[Music] sup everybody i figured it'd have to sound pretty much like what you're already watching to get your attention you may be in self-isolation you may be at work six feet from everyone else or you may be just out there thinking yourself i got 60 bucks burning a hole in my pocket and there's no hand moisturizer to buy what should i get well that's why it's time to review doom eternal baby what happens when you take the redshift speed sprint and moments of doom 2016 mix in a ton of platform and then say hey you know what let's take the fortress of solitude and duma fight well it's time to find out this review has been approved by torrey black i love carrick if you like the review hey maybe subscribe that's totally for sure tori black thanks tori doomer turtle is out march 20th for the xbox ps4 stadium not in rio 4k and for the switch later on for 59.99 let's see how it did so here's my review for doom eternal doom slayer odin son demon served up well done and put in all the run in run and gun graphics are up first i think we can all remember doom 2016 was no slouch it threw murderous mobs of multilin monsters at you with the quickness and other than a few small issues that ran like a damned fever dream and it'd be a tacit betrayal to assume that doom eternal wouldn't hold up the lofty still burning head of some demon as a torch and yell i can do better and in many ways it does sure death parkour is still here and that's where it's at and you as the doom slayer firmly encapsulated in a world war ii tank where the armor and weapons and ice skates slides around the game world and that's the glue that holds it all together almost right from the start you're bristling with weapons and lasers shotguns cannons flamethrowers ice grenades and each more offering up their own unique visual footprint as you paint the insides of the dungeons hallways and old buildings with the colorful parts of whatever the demons digested before he showed up and pulled their insides outside what's easy to pick up right from the start is that doom eternal looks its best when you are at full speed flitting around the world sliding past enemies blood fisting them into a meaty mess and then jumping off a bounce pad into the air to drop heavy rain onto the heads of a bunch of monsters that probably go home every night and if they talk about anything they probably talk about you and it's that design the weapon effects the maps the world effects and all of them they're stellar and that garish super saturated color that makes its hormone eternal like some kind of visual brain worm continues to reflect throughout the entire title if you're trying to figure out where the world's filled with a bunch of recess playground parallel bars like board olympians and self-isolation built them all up you are vastly overthinking the doom games and sure it's probable maybe even possible that the demons when you aren't there are practicing their tap swings and are just too embarrassed to show you but you utilize them all the time so that's all that matters where doom does stumble on its big size 13 trooper boots is in the same place as the original did on occasion the level design can feel truncated and closed off in some moments more so here now than even in the 2016 title tight corridors and twisting battle arenas can cause the game's slippery motion and that delight of deal and death from a thousand different directions a little bit hard when you're bouncing off monsters in a hallway like bullies beating up the school nerd if they already weren't shooting you and trying to eat you and casting magical spells this would be borderline assault as they close up in on you and start rubbing up against you in a corner and try as you might getting out from the center of a group can be a bit like praying to steve adler your chance of success is pretty freaking low now don't get me wrong that flicky quick movement that lets you consistently feel like you're channeling every 1980s michael bay movie through your hand cannons is there for the most part it's just that in some locations it can be a frustrating gamble a fool's gambit if you will of sprinting through a section in the hopes an enemy won't be on the other side and then just stuck firmly in place as you try to take them out with a blood fist and hope it opens up some room moving on from there i have to say i do enjoy the enemy designs old and new the best is probably this fatty slobbingly shaped spider dude that climbs around the game world launches shields in front of the enemies so you can't hit him or in the air to block one of your jumps and just when you think screw it i'll just get close and shoot him he also has an energy cannon that can do some significant damage up close if you ignore it another place where the game has a couple rocky starts are the low detail textures that you will notice in a lot of different areas now these were in many places in the game it actually looked a little bit like it wasn't loading up i did have a couple places where it actually wasn't fully loading textures and i could see through the level but that usually went away with a level reload and this is prior to the release and speaking of sweet sweet release let's talk about performance my time was spent with the pc version when they first originally said here are the requirements settings i looked at them and i thought you know it's nice to be positive about things that's why you call masturbation