Dream Big - Part One - Dreaming Big

[Music] [Music] all right what's up everybody welcome to part one of this brand new series want to say hello to all of our campuses to all of you who are joining us live online to all the correctional facilities across the state to the overflow here at olson farms come on church let's put our hands together welcome each other today so great to have you at church go ahead and grab something to take some notes with if you haven't already i'm excited about this brand new series because we are in a pivotal season in the world around us for our country and for the world and i believe as i've said many times before that this could and should be the church's finest hour and i believe it's time for us to dream big here's the theme verse for our series ephesians chapter 3 and verse 20 it says now all glory to god who is able through his mighty power that's at work within us to accomplish read it with me infinitely more than we might ask or think come on read it again infinitely more than we might ask or think read it one more time infinitely more than we might ask or think i want you to know that you serve a god of infinitely more and i think it's a tragedy in modern day america that we have christians living natural lives while serving a supernatural god i think we should see more i think we should see more things come to pass i think we should see more miracles i think we should see more divine intervention we are not serving an ordinary god so we should not be living ordinary lives amen everybody we should be seeing the supernatural we should see god move thank you to all 12 of you that are excited about that you serve a god who is infinitely more than everything that you could ever ask think or imagine so i think it's time for us to dream a little bit bigger in fact let me put it to you this way if your dream isn't intimidating to you it's insulting to god because you serve a god that can do anything in this life he does not know the word impossible and yet so many times we pray these safe little prayers and we ask for these safe little things and i think we live in a culture today even as americans and even as christians who are obsessed with comfort and safety and convenience and that's not the life that god's called us to live god has called us to a life that's infinitely more than anything that you could dream on your wildest day the biggest thing that you could come up with god says you're just barely getting started in fact i think at the end of your life you should look back and say i can't even imagine that god could have done that with me i couldn't even imagine that god would allow me to touch that many people and to give that much away and to see so many souls saved and to see so many ministries saved and see so many companies started i just i just can't even believe it in fact i honestly believe that as you pursue your dream the world should kind of look at you from time to time and be like man if god doesn't show up that's going to be a mess you should have a few of those moments that you're like is it are we crazy have i done something crazy because if you don't get to that place then you're not really leaving god a lot of room to operate in your life and over the next three weeks i'm gonna lead you uh through a series that i pray helps us to dream bigger and ask god for bigger things the bible says that the nations would be our inheritance it's time for us to step up and be the body of christ that god's called us to be to lead with authority to see victory to watch god move in a supernatural way so today we're gonna kick it off in second kings chapter three there's a story there that i absolutely love in fact i brought it to our church three different times over the ten years that we've been a church which doesn't sound like much but it is a lot and i'm excited to revisit it today let me set the stage for you and then we'll jump into the study there are three different kings that are going up against one country and so you have three countries versus one country two of the countries of the three that are aligned are not serving god at all but one follows the lord the three of them get together and none of them really seek god at the beginning of it because they kind of feel like they've got it all together things are fine we're going to be great and then they run into some trouble and they end up turning to god in second kings chapter 3 we're going to pick the story up in verse 9 the king of israel set out with the king of judah and the king of edom these are the three guys but after a round about march of seven days the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals that were with them so they had a really bad strategy they had really bad supplies no real plan and they get out in the middle of nowhere and they find themselves in some trouble verse 10 what exclaimed the king of israel y'all know you should read your bible with a little bit of punctuation okay i know most of you read it to fall asleep but if you'll read it with more interest it'll be more interesting what exclaim the king of israel has the lord called the three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of moab and so jehoshaphat he's the one guy that served the lord he said is there not a prophet of the lord here through whom we can inquire of the lord now that we're in trouble let's turn to god sounds like our country it says an officer of the king of israel answered elisha son of shafad is here he used to pour water on the hands of elijah so we have two really powerful old testament prophets that come into play here elijah and elisha we're getting more of that in a minute jehoshaphat said the word of the lord is with him so the king of israel and jehoshaphat and the king of edom went down to him so again this kind of reflects the position that americans find themselves in often where we live our normal cushy lives we kind of execute our own plans and as things go well we just kind