around these new macbook pros as well as the m1 chips and their anticipated performance let's um let's check it out i have not been this excited for a computer since i got my first unibody macbook and okay okay okay i don't know how to start this video oh my god 64 gigs like get out of here dude we're both here i have been waiting for a macbook like this pretty much my entire life and it all felt like hype mania until my man dave 2d came out with some sense and decency around the subject with this for most people that want this but don't actually have like a like a clear and present need for it you don't need it these are just too expensive to pick up as like a fun purchase they're really cool but they're tools that's all they are they're just tools and that's the approach i want to take with my review and as stella gets the benchmarks that we forgot to do yesterday you pompous nerf herder we are going to jump into the build quality and usability of the new macbook pro 16s whether you're considering picking up the m1 pro or the m1 max they're going to have the same build and you'll be seeing these benchmarks later in the video for both of the m1 models the new hard edges along the top cover resemble the latest iphone 13. it's a subtle change that allows the new models to stand out from the prior 16-inch intel variants so you can be sure that people will know that you have the latest m1 that is not the reason you should be buying them these are not status symbols as dave2d just said one of my favorite lines out of all the reviewers so far they're just tools and that's what we have to keep in mind when considering these laptops the bottom cover looks very similar to the previous intel generation it fits nicely into the side panels the assembly on the laptop is flawless and pristine which is to be expected from the brand obsessed with build quality and premium aesthetic the new feet are such a simple change but so needed i have a 2015 macbook pro here that was refurbed last summer and the feet are already cracking and falling off so i really hope that these new feet have a much longer resilience than these feet that are just over a year old on the 2015 macbook pro which was refurbished very recently for the first time in a number of years apple is finally laying down the form follows function mentality with these new pro models and it's seen with the heavier chassis and the port reset for the first time in apple history they have retracted their no ports agenda and brought back three ports they recently discarded for the past four years the hdmi port is not really about future proofing this machine which is why i think skipping hdmi 2.1 is not that big of a deal this port is more for the moments when you left your dongle on your desk and you're in a meeting and it's about to start in 15 seconds and you have to hook up your computer to hdmi absolutely asap the sd card slot however is a massive win because the speeds are very fast on this port 23 gigs of b raw footage transferred onto a 300 megabytes per second sd cards from my standard editing computer to the sd card and it took 36 minutes the transfer speed from the macbook pro was one minute and 24 seconds which translates to 3.6 seconds per gig transfer speed while bringing back the magsafe port they also beefed up the charger block inside of the box supplying us with a 140 watt charger you can quickly charge the laptop from zero to 100 in just one hour and 41 minutes while in sleep mode pretty crazy being that the battery life on this laptop is equally as incredible so you go dead you stop by a starbucks you can charge it to 50 in like 30 minutes charge it to full in an hour and 41 minutes and you can be back on the road with like up to 18 hours of battery life no bs incredible battery life results now apple wasn't fluffing it up this year for their stats which actually kind of surprised me so the 100 watt hour battery provides 20 hours and 17 minutes of productivity 18 hours and 23 minutes of streaming video 10 hours and 34 minutes of photoshop and 9 hours and 3 minutes of premiere pro playback 4k but per apple style you don't compromise performance to get these type of results you will see later in the video that this computer matches the current power of the top gaming laptop and workstations on the market in video editing the adobe creative suite as well as simulated benchmarks can you say that again please why yes of course what i said was these match the top gaming laptops and workstations available on the market so when it comes to the price tag on these laptops you're not buying better performance but far greater efficiency for instance whether i'm on the sofa at the lunch table in my office or taking a i get all the performance and incredible battery life all battery life tests were run at half screen brightness the screen set to pro motion and the preset on apple xdr display for the photoshop results we ran the puget systems photoshop benchmark on repeat until the battery went dead a very intense photoshop workflow regarding video editing we ran a 4k project with motion graphics on loop until the battery