99 in orange and now fourth down armstrong puts it a little bit behind him but thompson had a chance to go back and pluck it and couldn't come down with it and upset with himself back-to-back drops both balls in his hands and here comes a field goal try farrell's already made one of the first quarter from 31 yards away this from 34. for farrell knocks it through two for two makes a 31 yarder and that from 34 yards away for farrell [Music] swaying on the hillside [Music] right behind the goal post where farrell just knocked it through from 34 yards away to make it 27-nothing virginia so they convert that interception by devonte cross into three points in the cavaliers that's what they've done in the six game winning streak in the series james they've now forced 27 turnovers against duke in six plus games and again they're working on a six-game winning streak in the series and four in a row at home against duke and somehow holding on to the football themselves the ball has been there have been a lot of interesting moments where it looked like duke was going to get a big turnover but they've all seemed to go either through the hands of the duke blue devils are right back into the hands of the cavaliers what happened to that sunshine you just promised a couple minutes ago well it's bright out but it's raining it's a bright rain yes at least it's not big old fat rain or raining up itty bitty stinging rain all kinds of rain that's the view from scott stadium one of the classic college football venues opened up back in 1931. and now it's probably raining as hard as it has all afternoon long well i'm anxious to see what kind of get after it holmberg and the offense have here three timeouts left let's see if they can march it down and put some points on the board [Applause] our percentage pass over the middle near the 30-yard for the most part today and this defense has been hungry the rant now 10 carries 64 yards and that's coming off of that performance we told you 43 carries the career high last week 152 yards and also james durant is a back who averages over five yards per carry second best in the acc it is not materializing for duke and durant this afternoon the raindrops here in charlottesville wilson's into punt timeout taken by duke 133 on the clock they are rocking on the hillside rain or otherwise smoky mountains and the blue ridge mountains off in the distance as well here in charlottesville in the commonwealth always fun to come to scott stadium tip of the cap to our hard-working production and technical crew so especially in the elements tom if i'm virginia here bronco mendenhall talking it over with his guys duke gets out there and then they use a timeout the last thing that you can afford is for them to sneak one by you here on a fake punt yeah duke doesn't want to miss it and give virginia the short field but they've got one yard to go they called the timeout and now they'll huddle it up to go for it pistol look fourth down blue devils holmberg he's got it across the 35-yard wicks keeps on putting up the big numbers for armstrong six catches for wix this in traffic knocked away from thompson you had stinson and johnson back there defensively for duke and 35 seconds now on the game clock tries to drop it in there for his his big man thompson and thompson can't do much with that left arm and the right ones tangled up down underneath with the defender jalen stinson want a flag but won't get one so trying to keep the heat on here with 35 seconds left in the second and ten maybe even get a field goal out if they can't punch it in one td pass in the game for armstrong he's taking off trying to get by hayward grabs the jersey pulls him down near the 20. shaka hayward that's enough for a first down virginia on the run by armstrong of 10 yards to the 20-yard line [Applause] looks like virginia's taking a time out there james yeah their last one here of the first half good job by armstrong decisive when he has to be i'm going to tuck this one and go and just gets hayward he's fighting hard to try to drop him down but just gets enough trying to get out of bounds there and hayward's effort won't save the first down yardage needed but it will force them to use their final timeout with 23 seconds remaining coastal division champs a couple of years ago 2019 made it all the way to the orange bowl against florida and in that season tom bronco mendenhall loves to point out that they were 500 on the road in the acc and it's one thing that they've preached throughout this off season that was that was all everything meant they talked about it they would they would go and work out in places that were foreign to them and they it was it was it wasn't just something they talked about it was the theme and it was all that mattered was to play better on the road and they're coming off those back-to-back road wins in the acc for the first time since 2011 so it's paying off and continue to play strong here at scott stadium that's for sure wins at miami and at louisville before returning home to charlottesville this one down near the goal line it looked like woods was the receiver his progress was impeded and that ball bounced in the end zone 18 seconds young defending woods you know and again it's just the almost turnovers the almost turnovers for duke and there have been now i would guess over half a dozen looked like jelani woods and armstrong on a different page there on that last play that pass at the eight that's woods this time and he hangs on that's 13 yards first and goal now virginia heck of a job by the umpire mark wilson it's over right at the waist armstrong spike in that one to stop the clock nine seconds to go watch the umpire right there in the middle of your screen mark wilson right between the eyes [Music] armstrong quickly gathering the troops i'm going to spike this and stop the clock and everybody hustles up to the line and here we go with nine seconds left second and goal quick release into the end zone and a oklahoma state told him that he was a blocking fullback in the nfl not so fast been so important in the passing game we're trying to make it interesting anyway and jelani was on his back the ball between his legs able to wrap it back in 15 catch of the season for jelani woods one behind his teammate dean duncabian wicks who has a td catch in the first quarter of 20 yards from brennan armstrong who is now up to 19 touchdown passes on the year right now he is tied with kenny pickett with 19 td passes although pickett plays later against virginia tech [Applause] [Music] whoa [Applause] good job to secure it between his thighs and you know look at long hair fighting again long 6-2 195 but he he looks so much smaller than that even up next to jelani woods and there's the reaction from hey that was almost a smile james yeah not so funny okay sorry oh slow down i'm seeing things you're talking about bronco was smiling last week when they scored with 22 seconds left to his surprise and dismay and then louisville missed that last second field goal james talked about the