of don't concern ourselves with pursuing the lord or his presence or power or even direction for our lives but then all of a sudden a crisis hits famine comes recession hits we have some type of pandemic come along and everybody turns to god let's see what god has to say about this let's turn to the lord and see if he'll be the one who will rescue us and i want you to know that if that's why you're here it can be an unbelievable blessing in your life in fact your greatest need becomes a blessing when it drives you to depend on god and so sometimes god will allow us to get into situations i don't think he causes pain or tragedy or certainly sickness you can look at scripture and see that god is good and the devil's bad there's no doubt about that but sometimes god will allow us to get into situations that cause us to need him that make us pick our heads up from the normal ritual of everyday life and say you know our plan isn't working we're gonna have to find a better plan and when we come to god we need to be reminded of the fact that he always does have a plan for our lives jeremiah 29 11 you've probably heard it before it says i know the plans i have for you declares the lord to prosper you and not to harm you plans to give you hope and a future i want you to know god has an amazing plan for your life and most of us during this season of life are probably asking the question god what's that plan am i really headed down the right path i know we've been in a season of evaluation as a family i pray you are as well what do we value how much do we really want to do these things and how much stock do we put in that sport and how much is that really how much does that really matter to us and how much are we investing financially and emotionally into these things that maybe aren't bringing that great of a return the world is kind of reevaluating our lives we need to do the same as the body of christ but it should turn us to god to say lord i know that you have a plan for my life but what is it and when we do that i promise you he will challenge you to think bigger and to dream bigger than you've ever dreamed before because we serve a god that can do infinitely more than we could ever ask think or imagine time for us to dream big so today i want to talk to you about this condition that we find ourselves in very much like the nation of israel in this story and we're going to talk about some things that happen with our dreams in fact i'm going to give you three points about dreams today number one jot it down if you're taking notes dreams are often birthed in adversity now it doesn't mean that you have the dream some of you are having the dream for the first time others of you had the dream years ago and this is the season where you're being squeezed in fact have you noticed that everyone and everything in the world is being squeezed right now organizations are being squeezed people are being squeezed churches are being squeezed and you find out a lot about people when they're squeezed because we can all hide a bunch of stuff but when you squeeze us what's inside comes out all of a sudden we have to kind of reevaluate our relationships the path for our life our investments the things that we're doing and i think we've lived even as american christians in a culture that's obsessed like i said with comfort and safety and convenience it's just not the life that god's called us to but it's the life that we pursue and it bleeds into our spiritual lives if you think about it oftentimes we pray prayers like god would you keep me from all trouble would you protect me from all harm and i'm not saying that's the wrong prayer to pray i'm just saying oftentimes we're praying away the very thing that god wants to use to bring about the dream that we're asking god for in our lives too many times we're praying god would you help me launch this company would you help me get married would you help me do this thing or take a step in my business or help my kids and then we walk through tragedy that would do that very thing and we try and pray it away but the bible says in james chapter 1 and verse 2 consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds clearly james had a totally different perspective of life than all of us do he says consider it pure joy when your life feels like you're in trouble consider it pure joy when there's a crisis happening in the world around you because something good is about to happen now i've crossfitted now for many years it's my uh it's my hobby of choice if you will i love i've always loved fitness but i really enjoy crossfit because it forces me to do cardio which has always been punishment in life for the sport that i was playing and so i'll never get on a treadmill or a stairmaster ever in my entire life so the idea of running or anything like that i would never do it so crossfit combines all of that but the thing i love the most about crossfit is i feel like i'm just about to die every moment of my life because i'm always so sore i can't even tell am i injured or am i sore but you're probably thinking is crazy but i love it i get nervous when i'm not sore in every part of my body you know why because when you're sore it means that your muscles were torn which is actually sounds like a bad thing but it's a good thing because when your muscles tear lactic acid is released in your body which is what creates the soreness but it means that something is building back stronger and better and so i love being sore because it means i'm making progress and i think too many of us don't like the feeling of that so we try to avoid pain at all costs and it's actually the very thing that would bring about the results that we're praying for and so we need to actually pray god i'm a little bit too comfortable god i don't have enough trials i don't have enough adversities i don't feel like i'm being tested i don't feel like i'm going to get a chance to grow because things are too easy in life and i just want you to