Dr. John left us today in a heart attack at the age of 77. Thankfully he has left us with a rich legacy that give credit to his immense talent and warmth. Rest in peace Mac!

40 years ago as a young DJ at an FM rock station in Denver, I had the cosmic treat of doing an interview live on the air with Dr. John. We ended up talking for about an hour: I'd pull records he referred to or wanted to hear, play them and he'd talk about the song, etc. Or whatever; he was totally fascinating and generous and knew sooo much about music. It was that kind of a loosely format FM radio station -- called "free-form radio" at the time.
I've never forgotten that experience. At the end of the hour, wrapping up, I thanked him for doing "Dr. J. the DJ" for everyone, and he just laughed, real slow and low like rolling, warm molasses, and said, "All right...all right .... all right."
Effortless playing and such a distinctive voice. Definitely one of a kind. RIP

That's a shame. He was so amazing in The Last Waltz. Just came out nowhere, and blew it away.
