today we're going to figure out who is better for a solo playthrough of Pokemon Crystal Dragonite or Tyranitar the rules for these playthroughs are listed in the description but in short they are I can only use my starter in battle I can't use any items in battle except held items no glitches or exploits and I can't use tm32 until level 100 this is double team and double team is just awful so it is only a measure of Last Resort now my methodology for determining which one of these two pseudo legendaries is the best is going to be as follows I will do initial playthroughs with both of them just to see where each one of them struggles and it will show you all of the stumbles that I have along the way then I will optimize the playthroughs with the assistance of software and come back and do a refined playthrough that hopefully shows just what these two are capable of after that we'll look over the results and determine a winner now because these two are the respective pseudo legendaries of their game they actually share the same base stat total which is 600. also I find it very interesting that they actually both are physical attack attackers and they share the exact same attack stat 134 Dragonite is slightly faster with 80 speed while Tyranitar only has 61 but Dragonite lacks the same bulk that Tyranitar has because it only has 91 HP versus 100 HP and it only has 95 defense when Tyranitar has a 110. Dragonite does wean out here with slightly higher special attack because it has 100 versus tyranitars 95 and both of them have the exact same special defense stat with 100. now in generation 2 the moves type determines which stat it uses so all the elemental moves use the special stat and for Dragonite this is sort of a problem because Dragon type moves also use the special stat so it is mostly going to be dealing damage with its weaker offensive stat and if we look at its move pool which is Gigantic by the way we can see that most of the powerful moves it learns are also special it starts with the same type attack bonus twister which is is base 40 power but it's going to be useful at least at the start of the game and then through level up it eventually gets wing attack but this is at level 55 and by that point I probably will have defeated Lance through TMS and hm's most of the notable moves it gets are all special blizzard icy wind dragon breath and it also gets access to all three of the elemental punches and all three of the Tudor moves so for physical damage it's like wing attack fly headbutt return like I guess you could use mud slap but probably not going to use too much of that just because of its low base power and of course iron tail is an option but like it's 75 accurate so I don't think so now Tyranitar does have a slightly smaller move pool and I will note here that dark type moves are special so it's starting move bite is using its lower offensive stat which is kind of awful and then eventually crunch is also using this stat but still it gets access to rock slide at level 22 and then earthquake at level 61 and also through TM in addition to that it gets access to the standard normal moves like headbutt and return and it can also use dig fire punch and all three of the Tudor moves Now quickly before I make my prediction let's go over the type Effectiveness for both of these Pokemon for Tyranitar it is unfortunately the rock dark type which is not very good defensively a lot of you mentioned on the community poll that I made that the ground type is not very good defensively but uh Tyranitar is not the ground type by the way so with the rock dark typing it is weak to fighting ground bug steel water grass and later on when it's introduced to the fairy type and of these weaknesses it does have a double weakness to fighting type moves which is really unfortunate for the Johto games because both Chuck and Bruno are fighting Specialists Dragonite on the other hand has a much better typing it is dragon flying and this gives it a weakness to rock ice dragon and later fairy in this case it does have one four times weakness of course to ice so perhaps price will be scary also some of Misty's Pokemon have ice moves so I could see her being a bit scary so my prediction going into things is that Dragonite is going to be able to beat the game slightly faster and I mean slightly faster like maybe one minute faster than Tyranitar I think that overall this cute orange dragon is going to be held back by the fact that it's going to be using mostly special moves throughout the playthrough whereas Tyranitar is going to be mostly held back by its typing as well as its low speed stat I made a community poll so that all of you could share your opinions on how this race is gonna go 54 of you said that Tyranitar is gonna win and 46 percent of you said the Dragonite is gonna win and that's with around 14 000 votes so the only way to find out is getting into these playthroughs so let's do it and we'll start with Dragonite now I have to apologize right away here because in this challenge I had no idea what to nickname my Dragonite so yeah I just called it Dragonite no nickname super simple very uncreative I'm sorry about that now for it I expect the early game to be fairly easy but because it is a pseudo legendary it has a slow growth rate Tyranitar also does so they're both going to be leveling up at the same speed but what I have found in doing solo challenges in these games is that slow growth rate Pokemon really need to defeat all of the trainers especially in the early game so that the level curve doesn't get the best of them and cause a lot of resets later on the first trainer that I have to fight is the Rival and today he's gonna have Totodile I really thought about this and of all of the starters there isn't really one that is strong against Dragonite like you might think that Totodile is going to get an awesome ice move like Ice Beam or something but like no this thing is only ever gonna get water gun so it's probably going to be using a move like slash against Dragonite throughout most of the playthrough yeah the Rival is just really bad in these games anyways that's the best I could do so let's move on next I want to answer a question which I think some of you might have which is why am I not starting from a Dratini and a Larvitar well the answer is that I would probably beat Lance before both of them would have evolved to their final form and then the video does not really seem like a Tyranitar vs Dragonite video it's more like a Dragonair versus poofitar video also is it Pupitar Pupitar I think it's Pupitar yeah Pupitar probably because it's like a pupa anyways it would be like Dragonair vs Pupitar and that doesn't sound very entertaining I'm sure in the future when I want an extreme Challenge I will do a solo playthrough with Dratini and Larvitar so stay tuned for those videos eventually so once I defeat all the trainers on the way to Violet City Dragonite is only level eight luckily there are some more trainers before I face Faulkner I defeat both of the bird Keepers in the gym and then I head to sprout Tower after all Dragonite has a double resistance to vine whip so these Bellsprout are just not scary after defeating the sage Dragonite is level 11 and with that I am ready to take on Faulkner let's see how this goes he leads with a level 7 Pidgey so this thing is normally quite scary because he can use mud slap to lower your accuracy but I'm a flying type so that's not gonna work I knock it out over two hits and then Pidgeotto comes in next this thing knows that gust is going to be doing the most damage so it goes for it but it does pathetic damage and I finish it off with two more uses of Twister so that's it Dragonite has earned itself the first badge and with it comes a 10 boost to its already amazing attack stat so now let's switch over to Tyranitar and see how it does in the early game and Dragonite got 8 minutes and 25 seconds on Faulkner but I think Tyranitar is going to outpace that and that's just because the rock type is so outstanding in the early game it resists all the plentiful normal types and Tyranitar actually starts off with decent moves where dragonate gets twister which has an effective power of 60 after the same type attack bonus Tyranitar's bite has an effective power of 90. and it also has a chance to cause the opponent to Flinch if you've watched a lot of my generation 1 videos you'll think this is a 10 chance but in generation 2 it has been moved up to a 30 chance yeah there's going to be a lot of flinches I think it's also worth explaining now that sandstorms affect in generation 2 is not what it is starting in generation 4. in those games it boosts rock type Pokemon's special defense stat but in this game it is only going to be dealing damage to the opposing Pokemon still though this damage is actually better in generation 2 than it is in any later generations because in these games it deals 1 8 damage per turn which is just way better than 1 16th so which starter did I pick the Rival to have for Tyranitar in this case I gave him Chikorita after all bay leaf is going to be super effective with Razor Leaf against Tyranitar and that's as early as Azalea town so I think that overall here Tyranitar is going to have a little bit of a tougher time against the Rival in the next section of the game I mirror the path that Dragonite took in future segments of the video If I don't don't explain the route that a Pokemon took between gyms it's probably because they took the exact same route as the other Pokemon so just make that assumption in those cases after defeat the sage at the top of the tower Tyranitar is level 10 by the way the grass type moves here were not a challenge for it like yes they are super effective against the rock type but my special defense stat is pretty good I finish off the trainers in Faulkner's gym and with that I am ready to take on the birdmaster now here Tyranitar has a disadvantage that Dragonite doesn't have and that's the fact that this Pidgey knows that mud slap is super effective so it is going to use it well that is if it gets a chance because bite is just so powerful it knocks it out in one turn well that's good so Pidgeotto is next and here's the thing even if it lowers my accuracy with mud slap I can still