hello Nathan Cox and it's home repair and modeling here I am to give you guys a tip about cutting um objects out of sheetrock um whether it be electrical outlets this specific example is going to be with can lights I've got can lights up here in the ceiling uh the sheet rocks hung up in place and now we need to cut out the C lights um so first thing to do is before you put your sheetrock in place you need to measure so you can mark the kind of the center hole of um the object you're going to be cutting out uh so I got the little Mark up here actually got two of them here in the sheetrock above me of what should be right about the center of the can light uh and then um now this is I guess they uh the more professional way of doing it you can of course measure it out uh mark it on the sheetrock and then cut it out with a handsaw and then apply sheetrock over it um and you know if you get good measure me you can get a pretty good clean mark But if you want to know how the the guys who hang it all the time how they get that you know what looks like they punched it out from the factory as they installed it this is how they do it this is a called a Roto Zip uh it's a spiral um cutting tool there's a couple other brands out there but not many really that make this um what it is is it just it's a tool just spins the bit real quick and they say you can do a bunch of other things cut through wood and this and that he kind of do but it it's really it's really manufactured for for cutting the drywall that's it's one area that it shines at and when you buy the uh the dry wall tips the trick is is there's two different tips for doing the drywall this one here if you can see has a smooth end uh this is what they call a tracing bit this is how you get that real clean cut around the uh the drywall whatever you're doing it's cuz this won't cut it it goes up this will rub against the uh outside edge of whatever you're cutting in and um like I said that's how you get the real professional Edge and another tip on this is when you screw it in place whether it's on the ceiling or on the wall don't screw close to what you're what you're going to cut out if the screws are close to what you cut out it's putting a lot of pressure against it so as you start to make the cut before you finish it the sheetrock will end up cracking uh now I've got this screwed off all the way around the perimeter the can lights are basically right in the middle so that should be just about right but I have no the screws in there um this little tool is kind of loud and Dusty so do this first and I'll show you how we do this [Music] [Music] [Music] w okay like I said it's dusty and loud you know but there you go there's a perfect circle cut out for the can light when it comes to finishing it if you take your time you got to be careful because this being a spiral tool sometimes it want to take off on its own so you got to make sure that you're staying against the edge of what you're cutting in uh when it comes to finishing it uh it's very clean there's going to be no touchup around that fixture it's ready it's ready so if you like this tip please give me a thumbs up uh subscribe to my channel I'll have a link to my Facebook page down below where you can get even more information about me uh thank you until next time this is Nathan Cox