know god has given us this season as a blessing so that you and i can grow so we can be who god's called us to be and it would change our perspective if we got to the place that we were praying prayers like lord i don't have any problems in my life i need you to send me some because i don't want to get complacent i don't want to get soft i don't want life to get easy i want to stay sore i want to live in pain because it means i'm making progress and i want you to know that the same spirit that formed the universe just by speaking a word the bible says lives on the inside of you so the creative force that created everything about the universe in a matter of moments lives on the inside of you so why shouldn't christians be the most creative entrepreneurial insightful people on the planet you should be if we would channel the presence and the power of the holy spirit why because god wants to position us so that we can make a difference in the world around us you know there's a verse that says the wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous y'all know that that verse i don't know if you know that but there's a verse that says that i don't have it on the screen but i want you to know that verse is in the bible first of all and second of all economically it's proven that wealth transfers during recessions so i just want you to know if you'll have ears to hear the holy spirit this is the moment you've been waiting your entire life for this is the opportunity that you've been asking god for to take a step in your company to launch that new vision to launch that new ministry to do whatever god's put in your heart this is a season of change in fact let me prove it to you do you know that general motors was founded in 1908 in the middle of a recession hewlett-packard 1939 in the middle of the great depression burger kings come on we can go for whoppers right after this service i am hungry for one right now 1953 during a recession microsoft 1975 during recession they might start making vaccines it'll be great that's wrong i'm sorry it's wrong 2008 to 2010 the last recession groupon instagram uber pinterest square airbnb none of those companies existed until the last recession these are things that we use on a daily basis as americans you know that you could be the founder of the next great corporation that we are talking about five ten years from now because god could put that dream inside of your heart and you can see that thing come to pass if you just shift your perspective but you gotta shift your perspective because too many of us want comfort and convenience and safety i'm reminded of david the shepherd boy if you don't know the story david was one of many brothers and the prophet comes to his house to his father jesse and says one of your sons is going to be the next king over israel and they didn't even think enough of david to bring him in from the fields he was a shepherd boy so he goes through all the brothers and the prophet says man none of these are the guys they're all good-looking guys and seem capable but they're just nothing so they bring in david well we got one more go get go get the kid out in the fields they bring in little david and he's like you're the one he anoints him as the next king over israel the dream is birthed inside of david's heart but he doesn't take a step onto the national stage he goes back out into the fields to watch the sheep completely forgotten his life seems like it's in this holding pattern on the backside of the hill as he learns all these amazing godly principles of fighting the lion and the bear in his private life so he's ready when the national stage comes but one day all of a sudden something like a pandemic hits his nation and his name is goliath he's a giant that nobody can defeat and david almost stumbles into the situation just by visiting his friend his brothers and seeing this giant and saying i've killed lions and bears i can take this dude out and so this massive national problem that's got his whole country brought to a halt is the opportunity that david needed to go from obscurity to prominence to go from a nobody on the backside of a hill to begin to step into his destiny as the next king over israel it's all because of the giant and too many of us are asking that god would never send goliath we need to start praying that goliath would come faster because it's the problem that catapults you to your destiny it's that challenge that comes that brings you to the place god's called you to be and david said it this way in psalm 18 in my distress i called to the lord why because your greatest need becomes a blessing when it drives you to depend on god in this season we all need to be on our knees saying god what's next for my life what dream do you have for me what thing are you asking me to accomplish and that's what happened for these three guys these three kings thought they had a decent plan didn't need god found themselves in trouble and so they go to the prophet back to our story in verse 13 elisha says to the king of israel why do you want to involve me go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother which i love this because this is a pastor who talks trash i don't know if you knew this was in the bible your bible is very interesting you should read it sometime his mentor was elijah we mentioned him a moment ago he was a huge trash talker he called fire down from heaven as one of one prophet of the lord while there were 350 prophets of baal he's way outnumbered in a completely godless culture and situation and he calls fire down from heaven to consume this sacrifice but in the process he talks trash the entire time about baal and i love it it's a fantastic story we don't have time to go into it so here is elisha now just doing what his mentor taught him to do this is the first your mama why don't you go find your mama's god right there in the bible your mama got somebody to talk to why don't you pray your mama's prophets he's a little