went dead speaking of the pro motion setting basically that automatically adjusts the frame rates of the screen the hertz and refresh rate to optimize for battery life gaming at 120 hertz or whatever else you might be doing that requires a different screen refresh rate the screen is bright crystal clear and color accurate i spent a lot of time in premiere pro so that taller 16 by 10 aspect ratio is really nice fitting my production monitor timeline and effects with ease stella i can see you've been working on my email signature here but i must say are you trying to ruin my reputation here do range on the new macbook pros is really good it's surprisingly not perfect what i mean by that is not 100 across the board but it is really good now you also have quick access to the brightness and screen color profiles to easily toggle through the different presets these change the brightness resolution and color temperature of the screen continuing on to different features of the screen let's cover the notch which is housing apple's latest 1080p webcam and noise cancelling mic the future of your zoom meetings is bound for much higher quality and here's a quick sample of me using the webcam so you can check it out here is a test of the webcam at the 1080p webcam checking out the audio as well to see if you like the webcam see if it fits for your needs it's definitely better than the crappy 720p webcams we've had forever so i'm super stoked that apple made this move for the 1080p and regarding the audio coming out of the slightly improved speakers here's a quick sample of it for you [Music] i think we can all give a hearty hallelujah to the absence of a touch bar on this laptop what a piece of junk that thing did no one any good and if you say you like it i just question i just question how honest you're being with yourself because it's so much easier to use hardware function buttons than it is that silly touch bar which gave you slightly more functionality and customization on your keyboard deck now there is a fingerprint reader that has remained the touch bar went away but the fingerprint reader remains but there is no like open face id so you don't like open your laptop immediately unlocks for you hopefully that will come in a future iteration but right now the webcam does not offer that face detection that unlocks your computer for you before giving you a quick audio sample of the keyboard and trackpad in use we do have this massive apple track pad no revisions here it's the same one great touch gestures great click sensitivity in case you're new to the apple ecosystem it's not a mechanical trackpad it actually just simulates the click by making specific vibrations which is actually pretty deceiving it feels like a real click which i think is incredible so here's a quick sample of the trackpad and keyboard not only are these laptops extremely energy efficient but they're also cool and quiet and i'm going to get into the benchmarks in just a minute to show you how cool and how quiet they actually are but first i want you to see the performance benchmarks so that way the cool and quiet benchmarks will be that much more impressive now before you say okay ben you've basically just celebrated this laptop the whole time the reason is is this laptop is an incredible piece of machinery it is very well put together it is extremely well optimized but we're going to get into the performance benchmarks to see if it's really worth the cost strictly based on the performance and that's where we can really start to split hairs and work through what a buying decision might look like for you for a quick recap we have the base model of the m1 pro and the m1 max and kicking things off in cinebench r23 this laptop lands in kind of the middle of the field compared to a lot of gaming benchmarks available on the market some of these laptops coming in at the same price point are actually below the macbook pro models that i have in front of me right now as we transition to the geekbench single core and multi-core however we see the m1 pro and the m1 max go above the latest m1 chip from apple inside of the macbook pro 13. and then as we transition into geekbench multi-core it blows away everything including the previous m1 chip but life is not about simulated benchmarks as i've said on my channel before so let's go ahead and shift into photoshop and as we're in photoshop you can see that these laptops handle photoshop extremely well they don't blow the charts away but they hit kind of the middle of the charts and let me talk through this real quick they seem to kind of thermal throttle themselves so that way the fans don't kick on and the laptops don't heat up which i think is a good thing as far as the user experience and the enjoyment of using the laptop and as you can see coming up on the screen right now it didn't get above 41 degrees celsius and it did not kick on the fans at all but we're hitting it around that 709 for the macbook pro m1 pro and for the m1 max around the 800 point range now moving on to after effects this is where i was actually really surprised these models trash anything