and orgy with some scheduled absences but it's actually rarely true luckily enough today is going to be one of those days with a last gen i7 and a 1080 you can easily get 1080p if not 1440p and well above 60fps with the settings at the highest or very high with a 2080 ti and a current i7 or i5 you'll be able to do the same but at 4k it runs spectacularly well there were a couple drops in the later parts of the levels but nothing that got me anywhere near below 60 fps one caveat to this we were running day one nvidia drivers for this game that aren't available publicly they should be available when the game goes live when you look at a game like this there are some low detail textures there are some issues here and there with maybe some destructibility of the environments which i would like far more of but what you're looking at is a game that's speedy speed all the way through it's fun to play it's exciting and when it comes down to it a lot of times you're not gonna be pausing and looking at that rock and seeing that low detail texture because you're gonna be dead and that brings us to sound [Music] the gathering of hell priests is located just above your location my scans indicate there is a lift at the center of this facility and we're gonna do music first mcgordon returns to eternal and with proper form now i know there's some people who didn't like the doom 2016 soundtrack and that's fine there's a special place in hell for them the same one that people who talk to in the movies go to but here in eternal you can get prime mic gordon a choppy loop-driven affair that even in the slow times is still somehow faster tempo than a lot of other games if you listen to this soundtrack in other titles it'd be their boss fights but here it's like the main menu music everything about it rages reflecting the game state as it speeds up and slows down and spreads out as different stingers abound and small notes play out as enemies are added into the fray the best part though is there are a few times when eternal is at its slowest and the music plays out with what sounds like the world's most depressed chorus of voices crying out in pain leave it to mick to somehow find a game and make a soundtrack dark enough that death metal singers would probably listen to it and go yeah i'm going to go for a walk outside it's amazing stuff it has a good elasticity to it between the battle and the platforming and the exploration and that all melds into one cohesive musical experience and that brings us to voice unfortunately due to the embargo i can't play a great deal of this to you i will say that it's fine epically out of place and endlessly gritty and violent if you're not being told that you're the cause of some huge problem in the game it's telling you that you're the only one who can fix the huge problem in the game that's the doomsayer's eternal conan drum combat mixed with the casualty of his leftover possible humanity and the need to jump back into combat at a moment's notice while not up to the lofty ideals of the music and the sound the voice isn't bad at all and that does bring us to sound this is great and the few issues i had with doom 2016 are completely gone here and there's a couple reasons why focusing on the weapons themselves they have this awesome thick sample sound to them there's multiple parts moving and shaking as you unleash double-barreled day enders into some demon decided to check if you're around a corner and surprise you are processing for sound dynamics and surround as well as alerting the game player to an enemy's locations are done pretty well and went not surrounded by nine demons trying to test to see if matter can occupy the same space it absolutely helps the gamer place them on the map verticality isn't exactly the best but overall still works some stuff though is rough here like when rocks or statues break many times it's just sort of a raw sample like cracking rock almost untouched without any kind of effects it's a little hilarious when you have this hundred foot statue crumble down and it sounds like a kid throwing a rock into well another bag of rocks that's it though it's a little bit odd sometimes but overall it's excellent and speaking of excellent let's get to gameplay and a bit about the story let me set the stage this is many months after doom 2016 a huge swath of the earth has been conquered by the demonic invasion and suddenly he's returned and instantly sets off on an epic quest to slay the hell priests and stop the invasion before all mankind's extinguished and well that's about that and unlike doom 2016 doom eternal has you using a fortress of doom as a main base and it's as epic as it sounds with you using it to teleport to various locations to beat the crap out of anything that moves so you can find the main boss in that location beat the crap out of him until he stops moving i know that for many that constant running in 2016 felt a little bit odd but this is a game that uses orthogonal unit differentiation and it really needs that with the different units tactics and speed and advantages against the player all resulting in different challenges and requires you to consistently move as the faster enemies will catch up quickly and also happen to do the most damage however with a double sprint mechanic allowing you to jet around the game world connected to a larger more mobile swing mechanic with you leaping from various location specific areas