set up Sandstorm and deal damage to it so I'm not really scared plus bite just causes a Flinch and then Tyranitar knocks it out on the next turn so it clocks in with a time of 7 minutes and 2 seconds it is much faster than Dragonite right away a however up next for it is potentially a challenge in the form of Bugsy I defeat all the trainers going south into Union Cave and then in slowpokes well I have to defeat all the Rockets but this doesn't even get Tyranitar to level 15. at least there's some trainers in Bugsy's gym who will get me over that damage rounding threshold so let's try to face the Bug Master he leads with a Metapod it's strange when the first gym leader has a level 7 Pidgey and it's far more terrifying than the second Gym Leader's first Pokemon I critical hit it with bite and it goes down in a single hit next is Kakuna and bite almost knocks it out without a critical hit it just goes for Harden and I polish it off on the next turn okay it is time for the Pokemon that I'm afraid of it's Scyther now it's much faster than Tyranitar so it moves first hits Fury cutter and it does about nine damage so that's gonna start doing a lot really soon bite does about a third it hits another Fury cutter taking Tyranitar to just above half my bite takes it to Orange and then Fury cutter takes me all the way down to seven hit points alright but I should just finish it off with bite on the next turn unless it survives on a sliver I do recover with a berry but that isn't enough to save Tyranitar from the next hit from Fury cutter so that is my first reset here's the thing though I am kind of kicking myself for that loss and here is why I can just knock the Metapod out again and then he gets the Kakuna I can set up Sandstorm this way each turn it's going to do chip damage to the Scyther which will Stack Up and allow me to knock it out with three hits from bite by doing this I'm gonna prevent it from getting its fourth hit with Fury cutter well actually in this case Sandstorm does enough damage that it just knocks it out and doesn't even get a third hit so that was the dominant performance that I wanted from Tyranitar it clocks in with a time of 12 minutes and 6 seconds against Bugsy honestly one reset is not bad against trainer that I'm weak to however greatness might be far away for Tyranitar because next it's gonna have to be able to get through the rivals bay leaf he leads with Gastly of course I go for biting and knocks it out in one hit that's great bay leaf is next I go for bite does about a third causes a Flinch perfect I go for bite again it hits a Razor Leaf this time which crits and does so much but Tyranitar survives uses another bite and the bay leaf goes down all that's left is Zubat and of course this thing is not to be feared my bite causes a Flinch so it doesn't even do anything and I knock it out okay so with this fight out of the way Tyranitar is now through the early game trainers that I thought were gonna give it problems and it did this in quite dominating fashion the only reset was just player error not knowing that I should have used Sandstorm first turn and one thing that's going to accelerate its progress throughout the game is the fact that it can finally start using a physical move because in the forest I'm able to teach it headbutt remember when I said there were going to be a lot of flinches yeah headbutt also has a 30 chance to Flinch yeah this thing makes the opponent Flinch like crazy I guess it makes sense it's like a really intimidating Rock Dragon it's like green by the way I just want to say iron Thorns is one of the best Paradox Pokemon in the new games I put that thing on my team as soon as I saw it so neat in Goldenrod City I do my typical errands I'm gonna stop by the poker center after that I head to the underground and fight all of the trainers here I do this so I don't have to backtrack here later in the game plus I want to pick up the coin case this hidden super potion and then I want to make Tyranitar extra Happy by giving it a nice haircut um I don't know if they like trim the spikes on its back or something like that does not look like this thing has hair after that I head into the game corner and buy myself an Abra it is really helpful for teleporting around the map and saving time and then I head into the department store to pick up the TM for fire punch while I'm here I also grab a second copy of the headbutt TM having this just allows me to remove head button and teach it back in its place later on I don't think I'm gonna need this though but it's better safe than sorry north of Goldenrod I pick up Kenya this is a great Flying Mule and then I defeat all the spinning trainers and talk to Floria she runs away from me and I teleport back to Goldenrod City now it's time for Whitney now here's a common misconception that I had as a kid which I really thought the rock type would resist the rock type but it does not so miltank's rollout could cause problems for Tyranitar in the last battle I made the unfortunate mistake of not setting up Sandstorm early so I do that here against Clefairy it uses metronome and roll's mega horn are you kidding me a super effective bug move it's like the best bug move in the game I can't believe that still Clefairy is pretty weak so it doesn't actually end up doing that much damage I go for headbutt it takes the pink fairy to Red it just uses mimic and then Sandstorm knocks it out okay time for the mill tank let's do this well it starts to get rolling I go for Screech to improve my damage output significantly it takes Sandstorm damage and then I go for headbutt which takes it to Orange okay I have to say I was hoping for a bit more damage but still rollout isn't doing enough so my next head button knocks the cow out and with that I've earned myself the third batch and this one gives me a 10 boost to my Pokemon speed stat alright so Tyranitar got a 19 minute and four second split against Whitney and it did have one reset on Bugsy so I wonder if Dragonite can catch up a little bit in this portion of the game one small advantage that it gets here over Tyranitar is that in Union Cave it can go to the basement floor and pick up the TM for Swift which is a 60 base power normal move because my attack stat is so significantly higher than my special attack stat this move is going to be much better than twister by the way did you know that twister also has a chance to cause the opponent to Flinch it is a 20 chance it also hits Pokemon during the semian vulnerable turns of fly and bounce which is never relevant in this game but yeah if I could use it in that case it would deal double damage I really just want to take this time to mention how when I was a kid I saw the move twister and I was like this is the coolest move name and then I tried it and I was like no this move is awful I am never using this move again it's probably because I was using it with a Gyarados yeah Gyarados has a lot of attack not as much special attack with Swift on my move set I'm easily able to make it through the rockets and get to Bugsy okay let's do this now I do not expect Dragon Knights to have any problems here I knocked the Metapod out with two uses of Swift next is Kakuna and it also goes down to two uses of Swift and now it's time for the Scyther here's the thing though Dragonite has a big Advantage here in its typing because scyther's Fury cutter is not very effective as a result it just like stops using it after one turn uses quick attack which makes no sense and then I finish it off so that was an easy second Gym Dragonite clocks in with a time of 13 minutes and 34 seconds so it looks like Tyranitar maintained its lead there next I have to face the Rival outside of Azalea town and I really wanted twister to one hit the Gastly here it doesn't but at least it causes a Flinch so might as well just have been a one hit anyways next he sends in Zubat I polish it off with two uses of Swift and then the Croconaw comes out and as I said before the sync doesn't have a particularly good move set so yeah it's just using scratch against Dragonite I finished off with three hits and with that I am able to explore the forest well I immediately backtracked to the city and pick up the charcoal then in the forest I grabbed the TM for headbutt because this is going to be a better move for Dragonite to use than Swift granted I am going to teach it in the place of leer after all Swift could be useful if I get my accuracy lowered now throughout the next section of the game and take a cinch through the same route that I did with Tyranitar I order things slightly differently but it has no impact on the time what I really want to mention here is that I go to the department store and I pick up the TMS for the elemental punches access to these gives Dragonite such incredible move coverage but all of that isn't going to be relevant right away after all I don't have a fighting move and Whitney is the next major threat for Dragonite and I say major threat because she is a major threat miltank's rollout is super effective after all I lead by using headbutt against the Clefairy it takes it to red and then the thing misses a double slap so I just finish it off for free that is perfect now against miltank Dragonite is speed tied with it which is quite unfortunate however I have Thunder Wave I move first paralyze it and miltank misses its first hit alright that is an exceptional first turn now because I'm consistently out speeding I'm hoping that paralysis in combination with the 30 chance to Flinch on headbutt is gonna mess up miltank long enough that it doesn't get a combo of rollout setup instead it just goes for stomp not really sure why it did that and following that paralysis prevents it from moving and then I cause a Flinch so yeah Dragonite makes it through this fight with ease it clocks in with a time of 20 minutes and 50 seconds now just hold on to those results in your mind because I want to do a couple things with Dragonite first I am going to remove Thunder Wave now that I no longer need it for Whitney and teach ice punch in its place because having an ice move is just so good also I'm gonna get rid of Twister because a dragon type move is not very good and I'll teach Thunder Punch in its place after that I've gotta face Sudowoodo