Dragunov SVD (Chinese Type 85/NDM86) to 800yds: Practical Accuracy

thing has zero forgiveness to the target day sure does alright I'm on at two five zero shot 300 nice is it coming to the right that shot was on the right right of the center line all right I'm on it 350 impact I'm seeing a lot of heat Mirage coming from the barrel for a scope that was designed in the 60s it's incredible the modularity of the scope the the field of view is really nice I know for a fact that these Chinese scopes actually are a little bit clearer than the Russian ones though so as much heresy as that would bring to the Internet alright we're at 400 don't break this target Henry I'll use a 400 meter zero aim it low yep off the right edge I think that that was also off the right edge impact because of the offset optic I pushed it a little bit to the right but I may have zeroed it too far to the right so you said it was grouping to the right those two last shots were off the okay I'm going to use the Chevron and the first hash and start aiming in the middle of those two because when I aim dead center it was hitting to the right gotcha and at this distance although normally that would be wind indication for us there's no winter it's pretty dead yeah yeah okay all right I'm on at 450 impact that was on the lower third of the plate okay impact okay good recovery after the 400 okay 450 meters is what I'm dialed in on should be dead hold yep all right ready hard hard impact nice okay those two rounds were yeah quite tight 600 I'm on at 6 impact oh that's cleared now lie down 7 impact nice yeah once I figure it out like right now I'm aiming between the Chevron and the hash to the right so that must have must be where the where does the activated real zero point is gotcha all right 800 final target didn't see it go a little bit further to the right don't bracket it quite as hard see what we get the problem is we can't see the impacts right yeah no nothing impact of the right half of the target good elevation that's it geez okay so that's quite quite warm so a crazy run all the way out you had two misses at four mm-hmm rest of it was one for one or two for two clean right until 800 and at 800 we we experienced issues yeah I mean I think I must have had a good amount of just misses in between what like four or five yeah and to be honest those four or five I didn't I actually didn't move my in between the targets I didn't hear that much I just kind of like kept it people a lot of times like to say oh it's a it's an ND m86 it's not a Soviet Draganov and then some people on the other camp would say it's the same thing it's same same but different so I don't think we did an adequate explanation on range so we'll talk about it right here as it projectile passes through a barrel a spin is imparted upon it this spin helps the projectile stabilized in long distance flight so it doesn't go all place how fast it spins depends on how heavy or how long of a projectile you want to push through the barrel so the original designer mr. dragon off came out with had a twelve and a half inch or 320 millimeter twist this means that it was actually stabilizing the 150 grain to 160 grain projectiles perfectly and could actually push up to 170 to 180 grain projectiles with a velocity increase of the long barrel later on as his design was submitted the Russians came back and said yet Nia Nia Nia Nia mute it muscles explosive bullet you'll make sure that explosive bullets okay fine so Draganov changed his barrel twist to one and ten inch or one to two hundred and forty millimeters this means now it stabilizes anywhere between 160 and a 180 with a possibility of pushing out to 200 grains this presents a problem when you're shooting actual Russian sniper ammunition just seven and one and ball ammo and fifty-four rim is 147 to 150 grain ammunition this means that actually decreases a stabilization because it's over stabilizing the projectiles it drops the accuracy by 19% but it could use an array of ammunition that the Russians currently have in inventory including a lot of machine gun types of ammunition heavier ball everything like that now the Chinese came in and captured a lot of Russian stds when China was fighting Vietnam in the late 70s these SVD s were cloned into the Chinese type 79 Chinese type 79 had the same barrel twist but then the Chinese kind of revised it they looked at and they were saying what type of asshole makes like a rifle should explosive bullet we want accuracy make more accuracy so then in 1995 the types 85 had a 1 a 12 inch or 1 to 300 15 millimeter twist rate this particular one has a 1 in 305 millimeter twist rate which actually again shoots at a range between 150 to 180 grain projectiles so this is optimum for shooting sporting cartridges so what does this mean the Chinese dragon arm is actually close to the mr. dragon AUB's original design which is able to handle the drainage between 150 to 180 grain now if you're talking about your Russian SPD's these were able to handle some of the specialty routes the explosive rounds armor-piercing and all those things that they learn for the sniper doctrine in world war ii however it has a 19 percent decrease in accuracy when you're shooting a Russian sniper ammunition 7n1 because it's over stabilizing so when you're choosing remember to consider Chinese or Russian let's get back to the range this is one of the only semi-automatic DMR's that was designed from the ground up as a DMR right everything else m110 mark 12 Skaar heavy Mar M 21 all of those things were to us all sir right soldier style setup that word then it was it was a it was a line it was a line rifle that they turned into a sniper / - right whereas this was from day one designed as a sniper / DMR so what's the what's the magnification on this OP date it's a four by all right so 4 by optic it's a good thing is it put it's a good for battle right so there's a difference between a good a good for by and a bad 10 by oh it couldn't agree with you more I mean having clarity and a decent decent aiming reticle isn't critical but so what I'm thinking here is you mentioned that you were getting Mirage coming off the barrel which would the four by will be probably exacerbate the issue because you're not you're not getting quite as much magnification but then again maybe not no no it's it would be less of an issue because you don't so zoomed in on right the higher mag the more it would it would it would give an issue with my morale yeah I don't know if it was a heating if it was a heat issue I would like to take it back and test it and just shoot some strings dislike the m41 if there's yeah if they're shift because we did see shift in the m21 platform it was what over a minute right over a minute if shift after about 16 rounds and that hit me like a wall - yeah I mean that was pretty crazy because again I'm surprised that we went perfect yeah again 400 grand see 400 that was a me problem right so but perfect - all of a sudden what four or five misses that you threw there at eight before collecting the hit yeah ah yeah that's a little bit surprising to me so maybe it is something that we can eventually go back and review when we do more in-depth review of the system the 308 you may say is not the 54 rim that's true but the 54 rim match ammunition with 174 grain projectiles as per my loads the optimized load powder charges exactly the same and not like almost it's exactly the same as what my 175 right so we would surmise that their trajectories the flight path the the overall concept behind where it's who an impact and how is going to be very similar so here's the thing to to consider this scope I find it hard to believe that the Chinese would come up with a 308 scope to ship with these things yeah our unique through it yes i dial per dial I did not I you saw I didn't I didn't shoot it to 800 to begin with and then start the exercise I was figuring out as we went right and I was actually kind of