salty in fact if you read one chapter before this he was like just anointed but the bible tells us he was bald and he was headed up uh to go to bethel to go to the house of the lord and there were these teenagers making fun of come on baldy why don't you go on up to church baldi and he looked back at them and called these bears out of the wilderness and the bible says it mauled 42 of them so you better be careful what you say about your pastor's hair that's all i'm saying so so elisha's got a little bit of an attitude he's he's a trash talker great hero of mine fantastic guy and this is what he says in verse 15 bring me a harpist again this is like an unbelievable story there are three armies in the middle of the desert they're dying of thirst their animals are about to physically die because they don't have water they've come to the prophet and humbled themselves and they're like can you just give us a word from heaven can you just tell us what to do and he was like sure i'm gonna need a harp well you know there wasn't a harpist in the army come on somebody they had to go home to get him no offense to the worship team and then in my mind i don't know what harps looked like back then but they're pretty big so they now just have this awkward like did you play golf the other day like i don't know what they talked about for hours maybe days while somebody went to find a harp and wheel this thing out in the middle of the desert because diva pastor is like look i'll hear from god but first i need some pad y'all gotta play the keys you know get me an organ give me something make real sweet music the reason why i'm taking time to say this is because we have keys come out at the end of every service and it's not because that signals the hey you grab the kids and i'll grab the car and we'll meet you in the parking lot he's telling you thank god this is almost done that's not what that's for the keys actually bring in god's presence worship brings us into the presence of god the bible says enter his gates with thanksgiving enter to his courts with praise when you need a word from god you need the presence of god and elisha knew that these guys needed a word and he was like i can give you a word but we need the presence and that's why church is so important that's why it's so vital that we gather together physically because god comes in a supernatural way his presence is here and you should leave here every single week with a word from god because his presence and his power is here and as we worship and lift up the name of jesus it's like bringing a harpist so they bring in this harpist and the bible says then it happened the spirit of the lord hit elisha and he said this is what the lord says this is the word that you need to hear make this valley full of ditches which had to have been a frustrating word because they're like i feel like the word ought to be rain shall cometh soon because we need water bro we don't need holes did you miss here what we're asking for and as an indiana boy having dug a few holes in our backyard i can only imagine how frustrating that was in the midst of a drought in the desert to find shovels and then dig ditches they are thirsty and they are tired physical labor is probably the last thing they were trying to do but here's the point number two dreams require sweat equity some of you have a dream in your heart but you got to get it in gear if you're going to see it come to pass there's some things that we have to do god doesn't just send the rain god says all right why don't you dig a ditch why don't you grab a shovel why don't you put some sweat equity into this and that's really what faith is all about james chapter 2 says it this way faith by itself if it doesn't have any action is dead it doesn't exist it's worthless someone will say you have faith and i have deeds but james taunts them almost and says show me your faith without deeds like i'd love to see it but i'll show you my faith by what i do i think it's time for the body of christ to actually be a christian not just profess christianity show up to church on the weekend but actually live this thing out in every area of our lives it should have an impact our following of christ should have an impact on everything that we do from how we treat our families how we handle our money to how we handle ourselves at work in every area of life it should impact our lives and so faith really isn't faith until it moves from ideology to methodology it's not just something we believe it's how we live and so the lord is saying i'm going to give you a chance to prove that you actually want my solution because god didn't need ditches to bring him water but oftentimes he'll give us opportunities to take steps of faith so that our hearts are in it in fact i wonder how many of us are waiting on god while god is waiting on you how many of us are like just waiting on the lord pastor just waiting on the lord praise the lord i have no i haven't done it yet but i'm just waiting on the lord praise the lord i'm just waiting on the lord we're like uncle eddie just waiting on a management position 35 years out of work just waiting on the lord you'll be waiting on the lord your whole life you know why because faith requires activity faith requires action god's not going to do a thing until you take a step it's the steps that we take to give god something to bless too many of us are waiting for god to make the move first that's why i love noah hebrews chapter 11 it says by faith when noah warned about things not yet seen in holy fear built an ark and he saved his family here's the thing i love about noah he had never seen rain before it had never rained in the history of the world water came up from the ground and watered all the plants there was no such thing as rain and so it was something that had never been seen and some of you god is putting a dream in your heart that nobody has ever seen before it's never been done before and you're thinking i don't know if that's