and now let's reflect on the results from the Whitney fight so Dragonite has actually Fallen further behind I think the best explanation for this is up until this point Tyranitar has just been able to deal more damage with moves like bite however in this next section of the game I would really be surprised if dragonate doesn't claw back sometime after all its moveset is really good now in equity City I battled the kimono girls they give great experience this is like the one place in all of Johto where it feels like you're leveling up quickly why is the level curve so wonky in this game like I know why but it's very frustrating after that I head south of equity City and I grabbed the magnet from this person then I teleport back to the Pokemon Center and head towards the lake of rage and that's because I want to pick up the TM for hidden power now in all my playthroughs to ensure that I can rank these Pokemon fairly I set their DVS to close to perfect values not exactly perfect values because I want to be able to set hidden power to a specific type and a specific power in this case for Dragonite it is going to be hidden power ground with 70 base power I teach in the place of Swift and now my mid game move set is complete so let's continue with the major battles first I have to face the Rival in Burn Tower if you're familiar with golden Crystal you'll actually think that this battle is optional but in Crystal they made it mandatory there's just a guy that like kicks you out of Morty's gym if you haven't done this battle yet anyways his first Pokemon is Haunter I go for hidden power ground and it won shots this is why I chose this move it also one shots the following Magnemite that's perfect ice punch takes the Zubat out and all that's left is the crocodile and uh yeah I have Thunder Punch so great coverage here is perfect by the way any of the starters that he picked I would have super effective damage against so doesn't really matter before I face Morty I headed on to Route 39 here I can pick up the mint berry as well as a hidden nugget after that I face the one mandatory trainer between here and the next city and then I teleport back I fight only the three mandatory trainers in Morty's gym by the way you can actually skip one person I didn't know that until a while ago anyways now let's take on the ghost specialist so one of the major problems in this fight for solo challenges is the fact that Morty has four Pokemon and his first ghastly nose curse so out speeding it and one hitting it is key however hidden power allows Dragonite to do that very easily also if you check my speed I'm going to move first against all of his Pokemon so really there is no way to lose here because even if the Gengar is a two hit which in this case it isn't but if it was it could have used hypnosis and put me to sleep but my mint berry would have just cured that and I would have won anyways so that is a very easy fourth badge for Dragonite so I should probably talk about which type of hidden power I have chosen for Tyranitar but before I do that I am gonna head to the national park because here I can grab the TM for dig this is a pretty good ground type move that Tyranitar can use no it does not get the same type attack bonus I'm actually trying to use it here against the Sudowoodo and things get kind of scary it takes me now to 13 hit points I am very glad I didn't lose that fight after that I grabbed the hard Stone which is perfect for boosting the power of rock type moves after all I'm going to get rock slide in one level I might as well just fight psychic Greg here and learn that move right now I teach it in the place of Sandstorm because I think this move has sort of worn out its welcome plus there's a TM for it so I can relearn it later on if I really want to and I want to talk about one of the frustrations I have with hidden power and how it works all the different types of hidden power are not made equally some of them require lower DVS that's because the type of the move is determined exclusively by your attack and defense DBS so they need to be set to different values what that means is if you want hidden power fighting you have to have 12 attack and 12 defense whereas if you want hidden power dark you have 15 attack and 15 defense and here's we're looking at Tyranitar's weaknesses again so remember it has a double weakness to fighting type moves and single weaknesses to ground bugs steel water and grass so when choosing my hidden power type I wanted to choose a type that was going to cover most most of these weaknesses with the most important coverage being against fighting types so unfortunately for Tyranitar the best type for its hidden power to be I think is hidden power flying and I say that this is unfortunate for Tyranitar because hidden power flying is not one of the better ones in terms of DV spread so my green lizard today is gonna have 12 attack and 13 defense fine but at least it's gonna make trainers like Chuck and Bruno much less dangerous however right away I don't really think I'm gonna need it I'm Gonna Keep the moves that I have right now against the Rival I can use dig on the Haunter to knock it out in one turn next is Bayleef and I don't have something that's super effective here yes hidden power flying would have been but rock slide is good enough it knocks it out in two hits next is Magnemite dig takes care of it in a single hit and then all that's left is the Zubat and of course rock slide is great so now let's take on Morty and this one is going to be a little bit harder for Tyranitar because well number one I forgot my mint berry that's a bit frustrating but number two the Gengar is going to out speed at least I'm going to move first against the ghastly and the Haunter that have curse so they can't put this awful status condition on Tyranitar Gengar comes out it just goes for mean look okay that's fine dig hits but it doesn't quite finish it off I guess that's the difference of 10 base power between hidden power ground and dig Gengar goes for Shadow Ball doing very little and then I finish it off on the next turn so with that I'm going to clean up Morty's last Haunter and earn myself the fourth badge in Olivine City I grabbed the hm for strength and then I head out to the beach where I pick up the sharp beak which is going to be great to give a 10 boost to hidden power flying after that I catch myself a krabby this thing is an amazing hm mule I have a chat with Jasmine next then because I have to fulfill my meme Lord duties I defeat Dennis in the lighthouse and after that I make my way across the sea to face Chuck I defeat the trainers in his gym by the way they're very easy for Tyranitar it didn't struggle against them at all I still haven't even taught hidden power flying at this point but don't worry for Chuck I'm going to I remove headbutt and now it's time to do do this truck leads with primeape I go for hidden power flying with the sharp beak and it knocks it out in a single hit okay so that was perfect next is Poliwrath I go for hidden power flying it does more than half and then it hits with Dynamic punch which remember is doing four times damage however it is not quite enough because Tyranitar survives with six hit points the unfortunate thing is the dynamic punch has a secondary effect which is confusion and as a result Tyranitar hits itself and that's my second reset however I don't think that that's gonna happen again you know now that I'm thinking about it it might be better to bring the bitter Berry into this fight that way I can heal in case it does land a dynamic punch and I just barely survive well it's just gonna miss its next Dynamic punch anyways so I polish off the Poliwrath and with that I have earned myself the fifth badge with trucks badge I can now use fly so I head back to the first root of the game and pick up the pink bow after that I grab some candies and then I head to this little place to feed the three cool trainers here and grab myself the soft sand which is going to give dig a nice boost to its power and with that out of the way it is time to start the rocket plot line first I have to defeat the Red Gyarados because it has a high catch rate I don't like to catch this thing to use HMS with and in this case rock slide is super effective so I take it down in one hit after that Lance spirals away into the sky and I follow suit by turning into a bird and using Leaf Powers after that Lance uh uses his Charizard to beat up a store employee and then we uh head down into the rocket Hideout and luckily for all of you the power of video editing is on your side so hey I've already beat the rocket executive isn't that convenient I walk over here to these little stairs and oh look at that all the electrodes are done so convene hit unfortunately for me this section of the game took much longer but at least it's out of the way now and we can go up against price with Tyranitar I am expecting this fight to be easy after all I do have a type advantage against at least one of his Pokemon he leads with seal and this thing is a mono water type so no I do not have a type advantage here however I'm expecting Tyranitar just to be strong enough to knock it out I go for rock slide and it takes it down all right that's perfect next he sends in pilo swine and because this thing is a ground type rock slide is not going to be super effective it's just neutral now blizzard could be fairly scary if it hits after all it can freeze but no Pilot's wine decides to go for mist instead wonderful choice I use hidden power flying to finish it off just so that I have increased accuracy after all rockslide can miss next is dugong and this is actually the only Pokemon on prices team that Rockside is super effective against so it's nice to just knock it out in one hit that was a really easy badge and with it I get a boost to my special attack stat but once again not my special defense stat due to the glitch which for Tyranitar and Dragonite isn't a huge issue because they already have a decent special defense stat with price taken care of there's only one leader I have left to take care of and that's Jasmine so I visit her in the lighthouse give the medicine to amphi and now let's take her on so her first Pokemon is Magnemite and uh yeah dig is just