eternal lets you sort of vault around or clamber onto walls to get that one step up on the enemy the game's sense of verticality is easily any past doom game has really felt like some areas requiring you to sprint into a location identify where enemies are and sprint out leaping onto a platform to bound onto the second level so you can then sprint through drop through a hole and hope that at least some of those enemies are still there they will have you sprinting and tearing leaping across large areas spinning the fire only to realize yep they're right behind you that's the best part of doom eternal and that magical difference it's something that sets it aside from a lot of single-player shooters the reliance on the player to keep moving at full breakneck pace to keep pushing forward or retreat or flank but by all means just keep doing something because it can take less than a couple seconds for the entire floor's worth of enemies to be on you let's talk about glory kills for a second because that is what a lot of people think they'll be doing to get those enemies off of you or they get out of jail free card like a lot of people worried about i will say this for some of the game they can be that way but the game is balanced enough and the enemy's difficulty highlighted enough that on the higher degrees of difficulty it becomes one of an assortment of skills that you'll need to use but not the only one i have no illusions that they can be overused especially as people play level after level after level over and over and over again and sort of pace everything out but for regular play those were useful but didn't always save me in the midst of battle but of course you're not without your own tools of the trade the game wouldn't be called doom it'd just be called run otherwise you have shotguns and missile launchers lasers flamethrowers grenade launchers particle cannons and more each gun can be upgraded with weapons points you collect by encountering enemies and exploring levels letting you pick from two trees for each weapon for instance the laser gun may have a massive buildup shockwave it can do with a tree that augments that until it's like a mini atomic bomb or you can go the other route and pick the ability to lock onto an enemy put them in their place and eat away their hit points at the cost of a bit of your own mobility however to unlock the last skill from any of the two trees per weapon you are required to fulfill what's called a master challenge this can be something like killing 25 enemies with that weapon or things even far more difficult you can skip these if you find mastery coins in some levels but they aren't easy to find i think i got four through my game through now once you're back at home base you can walk around the fortress of doom think of floating death cathedral replete with the celestial stone tower expansions and you pretty much have the point areas and items are unlocked as you progress including various skins for the doom slayer themselves based on past games and other events here too you can choose to go into any mission as well and turn on cheat codes you find throughout the game aside from a couple secrets that's really sort of all there is which was a bit disappointing i honestly was hoping for a bit more here sure you can go into the basement and beat the [ __ ] out of a bunch of demons that you have already sort of kicked the crap out of anyway but that's like beating up a bunch of people you kidnapped you've already won what the hell are you doing upgrading the castle is one thing but what about upgrading the doom slayer himself other than the weapons well you can do that you can actually upgrade the suit these add abilities to the grenade launcher that you have installed on the suit changes damage from world environments adjust mobility and ability time frames by speeding them up and so on it makes level exploration a bit easier and exploration is a huge part of doom and morse so do maternal than the past games the creators have made sure exploration is not only rewarded handedly but it's sort of a kind of thing that's organic and you can instinctually feel when there might be something nearby now you can also get runes that are applied to you and take up a number of slots on your armor these are more passives with adjustments and buffs to what you already have lastly you have sentinel crystal each crystal has a main skill that activates when you buy the two upgrades prior to it and those upgrades affect either ammo health or shield those are split between six different crystals by two and boom that becomes active something like say the demon staying on fire for longer or heal pickups powering up your blood punch if you're already full health it's nice to see the developers try something new and not get tied down into the tyranny of habit there's enough here to make you feel like it's a little bit unique while at the same time certainly feel like doom prior however doom eternal does skip a heartbeat here or there some locations it does feel padded out where jumps or platforming just feels more gamified than i would have liked nevertheless there aren't a ton however you'll probably notice them this also might be tied to another issue i had with the game which is its choice of enemy group makeups and variety let me explain with doom you have a number of difficulties and as you guys know i test on all of them you have too young to die hurt me plenty