[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] today on well built home Stefan's going to show us some of the most common types of wood products you'll find in a kitchen let's briefly touch on four of the more common types of wood products you'll see in an average kitchen first we're going to look at the hard and soft wood products then we'll take a look at a product called MDF or medium density fiberboard then we'll take a look at particle board and lastly we'll take a look at plywood even as a professional it can often be difficult to lock into a kitchen look around and know what types of products were used because so often as you can see they're all painted but why don't we take a look at the materials and then I'll show you a few tips and tricks that you can use to determine what types of products were used in the kitchen this is hardwood comes in many different varieties and it's most commonly used on the door & drawer facings as well as other prominent cabinet trims it's the most expensive so you won't see it used in the lower end kitchens but it is the most durable and it can be refinished one of the ways to determine whether or not it's hardwood is if it's real wood you'll see the rings of the tree in the end grains like this this is MDF MDF is a less expensive product product it's a little bit heavy but it can be either painted or it can be vinyl wrapped or wrapped with a wood grain so as you see here it can look like real wood problem with MDF is that it's phone to moisture damage if it gets chipped the way you can tell it's MDF is because it's made up of a very very finely ground sawdust which is bonded together with a glue this is particle board it's similar to NDF in that it's made up of ground-up wood but the wood pieces seems a little to be a little bit bigger it's also wrapped in vinyl in this application and we use it in a lot of our kitchens for cabinet shelving and boxes but I personally wouldn't want to see this a cabinet facing it can be wrapped in what veneers to give it that would look but it won't stand up to heavy use this is plywood it's more expensive higher-end option than either the particle board or the MDF but not quite as expensive as the Hargett pie wood is often used for shelves and cabinet boxes in higher end homes because it's light and durable the thing I personally love about plywood is just how exciting it is I mean whose face doesn't light up when you talk about pilot I could Andrea yeah there's gonna be a test on this Hey oh yeah no I've got this I'm a housing professional oh yeah you tell me plywood because I can see all the layers particle board because I can see all the compact particles hardwood because I can see all the tree rings MDF because I can see all the small and compact fibers nailed it what a great student materials are an easy place for a builder to cut a few corners will hold their client really knowing and it makes a big difference to the longevity of your kitchen if good materials where use their kitchen will last a long time and if you're paying a lot you want your kitchen to last a long time and if you can't tell by looking at the kitchen then start asking ask your Realtor yeah you can ask your Realtor to check out who the Builder was check out who made the cabinets and even check the cabinet maker out online or give them a call and see what materials they used if the materials were all painted and you can't quite tell this is a particle board and this is maple particle board is fine if that's what you're paying for but if you're paying for maple you want to make sure you're getting maple because you only get what you pay for it you get what to look for [Music]