gonna knock it out in one hit that's no issue now here I'm really hoping that the soft sand is gonna boost Diggs damage enough to maybe three hit the Steelix alright it looks like it is it misses an iron tail which is convenient because it is super effective against Tyranitar however Steelix doesn't have the most impressive attack stat so I'm sure with Tyranitar's defense it'll be able to tank at least two or three of those I hit with dig again then Iron Tail hits and okay it did just under half I was not expecting that much however I'm doing enough damage that my next dig knocks the Steelix out and all that Jasmine has left is a Magnemite so I clean it up and with that I've earned myself the seventh badge and a boost to my defense stat so can Dragonite start to pull itself back into this race over this section of the game Tyranitar's last split on Jasmine was 45 minutes and 25 seconds so let's see if Dragonite can beat that I'm expecting that it will be able to get some sort of small advantage in this section of the game after all Chuck doesn't really pose a threat I make it through the trainers in his gym without any issues so let's see how this goes first up is primeape and as a flying type it is really sad that Dragonite does not have a flying type move at this point so I'm just gonna have to use headbutt to knock the primeape out yes headbutt is slightly better than hidden power because normal type moves are getting a 12.5 Boost from Whitney's badge yes all of the badges in this game give a type bass boost I take a primate about with the second headbot and Chuck sends in Poliwrath however it's a water type so I have Thunder Punch here and that should let me knock it out in two hits Chuck just goes for mind reader which is useless and then Thunder Punch knocks it out on the next turn alright so that was a very fast win for Dragonite once again there's some magical video editing here teleporting us from Price's gym all the way into the rocket Hideout when the electrodes have been defeated now I have a choice to make with Dragonite and that is do I fight price next or do I head back and fight Jasmine against Jasmine I already have all the moves that I'll need to defeat her and price does have super effective damage against Dragonite but I will lose a little bit of time if I fly to Olivine City and then fly back to Mahogany town to defeat price also price is pretty bad let's be honest I know that Dragonite has a four times weakness to ice moves but I think that I can defeat him on my first attempt so let's try this in the hopes that I will not have to waste any time backtracking and that Dragonite won't get a single reset so up first is seal and it does know two ice moves in the form of icy wind and Aurora beam I'm really hoping here that Thunder Punch is gonna well pack enough of a punch to knock the seal out in one hit alright it does but I realized something unfortunate there I forgot to give Dragonite the magnet before this fight so maybe the dugong is gonna survive against it once again I go for Thunder Punch and okay even with the magnet I would not have knocked it out it hits an aurora beam does half to Dragonite and then I finish it off okay it's time for the pilo swine and Thunder Punch is not going to work here so it makes most sense to use headbutt in combination with the pink bow for maximum damage and potentially the chance to Flinch it does half doesn't cause a Flinch and pilo Swine goes for blizzard alright that is it I should have gone to Jasmine well ah piloswine's attack just misses so Dragonite gets another headbutt and uh yeah it just gets a critical hit too so goodbye price I hope that I'll be able to figure out a better strategy for him in the follow-up playthrough alright so I have to fight Jasmine next and this fight is going to be so easy with Dragonite I just one shot the Magnemite after that Steelix comes out obviously I have ice punch here and in this case I just freeze it so perfect I finish it off in three more hits Magnemite comes out and yeah it's done so that was very easy so Dragonite clocks in after Jasmine with a time of 42 minutes and 16 seconds now it has taken a major lead over Tyranitar that is probably because it has no resets to this point and it did squeeze through price with some luck now we'll just jump into the next major battle and it's kind of a major battle it is the Rival in the underground there's really not much to mention during the rocket plot line like after this fight once I defeat all the rockets in the underground I will pick up the TM for return it is a fantastic normal type move with base 102 power once your friendship is maxed out the way this move calculates its base power is by taking your friendship value which is a value that ranges from 0 to 255 it's a one byte of information and then it divides that by 2.5 and rounds down so if it divides 255 by 2.5 it gives you 102 just so you know my overlay is calculating returns power dynamically so once I give this to my Pokemon you can see it's up-to-date power in combination with things like type Effectiveness and the type bass boost of the pink bow so that's why sometimes its power will go over 102 on my overlay and yeah here Dragonite makes it all the way to the rivals Ace which is for alligator and what do you expect from it an ice move of course not I go for Thunder Punch it takes it down to Orange and I actually paralyze it here so that's convenient because of that it can't even attack and show us its moves which would not be ice moves and then I just knock it out on the next turn so that was an easy fight with the Rival out of the way I make my way through ice path and in here I'm going to pick up the nevermelt ice and it's gonna be immediately put to use because the next gym leader of course is Claire so against Clara would be highly surprised if Dragonite does not just one hit with all of its ice punches and uh yeah I'm gonna take down all the dragon arrows which is really convenient by the way one of them has Ice Beam so it's really good that I can avoid getting hit by this move last of course is Kingdra it does have super effective dragon breath but I'm hoping that return is just gonna two shot it it looks like it will Kingdra hits with dragon breath it doesn't even do half and then I finish her Ace on the next turn so now I have to take care of some errands before the league and these are my standard errands first I have to go to the dragon stand and here we have a little dance check this out yeah dance party in here after that I fly to Violet City and here I'm gonna go to the Mart and pick up some Escape ropes after that I head over to the Little Pond in this city like I don't want to call it a lake it is not a lake it is definitely a pond and I pick up a rare candy there's another one of these south of Goldenrod city which I pick up after all I did not grab the soft sand with Dragonite yet after that I head into the Whirl Islands pick up another rare candy and then there's one final one in Johto in Mount mortar it does require waterfall though so now let's head into Victory Road and here we are gonna have to face the Rival now this fight is going to be incredibly easy after all it always is and no the for alligator still does not have a better water type move than water gun yeah it's probably just gonna use slash hopefully we get to see that here anyways while I'm fighting him I just want to mention dragonates time because right now it is faster than Lugia was to this point in the game so there is potential for dragonate to set one of the fastest times we have had yet in a Johto playthrough so at the end of the fight I don't knock the feraligator out convenient C there he gets to show us the fact that it only has slash it does like maybe a seventh maybe an eighth I don't know and then I just knock it out so he was really easy and with that Dragonite is off to the league at a time of one hour one minute and two seconds with no resets this thing is putting in such a dominant performance but maybe Tyranitar can catch up in the late sections of the game first of all it has to beat the Rival in the underground and uh this fight is really easy like yes he does have Meganium but hidden power flying just one shots it after that I one shot the Magnemite with dig the Sneasel goes down to a single rock slide then it's Haunter time and obviously dig gets the one hit here so yeah that's a very easy fight but Claire might be more difficult so for this fight I give up bite in favor of return I'm really hoping that with the pink bow this will be enough to knock out the dragonairs in one hit the first one goes down I level up to 45 which is over a damage running threshold convenient Claire sends in Kingdra return takes it to Orange and then it misses a smoke screen so I take it out for free all right that's perfect the next Dragonair also goes down so it looks like I have a consistent role against them and with that I finish off the final gym with Tyranitar now on my way to Victory Road I visit this old woman and she gives me tm37 which is Sandstorm I'm thinking that I might end up needing this against a trainer like blue or red maybe even Lance actually the reason I say those three trainers is just because they like to set up rain dance with one of their Pokemon so canceling out their weather for more favorable weather for my Pokemon seems like it makes sense then in Victory Road I pick up the TM for earthquake and I hear I have to mention something because I accidentally replaced hidden power because of a Miss click and uh yeah so now I have dig and earthquake on my move set which is really unfortunate before Bruno so the fight with the Rival is gonna start here and I really want to unpack this mistake because if I would say playing and game time was the most important metric then I would just reset and do that portion of the game again and then teach earthquake in the place of dig and there would be no mistake but with my rules and with the four metrics that I track one of the metrics will be affected by my mistake no matter what so I could reset which would impact both my resets and my real-time metric but it wouldn't impact my level or game time metric however it tends to be the case that I prioritize real-time finishes so in this case when I make