Drag race: Toyota HiLux GR Sport v Raptor v V6 Ranger v Wildtrak! Surprising results!

good day I'm Paul a couple of years ago Toyota announced that it was going to be releasing a hardcore Halo and an apex off-road variant this is that car it is the Toyota gr sport hux so we thought why not take Australia's bestselling car and stick it up against Australia's second bestselling car the Ford Ranger and guess what they also have a hardcore Halo and an apex off-road variant now I know you're thinking 15 grand price difference probably not that fair so what we thought we would do is do a drag race between this one the Raptor and then we'll go down the tree to the V6 and the 4 cylinder which are cheaper than this and see who's going to win in a straight line now before we get started if you're doing a skip ahead you can use the time codes that are on the screen or if you're we're going to kick off with the hux up against the rain rer Raptor the ranger raptor is significantly more expensive than this but it is Ford's hardcore Halo it's their off-road variant it is what this is to Toyota so we want to see how it goes then we're going to work our way through the ranger range to see if this actually competes with any of them now um we're going to run all of these in two wheel drive high range as well just so it's equal to the hux this can't be run in four-wheel drive high range on sealed surfaces whereas uh the ranger Raptor can but we're going to switch it over to two wheel drive high range just for the purpose of the drag here now just as a reminder 165 KW of power 550 newm of torque in the hux compared to around 300 KW of power in the ranger Raptor so I think I know how this is going to go but we'll see anyway I'm going to turn uh traction control off in this as well cuz it's sometimes bogs down a little bit off the line there James are you ready ready to be you yes okay uh Sean count us in okay we're setting up on go in three 2 1 go all right good start oh there he goes that is significantly quicker than this [Music] okay that's that did take quite some time um so unsurprisingly the uh Ranger Raptor one there it got off the line nice and quick and once it started moving it absolutely hammered even in two wheel drive high range it still hooked up and went uh which is good so all right that was kind of a bit of a known uh but it did get comprehensively spanked so time to line up with something that is a little bit closer to this in terms of price okay so next up is this thing so that is the Ranger sport it is a V6 so it's about $5,000 cheaper than this it has a turbocharged diesel V6 600 new M of torque so slightly more torque than this same story again we're going to slot that into two wheel drive high range and we're going to go for a run down to the end there and see what happens I think this will be close because uh based on previous testing I've done in that it's been a little bit laggy that V6 diesel so I'll be interested to see how it goes up against this I've left this with stability control and traction control off so we can get a good start and uh we'll see if we can catch J napping James are you ready ready okay here we go Sean count us in in three 2 oh got nice little start there all right oh I think I got him oh no here we go oh he's coming he's coming go go go go go go go come on oh she going to be close that was so close that was so close Sean uh or Eagle did we leave at the same time no you didn't I think James was about half a second behind oh okay let's go do that again because we crossed the Finish Line almost dead heat so we're going to do that run one more time uh James is going to have a Red Bull to wake up and then uh we'll see who the winner is okay it is time for take two here comes James he promises me he's actually awake this time all right are you ready James yes all right Sean count us in and on go in three 2 1 go go go go go [Music] go that's annoying bye I am full at to the board so that didn't go as well for me just then um he comprehensively bet me so all right uh V6 diesel uh Superior to 4-cylinder diesel not exactly shocking the world with that news um I have one more Contender for us to try so let's head back to the start and give that a crack okay so it is time for our final race and this is the one that I think is really going to be next con neck so that is the Ranger Wild track that again is also about 5 grand cheaper than this is but it's kind of the the Rival when it comes to engines because that's 500 newm this is 550 so it'll be really close in terms of how they compare uh so let's give this a crack and see exactly what happens all righty Sean count us in 3 2 1 go oh this is close oh this is close come on come on come on oh no I think he's got me go yes got him oh no nice that was so close that was so close unreal okay so we're going to do one more run just because it was so close at the end there that it could have really gone either way so we're going to give it one more crack and we'll see what happens okay so final run uh it's also worth pointing out at this point that the wild track is about 60 kilos heavier than this uh in terms of curb weight James is slightly lighter than I am so a little bit closer but um yeah that is ever so slightly heavier so let's give this one more shot James you ready ready all right Sean counter [Music] [Music] in go go [Applause] Fu come on oh that was so close so close but I won again so there you go the extra 50 new meters definitely helps despite that being slightly heavier uh that helps um yeah unfortunately I would have loved to actually get just like a an XLT or something just that's slightly lighter so that they are the same weight to really them but uh this is all we could get our hands on unfortunately but um yeah look I guess it does show you that you know their Halo model uh is only really as good as one of the entrylevel diesel engines uh it's not as good as the V6 or or the Raptor by any stretch so yeah look I think that um hopefully Toyota is brewing something interesting in the background because um yeah this has a significant amount of work that needs to be done to it for it to actually compete with the V6 Diesel and the Raptor certainly at the price points as well like this being so expensive it just doesn't have anything on them in terms of straight line performance so hopefully Toyota can do something about that to actually give us the oomph that we need these are the actual performance figures that we got when we stuck them up against our GPS data unit as well so you can get an idea of how quick they are across the quarter mile so yeah good times right so there you go uh barely surprising High luux slower than Raptor and V6 diesel I think what that tells us is this desperately needs a bigger engine if they want it to be this hardcore Halo especially if they want it to compete with the Rangers so hopefully Toyota if you are listening to this get a petrol V6 whack it under the Bonnet of this and we should be good to go uh
