North Carolina quarterback Drake May has had quite the draft process some people think he will be a great quarterback in the NFL While others think he will be the next disappointing North Carolina quarterback for the crowd that thinks Drake will be a great player they'll point to the insanely High highs that not many NFL quarterbacks can achieve while the other part of the NFL draft community that thinks Drake May will be a disappointing player will point to almost routine plays that he misses and point to bad interceptions like this one against Minnesota for example there's no excuse for this play as Drake throws it directly to the defensive player but not just within this Minnesota game but all year there were insanely High highs from May that makes you think he will be a future star in the NFL and when you have as many high highs as Drake May does followed by uncharacteristically low lows for a prospect of this magnitude well it's simple Drake May's tape is like riding a roller coaster but which player will we get at the end NL level well we're going to dive into the tape and break everything down in today's video meaning The Good the Bad and the Ugly from Drake may now let's begin despite a rather well bad statline of 16 of 36 for 209 yards and one touchdown and one interception there were a few big throws within the Clemson game the first was on Fourth and six just two minutes into the game Clemson is running cover one rat and Drake goes for the home run and completes a pass pass for 43 yards to fellow 2024 draft prospect TZ Walker however this wasn't on a standard College Corner this was on first round Prospect Nate Wiggins and Nate played this route as well as you can he seized by tz's Third Step that it's a go route and there's no time for messing around on a go route and Nate also uses the boundary very well here to his advantage and uses it as a second Defender but TZ flat out beats him and Drake tosses into dime where only his guy can get the footb ball Nate ran a sub 4340 at the combine and this was absolutely a big time throw by Drake when you factor everything in on this play but for as good as that play was the interception on the final offensive play of the game for North Carolina was pretty bad they were down 11 with 2 and 1/2 minutes left in the game with UNCC running mirrored curl routes and Drake really doesn't go through a progression here at all at this point in the game Clemson doesn't want to give up any big plays so you can see how far off their guys are playing at the line of scrimmage and Drake more or less takes the snap drops back and fires again to TZ Walker this time with Nate reading the play and securing a game ceiling interception when you slow this down frame by frame you can see that as Drake is coming to the top of his dropb back Nate is already breaking on the ball and he knows he has an interception if he can secure the catch which he does and ultimately gives Clemson the win the One Touch touchdown Drake through in this game was in the first quarter and it's one of the best plays you'll see whether it's from Drake or whether it's from one of the best quarterbacks in today's NFL North Carolina is running a dino concept where the receiver at the bottom of the screen is running a deep over or do route and the receiver at the top is running a deep post Clemson is sending a blitz and while Drake is under pressure he is keeping his eyes down the field and sees Nate Wiggins go with the Deep post route and with Wiggins going on the Deep post he knows if his guy can beat the safety on the do route he has a big play but do you understand how insane this throw is from the 42 yd line with the receiver on the 16 yd line to throw it to the pylon and have him run under the ball and make a play there's not many quarterbacks in today's NFL that can recognize the corner going with the number one at the top of the screen realize he has a guy open downfield and then have the physical ability to make this play oh and this was while a Clemson Defender was practically coming untouched for a free shot at May yes there's times on tape where may telegraphs his throws and there's times where he misses throws due to poor footwork but due to the insane High highs there are with him this is a big reason why I am such a supporter of Drake focus on what a player can do versus what he cannot do is a big thing in the NFL draft process and there's maybe 10 guys on the plan planet that can make a play like this and if you have a guy who can do this then it's on you as an NFL coaching staff to be able to maximize what that player can do to get the absolute most out of them on every single Sunday back down the down part of the roller coaster and we have a first down with four minutes to play in the first half with the game tied at seven this pass is incomplete but the receiver was NFL open and the frustrating thing about this play was Drake has to lead his guy more to the sideline Drake has to lead him outside and he has to lead him to where he can catch this in stride and get his foot in and get a first down for UNC one foot in college two feet in the NFL for anyone wondering but inexplicably he throws the ball inside and the corner gets a free hard hit on the receiver that should have never happened whether Drake's receivers in the NFL or Terry McClaren Jan doson or guys like Hendrick Bourne and pop Douglas they're not going to like taking hits like this they're not going to like taking hits on simple passes that every starting quarterback in the NFL should be able to make and if this seems harsh for ball placement being a little bit off well if coverage were tight from the beginning as the corner took a few steps back as the ball was getting snapped this little bit of inaccuracy is a difference between a first down to move the sticks and a pick six at the NFL level these four throws from the Clemson game really highlight the ups and downs of what it's like at times with Drake May one of my favorite plays from Drake's tape this past year was against Minnesota where Drake baited the DB to come down and take the chese which he did and Drake proceeds to rip a bullet of a throw to where only his guy can get the football Minnesota comes out in a quarters look and the safety on the field side comes down to take the do route while the number one receiver counting from the outside runs a deep post and because of the angle the receiver is running combined with no help over the top for the DB defending the Deep post this is as free of a shot as you're ever going to have you can see from the front angle that Drake holds everyone on the boundary side in place knowing the DB on the field side has no help and in the absolute worst case he can throw it short to his receiver because there's no way the DB can get between the receiver and the football this was an example of using eye manipulation for a big gain and this is an NFL play from the start Drake knew where he was going and kept the DBS in place and because he has a rocket of an