a mistake like this often times I will just try and get through the playthrough even with the mistake and to be fair I don't think the Tyranitar is going to struggle too much against Bruno really the only Pokemon I don't want to get hit by is the machamp's cross chop I am definitely going to be able to tank all of the other Pokemon so because of that I decided to go ahead with facing the league even with this mistake also there is one more reason that I think this mistake is okay because I can learn crunch when Tyranitar hits level 47 after knocking out the Kadabra this move is going to be excellent against Will's Pokemon so I can teach it in the place of dig and now my moveset is return crunch earthquake and rock slide which I think is going to be pretty good against most of the league so let's see how this goes first is Will and against him I have a lot of choices I can use rock slide against his flying types so I take the first zatu out easily next he sends an Executor and crunch is going to be the best here I was actually surprised because it gets the one hit I am very used to executor having exceptional special defense because in Generation 1 the special is a unified stat but in this game it doesn't have very good special defense next will send in Slowbro this thing also doesn't have excellent special defense so crunch one shots it as well Zach who's next since crunch is doing so well I just use it here too and it one shots okay so this move is really good against Will's team last is jinx and uh yeah you guessed it crunch one shots so I've made it to Koga and against him Tyranitar is not going to struggle either because the combination of rock slide and earthquake gives me super effective damage against almost all of his Pokemon the only one I don't have it against is the Fortress because steel bug is like pretty good defensively unless you have a fire move still rockslide is doing enough to knock it out in three hits and I don't get hit by explosion so that's what counts Mock's next earthquake one shots rock slide misses the venomoth of course because this thing is the evasion typing but luckily I take it out on the next turn and all that's left is Crobat rock slide hits and Koga is no more it's time for Bruno and it's really great that he starts with hip montop because here I can go for earthquake it's gonna go underground with dig and since I'm out speeding I can use earthquake again and finish it off without taking any damage that is the perfect lead for me now despite Hitmonlee being fast the AI Pokemon don't have any stat experience and Tyranitar is over leveled so I'm obviously moving first here I take it out with one earthquake level up to level 49 and then he sends in Hitmonchan now unfortunately it does have mock punch which is priority so it is going to hit me and like oh gosh that did way more than I was expecting I guess that's four times damage for you earthquake gets a crit knocking it out in a single turn and he sends in Onyx next and I take it down with earthquake not really sure why he sent in Onyx next and not the mid champ I guess it's because earthquake is super effective against Tyranitar anyways machamp's next and hopefully I can one hit like please I go for earthquake it doesn't one hit Machamp strikes back with cross chop and Tyranitar goes down okay so that's my third reset here's the thing about cross chop though it misses 20 percent of the time so I'm gonna be able to get through this fight eventually the unfortunate thing though is that I'm gonna have to knock out four of Bruno's Pokemon just to be able to roll the cross chop dice every single time but luckily for Tyranitar uh making up for my mistake with hidden power Machamp just misses crosstrop in the very next battle and I finish it off so that is very nice thank you Game for giving me a small reprieve from my errors Karen's next I was really hoping that Tyranitar's High attack stat was going to allow me to One Shot The Umbreon but this thing just refuses to faint even when I get a critical hit it uses sand attack lowering my accuracy which is really annoying I miss my next return it confuses me with confused Ray which luckily I have the bitter Berry to heal and then I take down her lead next is vileplume I use return on it luckily it misses stun Spore and then I finish it off on the next turn Okay so from here it should be a much easier fight as long as my accuracy comes through for me I watch out the murkrow with rock slide next is Houndoom obviously earthquake is the better choice here because then once I take it out Gengar comes out next and I can continue using earthquake well in this case it moves first uses lick and paralyzes Tyranitar which actually makes me miss my next move luckily it just keeps going for lick and I use earthquake finishing it all so Tyranitar has made it to the champion with a time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 26 seconds but how will dragonate do throughout the league let's see so will is first for this fight I gave Dragonite the magnet because it boosts the power of Thunder Punch and this way I have super effective damage against the slow bro I just really want to take that thing out as quickly as possible also I'm going to use return on the Jinx at one shots next he sends in Slowbro let's see if I can two shot this thing and the answer is yes I can it just goes for amnesia and then goes down without dealing any damage Thunder Punch takes out the ace zatu ice punch just barely doesn't knock out the executor but still it doesn't matter because it only goes for leech seed after this I have a chance to learn Safeguard now with Lugia and Holo this move did have its utility but here with dragonate just because of how diverse my moves are I don't think it has a place so I've defeated will and up next is Koga now for this fight I could see teaching Dragonite Fire Punch after all it is four times effective against the Fortress but overall I just don't think I'm gonna struggle here like return should be enough I take out the area dose against Fortress I'm gonna use Thunder Punch and on the second turn I get a critical hit and it goes down really convenient next is muck hidden power ground is super effective I was surprised that it didn't KO but still just goes for minimize and I knock it out crobat's next obviously Thunder Punch is super effective and I knock it out over two turns I did go for ice punch there on the side second turn by the way just in case Koga healed and I got a freeze so all that's left is venomoth and return takes it down in a single hit so it's time for Bruno and here I really do not think the Dragonite is gonna struggle the only fear in this fight is that I take enough damage throughout his first four Pokemon that when he sends up Machamp its rock slide can deal enough damage to me to knock Dragonite out however here's the thing because Hitmonlee doesn't have any moves that are good against Dragonite he sends out them a Champ's second to last and Dragonite has so much health left over that I just don't think I can lose here returned is more than half Machamp misses with rock slide like this thing has moves that just have terrible accuracy anyways I finally finish it off and with that all that's left is Hitmonlee which one return takes down so Dragonite has made it to Karen and she is known for giving Pokemon that have made it to this point in the game with no resets their first reset so I'm really hoping that doesn't happen today oh great I didn't heal going into this fight so that's not looking good for me at least the Umbreon just goes for fame attack so I knock it out without getting my accuracy Lord or confused that's really convenient hidden power ground knocks the Gengar out in one hit murkrow's next obviously ice punch takes it down it's time for Houndoom hidden power ground knocks it out alright dragon is gonna make it through this on its first attempt the uh vileplume does paralyze me but doesn't matter because it just goes for moonlight on the next turn and then I finish it off so Dragonite clocks in with a time of 1 hour 5 minutes and 7 seconds before the champion so now let's see who's the dragon Master today Lance leaves with Gyarados and obviously this isn't going to be an issue for Dragonite so let's talk about his team his second Dragonite has blizzard which is very scary his Aerodactyl also has rock slide which is super effective and his final Dragonite has outrage he chooses Aerodactyl second and it out speeds going for rock slide which does almost half and it also causes a Flinch that is unfortunate luckily the Aerodactyl misses its next rock slide I go for ice punch and it just barely doesn't finish it off but it does get the freeze so that's perfect I finish it off on the next turn Lance sends in his second Dragonite I use ice punch it goes down in one hit and then he sends in his first Dragonite okay I guess this thing does have super effective damage in the form of Twister but like really twister is not that good plus I can just one hit it with ice punch so I think I've done this Charizard comes out next I use return turn it goes down over two turns it does use Hyper Beam so I have orange health for the last Dragonite but I'm really hoping that ice punch with the nevermelt ice is going to get this done and it does so with that Dragonite has beat the league it clocks in with a real time of 1 hour 6 minutes and 15 seconds this is a game time of 4 hours and 18 minutes it had zero resets and it finished this at level 50. so unfortunately for Tyranitar in this section of the game it is not going to be able to keep Pace with Dragonite but there is still a chance because I finished my runs when I defeat red for Lance I am really hoping that Rockside is going to be enough to get through most of his Pokemon strangely he chooses Charizard next which like I have rock slide it is four times effective and I knock his lizard out in one hit next he goes for Aerodactyl rock slide is super effective here but the Aerodactyl does Hit Me First and yes it causes a Flinch which is so annoying hits me with the second rock slide which flinches Tyranitar again are you kidding me I feel like dark types should be immune to flinches anyways finally after taking a third hit and going under half health I