[Music] hey what's up youtube we're back with another patreon pick and this one is for zapagor waikato and man dude i hope i am not butchering your name because i get so many fancy names that are requesting songs and um yeah i mean obviously no offense intended and i hope i got that close to right but this one is uh it's mike portnoy ex theater drummer and yeah i mean i'm i've got to say i've got to say i'm really surprised and curious as to why people aren't requesting the super drummers is it because we know they're incredible um and maybe you know that i know that they're incredible i don't know i don't know what it is but mike portnoy you know he's cover of modern drama kind of material yeah it does surprise me i mean no one has requested vinnie yet i don't think anyone's requested dave weckel or um i mean okay we've had a few of the super drummers like we've had our gavin harrison's and eloy casa grande we've had a couple not as many as i would have expected but um hey um you don't have to be a super drummer to be in ridiculously impressive drummer and i don't even know where i just came up with that genre or that level of dramas that i consider a super drummer but i think other other experienced drummers out there will know uh sort of that caliber i'm talking about but anyway if you're not familiar with mike portnoy strap in because he's quite something um zappaguard this one's for you buddy and i hope you're doing well out there man and let's get into it not overly familiar with mike portney i know his i know he's an absolute legend [Music] he's got a bit of a sense of humor about him doesn't he it's having fun in the studio [Music] i was nose flute on this track [Music] it's a big plot on [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] he's uh he's uh in time he's in the pocket there isn't he [Music] damn there is just no question no hesitation uh and no doubt about his subdivisions he is so clear i had a great quote i heard the other day clarity is the dna of mastery clarity is the dna of mastery listen to how clear his subdivision his time his feel and how consistent and perfect everything he's playing here is hey that sound is not for everybody some people like a bit more grease some people like things a little bit more dirty but you got to admire it [Music] it's like quite a small snare 13 perhaps tell me [Music] i quite like this i haven't listened to i don't even know if i've ever listened to dream theater it's not really in my wheelhouse i really like this i kind of makes me feel like i want to check it on my phone and go running with it this is good [Music] crispy [Music] and i'm just going to pause it there sorry to be the pause at every five seconds guy just to make an observation it looks like he's playing with his left stick backwards with the butt end of the stick and not the tip this comes up a lot with students and a lot with non-drummers hey man you're playing with the wrong side of the stick hey look at that guy's uh he's playing with the wrong wrong end of the sticks um it sounds better especially on your left hand the hand that's playing the snare to get a really fat sound on the center and get a bit more weight into the snare it just it sounds nice and it feels really nice it actually feels really comfortable as well playing two and four kind of music um just gripping the stick um from the tip ended it's a lot more comfortable much better for rim clicks i mean if you'd heard his rim clicks just before they're really crisp and really nice a really good tip for anyone beginning out there on the drums um try rim clicks with the stick backwards or just play the whole time with your left hand stick back to front let's go back a little bit let's have a listen how crisp these clip rim clicks get more weight more weight into the click [Music] after all that he's probably not playing it back to firm but it looks like it [Music] take me as i am [Music] [Music] metallica vibe there [Music] feels like [Music] is [Music] [Applause] open minds will decide [Music] [Music] i know hey let's pack that up what was that flipping it around mid mid uh backbeat [Music] you know what it is no more room clicks i bet you no more room clicks on the song he just went back to tip on the um on the heads [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hmm oh no hey it went back i think it's just a habit maybe just likes doing that [Music] or maybe he wants a different sound [Applause] [Music] [Music] this is good [Music] don't just go and do that let's hear it again [Music] those who understand you know what i'm really enjoying about this i'm hoping this is the last time i pause this maybe i've had too much coffee i'm not sure i'm really enjoying how he's playing a lot he's doing a vinnie he's playing a lot of notes but it's not detracting from the music like vinnie so i mean it takes a very special drama to get away with this i mean well most of us we're just going to sound really sloppy if we went for all this but someone like mike portnoy it doesn't sound sloppy at all and it's not show-offy at all it's completely necessary and it's adding to the music and not just like hey look at look at me i'm the drummer look how cool i am and fast i am it's it's completely within the uh within the confines of the music and it sounds great i know [Music] album bring it on mike bring it home baby [Music] no [Music] i filmed himself there with a little remote well uh that was uh that was something i enjoyed musically i mean obviously it's mike portnoy you know it's gonna be ridiculously incredible drumming i'm surprised how much i enjoyed the music that was really good um often you know some of the fusiony crazy stuff that real outlet music for musicians can be