arm at 64230 he came back to the Deep post and fired a bullet into his receiver's arms for a big gain for the Tar Heels now we showed the interception against Minnesota in the intro of the video and we'll break it down more here this was one of the silliest interceptions you'll see any Collegiate quarterback throw there's plenty of times on tape where Drake throws the ball with touch but unfortunately this was not one of them it was a bad play yes but I don't think this is a huge huge negative in the the draft profile because of how fixable this mistake is this isn't Drake simply not having the physical ability to push the ball down the field at the NFL level which is a question for some prospects by the way this was a matter of him simply not seeing the defensive player he knew what he did as soon as the play was over and that was that but a play to show the type of touch May has comes from the North Carolina State game and what was overall a not very good game as he threw two and interceptions in this game but from the moment the ball was snapped you see Drake identify the Blitz and he knows he's going to take a shot after the ball is snapped so what does he do he steps up into the pocket while knowing he's about to get drilled layers a beauty of a ball in the middle of the field and his guy makes the play there's a million things that can go wrong if the timing of this play is a tenth of a second off Drake could get hit in the back as the ball is being thrown which would Pop the ball right up in the air for an easy interception or even a strip sack I mean hell Anything could happen here to be able to have this kind of touch and take this type of fit in the final game of your collegiate career says a lot about Drake I'm not a big fan of forcing NFL comps just to force them but my comp for Drake May is a blend of Justin Herbert and Josh Allen more so leaning to Herbert of course but I do think Drake is a blend of the two this throw against NC State reminded me of one of the best touchdowns Justin Herbert threw in his career back in 2021 against the Giants where Herbert knows he's about to get drilled and throws a deep shot for a touchdown and what was one of the best throws from That season and like Herbert there's times on tape where May misses throws here and there that he simply shouldn't and like Justin there are insanely High highs with Drake but inexplicably there are also very low lows one big thing that should only improve as Drake goes to the NFL level at least you'd hope is his Supporting Cast around him getting better there were times on tape where May would scramble and make something out of nothing and it was after an offensive lineman clearly got beat he finished the 23 season with 449 rushing yards and nine touchdowns and that was after a year in 2022 in which he had 698 rushing yards and seven touchdowns obviously Drake is nowhere near the Dual threat and Jade Daniels from LSU is as Jaden finished the 23 season with over 1100 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground and even had an 80 plus yard run against Florida for example but I think at times Drake's rushing ability is taken for granted in the sense of yes people know he can occasionally tuck it and run but there's not a lot of discussion past that obviously there was a lot of bad in the North Carolina State game nobody would deny that but he had a 56-yard run within that game and finished the game with over a 100 yards rushing he had 24 rushes of 10 or more yards in 2023 as a quarterback who is not a Scrambler and I I think it's an underrated part of his game there's plenty of plays on tape where his offensive line breaks down and there will be a defensive tackle that beats the center and Drake essentially side steps and runs up the field for a first down and a gain of 15 yards there was a play in particular against Clemson where as soon as Drake got to the top of his drop back his left guard was already beat and bad and it was either step up into the pocket and force a pass or take what the defense gives and run for a first first down this type of play is why I think Drake compares to a blend of Justin Herbert and Josh Allen Justin will occasionally step up and run and you'll see that a few times per game where Josh on the other hand just ran for 15 touchdowns in 2023 and his two seasons is in his career with over 750 yards rushing obviously I don't think Drake will ever be that type of dual threat but I think he can rush for 4 or 500 yards in a season which would be somewhere between where Herbert and Allen usually are and one thing that I love that Drake does in the Run game is he protects himself more than you think most of the time he's not taking on a 230lb linebacker with his shoulder down trying to gain an extra yard in a week 12 game in the middle of the second quarter like Josh does does Drake Take hits when he runs absolutely yes it's football hits are going to happen but there's times where you can be smart about the hits as a quarterback and I thought Drake was smart about the hits he took during the 23 season he'll go out of bounds he'll slide and he will protect the football one thing that Drake absolutely has to work on in the NFL is his consistency and footwork there's times where Drake will miss routine throws whether it's due to Happy Feet or like on this Miss throw against Clemson you see Drake miss the throw short and it's because he didn't have any of his lower body into the throw at all it's no different than you standing right now in place trying to throw ball across a room or just attempting to throw a ball as far as you can without moving your feet you can see these misses are red flags but to me I think it boils down to a few things how much of it is coachable and how much can an NFL coaching staff fix and I think the answer is very favorable and I think these are easy fixes if a team is taking Drake May in the top three of the draft then they have a plan for him this is not a sixth round developmental pick that has physical tools that oh well if he works out and we have a gem in our hands awesome no this is a player that's going to be the sole focus of a lot of people in an NFL organization I refuse to believe that with all of the resources an NFL team has combined with the flashes that Drake May shows on tape both physical and mental at times like the play against Minnesota for example that Drake won't be a successful NFL quarterback for a long long time are there times on tape where he short arms passes or time times where his stride within the pocket gets condensed which results in a ball falling at his receiver's feet Yes but are there times where he makes plays that maybe one or two guys in the league not named momes or Allen can make also yes and when it comes down to it the job of an NFL coaching staff is to bring the best out of a prospect as much as they can to give them the best chance to win I hope you enjoyed and if you did please like And subscribe as it makes videos like this possible and please