back-to-back acc road wins first time since 2011 and consecutive road wins for the first time since 2017 when they wanted boise state and at north carolina and virginia's also won eight of its last 11 games overall [Applause] they were hoping for a momentum boost after the last two weeks with close victories by a freebie here holmberg gonna launch it it's down inside the 20 and it's incomplete looked like bobo was the closest receiver for duke yeah but almost got interesting there with eli pankl running over nobody in between it's all orange and blue and smiles in the first half brennan armstrong threw it 36 times completed 21 of them for 296 yards and a couple of tds able to find wicks and woods late in the half for his second touchdown pass and now 19 on the season for armstrong tied for the lead league a league lead rather as he goes to the locker room with his teammates there's lauren jabara you said for today is consistency for long stretches run start running the ball and really work it that way especially with the slick conditions out there and how slippery the ball is going to be so focus on that line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and the run here in the second half well lauren they'll get a chance to get that football to start this second half as they'll receive the opening kick here but a lot of it has to do with that defense of virginia just stoning this offensive line of duke it's one thing to say that hey we're getting pushed around we've got to run the football but you've got to take charge up front like they did a really good job of last week and there you see the results every time they had the football in the first half that missed field goal really kind of set the tone of what was to come for the next two quarters let's see what they told them in the locker room at halftime if they can get it turned back around needless to say a very important series right here for david cutcliff's duke blue devils trying to get a little bit of that feel good back 142 total yards for duke in the first half no return from stinson consider james that coming into this game the blue devils had 2975 total yards of offense in the first six games that they have been limited by the defense of virginia just 142 yards in total by the way that total that were required on the road at louisville the first win in program history at louisville last week they've been owen four and they've now won three of their last four games against the cardinals after scoring a touchdown with 22 seconds left and then louisville missed the field goal past the 45-yard line on the money to starling seven yards blackwell to tackle [Music] amazingly virginia trailed 30 to 13 after the third quarter so they were down by 17 points with virginia's win being down by 17 or more going into the fourth in acc play since 1953. 2 and 532 and one of those wins was virginia last week this is armstrong getting spun down but james coach mendenhall made a point to tell us of that record 2 and 530 for teams trailing by 17 or more in the acc headed to the fourth amazing that is truly amazing at the time the only team that had done it nc state before them and this is the miss from 49 yards away for louisville to finish the ball game and the celebration is on from mendenhall wahoos offense number 31 of the defense those files are offset that's the first unfortunate file for each player to be fourth down september 30th at miami they won 30-28 miami missed a 33-yard field goal as time expired so two straight games with field goals on the last play of the game and both times it's out of your hands well and there's another street that was snapped that was the first they snapped a five-game road losing streak with that win and then the win at louisville was the first time that this program has ever won at louisville boiling through the fake and it limb speedsters on this team but but if if i'm starting an offense one of my first guys i'm picking is billy kemp he's just he's got so much fight to him and so much energy he's fun to watch and he's he's always getting up there around 10 catches a game it seems six catches 65 yards kemp snares that one beyond the 45. and he had to earn james every single one of those against this virginia defense he sure did nine games over 100 yards in his career here's leonard's gonna tuck it and try to get a couple [Music] you know those numbers on mateo durant they're not too shabby but at the same time mick house defense they came in with the game plan of making sure that 21 wasn't going to beat him and they succeeded because he's over on the sidelines right now perhaps done for the day nobody in the acc carried the ball more times than mateo durant to start the afternoon so they knew exactly what they were in for and the cavalier d was ready ignore the stats james they came in at the bottom of the conference in rush defense not today not at all they've only allowed 91 rush yards to duke [Applause] 192 yards season on the staff and former byu assistants and the game plan was almost perfect today having a lot of point and kept matteo durant off the score sheet as a factor on the ground leonard steps up in [Applause] so as we close in on the four-minute threshold and up 48-0 this could be the largest margin of victory in a game between these two rivals since 1990 when virginia won 59 to nothing all the way back in 1990. i was still on campus in 1990 james not the grounds i wasn't here you were wearing orange blue though i was on campus up at syracuse so it's been a while tough day for the blue devils would those have been outgrow days 1990 would that have been an outro type of seems like he was here around there and i'm not sure we'll make sure george welsh could be in the equation as well yeah down to the 15 or so virginia is also looking for its second shutout of the season james we called the william and mary game to start the year that was 43-nothing although duke is driving it into opponent since back in 2008 they beat maryland which is no longer part of the conference if you're just joining us 31-0 the victory over the terrapins for virginia and it was george welsh you were though and it totally disrupted there there was movement on that left that left guard started to move and mirroring him was the defensive lineman who i thought initially might have jumped early devils right on the doorstep and based on that expression james you couldn't tell if it was 48 nothing or three to nothing i mean yeah you know even with the shades off right he had those shades on earlier in the game a little bit brighter to start shades off cap on had some rain in the first half we've had everything today other than snow i guess and now the final minute for coach mendenhall opponent since 2008 for virginia all started with an early missed field goal for duke and then it went downhill from there and virginia led it 34-0 at halftime and never looked back never looked back after that first drive to take their dynasty go ahead throw your wine on it what stained repellent it's also scuff resistant