else i've reviewed on my channel before and these are for the standard after effects benchmark now one thing that really amazed me was the ability for them to stay cool quiet and obtain these levels of performance we saw zero decibels of fan noise during the entire after effects benchmark and we saw very low thermal temperatures as well however when we switched over to the rendering it didn't seem like they performed as well as i had hoped i wasn't able to test these on 3d modeling or the official after effects render benchmark so know that these results came from correlating the render times from the standard after effects benchmark on these two models compared to a asus zephyrus g15 with the rtx 3080 okay so what i did is i compared the two times and then was able to correlate a general score was about a 613 for the m1 pro and about a 691 for the max okay and the reason that this is is this is really in line i did a lot of research on this this is really in line with a lot of the gaming benchmarks that take a lot of heavy rendering and what we're seeing is about a 25 to 35 decrease in performance compared to the latest rtx 3080 gpu now the game kind of changes as we get into video editing because inside of premiere pro you're not only working with a lot of optimizations in the gpu but you're also working with optimization in the ram as well as the cpu now one thing i've learned while testing a lot of different laptops in premiere pro is that premiere pro really likes ram and the fact that these have unified ram makes them optimized more for playback in premiere pro and that's why we're seeing such great results here in premiere pro playback so as you see up on the screen right now here's each of the different file types and resolution sizes coming from which camera and how many drop frames they had out of the 16 177 in the project in total now one thing i also noted was the 6k b raw playback and how hot the m1 chip got as well as how loud it was and the amount of rpms that were produced from the fans so at about three minutes into the playback we saw about 59 degrees celsius on the chip 27 decibels from the fans and about 1600 rpms at six minutes we saw 63 degrees celsius 36 decibels and about 2700 rpms and then as it got up to about nine minutes it was able to stabilize and cool the cpu a little bit so we ended up at about 59 degrees celsius 40 decibels of fan noise and 3 100 rpms so these do produce quite a bit of fan noise but this is not even close to how much fan noise let's say an rtx 3080 would have produced for these same results if not not even as good of results we're going to see anywhere from 50 to 55 decibels of fan noise out of an asus zephyrus g15 to get these same playback results with b raw nine drop frames editing b raw with the m1 max and 1860 drop frames out of the pro editing b-raw and premiere pro now the export times for both of these laptops were good nothing earth shattering but again what set these laptops apart is how cool quiet and amazing battery life that they were able to accomplish while exporting these clips you're gonna see the file type in camera decibels time to export rpms and thermals now what's crazy about all of this is you can walk around the house for nine hours editing and exporting footage before the battery goes dead it's just that's what makes this laptop incredible it's not necessarily oh my word these are performing better than anything we've ever seen but they're performing very well on par with what we've seen and much more efficiently now next we're going to move into davinci resolve davinci resolve saw good results we always have smooth playback and resolve with a lot of the top gaming laptops that's the same here with these new m1 chips and then of course you're now going to see the export times coming up on the screen as well for davinci resolve i'm not a huge benchmarker of davinci resolve but i do run the core test so that way you guys can see how well these laptops will handle resolve if you're somebody considering this laptop because you want great performance alone i would steer you away from this laptop because you can get the same performance out of say an asus zephyrus g15 with an rtx 3080 for around 2200 and that would cost you about 35 plus hundred dollars actually total with taxes around 3 700 for the m1 max so you could save over a thousand dollars by going with an ace of cephas g15 if performance is your only concern however if you're somebody who wants great battery life and full performance when you're not plugged into the charger you want to have cool and quiet thermals you want to have a killer screen incredible audio and speaker experience a fast laptop quiet laptop great keyboard a huge trackpad i mean there's so many benefits to picking a macbook pro m1 max or m1 pro but the real question is do you need that much efficiency do you have to spend that much money to do your tasks for me on my day to day i would love to have one of these i think it'd be really neat to go to walk around my house and edit videos however 90 of the time i'm standing at my desk with my full desktop pc running fine