knocked the Aerodactyl out now I'm gonna have to get through three Dragon Knights so let's see if Rock slides up to the task he takes the first one out in one hit it takes the second one out in one hit all right can it defeat Lance's Ace Dragonite well in this case it just misses Dragonite goes for outrage which does about a quarter but then my next rock slide hits and it gets the KO okay so Tyranitar clocks in with a real time of 1 hour 10 minutes and 24 seconds this is a game time of 4 hours and 29 minutes it had three resets and it finished this at level 51. and now for Kanto let's jump over to dragonite's playthrough because I really just want to state that both of these Pokemon are not going to have very many problems in this section of the game like Misty could potentially pose a threat for Dragonite because she has a Lapras and I think it has ice beam and blizzard I Thunder Punch The Golduck and then Lapras comes out I go for Thunder Punch it doesn't get the KO but it does cause paralysis and then Lapras just uses rain dance okay fine and I knock it out move on to the Starmie I take it down with a single Thunder Punch and here Dragonite gets the chance to learn wing attack it uh feels like this is coming way too late in the game like Generation 1 has some bad move pools but generation 2 also has some really bad move pools I feel like once we get to Generation 3 Game Freak had started to figure things out still in this case I do teach Dragonite wing attack because there's no way for me to get this move if I don't learn it here I teach it in the place of hidden power after all I can just re-buy this TM in the Celadon department store last is Quagsire witness my shame here as I use Thunder Punch against the ground type that's because I was clicking too fast by the way just spamming a anyways I use return on the next turn and I knock it out okay so that's done now I'm just gonna skip all of the other gym leaders in Kanto because Dragonite beats them all without any resets so let's Jump Ahead to Blue blue leaves with Pidgeot now I was really hoping that ice punch would get the job done but it doesn't well it kind of does because it freezes the bird so I just knock it out on the next turn that's perfect next is ride on go for ice punch again and it finishes it off okay so I'm not gonna get hit by rock slide there Gyarados is next obviously Thunder Punch I take it down in one hit it's time for Alakazam return knocks it out in one hit okay so I don't have super effective damage against Arcanine he goes for extreme speed it's probably using this because it knows that its fire moves are resisted and uh yeah as a result I just knock it out executor's last and I can actually use wing attack here it is better than ice punch still it doesn't knock out the strange Coconut Tree by the way I just saw on Twitter recently that executor has the exact same Sprite in uh in this game that it has in Pokemon yellow it's just recolored anyways I knock it out after blue uses a full restore and with that I have defeated the second last trainer with Dragonite so before I face Fred I want to do one thing because once I reach Mount Silver I can easily fly back to Johto and then I can use the money that I've earned in Kanto to purchase coins so that I can use the move tutor and I'm doing this so they can replace ice punch with ice beam I really wanted to replace Thunder Punch with Thunderbolt as well but I ran out of money so yeah I guess I'm gonna have to face red with this move set so after using all mirror candies Dragonite is level 68 I also teach it rest in the place of wing attack so let's see if we can beat red he leads with Pikachu and in this case I go for return and it knocks it out in a single hit okay that's good I do have the pink bow after all to boost its damage next he sends in blastoise okay I kind of forgot about the Blastoise and it has blizzard I go for Thunder Punch because it's super effective and it doesn't even do half Blastoise uses its super effective move and oh it knocks Dragonite out in one hit so that is my first reset and that's a loss that really undercuts my confidence well at least I can feet the Pikachu consistently I guess alright so let's try to roll for damage against the blastways again maybe I will two shot it if I get better rolls and it actually looks like I will in this case Blastoise uses blizzard once again I'm hoping it gets a worse role but no Dragonite once again faints so that's my second reset if I get just one more then I'll be even with Tyranitar in this metric but blizzard is pretty inaccurate in this game it has a 30 chance to miss and in the next fight it does so that's perfect now I'm not really sure what I was thinking here but I went for return instead it's like I have the magnet I should have just Thunder punched and hoped for better damage but yeah I don't knock Blastoise out however when it hits me with blizzard Dragonite survives with 13 hit points so I guess I'm knocking the turtle out that's awesome next red sends in Espeon and oh are you kidding me Espeon next couldn't you send in Snorlax the thing is if you look at espeon's speed on the right hand side of the screen like I'm not gonna move first so because dragonite's slower it hits with psychic and that's another reset so I think that the answer is quite easy if I level up to 70 then Dragonite is hopefully going to be 2 hitting the Blastoise consistently with Thunder Punch boosted by the magnet so take the time to do that and when Dragonite gets to level 70 it has 1 hour 32 minutes and 41 seconds on the clock so because Dragonite has had some resets I think the Tyranitar might actually be able to catch up during the Kanto portion of the game in my fight against Erica tangle puts me to sleep right at the beginning of the fight and then starts to use Giga drain just doing a lot okay Tyranitar you really need to wake up here it does when it only has orange Health left knocks the vine monster out next is Victory Bell and a Rockside has the highest effective power here because I have the hard Stone so I knock it out next is Blossom and uh rocksite does not knock it out I am so lucky it flinched Erica uses a hyper potion and then I take it out with two uses of return all that's left is jump off Rockside is obviously super effective so I go for it but it misses jump off hits Giga drain but Tyranitar really wants to catch up with Dragonite it survives and knocks the like weird puffball thing out so the other gym leader it might struggle against of course is Misty the water type gym leader however in this case it is actually a series of one hits until I get to the Starmie which strangely is the Pokemon that survives my use of return I hit myself in confusion but it isn't much of an issue and then my next return finishes it off alright so it is time for Tyranitar to face blue normally he is the second hardest trainer in these runs because his team has decent type diversity also he has a lot of really strong Pokemon however Tyranitar's moveset gives it options against all of his Pokemon like yes his ride on does survive but it goes for Fury attack against my rock type okay someone has to explain to me what the AI was thinking here like why not use earthquake earthquake would be much better because I have the leftovers I heal all the damage it dealt to me and then knock it out on the next turn Gyarados is next I go for rock slide it takes it down executors next and I have crunch against it as we saw before it doesn't have great special defense so we knock it out in one turn and that leads to Alakazam which crunch also polishes off so he's only got an Arcanine left over and I resist its moves so like the worst thing it could do here is use flamethrower and burn me but that doesn't happen I finish it off and with that Tyranitar has earned passage to face red before I do that though let me teach it some new moves I teach at rest in the place of crunch and then I teach it sleep talk in the place of earthquake after all I think return and Rockside are going to be enough and really I do not need super effective damage against the Pikachu it is very weak after that I feed it rare candies taking it up to level 69 and now Tyranitar is ready to face red and yes this is just over four minutes faster than dragonite's current time so the cute flying type is really gonna need to get by him on its next fight if it has any hope and even in that case Tyranitar is gonna have to struggle against red so let's see if level 70 is enough for Dragonite I go for Thunder Punch on the Blastoise and it does half blizzard hits and Dragonite survives allowing it to use one more Thunder Punch and that gets The Knockout alright this fight is so much more consistent now and like cue the like music because Dragonite has 185 speed and Espeon has 186 speed so yeah I guess I lost I go for rest Dragonite moves first and heals entirely so let's just pause here because I had no idea what just happened I was like how is this possible the espion has more speed so I checked game hook which has access to the game's RAM and it turns out this Espeon only has 184 speed it turns out there were some programming errors when we scraped all of this data and yeah some of these stats are wrong some of them are actually very wrong anyways I'm gonna get myself a new data file so we'll have proper stats for the next playthrough still that is going to create another glitch and delete all the Pokemon's names in slots two through six ah anyways programming's hard let's get back to the playthrough so because Dragonite is faster than Espeon I am allowed to use rest but the espion is actually dealing a lot of damage to me so I really need to knock it out with return when I wake up and this might be hard because it's set up reflect but I get a critical hit and knock it out so even with the out speed on the psychic type Dragonite is gonna make it through this fight on cheer lock alone and well that's if the Snorlax isn't going to knock me out with body slam because it is doing so much damage I'm gonna have to consistently use rest against it just to survive and as a result to give the Snorlax a lot of roles for critical hits it eventually gets one and Dragonite faints so that is my fourth reset this is looking bad now this is a first