ultra violence nightmare ultra nightmare and extra life mode now alter nightmare is nightmare mode but you have one death and if you die game's over you can save after each mission though with extra life mode it's like old coin ops where you find an extra life in the game levels but if you run out you die now when you jump into the game the big changes on those difficulties are really how death is treated in the enemy's health and damage bonuses the issue here is that some of the enemies don't work exactly well in the places they spawn and you can clear enemies with that blood punch or the chainsaw or the rocket launcher but the blood punch has to be powered up as you level the chainsaw can run out of gas and there's splash damage which means firing a rocket at your feet is a pretty risky proposition you may be thinking to yourself then just keep moving again that works great but with some of the levels one huge square two interconnected squares the two interconnected squares on top of another square with giant holes punched out of them becomes harder when enemies spawn in everywhere including right behind you this has always been an issue with these types of games but that needs to be mitigated with excellent level design synergistically with skills and abilities combined with enemy spawn locations eternal usually checks all those boxes make no mistake but not always and you can often feel when it doesn't or you can jump into the multiplayer mode if you want this is two demons one slayer baby which sounds hot you can leap in and do party battles or online with two players being demons who can summon other demons and block the slayer from getting the power-ups as well as take him out mono-amano the slayer themselves has a goal to kill both demons within a particular time frame or one of them resurrects before we move on though let's talk about what's really important length doom eternal took me about 18 to 19 hours to see the end with a mix of playing on various difficulties for testing as well as performance analytics and exploration but sometimes length is not all that matters sometimes it's girth let's talk about fun factor despite the occasional issues with pacing doom eternal is exactly what i think a lot of people hoped it's insanely speedy killathons that the prior game had with platforming and unique movement up to a higher degree it's a different feel from 2016. don't get me wrong and it can feel a bit weird to have these big platforming spots in the middle of the battle in the story small issues aside it's an absolute enjoyment to enter a location see the enemies spawn in and have 10 minutes of absolute balls to the walls gaming where by the time you're done the highlights are going to be enmeshed in your memories like special birthday parties and first sexual experiences while the down times are relegated to you know what those weren't half bad sections of your memory as well if there's one thing i would have loved from eternal would have been better bosses though some were good but a couple were pretty ho-hum i will update the review if monetizations end up popping up but so far bethesda has stated they will not be in this game so as you guys know i rate games on a buy weight for sale rent or never touched again rating system with rent being replaced by deep deep sale on pc titles to me this is absolutely worth getting but there is some caveats here it is a slightly different feeling game than doom 2016. there were times that i got frustrated for sure and when you put this difficulty up on the higher difficulties it is absolutely crazy and you have the multiplayer events coming later you have invasion on all of these different things there's actually a lot being offered in doom eternal so that's it for me i want to say thanks to everybody also keep yourself safe people this is a weird time to live in this world but i hope each and every one of you out there feels my little gamer fist bump i'm giving you right now you know what there's a lot of negativity that goes on but i see people pulling together this is something it's sad to see this happen and these kind of situations occur but it's awesome to see gamers pull together start jumping in the discord and start playing games together and talking it's again sad that this is what's brought it about but i have to say i'm really proud of a lot of people that i've talked to in the last couple days when all the shit's hit in the fan you guys absolutely rock if you want to follow me you can do so on twitter and facebook and reddit of course i would love for you to follow me in those places itunes and spotify is where everything goes up in audio form including the podcasts the news as well as spoiler free reviews spoiler free because there's no damn video and lastly you can become a patron i can't stress it enough guys i posted pictures a couple days ago in the last video just demonetized out the wazoo and so if you're in patreon it does help there's just nothing to say about it this world is weird when it comes to youtube when you guys are in patreon you absolutely help me continue to give you guys reviews that aren't two minutes long or filled with sponsored bull crap and you guys know i buy a copy of every game i get even if the dev gives me a code patron allows me to do those side videos report on news and do all this crazy stuff for you i hope to see you all the way through 2020 peace out and enjoy the rest of your week
