Dr. Scott Hahn Responds to Dr. Martin's "Spiritual Warfare"

let me say a word in defense of Reason in dialogue with faith because faith is that proof Faith unites us to that substance a reason in order to realize its full potential needs the horizons revealed by and truths contained in the faith and not just any faith but the Catholic faith I remember coming into the church back in 1986 and teaching Christian morality in 1987 I was a freshman Professor Tim gray was one of my freshman students of the time others too and I remember assigning Ralph's book crisis of Truth and a few weeks into the semester Tim came to me and said did you read this I said yeah he said it's scary I'm like yeah it is he goes but it's a exciting like it sure is I mean we wonder why we were stuck in these times 50 years from now those of us who are still alive well maybe 30 years from now people are going to ask us what was it like to be alive back then in the period of Blessed John Paul and Pope Benedict in the era of the new evangelization at the height of the spiritual battle what was it like and we'll have scars for sure we can talk about it maybe in five or 10 years God knows the timetable but we are blessed to be alive right now and we are blessed to be here right now but as Ralph reminded us we are not here primarily just to grow in our understanding to fill our head with the truths we are here to be empowered in our wills and in our hearts to go forth and fight the good fight and to do it in a way that is truly humble that is also filled with gratitude you know I I was struck by so many things that he said most Catholics aren't in the battle because most Catholics don't know there is a battle do you really believe that I do too and why because they're in prison they're they're PS that's just really enlightening you know what a revelation he be by talking about how you know Paul pulls the veil you know but what a wakeup call but it's also a relief because you can look at our fellow Catholics and realize that yes they're not without culpability and yet at the same time they really are victims of war they're prisoners and Christ has come to set the captives free beginning with us because we are captive to so many things so many sins so many habits so many lies that we have told ourselves but to realize that Christ wants to set us free much more than we want him to that's exactly what we're about to celebrate as we prepare ourselves to enter into the holy mystery of the mass I also liked it when he said that uh the problem in America is not just that well this is me paraphrasing and applying it but the problem in America is not just that Catholics are being forced to violate their conscience you know by having to cover and pay for abor ofation contraception that sort of thing the problem in America is that Americans are rejecting the Divine Law of love not just by covering abortion and contraception but by practicing it it isn't just the protection of our conscience that we want it's the conversion of our country and of all Nations as well unbelief as the basic sin oh man the implications of that you know we say it is right to give him thanks and praise it is right and just which implies that it's wrong not to that it's an injustice not to Express gratitude to God not that our culture fights that sort of problem ah we have got to really enter into spiritual warfare we've got to put on the armor of God we've got to confess that we are not capable of doing this but that Christ is and that for whatever reason Christ has chosen us he's brought us he's taught us and now he wants to fill us and I want to thank Jesus for his servants this morning for Kimberly and the practical wisdom that she shared and for Ralph Martin the dynamic challenge that he gave us thank you very [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] much