playthrough so it's not exactly fair to compare it to Second playthroughs but Dragon A's current time is approaching giraffarig's time like this thing should be much better than girafforig now one thing I really like to try to prove in these videos is how the Pokemon can beat the game at least semi-consistently and uh you're gonna hate this because Blastoise misses blizzard and that's the reason the Dragonite gets to the Espeon with full health so I can just use return right away and I knock it out with another critical hit that means I get to the Snorlax with full health and I know it's going to use Amnesia first turn so as a result I can spam return twice taking it down to Red health and because I move faster I just knock it out on the next turn so yes Dragonite is gonna win because of ridiculous luck I finish off the Char Charizard in two hits with Thunder Punch and then I move on to the Venusaur and Ice Beam freezes it in this fight All of the Stars aligned anyways a win is a win so Dragonite clocks in with a real time of 1 hour 34 minutes and 48 seconds this is a game time of 5 hours and 55 minutes Dragonite had four resets and it finished the game at level 70. alright so Tyranitar has just over six minutes to clock in if it wants to beat Dragonite it's starting to look like my original prediction was incorrect however let's see how the fight against red plays out and immediately Tyranitar is confronted by a problem because Pikachu uses charm it moves first and cuts Tyranitar's attack okay that is very bad Tyranitar has 157 speed and the Pikachu has well I think it has 173 speed remember these stats charts on the right hand side are incorrect throughout these first two playthroughs also retroactively they are incorrect in all of my former videos that were filmed before this video so ah at least they will be corrected after this playthrough I finished the Pikachu off on the next turn but I am really not hopeful now the dinosaurs next and of course it is going to have super effective damage against me I go for rock slide does like a quarter that is so bad so I take it to half Health on the next turn but then it hits solar beam and that finishes Tyranitar off all right I think it is time to switch to a different move set so curse detect rest and rock slide by using detect on the first turn I can predict and outplay the Pikachu when it's gonna go for charm and then it misses Thunder and I can use Rockside to knock it out in one turn alright this is already a much better start next is Venusaur I go for rock slide because my attack isn't cut it does almost half and causes a Flinch that is perfect I go for Rockside again it causes another Flinch and because of that I managed to take down the grass type next is Blastoise I go for Rockside here and it causes a third Flinch in a row which is pretty good however it didn't quite do half and I think the blasters is going to use rain dance on the next turn so I use curse once to boost my attack step so I'll get the guaranteed knockout on the next turn it does in fact set up rain dance but then it out speeds with Surf and does so much damage to Tyranitar however I do survive it but I went for another curse I don't know what I was thinking anyways it knocks me out on the next turn so that was bad play however I should be able to fairly consistently get to this point in the game also I Can Do Better damage to the Venusaur so I'm not gonna have two hits in this fight that's nice next it's time for the Blastoise I go for Rockside right away to see if I can get better damage rolls but it also goes for surf right away and does so much as a result it takes me down on the next turn and that's not looking good so at this point Tyranitar is about to lose its time lead to Dragonite okay so Tyranitar is struggling against this team and I'm really struggling to do enough damage to the Blastoise to knock it out in two turns so if I use the hard Stone maybe I can I get a lucky critical hit on the Venusaur which is nice and with the hard Stone I knock the Blastoise out in two hits so if it uses rain dance then I am going to take it out which is really convenient however then the Espeon comes out and it was tricky for Dragonite because of speed but it is tricky for Tyranitar for a complete different reason this thing knows mud slap and it also knows that I'm a rock dark type so it's not going to use Swift or psychic meaning it is just gonna spam mud slap and ruin Tyranitar's accuracy because I cannot one shot it with rock sliding the hard Stone also I need Rockside to deal enough damage to Blastoise to two shot it and avoid surf so I can't use return because it does less damage and that means that I have a rock move which has terrible accuracy and after mudslap completely ruins my accuracy like yeah I am probably not gonna make it through this fight I do make it to the Snorlax which means I can set up curse after all this thing only has normal type moves so it's not going to be able to take Tyranitar out however the issue is that I don't have any rock slide PP left so I have to hope that after setting up with curse I can knock out his team members with struggle and the issue here is that I don't one shot the Snorlax and then it's just able to use rest and because my accuracy has been cut I am not hitting very often with struggle so yeah I do finish off the Snorlax eventually with a Critic vehicle hit but then Charizard comes out and uh it defeats Tyranitar so at this point I actually went and got pizza with my fiance I was a little bit frustrated with Tyranitar and in these challenges I always want each Pokemon to perform as well as it can like genuinely I'm never trying to bias one Pokemon over the others I am trying to do my best with each one and I just couldn't think of a way for Tyrannosaur to get through this consistently like if I take Sandstorm into the fight it doesn't help against the Blastoise and then the Espeon could ruin my accuracy so that doesn't feel very good I tried again using rock slide detect rest and sleep talk but this is not great because eventually the mud slaps stack up and I have no accuracy and then the Snorlax can take me down so uh I try to completely off the walls move set return detect rest and dynamic punch hoping that I could knock the Snorlax out faster if I hit but this doesn't work because even with the pink ball I can't finish off the Blastoise in two hits you will have noticed by this time I have leveled up to level 70 to go over a damage rounding threshold I was really hoping this would be enough for the Blastoise and in combination with Sandstorm it is so I can't get by that part of the fight consistently but then what I really need to hope for is that I can knock the Espeon out quickly which just like isn't happening it is so frustrating so once again because it gets stalled out I lose to the Snorlax maybe instead of having sleep talk I should have both rock slide and return this way I can use return once my accuracy gets cut it could be a little bit more consistent with the hard Stone I can knock the Blastoise out in two hits and then I can use Rockside to knock the Espeon out in two hits I just have to get lucky there now on the Snorlax I'm feeling a little bit more hopeful because at least I have more PP and better accuracy like it isn't perfect because I did get hit by mud slap but ah anyways I do manage to finish the Snorlax off in this fight and so I've finally done it Charizard comes out I hit it with rock slide it goes down and with that Tyranitar clocks in it got a real-time finish of 1 hour 52 minutes and 35 seconds which is a game time finish of 6 hours and 11 minutes it had 11 resets and to finish the game at level 70. so comparing these results Dragonite dramatically outperformed Tyranitar in its first playthrough remember these are preliminary results they are interesting but not worth judging the Pokemon on after all there is so much human error in first attempt playthroughs so I went back optimized rooted both of these Pokemon and here's what I came up with for their second playthroughs with Dragonite the early game is basically unchanged like Faulkner has nothing that he can do to me also Bugsy has nothing that he can do to me so I just make my way through these fights with great ease however then once I make it to Whitney you can see that my moveset has changed significantly I now have headbot ice punch Thunder Wave and Thunder Punch I think it's much better to teach these TMS right away after all I really only need Thunder Wave and headbutt in combination with each other to beat the mill tank so I might as well have the coverage moves now of course once again I am going to be using hidden power ground it was fantastic the first time around and I think it's still the right move to go for Morty's next and uh just look over here now you can see right the Pokemon do not have names anymore from slots 2 down so yeah I've replaced the data at least the stats are now correct next is Chuck obviously no problems here and next I changed things up I did decide to face Jasmine before price after the rocket plot line this is just so that my defense is raised and I also have maybe one or two more levels in this case it doesn't actually make a material difference against price but hopefully I won't have to reset here so let's see how this fight goes seals first I go for Thunder Punch I have the magnet and I knock it out in one hit okay that's perfect next he sends in dugong and in this case I get very lucky because Thunder Punch gets a critical hit and I will admit for this fight I should have had returned two shot the pilot swine but I thought that headbutt would be enough it just barely isn't still price is really bad so I take it out anyways and because of that I've made it to Claire she is easy to polish off with ice punch and so Dragonite is going to the league once again with no resets and here I'm just gonna skip directly to Karen because the first three League members do not pose a threat for it the problem is is that Umbreon always makes things slightly inconsistent because it loves to use sand attack it does hit me in this fight I have guaranteed here that return is going to get the two hit against it so that's nice and from there I'm gonna one shot all of her Pokemon and