possible and i don't know exactly what step to take and you're allowing that to hang you up because you're saying well it's never been done before it's never been seen before well noah could have been sitting there while the rain is falling killing his family going praise the lord i'm just waiting on the lord someday he's going to send me an army someday a boat's going to show up and we're going to get in it praise the lord it's just going to be great we're going to save the family no the bible says that he had to in the middle of the desert gather together a bunch of wood and build something he'd never seen before to overcome something he'd never experienced before that's a life of faith by definition all of it is unseen and we just have to take steps to do what god has called us to do and honestly that's what the lord is doing with our church i'm so proud if you saw on instagram we've actually created now a feeding organization called feed your neighbor praise the lord for the opportunity to do that isn't that amazing it's yours you guys made that happen because we were sitting in our executive offices at the beginning of the coronavirus and we said as this pandemic strikes we're going to go into some type of recession we don't know how bad it's going to be but the reality is our number one goal is to meet people's spiritual needs but we cannot meet the spiritual need if we do not meet the physical need because it's really hard to tell hungry people about jesus when you have the power to feed them but are not doing it and so we're going to meet the physical need while we meet the spiritual need because i also want to tell you that social justice without spiritual justice is not justice we can feed a bunch of people and send them to hell and god will not be proud of us we're not here to do good things we're here to do god's things we're trying to get people to heaven not make them more comfortable and so he said we got to feed as many people as we can while people are hurting so that we have the opportunity to tell them about jesus that was our only heart we weren't like let's start one of the largest feeding organizations in all of indiana we never said that we just said let's do what god's called us to do and we just took what food we could buy with the money that we had and we started feeding people and today you have now fed over 480 000 pounds of food in our community and we are just getting started praise god but we all always have to take steps of faith because god will always send the water but we have to be faithful to dig the ditch we got to do the hard work of following what god has asked us to do and so many of you are praying for god to do some things in your life but you're not walking out the steps that god's asked you to take so you're praying god i so desperately ask that my children would come to faith in christ in this season but you're still taking them to sporting events on the weekends and not bringing them to church some of you are praying god i desperately need you to touch my finances turn it all around but you're not tithing and you're saying i'll tithe when i can afford to tithe that's not how the tithe works you give him the first 10 of your income trusting that he will bless the rest acknowledging that none of what i have is my own all of this comes from god and if i give him the first i acknowledge that he not me is my source and if he's my source he'll provide for everything else see we want god to always take the first step [Applause] so we say god i want you to give me a promotion i want you to give me that company i've always dreamed of but i'm still going to talk bad about my boss and i'm not going to show up on time at the job i have and i'm going to spread gossip amongst the staff and have a bad attitude every day because i could do it better well god will never bless you with your own company some of you say i would love to be married brush your teeth sell your playstation move out of your mom's basement get a job iron your shirt go to church and ask a girl out you got to dig some ditches bro verse 17. for this is what the lord says this is elisha you will see neither wind nor rain yet this valley will be filled with water and you and your cattle and your animals they will all drink number three jot it down as we close dreams are fulfilled unconventionally i need you to hear that because god's ways are not your ways if we go back to verse 17 it says you're not going to see the things that you expect to see when we think of water we think wind is going to roll in we'll see the clouds coming the rain will fall and then we'll have water and they're going to fill up the ditches because that's what we think god told us to dig a ditch so this must be what god is doing but we have to get to the place that we resign ourselves to the fact that we are not god and you have to ask yourself this question is my faith based on what i believe or what i can see because if you're living with a faith based on what you can see in the world around you your faith will be shipwrecked because god's ways are not your ways what god does in your life will never follow the path that you expect it to follow you know what i found in life is that when my desire is different than god's desire it's so easy for me to die to myself and follow him but when my desire is the same as god's desire it's so hard for me to die to my desire into my ways so i can have gods so too many times when the destination seems the same but the process is drastically different we want god to do it our way and when he doesn't our faith gets shipwrecked i think of joseph in the old testament genesis chapter 50. he had a dream of being in leadership he was the youngest brother and as the baby of the family he thought everybody would always celebrate everything he always did which is not true and so he told his brothers his dream hey guess what one day all of you are going to serve me isn't that awesome guys and they weren't like praise