because of her AI she is always going to send out vile plume last because it has no moves that are particularly good against Dragonite so all that's left is Lance and I don't even want to talk about the fight let's just talk about dragonite's move pool because it is so diverse this thing just has an answer for everything because of that the entire Johto section of the game is Trivial while I do have a Year's more experience I felt like Dragonite was actually easier to play in The Johto portion of the game than a Pokemon like Ho-Oh or Lugia and Kanto isn't much different because this whole portion of the game is very consistent as well I make it to Blue and here I have to mention my level rooting I want to be almost level 60 by the end of this fight then what I can do is just fight one or two wild Pokemon outside of Mount Silver and this will give me level 70 for red after all I've collected 10 rare Andes in my playthroughs but now I'll fess up to my mistake and you've probably already written about it in the comments so go and edit your comments and say hey we realize that you've recognized what your mistake was I really should have given dragonite's Thunderbolt instead of Ice Beam because Ice Beam is just not very useful against red but Thunderbolt is going to give me much easier two hits on the Blastoise so let's see how this goes so I'm gonna be able to one shot the Pikachu with return every single time meaning I always get to go up against the Blastoise now at level 70 with Thunderbolt and the magnet the blastways is always going to be a two hit however that's actually not a perfect solution for Dragonite because blizzard can still one hit it I have a chance to survive but it is not guaranteed so in the first fight it gets the unfavorable role for me and Dragonite faints alright let's try that again in this case I'll just mention the fact that if I get a critical hit I will one shot the Blastoise so that's nice he goes for blizzard again and once again it takes Dragonite out ah very frustrating but there is another way to bypass this fight other than just surviving the hit because Blastoise could miss blizzard which is what happens in the next fight so we make it to the Espeon I knock it out over two turns after all in this case you can see that I have guaranteed that my speed is 185 which is one more than espeon's 184. Snorlax is next I go for ice punch in case I freeze first turn and then I switch into return after that if I just consistently attack eventually I will knock this thing out once it goes down I use Thunderbolt on the Charizard to knock it out over two turns down on the Venusaur I heal because I know that ice punch isn't guaranteed to hit so I just want the health in case I get hit by a solar beam and for instance it crits so this secures the Victory and with that Dragonite clocks in in its second uh optimized playthrough which was really only one change with Thunderbolt it gets a time of 1 hour 24 minutes and 44 seconds this is a game time of 5 hours and 28 minutes it had two resets and it finished the game at the same level level 70. so let's rank it in my tier list because this is an outstanding performance it is a better time than Lugia and here I really need to make a disclaimer I am collecting results with a particular methodology and these results are ranked in the context of that methodology so if we change like one or two of the ways in which I do these runs I think these top Pokemon would Shuffle around and be in a different order I actually think that Lugia might be number one with Dragonite maintaining the second spot and Ho-Oh being third that's just because Ho-Oh was so effective just because it got hidden power ice whereas Lugia didn't gain as much of an advantage by having its hidden power set to a particular type because of dragonite's expansive move pool taking away the ability to set its hidden power type I don't think would impact its standings in these results so this thing definitely has legendary level performance now there is one more thing that I should say which is Dragonite ordinarily needs to evolve and if it had to start as a Dratini obviously it would not be ranked this High still today it's gonna get the second spot in my tier list so if Tyranitar has any hope of winning that is the standard that it needs to beat while I don't know if that's going to be possible I do think that I'm going to be able to give Tyranitar significantly better results like undoubtedly it is going to be the most improved Pokemon in today's video by using Sandstorm I can take a Bugsy consistently now here I'm going to do a major time Jump for Tyranitar because it really shuffled around the order of the mid game what I really wanted to do was make Chuck much more consistent so I go to the lighthouse and immediately after that I go to the lake of rage and finish off the rocket plot line with that out of the way I then take on price after all I don't really have to be worried about him with Tyranitar's typing and with that out of the way I head all the way to Chuck's gym and now I am level 36 for this fight with hidden power flying and the sharp beak I can one shot the primeape which is perfect I make it to the Poliwrath and here hidden power flying also gets a one hit so there is no chance for a reset and lost time there after that I have no resets on Jasmine or Claire and then when I make it to Will you will notice and hopefully you are proud of me I have not accidentally replaced hidden power flying so this time I am going to be able to use it against Bruno now before this fight this is after Koga by the way my Tyranitar is level 52 and this just barely isn't good enough I do need to use one rare candy to take it up to level 53 to improve its damage ranges with hidden power flying so that now it has a guaranteed one hit on the Machamp at level 52 it has an 80 chance to one hit the Machamp which I just don't think is good enough 20 chance for failure is not what I want to have happen here and once I'm at level 53 this fight is completely trivial there is no risk at all against Karen there is the regular risk of losing to sand attack it seems to exist with every Pokemon I really want to find a Pokemon that is just going to One Shot The Umbreon consistently that will be so satisfying but uh I don't know what Pokemon's gonna do that like something that learns a really powerful fighting move maybe Machamp I don't know anyways I make a pastor with no resets so that's a little bit of luck for Tyranitar and now it's time to face Lance as we saw before the hard Stone in combination with rock slide makes this fight very trivial so let's move on to Kanto now as I go into the blue fight which is actually quite easy for Tyranitar I just want to mention the fact that it is not going to go faster than Dragonite unfortunately and that's because throughout the playthrough I have had to train with it just a little bit more to ensure that I get the damage ranges that I need against a trainer like Bruno for instance and now let's face red so Tyrannosaur is going into this fight at level 71. I actually wanted it to be a little bit higher but I didn't want to grind for more levels so we're just gonna do it at this level and the unfortunate thing for Tyranitar is that no matter how I tried to go into this fight I just could not find a way through it with consistency like sometimes rockslide will just miss when you really don't want it to and because of that Venusaur will knock you out with solar beam which is what happens here that gives Tyranitar its first reset and then the Blastoise could create you which would take try around her out and if I make it by both of those Pokemon which is like normally what happens then the s espion gets a chance to set up mud slap and there is no way around this because leveling up Tyranitar to give it an additional 20 speed yeah it is not going to get anywhere near a competitive time if it has to do that plus I think it is capable of getting through this fight with decent consistency even when it gets hit by one or two mud slaps so that's the strategy that I went for today I heal up with rest on the Snorlax and then I knock it out and after that there is only the Charizard here you'll notice that I'm out of rock slide PP so here's a funny way that I can get by the lizard if I use rest Tyranitar goes to sleep and then I can use sleep talk and since sleep talk deducts his own PP even if rock slide is completely depleted it can occasionally choose this move So eventually Tyranitar does rock slide hits and Charizard goes down so in its second playthrough Tyranitar clocks in with a real time of 1 hour 28 minutes and 9 seconds this is a game time of 5 hours and 42 minutes it had one reset and it finished the game at level 71 so where does Tyranitar fit in in the tier list well it certainly has a time under an hour and 30 minutes and right now that is what I consider an S tier performance so yes Tyranitar is very good unfortunately it's slower than Ho-Oh Dragonite Lugia and Lapras so it earns the fifth slot in the tier list in summary what I really think it comes down to is Tyranitar's typing just doesn't stack up very well against red also its weaknesses to Chuck and Bruno force it to play a little bit more conservatively throughout the Johto portion of the game and also because of its type Effectiveness it had to choose hidden power flying which is really not that good for your DBS so today Dragonite of course is the Victor but Tyranitar of course is the most improved Pokemon I'm actually really happy with the amount of time that I was able to shave off its playthrough it also felt much more consistent both these Pokemon didn't need a lot of changes in their second playthrough because their first playthroughs went so well already and I would say that my largest disappointment coming out of this video was the fact that I just wasn't able to find a strap strategy against red that really satisfied me and that's because the Espeon just has mud slap and there's no way to avoid it like subscribe bring the time Echo and comment because I gotta read them all if you support me on patreon or through YouTube memberships thank you so much it means the world to me if you made it this far you're incredible I'll see you in tomorrow's video