the lord joseph how can we bow down to you now you know the bible says they got jealous of him and they betrayed him they threw him in a pit and then they sold him into slavery but joseph wasn't moved by what he saw he was moved by what he believed and so he kept his heart right and he served in potiphar's house worked his way all the way up to second in command until potiphar's wife tried to sleep with him he refused her and ran from the scene but yet was wrongfully accused thrown into prison you got to believe at some point in prison joseph wasn't like man i'm one more betrayal from being right where i want to be praise the lord i got everything going my way right now i feel like i'm going to be in charge one day but i'm right where i need to be in jail nobody's ever thought that god is me positioned correctly behind bars and yet joseph kept his heart right one day he had the opportunity to stand before pharaoh and interpret his dream and he became second in command of the most powerful country in the world there was a moment that his brothers came and his dream was fulfilled as they bowed down before him because everybody was in famine and i want you to hear this in genesis chapter 50 one of my favorite verses in the bible joseph says to his brothers you intended to harm me and i think you need to be okay with saying that there are people out to get you the devil's trying to destroy you there are people trying to hurt you they are trying to betray you you don't have to act like it's all good because it's not they tried to harm him but god and i just need you to know that there is a bug god moment in every one of our lives that it doesn't matter what the devil's trying to do to you it doesn't matter how he's trying to take you out it doesn't matter what people are saying about you god has a plan for your life and he always inserts himself but god intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done the saving of many lives don't be moved by what you see be moved by what you believe because god's plan will never follow the path that you expected to don't let your faith get shipwrecked on circumstances god's got a great dream for your life and it's infinitely more than you could ask or imagine because we go back to our text one more time verse 18. he reminds us this beautiful thought this is an easy thing in the eyes of the lord you know that thing that you think is impossible that one big thing that you're praying for the bible says god's like that's easy oh and i'll answer all your other prayers as well i'll go ahead and deliver moab into your hands because i'm a god that does infinitely more than you could ever ask think or imagine because god's bigger than you could ever think god's more powerful than you could ever dream he's got a better plan than you could ever craft for yourself and if you just trust him i promise you he'll do more with your life than you would ever dream possible church it's time for us to dream big this should be the church's finest hour so what ditch do you need to dig but life is god called you to live let's put our faith not on what we see but what we believe i promise you your best days are ahead with every head bowed in every eye closed i want to pray that god would touch the dream that he's put inside of your heart today that he would give you a dream that intimidates you that almost scares you when you think about it because it's so much bigger than you could ever do on your own but first i know that those of you are here here at olson farms or at one of our campuses or streaming sites or maybe in a correctional facility today and you're far from god maybe this tragedy this crisis this moment just like these three kings has brought you to the place of seeking god what is what does god say about my life i want you to know it doesn't matter who you are doesn't matter what you've done doesn't matter how old you are god still has an amazing plan for you it can be yours today if you'll just surrender to him i want to take a moment to help you do that as no one is looking around i want to pray a simple prayer with you before we go i'm not going to make you stand i'm not going to make you come down front not trying to embarrass you there are plenty of opportunities for you to be public with your faith this moment is between you and god if that's you today say dave i'm off track i've been living for my own dream i've been kind of executing my own plan and now i'm in a season where i'm realizing it's not working out i need jesus if that's you let's pray together with no one looking around i'm gonna ask you to do one thing and that's just simply lift your hand up high and say dave would you count me in on this prayer i need jesus come on right now just put your hand up high all of our campuses be bold hold it up for just a moment great job great job it's awesome yeah yeah great job got you got you all over this place that's so amazing all of our campuses you can put your hands down here's what we'll do i'm going to lead you in a very simple prayer you can pray this quietly in your heart because it's between you and god he'll hear you you just need to mean it just say lord jesus forgive me today i repent of all my sin [Music] i surrender to you to your plan to your will help me to live the dream that you have for me then just whisper to heaven just tell him today i give you my life come on just tell him that today i give you my life in jesus name i pray father i thank you for every person here that there's greatness in this church there's greatness in the body of christ lord i pray that this pivotal moment in american history would be the moment that the church steps up to be the church you've called us to be god i pray that you would help us to pray bigger prayers and dream bigger dreams god we thank you today that we serve a god who can do infinitely more than we could ever ask or think so i pray that you would raise the level of our dreaming raise the level of our thinking god i
